YAZOO CITY, Miss. (WLBT) – A recently imposed curfew in Yazoo City has been lifted, according to new Police Chief Joseph Daughtry.

Mayor Macklyn Austin had put the curfew in place following a spike in crime. It limited public activity between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Thursday.

Yazoo City Mayor Macklyn Austin declared a state of emergency and is enforcing a citywide curfew following a shooting there Wednesday, July 30, following the shooting death of a 23-year-old.

“Do not be bold enough and ignorant enough to think and not take this curfew seriously,” Mayor Austin said when enforcing the curfew. “Please understand and spread this word. Things are totally out of control in Yazoo City. We’re [fixing to] put a stop to it.”

A heavy police presence was in place to enforce the curfew and urged people not to violate it.
