Falcons’ decision to choose Desmond Ridder over Malik Willis came down to ‘signature moments’: report

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Atlanta Falcons stunned the NFL world when they selected quarterback Desmond Ridder in the third round of the draft over Malik Willis and Matt Corral.

Ridder’s winning moments at Cincinnati appeared to be defining factor in the selection for the Falcons, ESPN reported Monday. Ridder led the Bearcats to the College Football Playoff – the first time a team outside the Power 5 Conferences made the sport’s premier event.

“… Atlanta felt Malik Willis, despite immense talent, lacked the signature moments while at Liberty to sway such a decision, whereas Desmond Ridder – the team’s pick at No. 74 – showcased a more complete body of work,” the report said.

Ridder had 3,334 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes in his final season with the Bearcats. All were career highs in those categories.

Atlanta is in need of a starting quarterback after trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts in the offseason. The Falcons were reportedly close to acquiring Deshaun Watson before the Cleveland Browns swooped in at the last minute to trade for him. The turn of events triggered Ryan’s trade to Indy.

The Falcons signed Marcus Mariota in the offseason. He had been a backup to Derek Carr with the Las Vegas Raiders for the last few seasons. Mariota was a former No. 2 pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2015. He hasn’t started a game since the 2019 season.

Willis proved in college he can throw the ball and run with it if needed. He had 2,857 passing yards and 27 touchdown passes in his final year at Liberty. He also ran the ball for 878 yards on 197 carries and scored 13 touchdowns on the ground.

With the No. 86 pick, the Tennessee Titans selected Willis. The Titans acquired the pick from the Las Vegas Raiders.

NFL starting quarterbacks for nearly dozen teams are pray-they-perform guys

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The dominant story of this NFL offseason, at least before the salaries for receivers exploded and basically forced some to be traded, was the influx of outstanding quarterbacks to new teams which turned Super Bowl dreams in Denver, Cleveland, and perhaps Indianapolis, into tangible 2022 season goals.

But there’s another story which affects more teams and that’s going mostly ignored. Consider how many teams, seeing ample evidence their veteran quarterback is not elite, are staying with that guy.

    They’re letting it ride.

They may or may not have tried to upgrade but ultimately decided that surrounding the same guy who hasn’t been good enough with more talent was their best approach to making the guy, well, good enough.

Team after NFL team is facing this scenario for 2022 because the avenues for improving now are quite barren — with more trades unlikely and no other draft promising young talent for another year.

So these teams are going to ride or die with their guys — even though their guys haven’t proven on the field they definitely deserve the confidence.

Consider the Philadelphia Eagles, for example. They’re one of these teams.

Despite owning plenty of draft capital in multiple drafts, the Eagles decided they were going to hope incumbent starter Jalen Hurts could develop into a star.

The Eagles did everything they could to upgrade their roster in free agency and even traded away a first-round pick for Tennessee Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Brown. They did everything they could to maximize the draft with good picks Jordan Davis, Cameron Jurgens and Nakobe Dean the first three rounds of the draft.

And now it’s up to Hurts to prove himself.

“It’s understood. It’s my opportunity, it’s my team,” Hurts said this week when asked about the obvious support general manager Howie Roseman showed in not replacing him. “It’s my team, so we’re ready to go.”

That’s a lot of confidence in a quarterback who has thrown 22 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

But the Eagles have a fallback position. Like many other teams that are basically gambling on improvement from a starting quarterback that desperately needs to get better to stick around beyond next season, the Eagles have a fallback plan for 2023.

They have two first-round draft picks lined up for the ’23 draft that they can use in whatever manner they decide, including by conducting a quarterback search next offseason.

Multiple teams in the uncertain-but-praying-for-a-miracle quarterback situation have fallback positions that might also lead them to having new quarterbacks in 2023.

Here are the teams and their positions:

Miami Dolphins: QB — Tua Tagovailoa. Situation — Tua hasn’t been good enough in either of his first two years while fellow 2020 first-round picks Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert have been outstanding. The hope is a coaching change and the overhaul of the offense at both offensive line and receiver position will lead to a new and amazing Tua being unveiled. The fallback — The Dolphins have more than most teams. They have two first-round draft picks in the ’23 draft, and they have the muscle memory of chasing Tom Brady to be their quarterback the last couple of years. And next year Brady is a free agent.

