Corey Seager homers twice for Rangers in victory over Royals

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Corey Seager was hitting home runs in Globe Life Field before he called the park home. The shortstop now has his first multi-homer game with the Texas Rangers.

Seager snapped an 0-for-16 slump with solo homers in each of his first two at-bats, Martin Perez pitched 6 1/3 solid innings and the Rangers opened a nine-game homestand with a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

“Corey, he’s going to keep coming at you … He doesn’t give in. And it’s every single pitch. He’s trying to do damage, he’s trying to hit the ball as hard as he can,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “It’s nice to see him get some results.”

After going the opposite way to left-center for a two-out solo shot in the first inning to put Texas ahead to stay, Seager’s leadoff homer in the third to right-center made it 4-0.

All six of his homers this season have come in the stadium where two seasons ago in the neutral-site playoffs, he hit seven homers in 16 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers and was MVP of both the NL Championship Series and World Series.

But Seager had been hitless in the previous four games to drop his batting average to a season-low .231.

“It was just a good offensive night all around. You know, we had some chances in New York and never felt like we got that big hit,” said Seager, who joined Texas over the winter on a $325 million, 10-year contract. “So to kind of get out there and get on the board early and take some walks, get some big hits, it kind of really kind of jumpstarted us.”

Texas had three consecutive singles off Brad Keller (1-3) after Seager’s two-out homer in the first, with Kole Calhoun’s two-run hit making it 3-0. The Rangers were coming off a three-game series against the Yankees when both teams had a combined five runs — New York won two of the games.

Perez (1-2) struck out six without a walk and was charged with four runs, but only one was earned. The left-hander has allowed just two earned runs over 26 1/3 innings for a 0.68 ERA his last four starts.

“Martin’s doing what Martin does. He’s pitching really well,” Woodward said. “I mean, he just kind of ran out of pitches there, but I still thought he had a lot left.”

The Royals, who have lost three games in a row and eight of 10, scored the three unearned runs in the seventh with just-in third baseman Charlie Culberson making errors on consecutive plays.

Joe Barlow worked a perfect ninth for his sixth save in as many opportunities, including Calhoun’s diving catch of Whit Merrifield’s liner in the right-center gap for the second out

Keller allowed six runs (five earned) and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings, with three strikeouts and one walk. The right-hander’s season ERA went up almost a full run — from 1.74 to 2.70.

“He got better as he went. A couple of pitches he’d like to have back,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “One obviously the fastball on the home run. He gets two quick outs with good plays behind him, and then the ball got too much of the plate.”

    LEFT LEADING

Perez departed after 106 pitches with a 6-2 lead. He had twice in his previous three starts exited scoreless games — seven innings at Philadelphia last Wednesday, and six innings against Oakland — and left a 1-1 game against Houston after seven innings.

    WITT HOMECOMING

Royals rookie infielder Bobby Witt Jr. played his first game against the Rangers less than 15 miles from where he went to high school. The second overall pick in the 2019 amateur draft is the son of former Texas pitcher Bobby Witt, who was there with the rest of his family and plenty of friends.

The 21-year-old Witt led off and played shortstop, only his second start at short after 24 games at third base. He went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. He opened the game striking out on a nine-pitch at-bat against perez when he fouled of five pitches, one a drive down the left field line that was only feet from being a homer. The first two Rangers batters grounded out to Witt.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: Salvador Perez was initially in the lineup as catcher on his 32nd birthday, but was switched to designated hitter for the third straight game. Perez has been dealing with right leg discomfort since catching the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Rangers: Catcher Mitch Garver was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Monday, because of a right forearm flexor muscle strain. The team hopes medication and rest will ease the issue in his throwing arm. … RHP Jon Gray, who exited his start Monday because of knee soreness, felt good Tuesday and appears on track to make his next scheduled start Saturday against Boston.

    UP NEXT

Both teams are expecting to use an opener for the second game of the series, which follows a weekend when both had consecutive rainouts, played doubleheaders Sunday and then had makeup games Monday on what was supposed to be an off day.

Angels’ Mike Trout plunked in win over Texas, X-rays negative

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Mike Trout left the Los Angeles Angels’ 8-3 win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday after being hit in his left hand by a pitch, but the team said X-rays were negative and the three-time AL MVP is day to day.

