MDOT planning major project on I-20 in Jackson

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – MDOT will be announcing a major project on Tuesday that is expected to impact Central Mississippi in the near future.

While no details were given about the project announcement scheduled for Tuesday, MDOT previously published a project on their website’s project list that will include multiple bridges on I-20 in Jackson that is expected to last years.

That project will stretch from Wiggins Road to The Stack and is expected to require multiple weeks-long closures of Interstate 20 to allow crews to safely complete bridge work. During those closures, traffic will have to be diverted around Jackson using Interstate 220 and Interstate 55, much like previous closures in 2019.

Motorists should also expect increased traffic on U.S. Highway 80 as drivers seek alternate routes through the city during the interstate closures.

Interstate 20 is one of Mississippi’s busiest freight and commuter corridors, with the section attached to this project seeing over 90,000 vehicles per day.

The bridge improvements are intended to extend the life of the interstate and improve long-term reliability for motorists and commercial traffic.

MDOT is expected to release additional details on construction phasing, specific dates, closure details and traffic control plans before work begins. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time during the multi-year project.