Pittsburgh Steelers: QB: Mitchell Trubisky. Situation — Ben Roethlisberger has retired so Trubisky was signed to what is basically a one-year, prove-it deal. If he plays well, the Steelers have him under contract for ’23 but if not, they can cut him and save $8 million in cap space. It’s a gamble on a former No. 2 overall pick who washed out in Chicago. The fallback — The Steelers selected Kenny Pickett in the first round of the draft last week.

Tennessee Titans: QB — Ryan Tannehill. Situation — Tannehill has not been a good playoff quarterback and last year’s 3-interception game was especially egregious. The Titans sniffed around on trying to trade for Aaron Rodgers but were quickly rebuffed. If Tannehill doesn’t play up to his $38.6 million salary cap charge, this will likely be his final year with the team. The fallback — The Titans selected Malik Willis in the third round of the draft last week.

Houston Texans: QB — Davis Mills. Situation — Mills is only in his second year which suggests he deserves more time, especially considering the fact he was good in four of the final five games he played. But he’s a rough spot because the Texans have been losing for a while now and need results from everyone — including him. So he needs to deliver some to keep his job. The fallback: The Texans have two first round picks in the 2023 draft.

Washington Commanders: QB — Carson Wentz. Situation — Washington has been digging through the QB trash of other teams hoping to find a treasure and Wentz is the latest guy the club has pulled out of the bin. Wentz has washed out in Philly and Indy and probably doesn’t get a leash that extends beyond 2022 unless he plays well. The fallback: The Commanders selected Sam Howell in the fifth round of the draft but who knows?

New York Giants: QB — Daniel Jones. Situation — He’s got a new coach and new GM and they’re saying they’re confident in Jones but they’re not showing that confidence because they declined to exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. So it’s likely put up or bye-bye for Jones. The fallback — The Giants are one of only two teams on this list without an obvious fallback plan if their QB doesn’t perform.

Detroit Lions: QB — Jared Goff. Situation — It looked bad for Goff and the Lions that a trade that sent Goff to Detroit and Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams resulted in the Rams winning the Super Bowl. So Goff, not good enough last year, has to play to a higher standard because the Lions can save up to $26 million in cap space in 2023 by cutting him. The fallback — The Lions have two first-round draft picks in 2023.

Atlanta Falcons: QB — Marcus Mariota. Situation — They traded Matt Ryan and signed Mariota, who washed out in Tennessee and was a backup in Las Vegas. It’s a big opportunity for Mariota to play for Arthur Smith, his former Tennessee offensive coordinator. But if he plays as he did in Tennessee that won’t be good enough. The fallback — No obvious path to an upgrade.

Carolina Panthers: QB — Sam Darnold. Situation — He washed out with the New York Jets and was a disappointment in Carolina last season. The Panthers tried to find a replacement by trading for Deshaun Watson but he didn’t want to come. So if Darnold doesn’t make it work now both he and coach Matt Rhule could be out. The fallback — The Panthers selected Matt Corral in the third round of the draft.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Seattle Seahawks: QB — Drew Lock. Situation — They traded or were forced to trade (depending on whom you believe) Russell Wilson to Denver and that ended a fine era in team history. They got Lock as part of that trade but tried to get into the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes. He wasn’t interested. Lock has 25 TDs and 20 interceptions in three seasons, so he needs to stop turning the ball over or this is probably his final chance to be an NFL starter. The fallback — The Seahawks have two first-round and two second-round picks in next year’s draft.

Matt Ryan says he’d likely still be with Falcons if it weren’t for pursuit of Deshaun Watson

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan would likely still be with the Atlanta Falcons had the team not tried to trade for Deshaun Watson.

“Pretty good chance,” Ryan said on the Ryen Russillo podcast.

Instead, Ryan was traded to the Indianapolis Colts, and Watson was traded from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns. And now, Atlanta has neither.

Ryan said the Falcons informed him they were looking to trade for Watson. And that was about the time he decided he should be elsewhere for the start of next season.

MATT RYAN EXPLAINS FALCONS EXIT, SAYS COLTS WERE FIRST OPTION HE EXPLORED

“When free agency starts to pick up and they start to look into what they want to do, I kind of got filled into the loop that they were going to look into Deshaun Watson,” Ryan said. “And then at that point, I said, OK, I understand. But I also need to look into what I need to look into. And if this doesn’t go down, find out if this is probably still the best fit for me.”

Ryan, 36, has only played for the Falcons since entering the NFL in 2008.

He has started all 222 games in which he’s appeared. That includes all 17 last season and all 16 the year before that.