Trout was struck by a 1-1 slider from Rangers right-hander Spencer Patton leading off the fifth inning. He said he had difficultly picking up the 81 mph pitch in the shadows on a day when Globe Life Field’s roof was open, and he lowered his hands to protect his midsection.

“Like a normal day, I probably just turn like this (turning his left shoulder in) and just get hit,” Trout said.

Trout jumped around and shook the hand in pain. He initially walked toward the visiting dugout, then marched about halfway down the first-base line, where he was met by trainer Mike Frostad and manager Joe Maddon. Frostad checked to see if Trout could squeeze the hand, then walked him off the field and back to the clubhouse.

Maddon said he could immediately see Trout was in more pain than expected on that type of pitch and took him out.

“I just decided, let’s get it looked at, get some ice on it and get you back sooner,” Maddon said. He added he’ll “more than likely” sit Trout for a game Monday night at Houston.

Trout is hitting .267 this season with two home runs and two RBIs. He doubled on a flair to short right field during the Angels’ three-run third inning in which they took a 4-1 lead.

Trout said he initially feared the hand was broken and said he was frustrated where the pitch struck him.

“Could have hit me anywhere else, but hit me in my hand,” he said.

Mike Mayers (1-0) retired two of three batters to end the fifth for starter Jose Suarez. The Angels have won three straight for the first time since August.

Seven Angels had one RBI. Los Angeles took advantage of seven walks — five of those runners scored — and three Texas errors plus a passed ball that scored a run.

Adolis Garcia hit a two-run home run for the Rangers, who have lost three straight and are 2-7 to open the season for the first time since 2006. Texas starter Martin Perez (0-2) allowed four runs, three earned, in four innings.

It was the second homer of the season and the first since opening day for Garcia, who led Texas in homers last season with 31.

    WHEN YOU’RE HOT

The Angels’ Matt Duffy had a double and two singles and has reached in 23 of his last 24 games going back to last season. Jack Mayfield has an 11-game hitting streak extending back to last season. Shohei Ohtani has a seven-game streak this year.

Texas’ Nathaniel Lowe singled in the eighth inning, has hit in eight of nine games and is the only Ranger to reach base in all nine. Nick Solak singled twice, giving him three multihit games in five starts this year.

    NOTES

Angels 3B Anthony Rendon was given a day off for the second straight Sunday. … Texas SS Corey Seager was given the day to deal with what manager Chris Woodward called normal wear and tear. … The Rangers have had a starter go five innings only once this season, with one of their nine games having a one-inning opener. … The roof was open for the fifth time in six games this season with 67 degrees at first pitch. In the two previous seasons of the ballpark, the roof was open six times in 30 games in 2020 and 11 games during last year’s full 81-game home schedule.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Angels: C Kurt Suzuki stayed in the game after being hit in the back of the head by Andy Ibanez’s backswing in the eighth inning.

Rangers: INF-OF Brad Miller (back tightness) missed his second straight game after being a late scratch Saturday.

    UP NEXT

Angels: RHP Michael Lorenzen (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will open the Houston series against Astros RHP Luis Garcia (0-0, 0.00).

Rangers: RHP Jon Gray (0-0, 6.75) is scheduled to come off the injured list and start Tuesday at Seattle against Mariners LHP Robbie Ray (1-1, 4.73) to begin a six-game AL West road trip. Gray left his Texas debut on opening day at Toronto after four innings with a blister.

Angels intentionally walk Rangers’ Corey Seager with bases loaded

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Texas Rangers‘ top hitter Corey Seager got quite the compliment Friday night when the Los Angeles Angels opted to walk the 27-year-old shortstop with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

Announcers noted that Seager got the “Barry Bonds treatment” when Angels manager Joe Maddon made the intentional walk call with the bases loaded, just the third time that’s happened in the majors since at least 1950.

METS’ BUCK SHOWALTER CALLS FOR CHANGE AAMID BATTERS BEING HIT BY WILD PITCHES, THINKS STICKY CRACKDOWN TO BLAME

“I thought by walking Seager there, of course, just trying to stay out of a big blow,” Maddon said with the Rangers leading 3-2 at the time of the call. “And also just to stir the group up, quite frankly.

