Australian former cricketer Andrew Symonds dies in tragic accident

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Beloved former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds was killed in a car accident Saturday, according to authorities. He was 46.

Queensland Police said Symonds was driving a car in Hervey Range, about 30 miles from Townsville, when the vehicle left the roadway and rolled around 11 p.m.

“Emergency services attempted to revive the 46-year-old driver and sole occupant, however he died of his injuries,” police said. “The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.”

Born in Birmingham, England, but raised in Australia, the 6-foot-2 Symonds was known as a big-hitting all-rounder during his time playing the sport.

Symonds played 198 one-day internationals for Australia, winning World Cup titles in 2003 and 2007. He came into his own at the 2003 World Cup when he was far from established on the Australian team.

“Australian cricket has lost another of its very best. Andrew was a generational talent who was instrumental in Australia’s success at World Cups and as part of Queensland’s rich cricket history,” Cricket Australia Chairman Lachlan Henderson said in a statement Sunday. “He was a cult figure to many (and) was treasured by his fans and friends.”

Symonds also played 26 test matches for Australia from 2004 to 2008, with the 2007-2008 season being his most prolific. He also played for Queensland for 17 seasons, as well as the Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, the BBC reported. He also spent time playing county cricket in the United Kingdom.

A big fan of rugby, Symonds famously used a shoulder charge to take on a streaker who invaded the pitch during a one-day international match against India.

AUSTRALIA BEATS NEW ZEALAND TO CLAIM TWENTY20 WORLD CUP

“In the heat of competition there’s a lot of adrenaline, and when someone interrupts the match like that it can be frustrating,” he said of the incident years later.

Australia’s National Rugby League planned a moment of silence ahead of a match Sunday between the North Queensland Cowboys and Wests Tigers in Brisbane.

After his cricket playing career, Symonds became a popular commentator.

Former Australian captain Allan Border said Symonds “hit the ball a long way and just wanted to entertain.”

“He was, in a way, a little bit of an old-fashioned cricketer,” Border told the Nine Network. “He was an adventurer, loved his fishing, he loved hiking, camping. People liked his very laid-back style.”

Symonds was able to keep a child-like love of cricket over the years, according to another former captain, Mark Taylor.

“He was an entertainer in an era where professionalism really is a throwaway word that we use probably too often,” Taylor told the outlet. “He wanted to go out there and have fun and play the game he remembered as a kid.

“At times he got in trouble for not going to training or maybe having a few too many beers, but that is the way he lived his life and the way he wanted to play his cricket also.”

His death was another shocking blow to Australian cricket following the tragic death of legendary leg-spinner Shane Warne in March.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The body of an unconscious diver washed up on an Australian riverbank near 110 pounds of suspected cocaine worth $14 million on Monday morning, police in New South Wales said Tuesday.

Emergency personnel performed lifesaving measures on the diver, but the man died at the scene.

Several packages containing a white powder that authorities believe is cocaine were located “in the immediate vicinity” of the diver.

Australian man who insulted Chinese President Xi Jinping says police told him he will be charged

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

An Australian man who held up a sign displaying an insult against Chinese President Xi Jinping at a busy Asian market in Sydney said he’s been told by authorities he could be charged over the incident even though he was reportedly attacked by Chinese nationalists.

Drew Pavlou was filmed holding the sign that read “F*** Xi Jinping” in Chinese on Saturday at the Eastwood Plaza. The signage quickly triggered an angry reaction from some shoppers, some of whom vented their frustration, according to footage of the incident on Pavlou’s Twitter account.

.The video shows angry people confronting him.

“America has genocide,” according to subtitles in a video of the incident.

    WARNING: GRAPHIC LANGUAGE

Another man snatches the sign and throws it to the ground. One said he was “disrespecting Chinese here.” During the encounter, Pavlou tells the crowd he is non-violent.

He later tweeted that the New South Wales Police Force contacted him to inform him that detectives were investigating him and that he would likely be charged.

“NSW Police want to charge me for holding a sign insulting Xi Jinping while campaigning in Sydney,” Lavlou wrote. “They won’t even tell me what I’m being charged with. I’m sick of attacks on free speech, Australia desperately needs a Bill of Rights to protect free expression.”

