Fultz tears ACL, out for season; Magic beat Cavs 105-94

Former top overall draft pick Markelle Fultz suffered a season-ending tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first quarter of the Orlando Magic’s 105-94 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

The Magic confirmed the ACL injury after the game and said Fultz would miss the rest of the season.

Fultz, who was off to the best start of his career, was driving to the basket less than five minutes into the game when he was cut off by Isaac Okoro and his left knee buckled without contact. The Orlando point guard writhed in pain on the floor for several minutes before he was helped into a wheelchair.

Fultz signed a three-year, $50 million extension last month and was finally showing the promise that made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft as he led the Magic to a quick start this season. He came in averaging a career-best 14-3 points in seven games.

Fultz was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as part of their lengthy rebuild but struggled for years with a tough-to-diagnose shoulder injury that ruined his jump shot. He was traded to the Magic in February 2019.

Terrence Ross scored 20 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead the Magic, who beat the Cavaliers for a second time in three nights.

Dwayne Bacon added 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and Nikola Vucevic chipped in 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for an Orlando squad off to its best eight-game start since the 2017-18 season. Down by as much as 13 points early on, the Magic surged ahead by as much as 21 early in the fourth quarter.

Collin Sexton scored 21 points for Cleveland, his eighth straight game with at least 20 points to start the season. That broke LeBron James’ franchise record from 2004-05. Sexton played through a left ankle sprain suffered in the first half.

Orlando missed its first six 3-point tries but made 10 of 17 from beyond the arc in the second and third quarters. Cleveland was 4 of 26 from 3-point range.

Andre Drummond had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Cavs, his eighth straight double-double.

Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said he stopped his preparations for the game to watch supporters of President Donald Trump storm the U.S. Capitol. “It’s saddening and it’s disgusting, to be honest with you. Our democracy has been a beacon for hundreds of years of what the world ideologically should be, and people have looked up to us all over the world. And what is happening there is a disgrace,” he said.

Sexton scores 32 points, Cavs beat Pistons 128-119 in 2 OT

The Cleveland Cavaliers took full advantage of Detroit’s inability to close out games.

Collin Sexton scored 32 points and three of his teammates had at least 21 points, helping Cleveland beat Detroit 128-119 in two overtimes Saturday night.

“Multiple opportunities where we could’ve given in, multiple opportunities that we could’ve lost the fight,” Pacers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “Every player, to a man, decided that was not going to happen. We will not quit and that’s a testament to those guys and building our identity.”

While the Cavs improved to 2-0, the rebuilding Pistons dropped to 0-2 after also struggling down the stretch in their season-opening loss at Minnesota.

“The positive is we put ourselves in a position to win two straight games,” Detroit coach Dwane Casey said.

Cleveland center Andre Drummond had 23 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks against his former team.

“A lot of memories just rushed into my head,” said Drummond, who was drafted No. 9 overall by Detroit in 2012 and traded to the Cavs last season.

Darius Garland added 21 points and a career-high 12 assists, setting the tone for a young backcourt with Sexton that combined to score 49 points in the season-opening win over Charlotte.

“Our two young guards carried us and put us in a position to win,” Bickerstaff said.

Cleveland reserve Cedi Osman had 22 points, Kevin Love scored 15 points after missing the opener with a calf injury and JaVale McGee had 11 points off the bench.

Jerami Grant had 14 of his 28 points in the third quarter, when the Pistons took control before blowing it, and Blake Griffin finished with 26 points.

Detroit’s Derrick Rose had 13 points, missing 11 of 15 shots, and had some costly turnovers.

Cleveland led 59-53 at halftime with three scorers — Sexton, Osman and Garland — already in double figures. Griffin had 18 points at halftime, scoring all his points on 3-pointers with just two misses beyond the arc.

Detroit closed the third with a 14-0 run, capped by Grant’s 3-pointer from the team’s logo at midcourt, after the Cavs led by 11 earlier in the quarter.

The Pistons were ahead 101-93 with three-plus minutes left in regulation and allowed the Cavs to score the final eight points — five on Drummond’s free throws — in the quarter to extend the game.