He also of course led the Falcons to Super Bowl LI in 2016, when they blew a 28-3 lead to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

NFL Draft 2022: Falcons select Desmond Ridder in shocking quarterback selection

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Atlanta Falcons selected quarterback Desmond Ridder in the third round with the No. 74 pick overall and was the first quarterback taken on the second day of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Falcons’ selection of Ridder was one of the biggest shockers on Day 2 of the draft. Experts expected Malik Willis to go in the first round but has dropped far down.

Ridder had 3,334 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes in his final season with the Bearcats. All were career-highs in those categories.

NFL Draft 2022: Ex-coach June Jones breaks down QB class, reveals who he likes the most

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

LAS VEGAS – Former NFL coach June Jones was spot on last year when he predicted Mac Jones would have immense success in his rookie season. He would lead the New England Patriots to a playoff appearance.

Jones, the former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons and interim coach of the San Diego Chargers, told Fox News Digital in a recent interview he thinks most of the quarterbacks in this year’s class are “wait-and-see” type players. He said out of everyone, Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett was the one he liked the most.

“I think they’re all gonna be wait-and-see guys. I do think (Kenny Pickett) if he goes to the right team, I think he possibly could be (a starter),” Jones said. “I’m not high on (Sam Howell) from North Carolina. But Pickett I think has enough throwing ability and has been in a passing offense. … I think he may be able to jump up in there and get a chance anyway to play early.”

Jones said he even was a bit interested to see how Ole Miss prospect Matt Corral was going to do. But while most experts have predicted he goes in the first round, Jones said he’d be surprised if that happened.

“The guy that I kinda like a lot and everybody is kind of now negative on is the Ole Miss guy, Matt Corral. I have to admit now they’re worried about things that don’t happen on the field. They’re talking about off-field, ‘Oh, maybe he’s in the clubs a little too much’ or whatever. But some of the best quarterbacks were in the clubs too much,” Jones said.

Malik Willis, out of Liberty, was another quarterback who NFL analysts had been interested in.

However, Jones sees him as a “project.”

“The guy that everybody is talking about, Malik Willis, I think is a project and I would be hard-pressed if I was somebody who is not real secure in my job to take him because he’s gonna be forced into playing. I think he’s a project,” Jones told Fox News Digital, adding he still thought Willis gets taken in the first round.

Jones expressed interest in Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe. The former Hilltoppers star will likely fall to the second or third day.

“I think there’s a couple down the line guys. The kid from Western Kentucky (Bailey Zappe), I think he’s the best guy. I think if he was 6-foot-3, he would probably be listed that way because he’s a better passer than all of them,” Jones said. “Athletically, he’s good enough to move around and create some stuff, too. But I really liked his accuracy down the field. He’s more accurate. I read some comments about him that some guys question his accuracy. Well, if you watched the film, there’s no question this guy can throw.

“I kind of feel like how I felt about Mac Jones last year when nobody really thought he was the guy. Then all of a sudden everybody went back and reevaluated and found out he was one of those guys and New England was kinda lucky to get him.”

Jones hasn’t coached in the NFL since the 1998 season with the Chargers. He had successful runs in college with Hawaii and SMU and recently was the head coach of the Houston Roughnecks of the XFL in 2020 before the league shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

EX-PACKERS FIRST-ROUND PICK DARRELL THOMPSON ON HIS NFL DRAFT EXPERIENCE: ‘IT’S YOUR CHILDHOOD DREAM’

Jones said the feedback has been “pretty unbelievable” and he’s gotten calls about his courses from coaches at all levels.

Julio Jones had ‘no clue’ he was on TV for infamous Shannon Sharpe interview

Was Julio Jones conned into revealing his trade wish on live TV? One NFL insider says so.

“I have it on good authority that Jones had no clue that he was on national TV when he said to FS1’s Shannon Sharpe, ‘I’m outta there’ two weeks ago, which led to his trade request becoming public,” Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported on Monday.

The controversial call took place on the May 24 episode of “Undisputed,” and reportedly angered the Falcons front office. It was the first time Jones publicly said that he wanted out of Atlanta.

Earlier on Monday, Jones arrived in Tennessee via private jet following his trade from the Falcons on Sunday.

To acquire the 32-year-old wide receiver, the Titans sent a 2022 second-round draft pick and a 2023 fourth-round selection to the Falcons. In addition to Jones, Atlanta also gave up a 2023 sixth-round pick.

