Game of the Week: Jackson Prep vs. Jackson Academy
At the Brickyard, one of the state’s biggest rivalries took place between the Jackson Academy Raiders and the Jackson Prep Patriots in a key MAIS game.
The Raiders started a bit slow on offense but Quarterback Josef Walker was able to hit Jaydann Hollins to move the chains.
The Patriot defense was able to hold the Raiders to a field goal though, it’s up and good by Gabe Barnett to give Jackson Academy the early lead.
The Patriots tried to match Jackson Academy with a chip shot field goal, but the Raiders’ special teams came up huge with a blocked field goal to deny the Pats the three points.
Then, that high-powered Raiders’ offense woke up when Walker handed it off to Aaric Beasley who took it straight up the gut and all the way to the house for a huge touchdown to put the Raiders up 10-0.
The Patriot’s offense did show signs of life before the half when Luke Essary hit his receiver Aiden Rowe in stride for a huge gain to set the Pats up in the red zone.
A few plays later, Essary capped off the drive with a pass to Owen Brown to get Prep on the board before the teams headed for the locker room.
Still, the Raiders were able to hold onto that early lead to get to 6-1 on the season.
Final Score: Jackson Academy 16, Jackson Prep 7.
Next Opponents: Jackson Academy vs. Madison St. Joseph, Jackson Prep vs. Copiah Academy.
McComb vs. Columbia
It was a clash of two undefeated titans as the McComb Tigers and Columbia Wildcats both entered Friday night 6-0. It was the first time the two teams played each other in nearly a decade.
Columbia took an early 6-0 lead but the lead wouldn’t last for long.
McComb’s Tramarion Davis connected with Delwin Perkins for a touchdown to get the Tigers on the scoreboard. The PAT was good, giving McComb the 7-6 lead.
However, that lead would not hold up either.
In the end, Columbia would give McComb its first loss of the season to improve to 7-0 for the season.
The Wildcats won it 38 to 14.
Columbia now improves to 7-0 in the season.
Final Score: Columbia 38, McComb 14.
Next Opponents: Columbia vs. Tylertown, McComb vs. Lawrence County.
Brookhaven Academy vs. Parklane Academy
In McComb, it was homecoming for the undefeated Parklane Academy Pioneers as they hosted the Brookhaven Academy Cougars.
The Cougars started off hot on defense in this one when Cole Spencer snags a big interception early on to set up the Cougars with great field possession, but they could not find points off the turnover.
It was all Pioneers after that when Braxton Hughes connected with Brennan Ellison over the middle to get Parklane Academy on the board first.
The Cougars tried to regroup after that, but the Pioneers would get a pick of their own by Kaydon Jackson, which led to another touchdown for Parklane Academy.
The Pioneers shut out the Cougars in the first half and grabbed the big win to stay undefeated.
Final Score: Parklane Academy 35, Brookhaven Academy 0.
Next Opponents: Parklane Academy vs. MRA, Brookhaven Academy vs. Simpson Academy.
Tri-County Academy vs. Madison St. Joseph
The Madison St. Joseph Catholic Bruins hosted the Tri-County Academy Rebels, who came into the game on a four-game winning streak.
The Rebels came out swinging when Cooper Johnson kept the ball on a read option. The senior ran through defenders and made other defenders miss as he muscled his way across the goal line.
Johnson also had success through the air as the senior quarterback connected with his senior wide receiver Peyton Patridge for two first half touchdowns.
The senior duo and the Rebs offense seemed to be too much for the Bruins as the Rebels extended their winning streak to five games.
Final Score: Tri-County Academy 48, Madison St. Joseph 6.
Next Opponents: Tri-County Academy vs. Central Hinds Academy, Madison St. Joseph vs. Jackson Academy.
Ridgeland vs. Warren Central
Ridgeland entered Friday night’s matchup 5-0, one win away from matching last year’s win total.
However, looking spoil Ridgeland’s undefeated season is Warren Central, who came into Friday fresh off their bye week.
Nash Morgan had two touchdown runs in the first half to give the Vikings the early cushion.
The Vikings continued their success on the ground after that as well when sophomore running back Xavier Jackson took a handoff and ran it all the way across the goal line for the score, even carrying some defenders with him.
