Couple speaks out after video game-themed wedding cake topper unexpectedly goes viral

Social media users branded a humorous wedding cake topper that highlighted a groom’s love for video games as offensive, but the couple behind the requested figurines say that’s not what they meant.

Perla Blanco and Gerardo Martinez got married in late July after four years of dating. Their special day, which was celebrated in Monterrey, Mexico, with close family and friends, went viral on TikTok when their guest Leonardo Aceves shared a clip of their unique wedding cake.

The top-tier featured a wedding cake topper of a bride and groom, but instead of going the traditional route, the bride is standing cross-armed with her bouquet in hand while the groom plays “Call of Duty: Warzone.”

HUNTING-THEMED GROOM’S CAKE MOCKED, RIDICULED ON REDDIT: ‘OVER THE TOP GROSS’

“HAHAHAHA love this cake,” Aceves captioned the clip in Spanish, in addition to wishing the Blanco and Martinez a long life.

The video quickly went viral with more than 7.2 million views and was reposted by popular TikTok and Instagram accounts which are dedicated to sharing memes and video game content. This had apparently opened the floodgates for critics.

Thousands of English and Spanish speakers commented that they found the wedding cake topper to be offensive to the bride based on the figurines alone. Other commenters found the joke to be funny, but their supportive words were far and few in between.

COUPLE SHAMED OVER ‘TACKY’ CAKE, CRITICS SAY THEY’LL GET DIVORCED

“While planning the wedding my friends gave me the idea for a cake video game topping, it was all based in fun, so I asked Gerardo if he agreed on that since we wanted to have a very personalized wedding,” Blanco told FOX News. “Gerardo really likes to play video games as a hobby and as the COVID cases started raising, we decided to stay home. He really likes a video game called, ‘Call of Duty.’”

She went on, “We also know that this may not look as good as it is for some people, especially [to girls who] think our marriage might not last because of it, but Gerardo runs his own business a this is a way for him to free himself from work sometimes. I enjoy when he wins and we celebrate those victories together as well as our victories in the real-life”

Blanco and Martinez first met when they attended a party in 2016. They became a couple in February 2017.

“The chemistry we had was really magical,” Blanco recalled. “I was completely amused by him and after four years he asked me to be his wife in a very romantic way with family and friends [present], and of course I accepted.”

Dad builds 500-in-1 classic video game arcade for son during coronavirus lockdown

While abiding by stay-at-home orders around the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, many people have gotten creative with their spare time, including one family that made dinosaur rock art.

One father, however, has gone above and beyond, creating a retro video game arcade for his 3-year-old-son.

Steve Addison, of Lincoln, England, used an old Atari computer, in addition to arcade buttons, wood and a used Raspberry Pi computer he bought from eBay to build the arcade that can play games like “Super Mario,” “Spyro,” “Crash Bandicoot” and “Sonic the Hedgehog,” British news agency SWNS reports.

Steve Addison, who works as an assistant manager at McDonalds, found himself at a loose end after being put on furlough leave. But rather than stew around the house all day, the 32-year-old decided to finish off a plan to dig out an Atari he got as a Christmas gift and create a cabinet so he and three-year-old son Felix could play on it. VIDEO GAMES COULD HELP FIGHT CORONAVIRUS SPREAD, WHO SAYS

“I knew it was inevitable that we were going into lockdown so I made a start just before self-isolation rules fully kicked in,” Addison, 32, said. “I got an Atari from my mother in law for Christmas but I had no slot for it with everything else we have hooked up to the TV.”

Despite having little-to-no knowhow, Addison was able to spend less than $200 for the two-player machine for him and his son, Felix.

John’s wife, Kerry, a NHS mental health nurse, initially had doubts about his epic endeavor.

“I’ve always kind of wanted an arcade machine and I suggested the idea to my wife who kind of laughed me out the room,” Addison explained. “My capabilities of when it came to DIY were little to none so she thought something bad would go wrong, cutting off my finger or something. It got to the start of March and I just wanted a little project to keep my mind focused on something and keep me busy as I knew work would be shut.”

New arcade machines can vary in price but can reach upward of $3,000, based on the price of similar systems.

The father of one was furloughed from his job as an assistant manager at McDonald’s after his restaurant was forced to close due to the pandemic.

Included in the 500 games on the video game arcade machine are classics such as “Pac-Man,” “Pong” and “Tetris,” as well as “Street Fighter” and “Mortal Kombat.”

The emulator does have some educational games for Felix, such as “Sesame Street” and “Winnie the Pooh,” but Steve noted that his son has fallen in love with some of his old favorites.

“Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and Sonic the Hedgehog he loves, which is one of my childhood heroes, so it’s nice to see that my son now enjoys it as well,” Addison said. (Credit: SWNS)

Felix even helped choose some of the characters on the outside of the machine, Addison quipped.

Addison said the project took about two weeks to plan the machine and a week to build it. Since then, he and Felix have enjoyed the labor of love immensely.

“It was a slow process at the start as I was still at work but when we went into a lockdown that’s when I got it all finished off,” he said. “The little man and I have been on [it] pretty much every day since.”

Steve said he’s gotten offers from friends to build a system for them, which he said he’s happy to do.

“When work reopens, I’m going to put it into my staff room for my colleagues to play on their breaks,” he said. “I loved doing it and sharing it with everyone. It was nice to see people’s reactions when it was online and it just made me feel really proud.”

Coronavirus lockdown results in police stopping man from playing ‘Pokémon GO’

Police in the U.K. have stopped a man playing “Pokémon GO” outdoors amid the country’s coronavirus lockdown.

Officers in Stevenage in southern England told the man to go home, explaining that the popular video game does not qualify as essential travel.

“Officers on patrol have stopped a vehicle on the #Stevenge Leisure Park. The driver explained he was in the area playing #PokemonGO,” Stevenage Police tweeted.

‘POKEMON GO’ DEVELOPER MAKES IT EASIER FOR GAMERS TO PLAY INDOORS AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

“Pokemon GO is NOT essential travel and has been directed home under the new legislation,” Stevenage police added.

The man in Stevenage is not the only “Pokémon GO” player to fall foul of police during the pandemic. On March 23, police in Madrid tweeted a ticket that was handed out to a 77-year-old man for playing the game outdoors amid the Spanish coronavirus clampdown.

Hunting “#Pokemon, dinosaurs or any other magical creature is PROHIBITED” during the lockdown, officers explained, in the translated tweet. “Don’t make excuses and #STAYATHOME,” they added.

HOW ‘POKEMON GO’ IS TAKING TECH INTO DANGEROUS, UNCHARTED WATERS

The developers of the “Pokémon GO” game recently made it easier for gamers to play the game indoors amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“The safety of our global player community is our top priority. COVID-19 is challenging us and the world to adjust,” tweeted Niantic Labs on March 12. “We’re putting our focus on expanding features and experiences in our games that can be enjoyed in an individual setting and that also encourage exploration!”

“Pokémon GO” revenue has reportedly spiked during the coronavirus pandemic. Gamesindustry.biz, citing data from SensorTower, reports that the game recently enjoyed its best week for revenue this year.

The augmented reality game lets players “capture” digital creatures at real locations using their smartphones. Digital items that can be used within the game can be found at so-called “PokeStops,” which have often been located at real landmarks.

DEATH BY POKEMON? PUBLIC SAFETY FEARS MOUNT AS ‘POKEMON GO’ CRAZE CONTINUES

In a blog post, Niantic Labs explained that the changes are effective March 12, until further notice. The move will make it easier for gamers to collect “Pokémon GO” monsters without venturing outdoors, according to the Polygon website.

“As part of our commitment to player safety, for the next 30 days, we removed the walking requirement for GO Battle League globally to make it possible for Trainers everywhere to participate,” tweeted Niantic Labs on March 13.

In another blog post on Monday, Niantic Labs highlighted the changes it has made to the “Pokémon GO” GO Battle League. “We reduced the walking requirements for GO Battle League from 3 km to zero and introduced deeply discounted Incense and Poké Balls so people can catch Pokémon without traveling far,” the developer explained.

“Pokémon GO” quickly became a global phenomenon when it was launched in 2016, but also fueled public safety fears amid concerns over distracted pedestrians, dangerous driving and trespassing.

‘Madden 20’ predicts close Kansas City Chiefs victory over 49ers

If “Madden NFL 20” is any indication, the Kansas City Chiefs will win the Super Bowl, beating the San Francisco 49ers in close fashion.

A simulation was run on “Madden 20,” named after the legendary coach and broadcaster, and predicted that the Chiefs would triumph over the 49ers 35-31. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was predicted to win the MVP, throwing for 392 yards, four touchdowns and one interception, according to Forbes.

The video game, which has become a staple of NFL culture as much as the actual games themselves, also predicted that Chiefs TE Travis Kelce would catch 10 passes for 102 yards and one touchdown.

EA, which makes the game, posted a video to YouTube explaining the outcome.

In defeat, 49ers QB Jimmy Garropolo is predicted to throw for 254 yards and two touchdowns, Forbes added.

Since 2004, EA Sports has run a simulation of the game using “Madden,” with mixed success. Of the past 16 games, 10 have been accurately predicted by the simulation, but it has gotten three of the last four games incorrect.

