VICKSBURG, Miss. (WLBT/VDN) – A Vicksburg man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with a 2023 shooting.

Vicksburg Daily News reports that Judge James Chaney sentenced Larry Bell to 20 years in prison, with 10 years suspended and 10 years to serve, for the death of 20-year-old Brendyn Carmen.

Bell was originally charged with capital murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Defense attorney Noah Drake told the court that Bell had no prior criminal record and asked the judge to show leniency.

Bell’s mother also testified during the sentencing hearing, stating that her son had used his time in jail productively, including earning his SafeServ certification in culinary arts.

Bell addressed the court and apologized to the victim’s family.

“I just wanted to let you know that my condolences go out to the family of Brendyn, but I didn’t act until I was put in a position to fight for my life,” Bell said.

Assistant District Attorney Branan Southerland did not recommend a specific sentence and left the decision to the court.

Chaney said he considered Bell’s remorse and lack of criminal history before ordering him to serve 10 years, followed by 10 years suspended.