“I walked out there and looked at (Austin Warren). I said, ‘How ‘bout …’ and then he kind of said, ‘Putting him on.’ I said, ‘Yeah, how ‘bout putting him on?’ And he kind of smiled. And then the infielders kind of dug it, too,” Maddon explained.

Warren said he was surprised but admitted, “I’m not going to tell Joe Maddon no.”

Seager joined Barry Bonds in 1998 and Josh Hamilton in 2008 in being given first base with the bases full. Maddon also made the call for Hamilton when he was managing the Tampa Bay Rays.

Jonah Heim puts on show with 5 RBIs off Shohei Ohtani in Rangers win

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Jonah Heim backed off the box and took a deep breath after swinging and missing the first two pitches from two-way standout Shohei Ohtani.

The switch-hitting catcher, batting ninth for the Texas Rangers with the bases loaded, didn’t miss the next pitch.

Heim hit a grand slam when the reigning AL MVP left a splitter up in the zone, and the Rangers went on to a 10-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. Heim later added an RBI before Ohtani was out of the game.

“He just has no fear in those moments,” manager Chris Woodward said of Heim.

“I was a little jacked up on my first two swings trying to do a little too much,” Heim said. “His stuff was good. Luckily he just kind of left one a little up for me, and I put a good swing on it.”

Corey Seager crushed his first home run with the Rangers right after Ohtani was pulled off the mound, though the Angels starter got to stay in as the designated hitter and hit a double in the ninth inning.

Ohtani (0-2) struck out five over 3 2/3 innings, but allowed six runs on six hits and threw only 70 pitches.

“I thought I made a couple of good splitters … obviously the one I gave up the grand slam just hung up there,” Ohtani said through his translator.

“His command wasn’t as sharp. He started out with a good velocity. Then that came down a bit, but an 0-2 grand slam from a No. 9 hitter on one of his best pitches is really unusual,” manager Joe Maddon said. “He wasn’t on top of this game. It’s going to happen.”

Heim’s first career slam put Texas up 4-2 in the second inning, which began with back-to-back singles by Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis Garcia. It was the first grand slam allowed by Ohtani in his 37 big-league starts, and the first MLB homer the right-hander gave up on a splitter.

Seager, who signed a $325 million, 10-year contract with the Rangers in December, greeted reliever Brian Moran with a two-run shot for a 7-2 lead. Seager added an RBI single an inning later.

The Angels led 2-0 before Ohtani threw his first pitch of the game. Mike Trout’s second homer of the season was a massive 472-foot solo shot to straightaway center before Brandon Marsh had an RBI single off starter Dane Dunning.

John King (1-0) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Dunning, before Brock Burke struck out five in two innings.

“We started off so well,” Maddon said. “I mean, it was really fun to watch the beginning of the game and then with him pitching, you feel pretty good about it. And it just slipped away.”

    GOING DEEP

Trout’s homer was the longest hit in the majors so far this season and matched the longest hit ever at Globe Life Field, the stadium with a retractable roof stadium in its third season. The roof was open. … The Angels were down 10-2 before Max Stassi hit a two-run homer in the eighth.

    5-4-3-2

Dunning struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings and benefitted from an unusual inning-ending 5-4-3-2 double play with Trout batting in the second with runners on first and second. Third baseman Brad Miller fielded the grounder and threw to second for a forceout before Trout beat the relay throw to first. But Tyler Wade tried to score from second and was thrown out at the plate by first baseman Lowe to Heim.

    SEAGER DINGERS

Seager’s first homer in a Rangers uniform was his ninth at Globe Life Field. During the 2020 season, the shortstop hit eight homers in 19 games there — three during the regular season, and 16 in the neutral-site playoffs when the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series. Seager was the MVP in both the World Series and NL Championship Series.

    TRAINER’S ROOM:

Angels: SS David Fletcher (strained left hip) didn’t make the trip to Texas after being put on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. He instead stayed in Anaheim, where he can work full-time with a physical therapist. … OF Taylor Ward (left groin strain) took some swings off live pitching. He is set to go through a full day of game-type activities Friday and could be activated from the IL as early as Saturday if all goes well.