Rose helped the Pistons take a nine-point lead in overtime. He later lost opportunities to seal the victory with an unforced turnover while being guarded by Drummond with 13 seconds left and by losing the ball by dribbling it off Drummond’s foot to give it back to the Cavs with 1.2 seconds left.

“I’ll take Derrick Rose going to the basket,” Casey insisted.

    TIP-INS

Cavs: Forward Isaac Okoro, the No. 5 overall pick in this year, was 0 for 4 and scoreless in 42 minutes … Cleveland was without Matthew Dellavedova due to a concussion, Dylan Windler, who broke his left hand in the season-opening win over Charlotte and 2019 first-round pick Kevin Porter Jr., who faces charges of improperly handling firearms in a vehicle. … Bickerstaff has a 7-6 record with the Cavs, who had him take over in February when former Michigan coach John Beilein resigned during his first season.

Pistons: Team owner Tom Gores acknowledged the franchise is rebuilding with a revamped roster and he hopes fans are patient with the young team during a pregame news conference on a Zoom call. “It’s too early to talk about the playoffs,” Gores said. “This is a very young team.” … Detroit was allowed to have up to 250 spectators in the stands and there were about 100 family members of players and coaches, team employees and invited guests in attendance.

LeBron James rookie card sells for record $1.8M at auction

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James saw one of his rare rookie cards sell for a record $1.8 million at an auction Saturday.

James, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers at the time, signed the card, and a patch from one of his jerseys was featured as well. Only 23 of the items were ever made.

LEBRON JAMES, ANTHONY DAVIS WON’T WEAR SOCIAL JUSTICE MESSAGE ON JERSEYS

Los Angeles Angels star outfielder Mike Trout saw one of his cards sell for $923,000 back in May. At the time, it held the record for the most expensive modern-day card — before this weekend’s auction.

When officials first announced the auction for James’ rookie card back in June, it was expected to go for over $1 million.

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kevin Love calls on NBA players to help arena workers amid coronavirus closures

Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kevin Love is calling on other NBA players to “walk the walk” and help out arena workers after the league suspended the remainder of the season in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Love took to Instagram last week to announce he would be donating $100,000 through the Kevin Love Foundation to workers of the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse arena in downtown Cleveland.

FORMER NBA PLAYERS CALLED BACK TO CHINA AFTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE ANNOUNCES PLANS TO RESUME PLAY: REPORT

“Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. And the fear and anxiety resulting from the recent outbreak of COVID-19 can be extremely overwhelming,” he wrote in his post.

“I’m concerned about the level of anxiety that everyone is feeling and that is why I’m committing $100,000 through the @KevinLoveFund in support of the @Cavs arena and support staff that had a sudden life shift due to the suspension of the NBA season.”

On Wednesday, Love appeared on NBC’s TODAY show to discuss his cause further, asking that other players in the league join him in supporting those who have supported them.

“A lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck. I felt this is really the time, especially for us NBA players, to walk the walk and be more than athletes,” he said.

He continued: “It was just a way for me to try and help navigate this incredibly stressful and anxiety-ridden time, to just pay it forward and really help them…I think it’s more of a time for us to step up and be community leaders and do what’s right for the people that are having a very stressful and tough time.”

Cavs reward Bickerstaff with contract after strong start

J.B. Bickerstaff’s impressive start with the Cavaliers has been rewarded.

Bickerstaff, who has Cleveland playing its best basketball this season since taking over when John Beilein suddenly resigned last month, agreed to a multi-year contract with the team on Tuesday.

The Cavs announced the deal with Bickerstaff shortly before their game in Chicago, where they started a six-game trip.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Terms of the deal were not immediately known.

Although they still have one of the NBA’s worst records, the Cavs have shown major improvement in a short period under Bickerstaff. They’re 5-5 going into Tuesday’s game against the Bulls and the Cavs have had more energy and exhibited more togetherness than at any time for Beilein.

“They bought in automatically,” Bickerstaff said before tip-off in Chicago. “They’re competing, playing together and doing all the things we’ve been trying to push. They’ve led the way and made it easy for us as coaches. It’s exciting just to be a part of it. They’re obviously the ones that are gonna carry us.

