Jay Wright admits NBA could be in his future

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Now that he’s graduated from the college game, Jay Wright could be headed to the pros.

Less than a week after retiring from Villanova because of what he deemed as no longer having “the edge,” Wright admitted that should the NBA come calling, he’d listen. Eventually.

“Honestly, down the road, I’d be lying — I don’t know what I’m going to feel like,” Wright said of the possibility to eventually coach in the NBA, via an appearance on ESPN’s Keyshawn, JWill & Max.

Wright previously spent 21 seasons at Nova, winning two national championships. He’s spurned NBA offers before and upon his retirement, recently accepted an advisory-type role with Villanova.

When pressed by the hosts to expand on any potential NBA interest, Wright was non-committal and insisted nothing was imminent. “Not right now. That was something I always thought about,” Wright told ESPN. “My experience with the Olympics kind of scratched that itch. … I kind of feel like I did it a little bit. And I loved coaching those guys.”

As he eluded to, Wright’s not without NBA experience. In 2020, he was an assistant to Greg Popovich on the United States Olympic team that won gold. Amongst those assisted by Wright were superstars Kevin Durant and Damian Lillard.

Before Wright can consider once again coaching KD, Dame or any number of their peers, he reiterated that he needs some time away – and that he already has another job. “Right now I definitely need a break,” Wright told Keyshawn, JWill & Max. “Right now I’m looking forward to this (special assistant) position at Villanova.”

Final Four 2022: Villanova’s Justin Moore, who tore Achilles, comforted by coach before loss to Kansas

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Villanova head coach Jay Wright was seen consoling his injured star Justin Moore shortly before tipoff of the Wildcats’ Final Four matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks Saturday.

The junior shooting guard tore his Achilles tendon in the closing seconds of the team’s South Region championship against the Houston Cougars March 26. The injury cost Moore the chance to play in the tournament semifinal.

Moore, who averaged 13.6 points per game for the Wildcats during the NCAA Tournament, was sorely missed against Kansas, which took an 11-point lead into the half and never looked back, eventually winning 81-65.

Before the game, Moore spoke about the support he received from his team, family, Villanova fans and even the NBA community.

“It was great for me personally. I needed people by my side. I was feeling hurt and down,” Moore said. “Them saying they love me and they have my back and giving encouraging words, that really helped me.”

Wright was by Moore’s side comforting his player on Saturday as the starting lineups were announced.

Moore was injured after he appeared to slip while dribbling against a defender with less than 40 seconds left in the game against Houston.

Moore limped off the court with the help of teammates, who consoled him after his exit. The guard was later seen on crutches.

“It was really nerve-wracking and hard for me. We were winning that game and playing great basketball as a team and going into the Final Four,” Moore said. “People saw me crying and stuff. It was a lot of emotions going through. I had to sit back and take it all in.”

“My family was there, and my teammates were there to help me,” he added. “If I didn’t have them by my side, I don’t know where I’d be right now.”

Moore said another person who reached out was NBA star Kevin Durant, who tore his right Achilles tendon in Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals while playing for the Golden State Warriors.

“He called me right away. He FaceTimed me,” Moore said. “I wasn’t expecting that. I was still a little bit off from the medicine. That, right there, kind of snapped me out of it. It was a great feeling.

“He was telling me that my career isn’t over. It’s just begun,” Moore added. “An injury like this, a torn Achilles, you can come back from it. In previous years, people would think your career is over, but he was letting me know that my career isn’t over. He said I can always hit him up for advice.”

Moore was a productive player for Villanova this season, averaging 34.6 minutes, 4.8 rebounds, 1 steal and 14.8 points per game.

The loss on Saturday denied Villanova another national championship appearance. The Wildcats have two championships – 2016 and 2018 – in Wright’s 22 seasons.

Kansas defeated Villanova on Saturday night 81-65 to get to the NCAA men’s basketball national championship.

It’s the first national title game the Jayhawks are set to appear in since 2012. Kansas has not won a national title since 2008. The team awaits the winner of the Duke and North Carolina game in the other Final Four matchup, who were set to play next at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Kansas went wire-to-wire for the win. The Jayhawks took an 11-point lead into the half and never looked back. The Jayhawks built up a 19-point lead at one point and were able to hold off a late run from the Wildcats.

