    Rob Gronkowski announces retirement from the NFL

    Rob Gronkowski announced he was going to retire from the NFL after a stellar career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New England Patriots.

    Gronkowski told sports journalist Jordan Schultz the news and announced on Instagram he was going to walk away.

    “In college, I was asked to write about a dream job opportunity that I wanted to pursue and where the location would be. Every time I had to write about my future, no matter what, I picked being a professional football player. For that assignment though, we had to pick the location,” Gronkowski wrote on Instagram. 

    “So I wrote that I wanted to play in Tampa for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for many reasons, the sunny weather being #1. I completely forgot about writing this report until 2 years ago when I had the opportunity to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And let me tell ya, the journey in Tampa over the last 2 years has blown away what I originally wrote about in college, big time. And for this, I want to thank the whole entire first class Buccaneers organization for an amazing ride, trusting me to come back to play and help build a championship team. 

    “I will now be going back into my retirement home, walking away from football again with my head held high knowing I gave it everything I had, good or bad, every time I stepped out on the field. The friendships and relationships I have made will last forever, and I appreciate every single one of my teammates and coaches for giving everything they had as well. From retirement, back to football and winning another championship and now back to chilling out, thank you to all. Buccaneers fans, the Krewe, without you guys, none of this is possible, all of ya brought it every game, thank you for all you do. Cheers to what’s next, maybe sailing the seas.”

    Yankees first MLB team to 50 wins this season

    The New York Yankees became the first team in Major League Baseball to hit the 50-win mark thanks to their latest victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

    New York got 7 1/3 innings from Gerrit Cole before it was broken up in the eighth inning. Tampa Bay tied the 2-0 game in the same inning thanks to a run-scoring groundout from Yandy Diaz and an infield single from Manuel Margot.

    But clutch hitting lifted New York in the ninth.

    Aaron Hicks tripled to score Josh Donaldson and then a Jose Trevino sac-fly scored Hicks. The Yankees sealed the victory in the bottom of the inning. Cole ended up with the no-decision while Wandy Peralta was given the win for one inning of work, a strikeout and a loss.

    “For us to answer back like that just shows what this team’s about,” Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said. “We don’t just live or die by the long ball. We’re just a good all-around team.”

    Judge went 0-for-3 with a walk but has been on a torrid home-run pace. He has 25 home runs and is hitting .301 with a 1.026 OPS.

    New York moved to 50-17 with the victory.

    Cole finished with 12 strikeouts and was hit with an earned run.

    “He was just cruising. I guess it was just a normal Cole day,” Judge added. “He had all his pitches working tonight. Just to be able to use all those pitches in any count, in any situation, is pretty impressive.”

    New York manager Aaron Boone lauded the comeback victory.

    “Any time you get to the eighth inning, you’re starting to smell it and it gets close. But once (the no-hitter) goes by the wayside and it’s tie game, it’s right back to: ‘Let’s go find a way to get this thing done,’” Boone said. “Just a good resilient victory and a lot of good things that helped us get there.”

    Brooks Koepka the latest PGA Tour member to join LIV Golf: reports

    Eight-time PGA Tour winner Brooks Koepka is the latest golfer to join the rival Saudi-backed golf league for its second event, slated for next week, according to multiple reports. 

    Koepka, 32, is expected to join Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, and Dustin Johnson at the Pumpkin Ridge Gold Club for the first LIV Golf Invitational Portland beginning next Friday, The Telegraph first reported Tuesday.

    Sources told ESPN that the official announcement is expected to come sometime this week. 

    The four-time major winner’s decision to join the controversial league comes just a week after he took aim at reporters during the U.S. Open over their focus on LIV.

    “I don’t understand. I’m trying to focus on the U.S. Open, man. I legitimately don’t get it. I’m tired of the conversations. I’m tired of all this stuff,” Koepka said. 