“It’s our jobs as coaches to just steer the ship a little bit.”

Bickerstaff was promoted after Beilein stepped down after 54 games in his first season. He had been serving as an associate head coach under the 67-year-old Beilein, who cited personal health issues as one of his reasons for leaving a job he thought he was ready to handle.

“We are very fortunate to have someone of J.B.’s caliber and basketball pedigree lead our franchise as head coach,” said general manager Koby Altman. “His wealth of experience, coupled with the respect he has garnered around the NBA and with this team, has made for a seamless transition from associate head coach to head coach.

“The amount of grit and determination instilled in our players, from both an accountability and attention to detail standpoint over this short period of time, has been met with admiration, respect and overall excitement throughout our entire locker room. We have already observed the impact he has made on our players through his first 10 games as head coach and we are looking forward to seeing just how far he can effectively drive our developing culture and lead this franchise into the future.”

Over the weekend, the Cavs won consecutive tight games over Denver and San Antonio. Earlier this season, the club’s inexperience would cripple the Cavs in the closing minutes of games. Cleveland has also won three games against teams with over .500 records and the Cavs have improved their scoring and assist totals.

The 41-year-old Bickerstaff previously coached in Houston and Memphis before coming to Cleveland. He led the Rockets to the playoffs in 2015-16.

“Our players have done a phenomenal job of maintaining a high level of professionalism and growing maturity, of which I have been very appreciative,” Bickerstaff said. “I also take great pride and consider it an honor and privilege to live and coach in this community with my family, in front of this fan base and for this franchise. It has truly been a blessing and I look forward to the journey ahead.”

Bickerstaff was always seen as the eventual successor to Beilein, but he never expected things to move so quickly. Bickerstaff did not get the “interim” tag when he replaced Beilein, a sign that the Cavs were comfortable with the plan Altman hatched when he interviewed Bickerstaff last summer.

Cleveland’s players seem more relaxed under Bickerstaff, whose father, Bernie, was a longtime NBA coach and currently advises for the Cavs. The younger Bickerstaff worked in the past with Cavs star forward Kevin Love, who has played well lately.

Following Sunday’s win over the Spurs, Bickerstaff said the Cavs are bonding and making the most of a season once spiraling downward.

“They just keep pulling for one another and they celebrate other people’s success,” Bickerstaff said. “I think that’s a core value of a good team. That’s where we’re building. It’s fun to watch how they treat each other, how they respect one another. When a guy’s got it going, they’re willing to give up the ball and give themselves up for that guy. It’s part of the environment we’re trying to create.

“There’s a camaraderie, there’s a bond, there’s a common goal of the way that we’re playing. No one person is bigger than the team. You can see by different nights who contributes, there’s no pouting if it’s not your night. It’s all about the team. I think that’s the biggest difference.”

Reports: Cavaliers, Beilein splitting after just 54 games

Cavaliers first-year coach John Beilein will end a rough season by stepping down after 54 games, according to multiple reports Tuesday night.

The former Michigan coach, who was a surprising hire by the Cavs last year because of his age (67) and lack of any pro experience, is expected to say goodbye to staff and players Wednesday when they return from the All-Star break, ESPN.com reported, citing anonymous league sources.

Beilein signed a five-year contract — the final year was a club option — in May. ESPN said he and the Cavs negotiated a financial settlement that will pay him a portion of the remaining money on his 2019-20 contract.

Cleveland is just 14-40 — the worst record in the Eastern Conference — and Beilein struggled to gain his players’ confidence or respect while the losses piled up.

Associate head coach J.B. Bickerstaff is expected to take over on an interim basis for Beilein. Bickerstaff coached in Memphis for nearly two full seasons before being fired last year. He was also Houston’s head coach in 2015-16.

Beilein’s departure continues a troubling pattern for the Cavs, who have been plagued by coaching instability and nearly constant change over the past few years. Bickertstaff is Cleveland’s seventh coach since 2013.

Beilein never got comfortable in his short time with the Cavs. He struggled to adjust to the pro game with its more demanding travel schedule and lack of practice time. Everything was so different than in college, where Beilein didn’t have to juggle massive egos and deal with players making much more money.