The Jayhawks shot 53% from the floor and 54% from beyond the arc. The team out-rounded Villanova 35-28. Both statistical categories proved to be among the big difference-makers in the game.

McCormack talked about what sparked his performance and whether a conversation with coach Bill Self helped.

“Just talking with coach, he wanted us to have an inside presence, and usually if you can play inside/out it opens up more shots, more driving lanes, a lot of cuts,” McCormack said. “And I think starting off early on it opened the rest of the floor off and we played off of that and made it easy.”

Kansas’ offense was buoyed by Ochai Agbaji ‘s 21 points and Jalen Wilson’s 11 points. Christian Brown added 10 points as well. Wilson finished with 12 rebounds and five assists in his stat line. Remy Martin, who had been a sparkplug off the bench, was held to only three points.

Charles Barkley, who has been a broadcaster during then national championship, was impressed by what he saw from Kansas. He said despite an average showing from some guys he believed Kansas was going to “win a national championship.”

Obviously, that remains to be seen.

Collin Gillespie led the way for Villanova with 17 points. Brandon Slater had 16 and Caleb Daniels, who got hot in the second half, had 13 points and five rebounds. Villanova will be denied another national championship appearance.

Kansas, which is the last No. 1 seed remaining in the tournament, lost in 2012 to Kentucky. The team beat Memphis in overtime in 2008 to capture their third national title.

The 2020 team never got a shot at a title run because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I think it does have added value to me and the players because there’s no guarantees in this tournament. A lot of times the favorites don’t win, obviously. But in ’20 we had a team that was equipped to make a run. We were so good defensively,” Self said. “And we had enough scoring. I thought that was probably as prepared a team to do well in the tournament as any we’ve had.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

And I think that even though we haven’t really talked about it like this, but these guys really haven’t tasted what the NCAA Tournament is all about, even though we had a great team in ’20. So I think there’s been added value put on this one because of what we missed out on in ’20.”

Legendary Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving talks March Madness, what it takes to win it all

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Legendary Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving, or as fans affectionately call him Dr. J, knows a thing or two about what it takes to be great.

Erving, an 11-time NBA and five-time ABA All-Star, spoke to Fox News Digital on Saturday about this weekend’s Final Four matchups and the talented coaches that got them there.

DUKE NATIONAL CHAMPION NATE JAMES TALKS 2001 TITLE RUN, FINAL FOUR MATCHUP, FIRST SEASON AS HEAD COACH

“My hat goes off to all of them for achieving this great honor in getting there and, however it turns out at the end, there are no real losers – there’s only three losers,” Erving said with a chuckle when asked about his predictions.

In this bit of action, San Antonio Spurs’ Billy Paultz (5) and Mark Olberding (53) watch on as Philadelphia 76ers’ Julius Erving dunks during a game at Philadelphia.

“Somebody’s got to walk out the champion.”

The Duke Blue Devils, who have won five NCAA titles under retiring head coach Mike Krzyzewski, will take on the North Carlina Tar Heels, a program that has won six national championships and reached more Final Fours than any program in college basketball, on Saturday at 8:49 p.m. ET.

But before that, Jay Wright and the Villanova Wildcats will take on the No. 1 seeded Kansas Jayhawks who are on the hunt for their first national championship since 2008.

“Well, you know Jay Wright’s my guy,” Erving said when asked about his predictions. “I used to live at Villanova when I was in Philly and I played for the 76ers. I lived there. I used to go to the school and practice and take my kids to the camps that Rollie Massimino (1973-92) used to have there – so I’m partial in that regard.”

Erving didn’t elaborate on who he thinks will come out on top Saturday but when asked about the possibility of Krzyzewski winning it all, he described it as a storybook ending to a legendary career.

“That’s fantasy stuff. That’s the Cinderella story. You think Saint Peter’s being there was a Cinderella story – Duke winning and him being carried off the court in his last game … It would be very appropriate.”

This year’s Final Four is not shy of talent and competition. That’s why the last team standing will have this characteristic, according to Erving.

“In the storm, you have to remain calm. You have to stay true to your preparation – everybody is prepared for this moment and how you handle that moment is the calmness that you have to have inside.”