SUPER BOWL UPSET? XBOX BATTLE PREDICTS 49ERS WIN

In 2015, the video game got the winner and the final score right, predicting the Patriots would outlast the Seattle Seahawks 28-24. But in 2016, the game forecast the Carolina Panthers to beat the Denver Broncos, which did not happen.

For 2017, “Madden” again correctly predicted the Patriots would beat the Atlanta Falcons, but in 2018, it forecast a Patriots win over the Philadelphia Eagles, which proved incorrect. In 2019, it predicted the Los Angeles Rams would topple the New England Patriots 30-27.

The Patriots won the game by a score of 13-3.

Super Bowl upset? Xbox battle predicts 49ers win

Going into Super Bowl LIV, the Kansas City Chiefs are a slight favorite over the San Francisco 49ers, but if the Microsoft Xbox battle is any guide, viewers might be in for an upset on Sunday.

San Francisco cornerback Richard Sherman bested Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce 21-16 in “Madden NFL 20” on Xbox One X Live, as the two NFL superstars played in Miami in Tuesday’s Xbox Sessions: Game before the Game episode.

Sherman, who signed with San Francisco in 2018 after spending the entirety of his career in Seattle, won 50 Xbox One X consoles and a copy of the “Madden NFL 20” video game to give to his charity, Blanket Coverage, the Richard Sherman Family Foundation.

When asked if he used the same strategy playing against Kelce as he does on the field, Sherman, 31, said there was some similarity. “On the defensive side you try to contain,” the Pro Bowl cornerback said. “On Sunday, we need to make tackles.”

The Chiefs are a 1.5 point favorite over the 49ers, according to data provided by Fox Bet.

Despite this being his third Super Bowl, Sherman added that this is what every NFL player dreams of. “[The Super Bowl] is the pinnacle and peak of our sport,” he explained. “It’s what everyone dreams of as a kid…it all comes together at the end and you’re thankful for your teammates and coaches.”

Kelce, on the other hand, will be playing in his first Super Bowl and is taking the experience in after the Chiefs fell short last year to the New England Patriots.

SUPER BOWL LIV WILL PUT THE CHIEFS’ SPEED ON FULL DISPLAY

“You have to be a well-rounded team to even get this opportunity…It’s a fun match-up and I know I’m excited to play in the Super Bowl,” the seventh-year tight end out of the University of Cincinnati said.

He added that the game plan on Sunday will be stopping the run and “[getting] the tight ends involved.” During the 2019 regular season, Kelce caught 97 passes for 1,229 yards and 5 touchdowns. In the postseason, he’s added another 13 catches, good for 164 yards and 3 touchdowns.

For Kansas City’s sake, Kelce will need to perform better on the field than he did on the screen on Tuesday.

“The last time I played Madden the Left and Right Trigger were still the Juke buttons,” the affable Kelce quipped.

Texas online gamer saves UK teen who had seizure

A British teen who had a seizure while playing an online game with a Texas woman earlier this month was reportedly saved when his opponent alerted first responders from thousands of miles away.

Aidan Jackson, 17, was talking with Dia Lathora, 20, from his home in Widnes, England, when he began feeling ill, the BBC reported.

Lathora told the Liverpool Echo newspaper she heard what she thought was Jackson having a seizure through her headset and began searching for a number to alert emergency responders, she said.

CALIFORNIA HIKER, 17, SURVIVES BEING STRANDED FOR 30 HOURS IN SNOWY UTAH MOUNTAINS: ‘I SHOULDN’T EVEN BE ALIVE’

“When he didn’t respond I instantly started to look up the emergency number for the EU,” Lathora said. “When that didn’t work I just had to hope the non-emergency would work, it had an option for talking to a real person…and I can’t tell you how quickly I clicked that button.”

Jackson’s parents weren’t aware of what was happening to their son until authorities showed up to the home.

“The next thing we noticed was two police cars outside with flashing lights,” Jackson’s mother, Caroline, told the news outlet. “I assumed they were in the area for another reason and then they ran up to the front door.”

“They said there was an unresponsive male at the address,” she added. “We said we hadn’t called anyone and they said a call had come from America.”

Jackson, who is studying photography and graphics in college, was taken to a hospital, the Echo reported. He had a seizure in May 2019 and was hospitalized for a week.

He is waiting for a doctor’s appointment following the most recent episode. He is reportedly doing well. Seizures are sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbances in the brain that can cause changes in movements, feelings and behavior, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Caroline Jackson thanked Lathora for her getting her son medical attention.

“Dia had our address but didn’t have any contact numbers, so it was amazing she managed to get help from so far away,” she said. “I’ve spoken to her and expressed our thanks — she’s just glad she could help.
