METAIRIE, La. (WVUE) – Drew Brees’ induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday (Aug. 8), cast a long shadow over Saints training camp the following morning, with fans and players alike reflecting on the quarterback’s impact on New Orleans and the franchise.
Brees, who arrived in New Orleans with a questionable throwing shoulder, said his connection to the city ran deeper than football.
“It doesn’t take you long to realize what makes New Orleans so special,” Brees said during his enshrinement speech.

In his speech, Brees credited New Orleans with shaping his career and his purpose.
“You accepted me, you embraced me, you believed in me. But more importantly, you trusted me with the soul of the city, and I would have died to protect that calling,” Brees said.
That trust culminated in the Saints’ first Super Bowl victory, a 31-17 upset over the Indianapolis Colts in February 2010. It’s a moment fans said they still carry with them.
“I remember where I was when we won the Super Bowl,” said Brandon Baham. “I was with my little brother and it was one of the best weekends of my life.”
Fan Bryan Chandler described Brees as “just the heart and soul of New Orleans. He’d die for it, and he did.”
Fans reflect on Brees’ Hall of Fame speech
Brees also drew on the city’s history of resilience in his remarks.
“Storms teach us that our greatest treasures aren’t the things we own. They’re the people we love,” he said.
Alan Moody called it “a very inspiring speech.”
Reginald James offered perspective on the significance of the gold jacket itself.
“I heard some people like to say it’s just people putting on gold jackets, but it’s definitely more than that because you get to acknowledge everything you’ve done in your career,” James said.
Brees’ legacy bridges to current Saints roster
At training camp in Metairie, current Saints quarterback Tyler Shough works under the weight of that legacy. Fans said they believe Brees sets a standard worth following.
Deacon Town, a young Pensacola native, said the Saints have given him reason for optimism heading into the new season.
“Chris Olave and Tyler Shough have good chemistry together. They’re the duo,” Town said. “We’ve got good wide receivers and hopefully Tyler Shough makes his throws.”
Brees’ reach extends well beyond the New Orleans metro. Kevin Davis, from the Shreveport area, noted that his fandom ran counter to regional trends.
“Everybody up there is a Cowboys fan. I’ve never been. I’ve always been a diehard Saints fan,” Davis said.
