Families of Oxford High School shooting victims react after board again rejects independent investigation

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The parents of two victims of the Nov. 30, 2021, shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan are demanding more transparency from the Oxford Community School District after the board voted against moving forward with an independent investigation into the tragedy last fall.

The Oxford Board of Education on Tuesday announced that the district has, for the second time, declined an offer from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to conduct a third-party investigation into the school shooting with the goal of determining how shooting suspect Ethan Crumbley, 15, managed to kill four students and injure seven others last fall.

“To me, this is an admission of guilt,” Buck Myre, father of deceased 16-year-old Tate Myre, said during a Thursday press conference. “They know that things didn’t go right that day, and they don’t want to stand up and fix it. They’re going to hide behind governmental immunity and they’re going to hide behind insurance and the lawyers. What’s this teach the kids? They’re in high school. … This is horrible leadership.”

“We just want accountability,” he added later when asked why an independent investigation is important to parents.

OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING VICTIM TATE MYRE’S FAMILY, OTHERS SUE CRUMBLEYS, SCHOOL STAFF

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald revealed in December 2021 that school officials met with Crumbley and his parents to discuss violent drawings he created just hours before the deadly rampage. The 15-year-old suspect was able to convince them during the meeting that the concerning drawings were for a “video game.” His parents “flatly refused” to take their son home.

The shooting has also resulted in several lawsuits, including two that seek $100 million in damages each, against the school district and school employees on behalf of the family of two sisters who attend the school.

Myre and Meghan Gregory, the mother of 15-year-old Keegan Gregory, who survived the shooting but witnessed and was traumatized by Crumbley’s rampage, are suing the shooting suspect’s parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, as well as school staff for negligence.

JENNIFER CRUMBLEY, ETHAN CRUMBLEY’S MOTHER, SENT OMINOUS TEXTS ON DAY OF SHOOTING: ‘HE CAN’T BE LEFT ALONE’

“They’re the ones that know what happened that day. They’re the ones that know what the breakdown would have been, where the breakdown happened, and that’s what we’re looking for,” Gregory said Thursday.  “I guess I’m more confused as to why the excuses? Is it because you are hiding behind something? Because that’s what it feels like to all of us out here saying let’s find out what happened that day so we can fix it.”

School board president Tom Donnelly did not immediately respond to an inquiry from Fox News Digital.

Attorney Ven Johnson, president of Ven Johnson Law, called the board’s decision a “horrible and sad, tragic development in this ongoing tragedy that has befallen” his clients and other Oxford High School families.

“The victims have been victimized again,” he said.

MICHIGAN SCHOOL SHOOTING SUSPECT ETHAN CRUMBLEY CHARGED WITH TERRORISM, MURDER: ‘NOT JUST AN IMPULSIVE ACT’

The school board released an update on Tuesday after their meeting saying that while they are committed to an independent investigation and have narrowed potential third-party investigators down to three entities, the entire process may take between three and five years because the district does not want to interfere with ongoing civil and criminal litigation

Parents said the school board did not reach out to families saying they were not moving forward with an independent investigation.

OWNER OF DINER WHERE ETHAN CRUMBLEY WORKED RECALLS SHOOTING SUSPECT: ‘NONE OF US NOTICED ANYTHING WAS ODD’

Nessel said she is “deeply saddened” by the board’s “repeated rejection” of her offers for an independent investigation into the events leading up to the Nov. 30, 2021, shooting.

“My goal is not to assign blame but to help identify ways to improve school safety for Oxford and all schools in Michigan,” she said in a Wednesday statement. “The school board’s unwillingness to partner with my department on this effort flies in the face of transparency. The rejection sends a message that the board is more focused on limiting liability than responding to the loud outcry from the Oxford community to deliver greater peace of mind to the students, parents and educators that lived through this traumatic event.”

The attorney general added that her department “can only perform an exhaustive and thorough review when we have the full cooperation of the school board and district.”

“Absent that partnership, I am restricted to the publicly available information we have all read and reviewed. Despite this outcome, I will return to Oxford in the coming weeks and continue my work to be a resource to the community,” she said. “This latest setback does not deter my efforts to share best practices across our state in order to help all schools improve the safety and security of their learning environments.”

Michigan kindergartener brings Jose Cuervo margaritas to snack time, made students ‘woozy’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A Michigan kindergartner brought a bottle of ready-to-drink Jose Cuervo margaritas to school and reportedly passed out drinks to multiple students.

The incident happened at Grand River Academy in Livonia, Michigan, where kindergartners were allegedly handed the drink by another student.