Erving spoke to Fox News Digital on behalf of Coca-Cola’s “Debate the Goatness” Campaign, which launched on Selection Sunday and will run through the men’s and women’s championship games.

Other basketball greats including 2021-2022 NBA MVP front-runner Joel Embiid, four-time NCAA champion Breanna Stewart and Naismith Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie are also featured in two commercials that will be broadcast throughout the duration of both tournaments.

Trey Wingo breaks down highly anticipated NCAA men’s Final Four: ‘You can’t script this’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

March Madness arguably ranks a close second to the Super Bowl when it comes to major sporting events fans bet on most.

The NCAA men’s basketball Final Four will take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans Saturday with the national championship game played Monday. Caesars and Caesars Sportsbook will have some interesting experiences for fans at their properties – Harrah’s New Orleans and Horseshoe Bossier City – over the weekend in the Big Easy.

Trey Wingo, Caesars’ chief trends officer and former ESPN commentator, told Fox News Digital the first two rounds of the men’s tournament are huge in the betting world.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski recognizes the crowd during a homecoming celebration for the national championship Duke basketball team at Cameron Indoor Stadium, April 7, 2015, in Durham, N.C.  (AP Photo/Gerry Broome)

“It’s like Christmas. Those first four days — Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday — I mean, the line to get into the (sportsbook) is absolutely packed,” Wingo said. “Outside of any NFL Sunday, and obviously the Super Bowl, the first two rounds of the tournament are by far one of the biggest weeks of the entire year.”

This year’s Final Four will feature some of the NCAA’s top programs. The marquee matchup will be the rivalry between Duke and North Carolina in their first-ever meeting in the tournament, while Kansas and Villanova will battle for the right to play in the national championship.

“This is the only Final Four in NCAA history where every single team represented has won multiple championships, and they’ve all won at least three,” Wingo said. “North Carolina has six, Duke has five and Kansas and Villanova each have three. Based on title pedigree alone, it’s the greatest Final Four we’ve ever seen.

(Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

“Then, you throw in the fact these four teams have literally won half of the last 16 NCAA Tournaments. That’s another thing. All four of these programs, by the way, have the top five winning percentages in the tournament. And if that wasn’t enough, then you have the first-ever NCAA Tournament meeting between Duke and North Carolina in their 258 showdowns. I mean, you can’t script this.”

MARCH MADNESS 2022: NORTH CAROLINA’S HUBERT DAVIS IN RARE COMPANY AS TEAM SET FOR FINAL FOUR

Wingo noted just how intertwined the four teams are.

“Here’s another one that’s crazy. Only one other time did Duke and North Carolina make it to the same Final Four. That was in 1991. Duke beat UNLV 79-77 in one semi, and North Carolina lost to Kansas. Duke beat Kansas for (coach Mike Krzyzewski) and Duke’s first-ever NCAA championship,” Wingo said.

North Carolina’s Caleb Love reacts during the second half of a game against UCLA in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament March 25, 2022, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Chris Szagola)

“Well, what’s lost in all that is the best player on the North Carolina squad that year scored 25 points in that national semifinals whose name is Hubert Davis, who just now happens to be North Carolina’s head coach who is trying to stop Duke and Mike Krzyzewski from matching North Carolina’s win total in championships at six.

“If you sent this to a Hollywood screenwriter, they’d say this is too obvious.”

According to Caesars, Duke (-190) is the favorite in this game against North Carolina (+160). Kansas (-200) is the favorite to win against Villanova (+170).

When it comes down to who takes home the national championship, Wingo told Fox News Digital he thinks it’ll be a storybook ending for Krzyzewski and Duke facing Kansas.

“If I were a betting man — and these days I am — I would absolutely lean toward Duke in that contest (against North Carolina) and I would absolutely lean towards Kansas in the other semi because of the injury (to Villanova’s Justin Moore),” he said.

“Now, think about it this way: We have a scenario, if that plays out, a reunion of the 1991 national championship — Duke against Kansas — which was Krzyzewski’s first NCAA championship, and then it would end up being his last.”

It’s the first time the Final Four will be at the Superdome since Caesars become its sponsor. The last time the games were played there was in 2012 when it was called the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Kentucky beat Kansas in that game.