Rangers: RHP Dennis Santana was placed on the COVID-19 injured list after he arrived at the ballpark with symptoms. He will have to miss a minimum of five days and have no symptoms for at least the last two days. … RHP Garrett Richards was activated from the 10-day IL after missing the start of the season with a blister on his right middle finger and pitched the eighth. … RHP Spencer Howard, who had been the scheduled starter Friday, was put on the 10-day IL because of a cracked fingernail that was causing a blister.

    UP NEXT

Angels top prospect lefty Reid Detmers makes his second start this season, and the Rangers will go with Matt Bush out of the bullpen for the second game of the four-game series.

Lyles’ strong start leads Rangers over sloppy Red Sox, 10-1

Former Boston utilityman Brock Holt hit two RBI singles, and the Texas Rangers used a surprisingly strong start by Jordan Lyles to beat the sloppy Red Sox 10-1 on Saturday night.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Rangers, who entered with the majors’ fewest wins since the All-Star break at 7-25. Andy Ibáñez and Adolis Garcia each had two of Texas’ season-high seven doubles, and center fielder DJ Peters made a terrific defensive play.

“That was one of our better games on all sides of the ball,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “Jordan really set the tone with the way he was throwing the ball. You could tell he had good stuff early.”

Lyles (6-10) pitched seven innings of one-run ball in his 50th career win. He came in 0-5 with a 7.46 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break and owned the AL’s highest qualifying ERA at 5.55.

“I felt comfortable out there for the whole game,” he said.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Garcia and Ibáñez each had three of the Rangers’ 17 hits.

Kiké Hernández had an RBI single for the Red Sox, who committed a season-high five errors, had two wild pitches and two baserunners cut down.

“That was embarrassing today,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “It’s not acceptable. For a team that’s fighting for the playoffs to show up like that, and play like that, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose the game, it’s how you win or lose the game. That’s not acceptable.”

Holt was with the Red Sox from 2013-19. He was part of the 2018 world champions, hitting for the only cycle in MLB postseason history that year.

“This place was home,” said Holt, who got a warm reception for the second straight night. “I got married playing for the Red Sox, had two kids playing for the Red Sox, we bought a house here, so this place is really special to me and my family.”

Peters made two outstanding plays on Rafael Devers’ deep fly ball, doubling up Hernández at first with a throw on the fly from the warning track after making a leaping catch at the wall.

“We had a little bit of traffic early,” Lyles said. “Obviously, that play DJ made; the game would have looked a little different.”

The Red Sox made two throwing errors on consecutive hits during a three-run fourth that chased Eduardo Rodriguez (9-7) and made it 5-1.

Second baseman Hernández threw wildly to the plate on Holt’s run-scoring single. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts fired wide of first on Garcia’s infield hit, scoring Kiner-Falefa, but all three runs in the inning ended up being earned.

Devers bobbled a grounder and Hunter Renfroe misplayed a ball in right during a four-run eighth.

Rodriguez lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up five runs and eight hits.

“It’s just one of those games that you have to turn the page and look forward to the next game,” he said. “You can’t let the way that things happened today get into your mind for the next game.”

    PLAYING THE MONSTER

Rookie infielder Ibáñez, in his fifth professional season, made just his second career start in left field. He played in front of Fenway Park’s 37-foot high Green Monster, handling three fly balls.

So, what advice did Woodward give him?

“If it’s hit in the air, just catch it,” Woodward said he told him.

    BIRTHDAY BOYS

Boston designated hitter J.D. Martinez turned 34 on Saturday, and catcher Christian Vázquez turned 31.

They were involved in a play when Vázquez singled, but right fielder Garcia cut down Martinez at the plate.

    WORTH NOTING

Woodward reinserted left-handed-hitting first baseman Nathaniel Lowe into the lineup after giving him Friday night off when the club faced lefty Chris Sale, hoping the struggling young player could relax after going just 1 for 14 in his previous four games. He doubled off the Green Monster his first at-bat. … The Rangers signed 30-year-old free agent RHP Buck Farmer to a minor league contract. He was released by Detroit on Aug. 17.

    TRAINERS ROOM

Red Sox: Vázquez played after having to leave Friday’s game early because he took a foul tip off the top of the left knee.

