ATLANTA (WLOX) — Attorney Ben Crump and the Rev. Al Sharpton will join the parents of Nolan Wells at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Atlanta Thursday morning.

The group is scheduled to attend a press conference calling for the Department of Justice to open an independent federal review into Wells’ disappearance and death.

The Congressional Black Caucus is also calling for a closer look at the case. In a letter sent Wednesday, Chair Yvette D. Clarke and members of the caucus urged U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel to launch an independent review of the case.

Crump, who represents the Wells family, has also repeatedly called for a thorough and transparent investigation into Wells’ death. Crump’s team is also conducting its own investigation.

Wells was reported missing after he did not return from a July 4 boating trip with friends. His body was found in the water just off Horn Island on the morning of July 6.

An independent autopsy commissioned by the family classified both the cause and manner of death as undetermined. The office of District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath said the state autopsy report will be withheld until a grand jury can review it.