One of the parents of the kindergartners, Alexis Smith, said that her daughter had a Dixie cup full of the margarita drink, and took around 4 or 5 sips of the alcoholic drink, according to Fox 2 Detroit.

Another mother, Dominique Zanders, said that her daughter felt “woozy.”

“She felt woozy, a little dizzy,” Zanders said.

She added that her daughter was only told what was inside the drink after she drank it, and said that her daughter gave her a “funny face” when she told the teacher.

“The girl poured it in her cup and she drank it and the girl ended up telling her what it is, and she went and told the teacher there is liquor in this cup, and the teacher gave her a funny face,” Zanders said.

The alcoholic drink was brought to school in one of the student’s backpacks.

In a statement, the school said that it’s impossible to keep an eye on “everything our students bring to school.”

“While we try to keep an eye on everything our students bring to school, that’s simply not possible. It’s unfortunate that these types of adult beverages can be easily mistaken for child-friendly drinks,” the statement read.

The school also said that poison control was called after the kindergartners drank it, and said that parents were called immediately. The student will be disciplined, if necessary, according to the report.

Smith said that the parents of the child who brought the drink to school should be punished.

“If your child knows what it is, nothing wrong with it – but they should know not to touch it,” Smith said. “That it’s not for kids.”

Gov. Whitmer race impacted by fatal shooting, former police chief says ‘she’s not a real friend of policing’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The fatal shooting of a 26-year-old Black man by a Grand Rapids police officer this month has created a new source of contention in the Michigan governor’s race.

Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement Wednesday calling for a “transparent, independent investigation” into the shooting of Patrick Lyoya who was killed on April 4 after a traffic stop. She said she spoke to Lyoya’s family and “our hearts are with them and the Grand Rapids community who are dealing with unimaginable pain and loss.”

“He had his whole life ahead of him,” she said of Lyoya.

MICHIGAN POLICE RELEASE FOOTAGE OF OFFICER SHOOTING AND KILLING PATRICK LYOYA

Whitmer’s personal outreach to Lyoya’s family stood out to James Craig, the former Detroit Police Chief.

Craig told Fox News Digital he can’t recall any time when Whitmer called him when one of his officers died in the line the duty, whereas he’d get calls from former Gov. Rick Snyder, FBI Director Christopher Wray and former Attorney General William Barr to offer condolences.

“I can’t remember one time where I’ve ever gotten a call from the governor expressing sorrow or support,” Craig told Fox News Digital. “Not one. Unfortunately, I’ve had to deal with several officers who were killed in the line of duty.”

Craig, a Republican who is challenging Whitmer for governor, said the contrast of outreach “feels political to me.” He said Whitmer may have reached out to the Detroit mayor in those circumstances — he doesn’t know — but he says a governor should call the chiefs directly and “should be at the funeral” for the fallen.

“As far as I’m concerned, she’s not a real friend of policing,” Craig told Fox News Digital.

OHIO LT. GOV BLASTS MICHIGAN GOV. WHITMER FOR ‘UNREASONABLE, IRRESPONSIBLE’ EFFORT TO SHUT DOWN OIL PIPELINE

A spokesman for Whitmer, Bobby Leddy, didn’t comment on whether the governor called Craig directly, but he said that “when a member of law enforcement dies in the line of duty, Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist II immediately turn their attention to the families and loved ones.”

The governor’s office provided 11 examples when the Whitmer administration lowered flags across the state and issued statements of condolences for fallen police officers and firefighters, including Detroit Police Officer Rasheen McClain.

“Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist II have called family members or met with them at funerals to offer their deepest condolences and the assistance of the state of Michigan as they go through an unimaginable loss,” Leddy said in a statement. “Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist also lower the flags across the state in honor of fallen law enforcement or firefighters, and the flag is presented to the families.”

At least three Detroit police officers died while Craig was chief and Whitmer was governor, according to “The Officer Down Memorial Page” that tracks police deaths.

Grand Rapids police released video this week of the shooting of Lyoya, which has sparked protests in Grand Rapids and demands for justice from his family who want the officer who killed their son criminally charged. They’ve said the shooting to “back of the head” was an unjustified use of fatal force and tantamount to an “execution.”

The officer, a White man who has not been identified, allegedly pulled Lyoya over on the morning of April 4 because his car’s tags didn’t belong to the vehicle.

Lyoya, who is from the Democratic Republic of Congo, got out of the car before the officer could reach him, according to the footage from police. The officer asked for his license and told him to get back in the car, but Lyoya refused, then started running away.

According to the video released by police, after a brief foot chase, the officer grabbed Lyoya and the two started struggling for the officer’s Taser. The Taser was deployed twice, but didn’t make contact, according to police. After about two minutes, the video shows the officer pulled his handgun and shot Lyoya once in the head, killing him.