Texas LHP Kolby Allard (3-10, 4.88 ERA) is scheduled to face Boston RHP Nathan Eovaldi (10-8, 3.91) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon, but the game is in question with the approach of Hurricane Henri.

Ryu spins 3-hitter, Jays beat Rangers 5-0 in 1st game of DH

Hyun Jin Ryu threw a three-hitter for his third career shutout and Danny Jansen hit a home run for Toronto to lead the Blue Jays to a 5-0 win over the Texas Rangers in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Ryu (9-5) went the full seven innings, striking out four and walking one in his first shutout since May 7, 2019 with the Los Angeles Dodgers against Atlanta.

“During the bullpen sessions I had before the All-Star break, I talked with (pitching coach) Pete (Walker) and we discussed how my arm slot and release point had been dropping a bit,” Ryu said through a translator. “Today I was able to get on top again and that resulted in the changeup and the rest of my pitches to be a little faster than normal.”

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

The Blue Jays, winners of three straight, took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Marcus Semien and a run-scoring single by Bo Bichette. Jansen led off the fifth inning with his fifth homer and Randal Grichuk added a sixth-inning sacrifice fly to provide insurance.

Kolby Allard (2-6) allowed five runs, seven hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings for Texas, which has lost four in a row and eight of its last 11.

Ryu escaped trouble in the second inning with the game still scoreless. He allowed a leadoff triple to Joey Gallo but struck out John Hicks and induced a soft infield popout by Eli White before fanning David Dahl to end the threat.

The game took 1 hour, 48 minutes, the shortest game this season in the major leagues. Detroit and the Chicago White Sox played a doubleheader opener in 1:50 on April 29.

    TWO-WAY RELATIONSHIP

The Blue Jays, who received approval Friday from the Canadian federal government to return home later this month, changed the paint scheme on the dugouts at their temporary home to read “Thank You Buffalo” and include the logo of the Buffalo Bisons, the Triple-A affiliate they displaced this season.

While attendance hadn’t been announced for the doubleheader, it appeared that the twin bill drew the largest crowd of the Blue Jays’ tenure at Sahlen Field. The Jays’ previous largest home crowd of the season was 10,100 on Friday night.

    ROSTER MOVES

Rangers: RHP Demarcus Evans was called up from Triple-A Round Rock as the 27th man for the doubleheader.

Blue Jays: IF Breyvic Valera, who was batting .313 in 41 games at Buffalo, was selected to the major league roster. OF Jonathan Davis was optioned to Buffalo, but was the 27th man for the twin bill. LHP Nick Allgeyer, who appeared in 11 games for Buffalo and one with Toronto, was designated for assignment.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Rangers: C Jose Trevino (right forearm contusion) is 3 for 7 in two games so far in his rehab assignment at Double-A Frisco. Rangers manager Chris Woodward said Trevino is healthy enough to be activated in the next week, but needs to continue work on his timing. … C Sam Huff (right knee surgery) was activated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Round Rock. To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Tyler Phillips, who was with Round Rock, was designated for assignment.

Mariners win 3-2, hand Rangers 11th straight road loss

J.P. Crawford and Mitch Haniger homered late, and the Seattle Mariners sent the Texas Rangers to their 11th straight road loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.

The Rangers managed four hits in their fifth consecutive defeat overall. They matched the second-longest road skid in team history, an 11-game stretch in April and May 1982. Texas dropped 12 in a row away from home in May and June 2003.

“I think overall a lot of guys are struggling now on offense,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “It’s unfortunate. I think it gets contagious.”

Crawford hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to break a 1-all tie and Haniger added his 14th of the season in the eighth. The long balls gave the Mariners their season-high third straight victory and their major league-leading 12th one-run win.

Seattle is 12-5 in one-run games, including Friday’s 3-2 victory over Texas.

“That’s cool,” Crawford said. “I didn’t know that.”

Of his homer, he said: “I was just trying to get a little spark for my team in that inning.”

José Godoy singled home Kyle Lewis in the second for Seattle’s first run.

Mariners starter Justin Dunn struck out eight and pitched one-hit ball through 5 2/3 innings to stretch his AL-leading streak of games with three or fewer runs allowed to 15. But he was pulled after allowing his second hit, again failing to make it through the sixth.