    “Like I said, y’all are throwing a black cloud on the U.S. Open. I think that sucks. I actually do feel bad for them for once because it’s a sh—y situation. We’re here to play, and you are talking about an event that happened last week.”

    Several of the PGA Tour’s top-ranked players have decided to join the league despite the Tour’s stance that it would not grant players releases to join the circuit.

    Last month, commissioner Jay Monahan announced that the 17 players, who at the time announced their decision to play on the LIV Golf tour or resigned their memberships in order to do so, would be suspended from participating in PGA Tour-related events. 

    However, the notable purse sizes were enough to still draw players in. 

    Two-time PGA Tour winner Charl Schwartzel became the first-ever LIV Golf Invitational champion last week and took home a whopping $4.75 million.

    “The guys put up an amazing show,” Schwartzel, the former Masters champion, said after the match. “What they’ve done was way beyond our expectations. The entertainment. The way they treat everybody. You know, the amount of money they put up for is out of this world.” 

    According to ESPN, Monahan is expected to speak with the media on Wednesday.

    Deshaun Watson settles with 20 of 24 women who accused him of sexual misconduct, attorney says

    Deshaun Watson agreed to a confidential settlement with 20 of his 24 sexual misconduct accusers, an attorney for the women said Tuesday.

    The Cleveland Browns quarterback faced a number of accusations in multiple lawsuits about sexual misconduct with massage therapists. He was cleared of criminal wrongdoing by two Texas grand juries as the suits were filed in the state.

    “Today I announce that all cases against Deshaun Watson, with the exception of four, have settled,” Tony Buzbee said in a statement. “We are working through the paperwork related to those settlements. Once we have done so, those particular cases will be dismissed. The terms and amounts of the settlements are confidential. We won’t comment further on the settlements or those cases.”

    Watson has repeatedly denied the allegations, which ranged from masturbating in front the women, ejaculating on women and situating himself during the massage to make the masseuse touch his groin area. According to a New York Times report, Watson had booked time with 66 massage therapists over a 17-month span.

    He told reporters last week he was still in the process of clearing his name. He again reiterated to reporters he never “forced” or “assaulted” anyone.

    “I’ve never forced anyone. I’ve never assaulted anyone. I’ve been saying it from the beginning and I’m going to continue to say it,” Watson said, via the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “I understand these allegations are very serious. … I’m focused on clearing my name.”

    The accusations stemmed from when Watson was a member of the Houston Texans. He sat out the 2021 season while the lawsuits came in and waited to be traded. The Texans traded him to the Browns in the offseason and he signed a lucrative contract extension simultaneously.

    Meanwhile, Buzbee said the Texans would be named in the lawsuits after The Times reported a team official provided Watson with non-disclosure agreements. Watson reportedly received the NDAs from the “head of security for the Texans.” It’s unclear whether the team will still be involved in litigation.

    Watson is still facing four lawsuits, with two more potentially coming.

    The NFL was still investigating the Watson case and has yet to levy any punishment on the quarterback.

    Caleb Swanigan, former Purdue standout and first-round NBA draft pick, dead at 25

    Caleb Swanigan, the 2017 Big Ten Player of the Year and standout at Purdue, has died, the school said Tuesday. He was 25.

    Purdue announced Swanigan’s death on Twitter.

    “Devastated. Our thoughts and prayers to Caleb Swanigan’s family and friends. The world lost a gentle soul last night,” the tweet read. “Love you Biggie.”

    The Allen County Coroner’s Office, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, told WANE-TV that Swanigan died of natural causes.

    Tributes poured in for Swanigan on Twitter.

    Swanigan was a standout basketball player. He was a McDonald’s All American and named Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2015 before playing for Purdue. He helped the United States U17 and U19  national teams to gold medals in their respective World Championships.

    With the Boilermakers, he was the Big Ten Player of the Year and a Consensus All-American in 2017 before turning pro. He broke the school’s single-season record for rebounds and double-doubles that year.