He also tweeted about the Chinese government’s oppression of Uyghur Muslims who have been rounded up and detained in camps.

A spokesperson for the police force declined to confirm that Pavlou was being investigated but said they were investigating an alleged assault that occurred during a political protest at the Eastwood Plaza.

“Following inquiries, investigators attended an Eastwood home and spoke with a 48-year-old man about 4.30pm today,” a police statement said. “He was issued a court attendance notice for Common Assault and is due to appear at Hornsby Local Court on Wednesday.”

In a tweet, Pavlou called threats of being charged an “intimidation tactic.”

In a Facebook post, he said he was making a simple point.

“I should be able to insult a dictator like Xi Jinping in my own country without being physically assaulted & attacked. Australia is a democracy and we should be free to insult any leader no matter how coarsely – this is a simple principle of free speech,” he wrote. “No way would I have been surrounded by 50 people and physically assaulted if I held up a sign saying “F*** Scott Morrison” in Sydney. Why should Chinese ultra-nationalists get a free pass to assault people in Australia if someone insults Xi Jinping?”

Australian woman set fire to COVID-19 quarantine hotel, police say

An Australian woman is facing arson charges after she allegedly set fire to the COVID-19 quarantine hotel where she was staying with her two children, police said.

The woman lit a fire underneath her bed at the Pacific Hotel Cairns in the northern city of Cairns early Sunday, according to police.

    Cairns City (Queensland Police)

The fire scorched much of the 11th floor. More than 100 people were evacuated. There were no reports of serious injuries, police said.

Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Hodgman said the woman has been arrested and police are caring for her children, Reuters reported.

Domino’s tests viral watermelon pizza recipe with its own twist, TikTok creator chimes in

Domino’s Australia jumped on a viral TikTok creation – watermelon pizza – and doesn’t seem to be impressed.

“Y’all keep asking us for a low carb option,” the pizza chain captioned their review video on Monday, and credited Oliver Paterson (AKA El Burrito Monster) as its source for inspiration.

Paterson had created a watermelon pizza recipe in June that went viral on TikTok with more than 3.4 million views. However, his recipe called for barbecue sauce and chorizo while Domino’s opted for tomato sauce and pepperoni slices.

LIZZO TRIES TIKTOK’S MUSTARD ON WATERMELON TREND: ‘I DON’T UNDERSTAND’

The pizza chain determined watermelon pizza “might be acquired taste,” but Paterson told Fox News that the pizza chain might have a better experience following his recipe.

“I’ve seen people attempt to recreate it but get the key details wrong to make it work – the watermelon needs to be cooked before the toppings go on to remove as much moisture as possible to avoid a soggy mess,” Paterson wrote in an Instagram direct message. “Also it’s very vital to use BBQ sauce rather than marinara/tomato. BBQ is already a tried and tested flavor combination with watermelon. Tomato (I haven’t tried myself but would assume) simply does not work, so with these two errors it’s unsurprising they did not enjoy their recreation.”

11 WONDERFULLY CREATIVE WAYS TO SERVE WATERMELON THIS SUMMER

Paterson went on to add that he’s gone on to make his viral watermelon recipe for several people who have reportedly enjoyed the unconventional dish.

“It tastes sweet and smoky, with fatty salty richness from the cheese and chorizo,” he shared when describing the flavor.

PIZZA IS THE ‘MOST EXPENSIVE’ IN THESE 9 STATES

Paterson said he felt inspired to try watermelon pizza after he saw a contestant on the Netflix cooking show “Crazy Delicious” win a round with their barbecue watermelon creation.

“The judges really liked it so I decided to recreate it myself,” he wrote to Fox News. “It came out really great so I wanted to put my own twist on it, and with the pineapple on pizza debate raging, I decided to switch to watermelon as I don’t really like pineapple, but then thought I would make watermelon the base for the pizza as it was just the right size for it.”

While Paterson knew his watermelon pizza recipe would likely elicit a strong reaction when he shared it on social media, he said he’s still surprised at how many people it has reached.

“I half expected it to cause a bit of controversy but didn’t expect it to go as far as it did,” Paterson said. “It’s far off my most viewed TikTok but it’s definitely the video that got the most mainstream attention.”
