Carson Wentz: Colts owner Jim Isray’s criticism ‘came out of left field’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz finally spoke out this week in response to Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Isray’s comments in March about the Colts’ decision to trade for Wentz last year being “a mistake.”

During an appearance Tuesday on “The Colin Cowherd Podcast,” Wentz revealed he had a very different understanding of his time in Indianapolis and called his dismissal from the Colts a move “out of left field.”

“I mean, it is what it is, you know. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion,” Wentz said of Isray. “I thought last year was a really fun year. I thought we did some incredible things, came up short at the end. Obviously, I struggled down the stretch there and timing was poor. But yeah, I didn’t expect that.”

CARSON WENTZ STARTING FOR COMMANDERS ‘IS PROBABLY HIS LAST OPPORTUNITY,’ TROY AIKMAN SAYS

Wentz added that he felt “things were in a pretty good place” at the end of the season despite the Colts missing the playoffs. He also spoke fondly of the relationships he built last year, which prompted his surprise at being traded to Washington.

“Yeah, it kinda came out of left field, you know? He’s entitled to his own opinion, and he’s entitled to do what he wants with his football team,” Wentz said.

Isray expressed his frustration with Wentz during the NFL owners’ meeting, when Irsay also took a jab at the Jacksonville Jaguars in reference to the Colts’ Week 18 loss to the Jags.

“I think the worst thing you can do is have a mistake and try to keep living with it going forward,” Irsay said in reference to Wentz. “For us, it was something we had to move away from as a franchise. It was very obvious.

“No disrespect to Jacksonville, but I mean, they’re the worst team in the league. You play well and hard for the first quarter or so, and they’re looking to go to their locker room and clean it out. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.”

Isray explained that by moving on from Wentz, he felt that the organization “corrected” the matter.

Wentz will likely take over the starting role in Washington, where he will have a chance to redeem himself in Week 1 when the Commanders take on the Jaguars. The Colts added veteran QB Matt Ryan to their roster.

Fox News’ Ryan Gaydos contributed to this report.

Carson Wentz starting for Commanders ‘is probably his last opportunity,’ Troy Aikman says

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Carson Wentz’s 2022 season with the Washington Commanders could be his last chance as a starting quarterback in the NFL, former Dallas Cowboys star Troy Aikman said Monday.

Aikman made the remarks on an ESPN conference call. He will be in the “Monday Night Football” booth this season.

“This is probably his last opportunity, just being blunt about it, to prove that he can be a franchise quarterback in the NFL,” the three-time Super Bowl winner said, via NFL.com.

“I think that right now, Carson had an opportunity; it didn’t end well in Philadelphia, of course. He then got traded to Indianapolis. Didn’t go great for him there. They decided to make another change at that position, and now he’s landed in Washington.”

EX-GIANTS STAR JAMES BRADBERRY SIGNS WITH NFC EAST RIVAL

Wentz will likely be the starter when the Commanders take the field on Sept. 11 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. A good start for Wentz would be to soundly defeat the Jaguars, something he and the Indianapolis Colts couldn’t do in Week 18 last season, which kept the team out of the playoffs.

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Wentz No. 2 overall in 2016. He was a Pro Bowler in his second season but has appeared in all 16 or 17 games three times in his career.

Last season, Wentz had 3,563 passing yards, 27 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. Strangely, Wentz had thrown seven interceptions four times.

Behind Taylor Heinicke, the Commanders were ranked 23rd in points scored and 21st in yards gained. Wentz should be able to pack a punch for Washington, especially as the Commanders have one of the easiest schedules for the 2022 season.

NFL schedule 2022: 3 teams with the easiest matchups

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The NFL schedule is never easy for any team but there are at least three organizations that will have it a bit easier than most going into the 2022 season.

The schedules for each of the NFL’s 32 teams were revealed on Thursday night. The Los Angeles Rams, Arizona Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals were determined to have the toughest roads ahead.

There are three teams whose combined opponents have a winning percentage of around 46%. All of those teams play in the NFC East. Even the New York Giants are among the teams that have a favorable schedule heading into the 2022 season.

    NFL SCHEDULE 2022: EACH TEAM’S WEEK-BY-WEEK OPPONENTS

Read below for the three teams that have the easiest dockets.

    –

    Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys will start the season with a few tough matchups – Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Bengals and Rams all face Dallas within the first five weeks of the season. But it gets a bit easier from there. The Giants and Commanders are in between with games against NFC North opponents also listed on the team’s schedule.

Their opponents have a combined winning percentage of .462.

Washington could get off to a good start with a Week 1 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The team then has the Detroit Lions in Week 2. It could be enough to get the ball rolling for them. Washington has NFC North and AFC South opponents in their schedule this season and could have a bunch of wins that could keep them in the race for a division title.