Daniel Zamora (1-0) earned his first win since 2018 in his first appearance since being claimed off waivers from the New York Mets on May 22.

“I haven’t pitched a big league game since 2019,” Zamora said after getting four outs. “There was a lot of adrenaline going through me. I think that was part of it all, too.”

He combined with Paul Sewald and Rafael Montero to allow two hits in 3 1/3 innings. Montero earned his seventh save after giving up Nick Solak’s second sacrifice fly of the game in the ninth.

Dunn hit Isaiah Kiner-Falefa with a pitch leading off the fourth, then issued back-to-back walks with one out before Solak’s sacrifice fly tied it at 1.

Mike Foltynewicz (1-5) scattered six hits over seven innings, striking out two, but was done in by Crawford’s second homer of the season.

Woodward said Foltynewicz pitched well enough to win in his second straight seven-inning appearance, but the team wasn’t “scratching and clawing” for runs.

“There’s a few innings where we didn’t put any pressure on them,” the manager said.

Fellow relievers Kendall Graveman and Drew Steckenrider remain in San Diego under quarantine.

García, Arihara lift Rangers over Angels 6-4

Adolis García homered and doubled off Dylan Bundy, Kohei Arihara took a shutout into the sixth inning and the Texas Rangers got their offense on track in a 6-4 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.

Texas eclipsed its entire output from a three-game home series against Baltimore over the weekend, when it totaled just four runs.

“These guys have been working hard and we’ve had a good dialog every day,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said of his hitters. “It wasn’t a grand slam or a three-run homer, it was just using the whole field and really running the bases well.”

Justin Upton homered for the Angels, while Bundy (0-2) gave up five runs and seven hits and was knocked out the game during the Rangers’ five-run sixth inning. The right-hander had six strikeouts with two walks.

Arihara (2-1), in his fourth major league start, retired Angels star Shohei Ohtani in two at-bats, although one was a deep fly to center that García caught while crashing into the padded wall. Arihara and Ohtani were teammates in Japan with the Nippon Ham Fighters from 2015-17.

“Honestly, I felt like it was going to be gone off the bat,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “I thought it was one of the better swings I’ve put on the ball this season. And I feel like the wind brought it back a little bit. That might’ve had something to do with it. I was happy with the approach but didn’t get the right results.”

Ohtani even flipped his bat as he left the batter’s box, but Arihara had no issue with his friend’s reaction.

“For me, I was just thinking, ‘Don’t go over, don’t go over, don’t go over the fence,’” Arihara said through an interpreter. “(García) obviously made a great play and I was very happy to see that.”

Arihara gave up just two hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings with two walks and six strikeouts. Ian Kennedy pitched the ninth inning for his fourth save.

In just his seventh game this season and second start in center field, García made a case for more playing time when he got to Bundy for a third inning home run, reaching the seats in right-center for a 1-0 lead. It was his second home run of the season.

“I’m proud of him and he’s doing his thing (with) the opposite-field homer, the double, stayed through a slider,” Woodward said. “I just think he’s getting better and better.”

The Rangers widened their advantage in the sixth. Nick Solak started the scoring with a single to right field, as Joey Gallo came to the plate only after the Angels’ Jared Walsh failed to field the ball cleanly for an error.

Willie Calhoun had an RBI single, forcing Bundy from the game, and Jose Trevino followed with a sacrifice fly. García reached on a fielding error by third baseman Luis Rengifo that allowed Calhoun to score, and Brock Holt brought home the fifth run of the inning with a single.

The Angels failed to gain any traction offensively early after not playing the previous two days because of COVID-19 issues with their scheduled opponent, the Minnesota Twins. The unexpected downtime was a concern of Angels manager Joe Maddon before the game.

“We weren’t needing it, we weren’t wanting it but it had to happen that way,” said Maddon, who admitted that his pitchers probably were the group impacted the most. “Later in the year that might have been welcomed. It wasn’t as welcomed right now.”

Albert Pujols singled in a run to cut Texas’ advantage to 6-2 in the seventh. The slow-footed Los Angeles star managed to steal third base without a slide later in the inning, getting a big jump when Rangers pitcher Kyle Cody stopped paying attention to him.