    The Portland Trail Blazers selected him in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft. He was the 26th overall selection. He played for the Trail Blazers from 2017-2019 while also spending time in the G-League with the Canton Charge and Texas Legends. He played for the Sacramento Kings during the 2019-20 season and later played 20 games for the Trail Blazers in 2020.

    Swanigan also experienced homelessness early in his life.

    According to an ESPN profile, Swanigan said he lived in five different homeless shelters during his family’s travels between Indianapolis and Utah. He said he had been in more than a dozen different schools by the time he was 13.

    Stanley Cup Final 2022: Lightning’s Jon Cooper takes issue with NHL replay system

    The Tampa Bay Lightning caught a break in the first period against the Colorado Avalanche when an early goal was waved off due to defenseman Bowen Byram being offside.

    Lightning coach Jon Cooper challenged the goal after Valeri Nichushkin put one in the back of the net past Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. After the game, Cooper said he did not think it should be up to the coaches to make the call whether the play should be reviewed.

    “I’m a believer — and I don’t know if I’m in the minority on this — but I don’t know if that should be in our hands. If it’s either onside or offside, I just don’t know why I have to make that decision when the stakes are this high,” Cooper said, via ESPN.

    “Here’s the issue, and I’ve stated this before. We’re at the mercy of the replays we get. So somebody could unplug something up top, we can have no replays and something that is a black and white call might be missed.”

    Part of the issue was how long it took for officials to make the call on whether the goal should be reversed, which appeared to be the main takeaway from both sides.

    “That’s how close it was. I don’t know how many angles they looked at, but it must have been a bunch for it to take that long,” Cooper said. “At the very end, an angle came in. It was an end zone angle, and I don’t know where we got it from. The guys inside couldn’t tell if it was white [ice] or if it was grainy. And I said, ‘Well, let’s go with the white.”

    Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen added: “I don’t think the [linesman] can drop the puck if nobody is there. I guess he can, but it’s never happened before. Good job by them, waiting, waiting and making sure it was offside. Good for them.”

    Colorado would score again on a legitimate goal thanks to Gabriel Landeskog. He would score again in the second period, and it would be the only two goals Colorado would score in the game.

    Tampa Bay would win the game 6-2 in Game 3. The Avalanche are up 2-1 in the series.

    Stanley Cup Final 2022: Lightning strike back with Game 3 beat down of Avalanche

    The Tampa Bay Lightning woke up in Game 3.

    The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning doused the Colorado Avalanche with four goals in the second period on their way to getting their first win in the series, 6-2.

    Tampa Bay came up big in the second period to bounce back from a 7-0 shutout in Game 2 and make it a series against Colorado.

    It looked like it was going to be more of the same from the Avalanche early in the game. Gabriel Landeskog scored the first goal of the game on a power play opportunity on assists from Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar. It was Landeskog’s 10th goal of the postseason.

    It would have put Colorado up 2-0 but an early goal by the Avalanche was waved off because of an offside call.

    Tampa Bay would score their first goal since Game 1 less than 5 minutes after the Landeskog goal thanks to Anthony Cirelli. The Lightning got the lead woth an Ondrej Palat score more than a minute later.

    The second period would be where the Lightning really broke the game open.

    Tampa Bay scored four goals from four different players in the period and eventually chased Avalanche goaltender Darcy Kuemper out of the net. Nick Paul, Steven Stamkos, Pat Maroon and Corey Perry. Pavel Francouz came in and only allowed one goal to the Lightning.

    Kuemper had 17 saves but allowed five goals. Francouz had nine saves.

    It was Stamkos’ 10th goal of the season. Landeskog would get one past Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy in between Paul and Stamkos’ scores.

    Vasilevskiy had 37 saves in the win.

    Tampa Bay bounced back nicely to cut the deficit in the series to 2-1. Colorado hadn’t lost a playoff game since May 25 – an overtime defeat by the St. Louis Blues.

    The Lightning will look to tie the series up at 2 apiece with a win in Game 4 on Wednesday night. The Lightning were also down 2-0 to the New York Rangers before coming back to win the Eastern Conference final.