Their opponents have a combined winning percentage of .462.

    Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles were 9-8 and lost in the wild card game last season. Philadelphia will have the Lions, Jaguars and Houston Texans within the first nine games of the season as well as two NFC East games. Philadelphia could very well get back to the playoffs with the teams on their schedule.

Their opponents have a combined winning percentage of .464.

    NFL schedule 2022: Each team’s week-by-week opponents

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The NFL released each team’s schedule for the 2022 season Thursday night.

Some matchups had already been announced prior to the full reveal, including the Green Bay Packers facing the Dallas Cowboys in Week 10. That game was announced on “Fox & Friends” earlier this week.

A handful of international games and a Week 2 “Monday Night Football” doubleheader had also been announced.

Each team’s full schedule is detailed blow.

Commanders rookie Sam Howell’s eating habits resurface, raise eyebrows on social media

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Sam Howell has his quirks just like every other professional athlete.

The Commanders’ fifth-round draft pick out of North Carolina has never eaten steak or a burger. That information went viral on social media after an interview the former Tar Heel did in 2020 with WTVD-TV.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

According to the station, Howell told them in December 2020 “he won’t get anywhere near seafood and claims to have never had a bite of steak or even so much as a hamburger.”

Howell did admit once eating a hot dog but he’s partial to chicken.

Howell again mentioned never eating steak Tuesday in a video for the Commanders.

Twitter users voiced opinions about Howell’s eating habits.

Howell will likely enter training camp as a backup to Carson Wentz, who Washington acquired in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts in the offseason.

The North Carolina standout was the team’s starting quarterback for three seasons. He compiled 10,283 passing yards and 92 touchdown passes over the three years.

NFL starting quarterbacks for nearly dozen teams are pray-they-perform guys

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The dominant story of this NFL offseason, at least before the salaries for receivers exploded and basically forced some to be traded, was the influx of outstanding quarterbacks to new teams which turned Super Bowl dreams in Denver, Cleveland, and perhaps Indianapolis, into tangible 2022 season goals.

But there’s another story which affects more teams and that’s going mostly ignored. Consider how many teams, seeing ample evidence their veteran quarterback is not elite, are staying with that guy.

    They’re letting it ride.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

FILE – Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock (3) passes against the Kansas City Chiefs during the first half of an NFL football game Jan. 8, 2022, in Denver. They may or may not have tried to upgrade but ultimately decided that surrounding the same guy who hasn’t been good enough with more talent was their best approach to making the guy, well, good enough.

Team after NFL team is facing this scenario for 2022 because the avenues for improving now are quite barren — with more trades unlikely and no other draft promising young talent for another year.

So these teams are going to ride or die with their guys — even though their guys haven’t proven on the field they definitely deserve the confidence.

Consider the Philadelphia Eagles, for example. They’re one of these teams.

Despite owning plenty of draft capital in multiple drafts, the Eagles decided they were going to hope incumbent starter Jalen Hurts could develop into a star.

The Eagles did everything they could to upgrade their roster in free agency and even traded away a first-round pick for Tennessee Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Brown. They did everything they could to maximize the draft with good picks Jordan Davis, Cameron Jurgens and Nakobe Dean the first three rounds of the draft.

And now it’s up to Hurts to prove himself.

“It’s understood. It’s my opportunity, it’s my team,” Hurts said this week when asked about the obvious support general manager Howie Roseman showed in not replacing him. “It’s my team, so we’re ready to go.”

That’s a lot of confidence in a quarterback who has thrown 22 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

But the Eagles have a fallback position. Like many other teams that are basically gambling on improvement from a starting quarterback that desperately needs to get better to stick around beyond next season, the Eagles have a fallback plan for 2023.

They have two first-round draft picks lined up for the ’23 draft that they can use in whatever manner they decide, including by conducting a quarterback search next offseason.

Multiple teams in the uncertain-but-praying-for-a-miracle quarterback situation have fallback positions that might also lead them to having new quarterbacks in 2023.

Here are the teams and their positions:

Miami Dolphins: QB — Tua Tagovailoa. Situation — Tua hasn’t been good enough in either of his first two years while fellow 2020 first-round picks Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert have been outstanding. The hope is a coaching change and the overhaul of the offense at both offensive line and receiver position will lead to a new and amazing Tua being unveiled. The fallback — The Dolphins have more than most teams. They have two first-round draft picks in the ’23 draft, and they have the muscle memory of chasing Tom Brady to be their quarterback the last couple of years. And next year Brady is a free agent.