“Great play, heady play, veteran play, all those different kind of things,” Maddon said of Pujols’ steal, the veteran’s first since he had three in 2019.

Pujols scored on a single by Kurt Suzuki, and Jose Iglesias scored on Cody’s wild pitch, making it 6-4.

    JUST A PITCH MAN

Ohtani will not be performing double duty when he returns to the mound Tuesday against the Rangers.

The Angels’ right-hander will start for the first time since April 4 after working his way through a blister issue on the middle finger of his throwing hand. Maddon said Ohtani will not bat because he is on a 75-pitch limit and the club doesn’t want to burn its designated hitter.

    DON’T WALK

The Rangers’ run of consecutive innings without allowing a walk ended at 27 when Arihara gave up a free pass to Walsh in the second inning. The 27 innings without giving up a free pass was the longest for the Rangers since another 27-inning streak April 10-13, 2012.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Angels: 3B Anthony Rendon (groin) began light baseball activity, hitting off a tee and working in the field. There remains no timetable for his exact return, but Maddon said, “I don’t think it’s far down the road.”

    UP NEXT

Ohtani (0-0, 1.93 ERA) will face the Rangers for the first time in his career, while making his 14th major league start. He will square off against Rangers right-hander Jordan Lyles (1-0, 4.70), who has given up six of his eight runs this season on home runs.

Gallo getting on base for Rangers without all of the extras

Joey Gallo is getting on base a lot for the Texas Rangers without going out of the park.

That is quite a shift for the 6-foot-5 slugger who homered in the only pitch he’s faced in an MLB All-Star Game and got to 100 career homers quicker than any player in American League history, at a time when he had only 93 singles.

Gallo reached base in each of his first 15 games this season, his only homer being an impressive 450-foot drive to center in the opening series at Kansas City. His other 10 hits were all singles and he had an MLB-high 15 walks. He got on three other times when hit by a pitch and was the only Texas base runner in the game where Joe Musgrove plunked him while throwing the first no-hitter in San Diego Padres history.

“When I was younger, I thought it was really cool to hit 40 home runs. And then I remember everyone’s just kind of like bashing me, saying I’m the worst 40 home run hitter,” said Gallo, 27. “And I was like, all right, I guess it’s not that cool to hit 40 home runs. It’s something that I don’t really focus on anymore. But I think it’s cool that I’m kind of doing the complete opposite of what I’m known for.”

Gallo had 40 homers in each of first two full big league seasons (2017-18), but he hit only .208 overall, with 127 of his 197 hits being for extra bases.

His .453 on-base percentage this season was seventh in the majors going into Monday night’s game at the Los Angeles Angels, even while hitting .239 (103rd out of 178 qualified batters) with a .304 slugging percentage (143rd).

The last Rangers player with a longer on-base streak to start a season was Ian Kinsler at 25 games in 2008. Going into Monday, the only longer active on-base streaks were by San Diego’s Manny Machado and Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr., both at 16 after extending theirs Sunday, when Gallo had his first day off this season.

“If he’s still able to get on base at almost a 50% clip, that speaks volumes of what this guy is as a hitter right now,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “He’s not even hitting homers and they’re still walking him.”

Opposing teams also employ drastic defensive shifts against the left-handed slugger, who has gotten used to “people running around crazy” when he’s at the plate. Tampa Bay used an alignment with five defenders in the outfield, and Gallo beat that with a bloop single up the middle.

“You kind of have to come up with a counter approach for it. I wasn’t going to be able to hit a double or a ball in the gap,” he said. “So I had to hit the ball on the ground. I had to hit bloopers, I had to work the count and try to walk, or hit it over the fence. … It was either kind of a singles, a walk or a home run approach.”

Woodward knows Gallo will eventually have to hit more homers, and the manager has full faith “he will because he has a ton of power.” Gallo homered in five of his first 14 at-bats this spring.

But Woodward doesn’t want Gallo stressing out about trying to go deep to the point that he starts pulling off pitches or chasing them.

“Which is going to lead to less on base at the end, and maybe hit a few more homers. But saying that, like, that’s not going to help us,” Woodward said. “When Joey gets hot, they tend to come in bunches. Obviously, he hits the ball in the air, and off his barrel it doesn’t usually come back. So right now he’s staying patient.”