The blockbuster deal is still pending a physical, according to the Titans.

At the time of the interview, many speculated as to whether or not Jones knew he was on television. Sharpe called him out of the blue and didn’t explicitly tell him he was on TV until after his admission – though he said he wasn’t going to the Cowboys once he was clued in.

It came out not long after the call that Jones had requested a trade weeks earlier, and a deal to Tennessee was finalized over the weekend.

Leading up to the trade, multiple reports claimed New England, Seattle and Baltimore expressed interest in Jones. Yet no other team was willing to give up what Tennessee did to acquire the seven-time Pro Bowler, according to NBC Sports.

When it came down to negotiations, the Titans were reportedly the only team serious about taking on the remainder of Jones’ three-year, $38 million contract.

Tennessee solidified the deal by adding an additional pick during a Sunday morning call between Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot and Titans GM Jon Robinson, NBC Sports reported.

Robinson told reporters Sunday that the Titans will be restructuring contracts to fit Jones’ contract under their salary cap. He added that both the team and Jones are mutually excited to get to work.

“I just talked to Julio an hour ago, and he’s fired up to get here and start working with his new guys,” Robinson said.

“He gives us real multiplicity on offense. We’re high on [free-agent wideout] Josh Reynolds too, and imagine Julio, A.J. Brown and Josh Reynolds in the pattern, with Derrick Henry in the backfield. You pack the box for Derrick and, I mean, someone’s gonna be open for Ryan [Tannehill] to hit.”

Julio Jones says he’s ‘out’ of Atlanta during call with Shannon Sharpe on live TV

As trade rumors continue to swirl around Julio Jones leaving the Falcons, the former All-Pro wide receiver all but solidified that he won’t be playing in Atlanta when the 2021 NFL season kicks off.

During Monday’s “Undisputed” on FOX Sports, Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe called Jones during the live broadcast and asked him about his future with the Falcons, and if he would potentially join the Dallas Cowboys.

“Oh man, no, I’m out of there, man,” Jones responded to Sharpe during the live broadcast.

Sharpe followed up, asking him where he would like to play.

“I want to win,” Jones fired back.

Following the appearance on “Undisputed,” NFL Network provided some clarity on the situation, confirming that Jones requested a trade from the Falcons a few months ago and the team agreed to listen to offers.

ESPN followed with a report that Atlanta is seeking a first-round draft pick in exchange for Jones. However, people around the league don’t believe the Falcons will get that kind of compensation for him, according to the report.

A recent report surfaced from NBC Sports Boston that Jones wants to join the New England Patriots and play with quarterback Cam Newton.

Last season, Jones only played in nine games due to injuries. He hauled in 51 receptions for 771 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Jones, a seven-time Pro Bowler, has led the league in receiving in 2015 and 2018, and when healthy, he continues to be one of the best players at his position.

Ex-college football star says he’s victim of Falcons minicamp hoax: ‘Thought it was a legit opportunity’

Juantarius Bryant did not hear his name called during the three-day NFL Draft earlier this month and was among those free-agent rookies trying to latch onto a team for the summer with hopes of making the starting roster come fall.

However, the former Austin Peay defensive back revealed Saturday he was the victim of a hoax. He said someone posed as Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Dean Pees and invited him to rookie minicamp during the week. The offer was too good to be true.

“I did not realize it was not a legit opportunity until I traveled to the facility for rookie minicamp check in on Wednesday, May 12. It’s most definitely one of the most embarrassing things that has ever happened to me and a very humbling experience,” Bryant said. “Just want to apologize to everyone in the Atlanta Falcons organization for the mix-up. I honestly thought it was a legit opportunity on my end.

“I do not know or understand why this happened, but I do know that everything happens for a reason. Yes, this was heartbreaking for me, but just another stepping stone that I am not afraid to admit or overcome. At the end of the day, this will not make or break me. I will still continue to fight for my dreams because I know it’s what I really want. I’m still striving and still in the best shape of my live. When the opportunity presents itself, I will be ready.”

PATRIOTS OWNER ROBERT KRAFT ON TOM BRADY REUNION: ‘HE DID SO MUCH FOR US’

The Falcons have not commented on the alleged hoax.

Bryant was initially a walk-on player at Austin Peay and was redshirted his freshman year.

He turned his career around and managed to make the First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference team in 2019. He had 242 tackles, eight passes defended, three forced fumbles and an interception in 43 career games with the Governors.