Pittsburgh Steelers: QB: Mitchell Trubisky. Situation — Ben Roethlisberger has retired so Trubisky was signed to what is basically a one-year, prove-it deal. If he plays well, the Steelers have him under contract for ’23 but if not, they can cut him and save $8 million in cap space. It’s a gamble on a former No. 2 overall pick who washed out in Chicago. The fallback — The Steelers selected Kenny Pickett in the first round of the draft last week.

Tennessee Titans: QB — Ryan Tannehill. Situation — Tannehill has not been a good playoff quarterback and last year’s 3-interception game was especially egregious. The Titans sniffed around on trying to trade for Aaron Rodgers but were quickly rebuffed. If Tannehill doesn’t play up to his $38.6 million salary cap charge, this will likely be his final year with the team. The fallback — The Titans selected Malik Willis in the third round of the draft last week.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones throws under pressure during the first half of an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021, in East Rutherford, N.J. (AP Photo/Corey Sipkin)

Houston Texans: QB — Davis Mills. Situation — Mills is only in his second year which suggests he deserves more time, especially considering the fact he was good in four of the final five games he played. But he’s a rough spot because the Texans have been losing for a while now and need results from everyone — including him. So he needs to deliver some to keep his job. The fallback: The Texans have two first round picks in the 2023 draft.

Washington Commanders: QB — Carson Wentz. Situation — Washington has been digging through the QB trash of other teams hoping to find a treasure and Wentz is the latest guy the club has pulled out of the bin. Wentz has washed out in Philly and Indy and probably doesn’t get a leash that extends beyond 2022 unless he plays well. The fallback: The Commanders selected Sam Howell in the fifth round of the draft but who knows?

New York Giants: QB — Daniel Jones. Situation — He’s got a new coach and new GM and they’re saying they’re confident in Jones but they’re not showing that confidence because they declined to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. So it’s likely put up or bye-bye for Jones. The fallback — The Giants are one of only two teams on this list without an obvious fallback plan if their QB doesn’t perform.

Detroit Lions: QB — Jared Goff. Situation — It looked bad for Goff and the Lions that a trade that sent Goff to Detroit and Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams resulted in the Rams winning the Super Bowl. So Goff, not good enough last year, has to play to a higher standard because the Lions can save up to $26 million in cap space in 2023 by cutting him. The fallback — The Lions have two first-round draft picks in 2023.

Atlanta Falcons: QB — Marcus Mariota. Situation — They traded Matt Ryan and signed Mariota, who washed out in Tennessee and was a backup in Las Vegas. It’s a big opportunity for Mariota to play for Arthur Smith, his former Tennessee offensive coordinator. But if he plays as he did in Tennessee that won’t be good enough. The fallback — No obvious path to an upgrade.

Carolina Panthers: QB — Sam Darnold. Situation — He washed out with the New York Jets and was a disappointment in Carolina last season. The Panthers tried to find a replacement by trading for Deshaun Watson but he didn’t want to come. So if Darnold doesn’t make it work now both he and coach Matt Rhule could be out. The fallback — The Panthers selected Matt Corral in the third round of the draft.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Seattle Seahawks: QB — Drew Lock. Situation — They traded or were forced to trade (depending on whom you believe) Russell Wilson to Denver and that ended a fine era in team history. They got Lock as part of that trade but tried to get into the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes. He wasn’t interested. Lock has 25 TDs and 20 interceptions in three seasons, so he needs to stop turning the ball over or this is probably his final chance to be an NFL starter. The fallback — The Seahawks have two first-round and two second-round picks in next year’s draft.

Dwayne Haskins honored at NFL Draft with moment of silence

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The NFL Draft started with a moment of silence for Dwayne Haskins Thursday night, just weeks after the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback was killed after being struck on a Florida highway.

Haskins, who would have turned 25 Tuesday, was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 on foot when he was hit by a dump truck around 6:37 a.m. April 9, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

He was pronounced dead on the highway.

“Earlier this month, former Ohio State, Washington Commanders and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins tragically lost his life. Please join us in a moment of silence as we honor his memory,” the NFL announced as an image of Haskins was displayed on the big screen for the thousands of NFL fans in attendance.

Virginia AG opens probe into Washington Commanders’ alleged financial misconduct

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares confirmed this week that his office is investigating alleged financial misconduct by the Washington Commanders after a congressional committee raised the issue with the Federal Trade Commission earlier this month.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform made the allegations in a letter on April 12, saying that “senior executives and the team’s owner, Daniel Snyder, may have engaged in a troubling, long-running, and potentially unlawful pattern of financial conduct that victimized thousands of team fans and the National Football League.”

Miyares told a team lawyer in a letter on Monday that he has “not prejudged the issues” and feels it is his “responsibility to carefully examine the material facts regarding this matter.”

The congressional committee’s investigation leans partly on the testimony of Jason Friedman, a former VP of sales and customer service for the Washington Commanders, and other former employees.