    Game 4 will take place in Tampa, Florida, at 8 p.m. ET.

    Warriors parade: Draymond Green delivers fiery message to critics after another title

    Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green delivered a fiery message to the critics and doubters during the team’s championship parade on Monday.

    Green reminded the crowd they told them they were better than everybody else and proved it with a 4-2 series victory over the Boston Celtics to secure a fourth championship in eight years last week.

    Green along with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala won their fourth ring.

    The star forward earned his fourth All-Star appearance this season. He averaged 7.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 7 assists per game. In 22 games in the playoffs, he averaged 8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists.

    Kyrie Irving sends cryptic tweet after report on extension negotiations with Nets

    Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving sent out a cryptic tweet following a report that he and the team were at an “impasse” over contract negotiations, and he may test free agency this summer.

    The Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers were rumored to be the two teams interested in trading for Irving, The Athletic reported Monday. Irving would have to opt into his contract for any trade to occur since those teams have salary-cap constraints.

    The New York Knicks are rumored to be interested in acquiring Irving as well, but would have to either cut or trade a bunch of players to open up their own options for Irving or find a trade and match the contracts.

    In an apparent response to the report, Irving issued a cryptic tweet from the critically acclaimed HBO series “The Wire.”

    Brooklyn’s general manager Sean Marks said last month that conversations about Irving’s deal were ongoing, but he was noncommittal about the point guard’s future with the franchise.

    “So he has to look at what he’s going to do with his player option and so forth like that,” Marks said. “I think we know what we’re looking for. We’re looking for guys that want to come in here and be part of something bigger than themselves. Play selfless, play team basketball, and be available … and that goes not only for Kyrie but for everybody here.”

    Irving expressed interest in staying in Brooklyn.

    He and Kevin Durant signed with the Nets prior to the start of the 2019-20 season and both have had their share of injuries during their time with Brooklyn. The team has not gotten further than the Eastern Conference semifinals in the playoffs.

    Matt Fitzpatrick needed a miracle to hold off Will Zalatoris on Sunday in the final round of the U.S. Open, and his win came down to the final hole.

    Fitzpatrick held a one-stroke lead going into 18. His tee shot sailed into the bunker, raising eyebrows and potentially opening a door for Zalatoris to force a playoff. However, on the second shot from the bunker, Fitzpatrick managed to lift it out of the sand and 18 feet away from the hole.

    It was a career-defining shot for Fitzpatrick.

    “It’s one of the best shots I ever hit, no doubt about it,” the Englishman said.

    It was Fitzpatrick’s first major victory of his career at one of the toughest courses, The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. He was coming off his best finish at the PGA Championship last month in which he finished tied for fifth.

    He is only the second player to win the men’s U.S. Open and the men’s U.S. Amateur at the same venue. Jack Nicklaus is the only other golfer to pull off the feat.

    “The feeling’s out of this world,” Fitzpatrick said. “It is so cliche, but it’s stuff you dream of as a kid. Yeah, to achieve it, I can retire a happy man tomorrow.”

    Zalatoris had a chance to send it to a playoff, but his long putt was inches away.

    “When it was two feet out, I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, that one’s in,’ and for some reason it went off to the left,” said Scottie Scheffler, who finished tied for second with Zalatoris. “It’s one of those deals. You’ve got to get the breaks.”

    Fitzpatrick started to get hot once May started.

    He finished tied for second with Cameron Young and Keegan Bradley at the Wells Fargo Championship. He carried that momentum into the PGA Championship, finishing two strokes off the lead behind Justin Thomas and Zalatoris.

    Though he missed the cut at Memorial, he bounced back at the RBC Championship with a top-10 finish. It all culminated in his first major championship at the U.S. Open.

    He finished his U.S. Open title with a total of 274, including a 68 in the final round. He finished Sunday with five birdies and three bogeys.