“You see a police officer escalate a minor traffic stop into a deadly execution,” Lyoya family attorney Benjamin Crump said Thursday of the videos.

Whitmer’s statement after the shooting said prosecutors will consider the evidence, follow the law and “take appropriate action on charges.”

“Justice is foundational to safety, and without justice, we are all less safe,” she said.

Whitmer’s office also provided background information on her efforts to enact criminal justice reforms and prioritize public safety.

Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon drew praise from American Conservative Union President Matt Schlapp at the Dallas CPAC conference over the weekend.  (Tyler Olson/Fox News)

Another GOP challenger to Whitmer, Tudor Dixon, put out a statement in support of the police officer, saying Lyoya refused to comply with officer, “chose to take control” of the officer’s Taser and “to physically and aggressively resist.”

She blasted Whitmer for taking “the side of the criminal” and said she’d expect nothing less from the “defund the police” party. Dixon also criticized her “Republican opponents” for “cowering in fear” and issuing “mealy-mouthed ‘let’s wait and see’ statements.”

“I stand unequivocally with the police officer and our law enforcement officers in general,” Dixon said in a statement.

Craig, however, backs Whitmer’s call for an investigation and said he doesn’t know all the facts to say whether the officer acted appropriately — and neither does Dixon.

It would be “totally improper for me, without knowing all the facts, to say everything that happened in this instance was proper.”

Jack White stuns fans with engagement and marriage at concert

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rock star Jack White stunned fans in Detroit Friday when he proposed to his girlfriend and got married on stage.

“I’ve got a little question for you, Olivia Jean,” White asked his girlfriend and fellow musician Olivia Jean while on stage at the Masonic Temple in his hometown of Detroit. “Will you marry me?”

The musician, best known for his band The White Stripes, and his girlfriend had been singing the 2001 song “Hotel Yorba” when he popped the question, The Detroit News reported. He resumed the song after she said yes, beginning again with the song’s line: “Let’s get married.”

But the excitement didn’t end there.

The couple was married on stage by Third Man Records co-founder Ben Swank during the encore portion of the concert, the Detroit Free Press reported. The respective bass players for White and Jean served as the best man and maid of honor, while White’s mother, Teresa Gillis, served as a witness.

This is White’s third marriage and details on how long he had been dating Jean are unclear. Both are Detroit natives.

Girls brawl outside Detroit Shake Shack but no police report filed

A brawl broke out in Detroit between 10 to 12 young females outside of a Shake Shack on Monday.

“I’m looking and I see the green burger (logo) on their shirts and I said they’re the Shake Shack girls,” witness Jason Taylor told Fox 2 Detroit of seeing the group of women brawling in a parking lot outside of the burger chain. “I told my cousin, ‘No Shake Shack today, buddy.’”

The outlet reported that between 10 and 12 teenaged girls exited the Shake Shack after an argument, and proceeded to fight outside the establishment.

Joe Exotic, Assange, Snowden: Here’s who wanted a Trump pardon but didn’t get one

Although former President Donald Trump issued more than 73 pardons and 70 commutations before his departure from the White House on Wednesday, some popular names were not included on the list.

Recipients included former White House adviser Steve Bannon, former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, and rappers Lil Wayne and Kodak Black.

TRUMP PARDONS STEVE BANNON, LIL WAYNE, DOZENS OF OTHERS; ALSO COMMUTES SENTENCES

Bannon is awaiting trial after allegedly defrauding Trump-supporting donors, Kilpatrick has served part of a 28-year sentence on corruption charges, and Lil Wayne and Kodak Black — whose real names are Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. and Bill Kapri, respectively — have been convicted on weapons-related charges.

Although there were questions raised as to whether or not Trump would pardon himself or his family members on the way out the door, sources told Fox News that he was not expected to do so and did not before President Biden was sworn in on Wednesday afternoon.

    Joe Exotic

Joseph Maldonado-Passage, also known as “Joe Exotic” from Netflix’s “Tiger King” documentary series, did not receive a pardon, though his team had reported on Monday they were “confident” one would be forthcoming.

“We will be standing by waiting for President Trump’s confirmation of the Tiger King Joe Exotic,” private investigator Eric Love, who is part of Exotic’s legal team, said Tuesday. “Much love to the fans. Thank you so much for all the support. God bless. We’ll see you as soon as we get the pardon.”

Love had been waiting inside a limousine to pick Maldonado-Passage up from a Texas prison if he was pardoned, according to KFOR-TV. He said that they had brought supplies for “hair, makeup, wardrobes” in addition to a doctor and mental health expert in the event of his release.