COMMANDERS HELD BACK REVENUE OWED TO VISITING TEAMS: REPORT

One former executive alleged that the team exploited the league’s revenue-sharing practices by keeping “two sets of books,” one with the full accounting and one with underreported revenue numbers.

The committee also found that the team may have withheld refundable security deposits on multi-year seat leases, according to the report.

The Washington Commanders have denied any wrongdoing and said the investigation isn’t warranted.

“The committee did not request a single document from the team; the committee did not invite a single representative of the team to address the truth of the matters contained in the committee’s letter; and the committee did not pose questions to the team to answer in writing about its allegations, or provide any mechanism whatsoever for the team to address the truth of the allegations,” Jordan W. Siev, a lawyer for the Commanders, wrote in a letter earlier this month.”

Commanders deny financial misconduct allegations, lawyer says team can rebut claims

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Washington Commanders denied allegations of financial impropriety in a letter sent to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday.

Last week, the U.S. House Oversight Committee wrote in a letter to the FTC claiming that the Commanders may have engaged in potentially unlawful financial conduct for more than 10 years. The team was accused of withholding ticket revenue from visiting teams and refundable deposits from fans. In a 20-page letter obtained by Fox News Digital, congressional leaders said they appeared to have uncovered information indicating that the organization, including team owner Daniel Snyder, may have been involved in “troubling” financial misconduct and withheld millions from the NFL.

On Monday, the Commanders dismissed the allegations in their 19-page response. The letter included testimony, emails and other documents. The letter, signed by Jordan W. Siev from the law firm Reed Smith, denies all of those allegations. Siev wrote that the committee never requested information about the allegations made and that no financial investigation was warranted.

“The committee did not request a single document from the team; the committee did not invite a single representative of the team to address the truth of the matters contained in the committee’s letter; and the committee did not pose questions to the team to answer in writing about its allegations, or provide any mechanism whatsoever for the team to address the truth of the allegations,” the letter read. “Had the committee posed any of these questions or requests to the team, the team could — and would — easily and fully have rebutted each allegation.”

The letter also takes aim at the motives and character of the former VP of sales and customer service Jason Friedman. His testimony against the organization kickstarted the congressional lawmakers’ letter to the FTC over the fiduciary allegations.

Congress had already started an investigation into the organization’s workplace culture. The NFL didn’t release a report detailing the findings of the investigation into the matter. Snyder and the team were fined $10 million, but no other disciplinary steps were taken.

Friedman’s attorney, Lisa Banks, said in a statement her client “testified truthfully, with evidence.”

The lawmakers, in last week’s letter to the FTC, cited testimony from Friedman, who claimed the team had kept two separate financial books — one with the underreported ticket revenue that went to the NFL and another with the full picture. The employee said Snyder was aware of the situation.

Washington’s former director of finance, Paul Szczenski, denied the allegations in their response letter.

“I can state unequivocally that I never helped maintain, or saw anyone else maintain, a ‘second set’ of books,” the letter read.

Washington said in a statement to the Associated Press on April 4 there was “absolutely no withholding of ticket revenue at any time” and pointed to audits by multiple parties, adding that “anyone who offered testimony suggesting a withholding of revenue has committed perjury, plain and simple.”

Witness believes he saw Dwayne Haskins on I-595 moments before his death

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Several questions remain about the tragic death of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins. One witness who believes he saw the NFL player moments before he was struck and killed by a Mack truck described the situation as “disturbing.”

Haskins, who would’ve turned 25 on May 3, was attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 on foot when he was struck by a truck early Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

While it remains unclear what Haskins was doing on the interstate, a man driving in the area said he saw vehicles turning into his lane to avoid a person he believes was Haskins.

“I was dropping off my daughter to an airline at the Fort Lauderdale Airport in the morning,” Chris Stanley told WTVJ on Sunday. “And what I noticed was a Mack truck, or a big tractor-trailer, with also another vehicle that started moving a little bit to the left. I was in the left lane and then there was the right lane. And then I noticed an individual there starting to make their way onto the road.

“He was about halfway, to a quarter way in the right lane, already onto the highway, and I was already concerned that somebody was going to strike him right there at that moment.”

Stanley said he could not figure out what the man was doing on the highway.

“That’s why it’s just very disturbing,” he said. “I just didn’t understand the situation.”

Law enforcement officials have not revealed any details about Haskins’ death, citing an ongoing investigation.

“My husband was more than a great football player. He had the smile of a rainbow that touched the diversity of so many,” the statement said. “He will forever rest and remain in our hearts till the end of time. His eternal love will always reside with us, Ohio State, Washington Commanders and Steelers Nation for eternity!”
