FAYETTE COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A T-38 Talon II aircraft from Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi crashed near Fayette County, Alabama on Tuesday, May 12.

According to the 14th Flying Training Wing of the U.S. Air Force, the plane was involved in a mishap around noon on Tuesday.

The crash site is in Lamar County off Raspberry Road, very close to the Fayette County line.

Two pilots from Columbus Air Force Base ejected from the aircraft safely. The cause of the mishap is unknown at this time and will be investigated by the Safety Investigation Board, according to the U.S. Air Force.

First responders evacuated the pilots to a hospital in Mississippi for treatment.

Officials with Columbus Air Force Base say both pilots were released from the hospital Tuesday evening, May 12, and are at home safe.

Personnel from the military remain at the scene working with local and state agencies. We’re told their operations are focused on safety, securing aircraft debris, and supporting ongoing safety investigations.