Maldonado-Passage, 57, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in a murder-for-hire plot that targeted his rival, Carole Baskin.

This file photo provided by the Santa Rosa County Jail in Milton, Fla., shows Joseph Maldonado-Passage, also known as “Joe Exotic.” Maldonado-Passage was convicted in an unsuccessful murder-for-hire plot against Carole Baskin, the founder of Big Cat Rescue, who he has repeatedly accused of killing her husband Jack “Don” Lewis. Lewis’ unsolved 1997 disappearance and Maldonado-Passage’s accusations are the subject of new Netflix series “Tiger King.” (Santa Rosa County Jail via AP, File)

    Julian Assange

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, 49, was also not on the list, though both “Baywatch” star Pamela Anderson and whistleblower Edward Snowden appealed to Trump.

The jailed publisher is being held in London following his eviction from the Ecuadorian Embassy, where he had been living in 2019.

Earlier this month, U.K. District Judge Vanessa Baraitser ruled against a request to extradite Assange to the U.S. where he faces espionage charges after publishing classified intelligence more than a decade ago.

The charges carry a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison.

The judge cited Assange’s mental health in the decision.

“We are enormously gratified by the U.K. court’s decision denying extradition,” Barry Pollack — a Washington, D.C.-based lawyer for Assange, told Fox News in a statement. “The effort by the United States to prosecute Julian Assange and seek his extradition was ill-advised from the start.”

The U.S. Government has since lodged an appeal against the decision to block his extradition.

Assange’s mother, Christine Assange, said she was “not shocked, just disappointed” by Trump’s decision.

“Courage is not always contagious,” she tweeted.

    Edward Snowden

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden also faces a sentence of up to 175 years in prison if convicted on charges of violating the Espionage Act, conspiring to hack government computers, and “unlawfully obtaining and disclosing classified documents related to the national defense.”

The 37-year-old fled the U.S. after leaking agency files in 2013 and was later given asylum in Russia.

In November, Snowden announced that he and his wife would apply for Russian citizenship for the sake of their family and ahead of the birth of their child.

Although many were opposed to a pardon for Snowden, Trump said he was considering granting clemency in August.

Following the White House’s release of the list of pardons, Snowden tweeted that he was “not at all disappointed to go unpardoned by a man who has never known a love he had not paid for.”

“But what supporters of his remain must never forgive that this simpering creature failed to pardon truth-tellers in far more desperate circumstances,” he said.

    Ross Ulbricht

Ross Ulbricht, the founder of darknet website Silk Road, was reportedly considered for a pardon last month but also absent from Trump’s list.

Silk Road reportedly enabled users to mask their identities while purchasing illegal goods.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-W.Va., has been a vocal advocate for pardoning both Ulbricht and Snowden.

    ‘QAnon Shaman’

Jacob Anthony Chansley, who goes by Jake Angeli, was also not pardoned this week — though his attorney Albert Watkins said that it would be “appropriate and honorable” to do so.

Chansley, 33, was nicknamed “QAnon Shaman” after he was pictured in viral photos storming the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 wearing face paint and a bearskin headdress with horns.

Last week, Chansley was charged in a federal court with civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, disorderly conduct in a restricted building, demonstrating in a Capitol building, entering a restricted building without lawful authority, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

In a previous statement, Watkins said that his client had not participated in violence and had “accepted President Trump’s invitation to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol.”

Chansley is currently being held in a federal facility in Phoenix.

No one in connection with the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol received a pardon.

“No one was holding their breath on the request and, as such, there is no need to exhale,” Watkins said, according to KMOV.

Michigan driver arrested after pulling ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ stunt over Detroit bridge

A Michigan man was arrested Wednesday night after apparently jumping a Detroit drawbridge in “Dukes of Hazzard” fashion, according to multiple reports.

The Allen Park driver, 26, was behind the wheel of a Dodge sedan when he accelerated and attempted to cross the Fort Street bascule bridge around 7 p.m. on Wednesday — as it was rising.

“I looked, I said, ‘No he ain’t,’” drawbridge operator Andre Locke told Detroit’s WDIV-TV. “Over he went, blew out all four of his tires, and then he crashed into the other gate.”

Detroit police mentioned the incident as something from “Dukes of Hazzard” when dispatching the call, while Locke said it was more like the 1980s comedy “The Blues Brothers,” according to the station.

Authorities said the driver managed to get to the other side successfully before he “allegedly damaged the safety gates” and his own tires, The Detroit News reported. He was uninjured following the jump and it’s not clear why he attempted it.