The losing took its toll on Beilein, who admitted being beaten down before the Cavs went their separate ways at the All-Star break. As it turned out, Cleveland’s first win at home since Dec. 23 that snapped a 12-game losing streak on Feb. 12 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse was Beilein’s final game.

When they hired Beilein, the Cavs felt his extensive college background would give him an advantage in developing Cleveland’s young players like guards Collin Sexton and Darius Garland. However, Beilein had a hard time connecting with his players and several veterans grumbled publicly and privately about his style.

There was a troubling stretch when veteran star forward Kevin Love expressed his frustration with teammates and the Cavs’ direction. Love later apologized, but it was clear to everyone around the team that Beilein wasn’t working out and something had to change.

Beilein also had his share of missteps. He inadvertently called his players “thugs” during a team meeting and while his apology was accepted, it didn’t help his cause within the locker room.

Beilein also had to deal with his son Patrick’s resignation as coach at Niagara. The younger Beilein cited personal reasons for leaving the program before his first game.

It’s not clear what will be next for Beilein, who went 571-325 at Canisius, Richmond, West Virginia and Michigan. He took the Wolverines to the NCAA Tournament nine times in 12 seasons.

Cavs, coach John Beilein plotting next steps in rough season

John Beilein has admitted that losing NBA games has hit him hard. Maybe too hard.

The 67-year-old former Michigan coach struggled to get through the season’s unofficial first half with the young Cavaliers, who have the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

It’s not clear if he’ll make it until the end.

Beilein and the Cavs have discussed the possibility of him stepping down before the end of the season. And while there has been no decision made about Beilein’s future, the team plans to reconvene this week following the All-Star break as players, coaches and executives return from much-needed retreats.

ESPN.com first reported the possibility of Beilein leaving the team before the end of the season on Sunday night as the All-Star Game wrapped up in Chicago.

It’s been a rough transition to the pro game for Beilein, who was wildly successful as a college coach — the past 12 seasons with the Wolverines. Beilein was a surprising hire by the Cavs, who convinced him he was the right choice and enticed him to leave the Big Ten powerhouse and sign a five-year contract in May.

Along with their woeful 14-40 record, there have been reports that players have not been pleased with Beilein’s coaching style, calling it simplistic with too much emphasis on fundamentals. Beilein seems to have his players’ respect, but it’s been a challenge for him to connect on the same personal level as he did with college kids.

After a recent home loss, Beilein said he wasn’t sure if players were still buying into him.

“I think that our guys have to measure themselves, are they bought into playing winning basketball?” he said. “I don’t think it has anything to do with a particular coach or coaches, whatever. They’ve just got to go and play hard. There’s moments that we have, that we have played really hard in a lot of adversity.

“I do know that I’m trying to do my job and work as hard as I can for them.”

Beyond the team’s on-court struggles, Beilein had to recently apologize to players after inadvertently calling them “thugs” during a team film session in Detroit.

When they hired Beilein, the Cavs felt he was the perfect coach to help develop young players such as second-year guard Collin Sexton, rookie Darius Garland and forward Larry Nance. Jr. But Cleveland has been plagued by scoring droughts, poor defense and late-game collapses with the Cavs’ inexperience emerging and hurting them at the worst possible times.

A shake-up was expected at the trading deadline, but instead of dealing either star forward Kevin Love or Tristan Thompson, the Cavs acquired two-time All-Star center Andre Drummond in a deal with the Pistons.

The Cavs were hoping the move would give them a spark or at least appease a fan base becoming more disenchanted with every lopsided loss. However, Cleveland suffered its worst home loss in 50 years in Drummond’s debut before snapping a 12-game home losing streak with a win in the final game before the All-Star break.

Beilein went 829-468 as a college coach. He won 428 games at Michigan and the Wolverines made the NCAA Tournament nine times and twice advanced to the Final Four in his 12 seasons.

If Beilein does step down, associate head coach JB Bickerstaff would likely replace him. Bickerstaff previously coached for almost two seasons with Memphis. His father, Bernie Bickerstaff, is a senior adviser with the Cavs.