It was a close ballgame, but in the end, it’s the Vikings coming out on top, giving Ridgeland its first loss of the season.
Warren Central won by a score of 21-14.
Final Score: Warren Central 21, Ridgeland 14.
Next Opponents: Warren Central vs. Greenville, Ridgeland vs. Callaway (Thursday, Oct 16).
Starkville vs. Germantown
Starkville was in town on Friday to face Germantown and both teams were looking to jumpstart district play with a win.
The Mavericks wasted no time in this one. On the first play from scrimmage, King White found Lawson Branson on a short pass, and he broke it to the outside. 57 yards later, he is in for the touchdown to give Germantown an early 7-0 lead.
Later in the first, the Jackets made a gutsy call deep in their own territory with the fake punt. Upback Graham Hancock took the direct snap and he rumbled all the way down inside the Mavericks’ 20-yard-line.
The Germantown defense holds very strong though, stopping Starkville on four shots from first-and-goal and no go!
Germantown did get a 41-yard field goal late in the half to take a 10-7 lead.
The Mavericks held onto that lead for the rest of this game for their third-straight win.
Final Score: Germantown 45, Starkville 28.
Next Opponents: Germantown vs. Oxford, Starkville vs. Clinton.
Terry vs. Forest Hill
The undefeated Terry Bulldogs faced off against the Forest Hill Patriots Friday night.
The Bulldogs wasted no time getting things going when Brady Busby connected with Immanuel Harris outside the numbers for a touchdown.
Following the score, the Bulldogs caught the Patriots off guard with a squib kick and Terry recovered the loose ball to take over.
A few plays later, Busby went back to the air and once again connected with his senior playmaker Harris. The duo had a pair of second quarter touchdowns.
The Bulldogs keep their undefeated season alive and improve to 6-0 on the season
Final Score: Terry 24, Forest Hill 6.
Next Opponents: Terry vs. West Jones, Forest Hill vs. Hattiesburg (Thursday, Oct. 16).
Provine vs. Lanier
The Lanier Bulldogs put their undefeated record on the line on Friday against the Provine Rams.
Lanier struck first in this one off of an impressive run by Knolyn Bailey from 15 yards out for the touchdown to give the Bulldogs the early lead.
Provine would not go away easy though. Dekyhlan Dunson injected some life into the squad with an unbelievable one-handed catch, which was the End Zone Play of the Day.
That catch set up Jayden Thurman, who finished it off with a QB sneak from a yard out to make it an interesting game early.
Bailey was the thorn in the side of the Rams on Friday though. He would find the endzone once again on the Bulldogs’ next drive to take back the lead.
Lanier was able to hold onto that lead throughout as well to stay undefeated.
Final Score: Lanier 30, Provine 8.
Next Opponents: Lanier vs. Holmes County Central (Thursday, Oct. 16), Provine vs. Vicksburg.
Loyd Star vs. Wesson
It was another battle of the unbeatens when the Wesson Cobras faced off against the Loyd Star Hornets. Both teams entered 6-0.
While Loyd Star was undefeated this year so far, they’ve lost their last six games to Wesson.
Friday would be no different.
It was a wild one, but it was Wesson who came out on top.
Final Score: Wesson 49, Loyd Star 41.
Next Opponents: Wesson vs. Amite County, Loyd Star vs. Enterprise.
Lamar vs. Hartfield Academy
In Flowood, the Hartfield Academy Hawks looked to get back in the win column after three-straight losses in a matchup against the Lamar Raiders.
The Hawks were moving the ball well on their first drive, but here come the Raiders – it’s Tyler Brown and Nate Lee with the strip sack on Ethan Elliott to give the ball to the Raiders, but they were not able to cash in off the turnover.
On the Hawks’ second drive, Collin McIntyre got the carry, busts it to the outside, and it is a house call to give Hartfield Academy the early lead.
McIntyre was not done there either. He got another carry late in the first quarter that he would take all the way for his second touchdown of the game.
It was all Hartfield Academy as they end their losing streak to get to 2-5 on the season.
Final Score: Hartfield Academy 42, Lamar 7.
Next Opponents: Hartfield Academy vs. Heritage Academy, Lamar vs. Starkville Academy.