When Gallo hit his 100th career homer in his 377th game on May 8, 2019, he was the first MLB player ever to reach that mark with fewer than 100 singles. That was in his injury-shortened All-Star season, when he hit .253 with 22 homers in 70 games.

During the pandemic-altered season last year, Gallo’s .181 batting average was the second-lowest among 142 qualifiers last year. The right fielder hit 10 homers in 57 games and won a Gold Glove for the first time.

“I know I’m more than a home run hitter,” he said. “I can hit singles, I can get on base. I can still do other things on the field besides hit home runs and still help the team win. At the end of the day, that’s really what matters.”

Garcia’s 2-run homer in 10th lifts Rangers over Rays 6-4

Adolis Garcia’s first major league homer, a two-run shot in the 10th inning, gave the Texas Rangers a 6-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night.

Garcia drove a 1-2 pitch from Cody Reed (0-1) the other way into the right-field stands. The native of Cuba leaped into the air and pumped his fists as he rounded first base, setting off a celebration in the Texas dugout as well.

“I was excited,” Garcia said through a translator, adding it was special to hit the game-winner on Jackie Robinson Day.

“You could just see the joy when he’s running around first base,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “It’s great to see.”

Nick Solak and Charlie Culberson also homered for the Rangers, who have won three straight following a four-game losing streak.

Garcia nearly hit his first homer Wednesday night, driving the ball off the top of the wall in right-center field and circling the bases amid confusion over whether it actually landed in the stands and bounced back onto the field.

The 28-year-old outfielder slid into home plate and was ruled safe. The call was overturned, leaving Garcia with a two-run triple that helped Texas finish a 5-1 victory.

“I told a friend, wait until tomorrow,” Garcia said, smiling. “I’ll get one.”

Josh Sborz (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning and Ian Kennedy finished up for his third save in three opportunities.

Mike Brosseau homered for the Rays, who went 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 overall.

“We’re not making the the most of the opportunities we’re getting,” Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said.

The defending AL champions have lost eight of 11 following a 2-0 start.

“The opportunities have been tough to come by lately,” Cash added, “but the ones we’re getting, we’ve got to find ways to get more out of them.”

Solak had a solo homer in the second and an RBI single off Andrew Kittredge to drive in the final run charged to Rays starter Rich Hill in the fifth.

Culberson’s second homer of the series, a two-run shot off Hill in the fourth, gave the Rangers a short-lived 3-1 lead.

The Rays erased deficits with Austin Meadows’ RBI single in the third, Brosseau’s two-run homer in the fourth and without getting a hit in the seventh, when Brett Phillips walked and scored the run that made it 4-all with help from a pair of throwing errors.

The Rangers looked as though they might be on the verge of getting through the seventh unscathed when catcher Jose Trevino’s errant pickoff throw to second base continued into center field, allowing Phillips to take off for third.

When center fielder Leody Taveras threw wildly past third as well, Phillips raced home to tie it.

Texas starter Jordan Lyles allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Hill went 4 1/3 innings for Tampa Bay, yielding four runs and seven hits.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Rangers: With OF/DH David Dahl getting a night off, Trevino batted second — ahead of Joey Gallo and Garcia — even though he’s not a prototypical No. 2 hitter. Woodward explained: “Why wouldn’t I? … I felt like I put a guy up there that’s obviously having the highest-quality at-bats and is one of our best hitters right now.”

Rays: SS Willy Adames and DH/INF Yoshi Tsutsugo were rested, but got called on to pinch hit in the 10th. Kennedy fanned both of them. … CF Kevin Kiermaier (left quadriceps strain) will travel with the team to New York this weekend and could be activated during a six-game road trip against the Yankees and Kansas City Royals. “He ran well, threw well. … We’ll see where we’re at (Friday),” Cash said after the defensive whiz worked out before the game.

    UP NEXT

Rangers: Return home to face Baltimore for three games before heading out on the road again. Mike Foltynewicz (0-2, 4.09 ERA) starts Friday against the Orioles, who counter with Jorge Lopez (0-2, 11.42) in the series opener.

Rays: Open a weekend series at Yankee Stadium. Cash entered Thursday night undecided on his pitching plans for Friday.
