JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Shoppers at a Fondren grocery store say they are upset after an elderly woman was robbed inside the store earlier this month.
The incident happened April 13 at the Corner Market on Morgan Place. Capitol Police say a man walked up behind a 78-year-old woman while she was shopping, pushed her to the floor and walked out with her purse and cash.
Surveillance video captured the suspect, who has not been caught.
“They need to find him. They need to lock him up. Throw him away with the key. Put him way up under there,” said Terrel Ward, who shops at the store.
Earnest Powell, another shopper, said the incident was unfortunate.
“I just think these young people should just get a job,” Powell said.
Betty Mason, who shops at the store, said the suspect should be caught and punished.
Joe Carroll said the incident showed a blatant disregard to basic humanity.
“You don’t want to see it happen to anybody, much less someone that is that vulnerable and for it to happen the way that it did, in such a blatant disregard to basic humanity,” Carroll said.
Mason said the Fondren area is fairly safe, but the incident raises new questions about who is watching out for the most vulnerable shoppers.
“I think we all have to be very careful and keep our eyes moving all the time. As someone said, your eyes should be on your shoulders,” Mason said.
Capitol Police are asking anyone with information about the crime or the suspect to call them. A $2,500 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
