Chicago chaos: Wild video appears to show mob of teens overtaking city streets

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Wild videos posted to social media appear to show mobs of teens and young adults overtaking Chicago streets Wednesday night.

The videos showed large groups of teens running through the streets and even jumping on cars. It was happening in the northern part of the city’s downtown area. At one point, a video of the chaos was taken just blocks from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s mansion, prompting police to stage snow plows to protect the area, according to CWB Chicago.

Chicago police said they responded to a crowd of “youths” which were dispersed from a popular beach. They said no arrests were made and no injures were reported.

A flyer circulated on social media encouraging people to gather at North Avenue Beach on May 11. It advertised a drinking contest, twerk contest and said a camera man would be in attendance. It’s unclear if the flyer is directly connected to the crowd of young people referenced by Chicago police.

Video that appeared to be taken earlier in the day, showed a large crowd of people climbing on top of a city bus. Paul Vallas, former CEO of Chicago Public Schools and Chicago mayoral candidate, shared the video to Twitter.

He wrote, “Tonight downtown is in absolute chaos. Juveniles jumping on top of buses, cars, terrorizing residents, tourists & businesses. These mass groups fought CPD & only minimal arrests were made. Why? Because CPD isn’t allowed to, they have no plan & they didn’t have enough manpower.”

Large crowds of rowdy teenagers and young adults creating chaos has been an issue in Chicago for years. Chicago police have been forced to cancel days off and increase their presence in the city’s downtown area multiple times in the past, Fox 32 reported. The issue appears to escalate as the weather gets warmer in the summer months.

Creepy Apollo 11 Nixon deepfake video created by MIT to show dangers of high-tech misinformation

Scientists at MIT have digitally manipulated video and audio to create a creepy deepfake of President Nixon “delivering” a speech that would have been used in the event of an Apollo 11 disaster.

Written in 1969, the contingency speech was to be used if NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were unable to return from the moon.

The video is part of a project entitled “In Event of Moon Disaster” that aims to highlight the dangers of deepfakes, which use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to create false, but realistic-looking clips.

TERRIFYING HIGH-TECH PORN: CREEPY ‘DEEPFAKE’ VIDEOS ARE ON THE RISE

Doctored videos have been in the spotlight recent years. In 2019, for example, video clips of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, were manipulated to falsely depict her as drunk, sparking outrage.

The deepfake video was created to “show” President Nixon delivering a contingency speech that was to be used in the event of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin becoming stranded on the moon.

“In Event of Moon Disaster” is part of what MIT describes as a “digital storytelling project.” The initiative is the brainchild of MIT’s Center for Advanced Virtuality.

By harnessing AI and machine learning, scientists merged Nixon’s face with the movements of an actor reading the speech that, thankfully, was never delivered. MIT also worked with voice conversion technology specialist Respeecher to produce synthetic speech. AI specialist Canny AI helped replicate the movement of Nixon’s mouth and lips, according to a statement released by MIT.

“Media misinformation is a longstanding phenomenon, but, exacerbated by deepfake technologies and the ease of disseminating content online, it’s become a crucial issue of our time,” said D. Fox Harrell, professor of digital media and of artificial intelligence at MIT and director of the MIT Center for Advanced Virtuality, in the statement.

Maryland police arrest, charge cyclist seen in video confronting youth over George Floyd flyers

Maryland police arrested and charged a man who they say was the bicyclist seen in a viral video confronting a teenage girl who was posting flyers about George Floyd in Bethesda, just outside Washington, D.C.

The suspect, identified as Anthony Brennan III, 60, of Kensington, Md., allegedly forcibly grabbed flyers from the hands of the teen, who was among a group posting the flyers along the Capital Crescent Trail around 12:45 p.m. Monday, FOX 5 of Washington reported.

Police say the suspect also pushed his bike toward a male member of the group, causing him to fall to the ground.

After being located by authorites, Brennan turned himself in Friday evening and is now facing assault charges, according to FOX 5.

MARYLAND COPS SEEK CYCLIST THEY SAY ASSAULTED TEEN POSTING FLYERS PROTESTING GEORGE FLOYD DEATH IN VIRAL VIDEO

The 30-second video was shot by a teenage boy who was a friend of the girl and was given to Maryland-National Capital Park Police. They then released photos of the suspect and said he was wanted for assault. The video had been seen more than 19 million times.

Early Friday, police posted a tweet thanking the community for its support. “Keep the tips coming and we will follow up,” the tweet said.

Police say members of the community sent hundreds of tips to police this week.

“Contact was made with Mr. Brennan and his legal counsel earlier today. Consent was provided to search his home while members of the State’s Attorney’s Office and Park Police were present. Items of evidentiary value were seized. A subsequent arrest warrant was obtained and served on Mr. Brennan this evening after he voluntarily turned himself into detectives,” police said in a statement.

Brennan was charged with three counts of second-degree assault.

The boy and the girl were posting flyers on the bike trail that said, “A man was lynched by police, What are you doing about it?” according to Fox 5 DC. They were with a third teen, another girl.

In the video, the girl, who cops say was attacked, is heard screaming “Get away from me!” as the man grabs her flyers.

The boy is heard saying, “Hey, leave her alone.”