It’s likely the Cavs will have a better sense of Beilein’s future by the time they play at Washington on Friday. They’ll visit Miami the following day before hosting the Heat on Feb. 24.

Clippers hand Cavs worst home loss in franchise history

The presence of Andre Drummond began the night with optimism for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That positive feeling was quickly dashed by a 133-92 loss Sunday to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Cavaliers’ worst home defeat in franchise history.

“Tonight was pretty ugly, so show ’em your worst first and you only can go up from there,” Kevin Love said.

Drummond started in his first game with Cleveland after being acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline. He scored 19 points, had 14 rebounds and even hit a pair of 3-pointers in 29 minutes.

Drummond’s numbers weren’t nearly enough as the Clippers led wire-to-wire without star forward Kawhi Leonard. Cleveland’s previous worst was a 39-point loss to Chicago in 2012.

Lou Williams scored 25 points, Paul George had 22 and Marcus Morris added 10 in his first game with the Clippers.

Los Angeles’ biggest lead was 45 points in the fourth quarter after coach Doc Rivers had given his starters the rest of the night off.

Drummond stressed patience after Cleveland’s 12th straight loss at home. The Cavaliers have dropped 13 of 14 overall.

“We’re not looking at the scoreboard,” he said. “I said it when I first got here in the locker room. I don’t care about the record. I don’t care about the scoreboard. I just care about, did we get better today? My goal is to push these guys and keep them positive, continue to work hard and show no quit on this season.”

The Clippers didn’t miss Leonard, who was out because of a sore left knee. Morris, acquired from New York at the trade deadline, started in Leonard’s spot at power forward and played 22 minutes.

The Clippers were obviously angry following an embarrassing 142-115 loss in Minnesota on Saturday. Los Angeles shot 70% percent in the first quarter, making 14 of 20 from the field.

“There are nights for whatever reason, it’s the perfect storm,” Rivers said. “Last night was one of those. You just move on from it.”

Morris knocked Drummond to the floor with a hard foul as Cleveland’s center tried to score in the third quarter. The play was upgraded to a flagrant foul after a review.

Morris’ final game with the Knicks came in Cleveland on Feb. 3. He scored 26 points in New York’s overtime win.

“That was cool, man,” Morris said of his debut. “The guys made the game easy. I asked them before the game where they liked the ball and they asked me where I wanted it.”

Drummond replaced Tristan Thompson, who has started 48 games. Thompson came off the bench and scored seven points in 19 minutes. Love had 10 points in 26 minutes.

Drummond ran through some drills during a Saturday workout to get familiarized with the team’s system.

“We had no practice time, so it was expected for us to come out and look lost, obviously because we were trying to figure out plays,” he said. “I didn’t really know many plays yet.”

    TIP-INS

Clippers: Leonard missed his 13th game of the season. … G Patrick Beverley (strained right groin) was out for second straight game. … Los Angeles wore throwback Buffalo Braves uniforms. The franchise played in Buffalo from 1970-78.

Cavaliers: Drummond is 3 for 24 on 3-pointers this season. …. Thompson hit his fourth career 3-pointer in the second quarter. … Kevin Porter Jr. had 17 points.

    TOUGH TIMES

The Cavaliers’ celebration of their 50th season in the NBA has seen the team have the worst record in the Eastern Conference.

“We were not good and way out of sync in so many ways,” coach John Beilein said of the latest loss. “While it’s not acceptable to us, it’s understandable given the new dynamic of our team. So coaches will meet again tomorrow and we will try to get some better symmetry on it.”

    WELCOME BACK

Clippers assistant Tyronn Lue was the Cavaliers’ coach during their 2016 NBA championship season. He returned to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse for the first time since being fired by Cleveland after six games last season.

Lue was given a standing ovation and waved to the crowd when he was introduced during a timeout.

“This is the house that Jim Brewer and Ty Lue built,” Rivers said. “It’s a great feeling when you return to a place you won a championship. Heck, he had a parade in the streets here. That’s a pretty good memory.”

Brewer, who played for the Cavaliers and several other teams in a 10-year NBA career, is Rivers’ uncle.
