Mike Zunino homers against former team as Rays top Mariners

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

After making a few adjustments in his swing during the last homestand, Tampa Bay‘s Mike Zunino is starting to see better results. The proof came against his former team.

Zunino hit a three-run homer off Robbie Ray, Shane McClanahan held Seattle hitless into the fifth inning and the Rays beat the Mariners 4-3 Thursday night for their fourth straight win.

Tampa Bay received all the offense it would need thanks to one swing from the former Mariners catcher. Zunino entered the game batting just .135, but he hit his third homer of the season in the fourth inning. It was Zunino’s fourth homer in 10 games against the team he spent his first six seasons playing for.

“He’s got such great stuff. He doesn’t let you breathe much,” Zunino said. “The fastball is always in, the slider is right under it. You just got to pick a spot and try to hunt it.”

Harold Ramirez also had an RBI single as part of the four-run inning for Tampa Bay.

All the offense for Tampa Bay came in one inning, meaning McClanahan had to match last year’s AL Cy Young Award winner.

McClanahan was overpowering early, received some terrific defensive help and kept Seattle’s slumping offense in a funk. The only hits Seattle managed off the hard-throwing lefty were Jesse Winker’s first homer of the season in the fifth inning and consecutive singles by Ty France and J.P. Crawford in the sixth that ended McClanahan’s night.

McClanahan (2-2) has allowed three earned runs or fewer in all six of his starts. He struck out five and walked two.

“It was a weird night. I felt good and just couldn’t find that rhythm,” McClanahan said. “Ultimately I had to battle and push through.”

Isaac Paredes saved a run in the third inning with a diving stop to rob France of a hit. Taylor Walls made a spinning stop on Eugenio Suarez an inning later to rob a hit.

“I owe those guys a drink or two,” McClanahan said.

Jason Adam allowed an RBI single to Suarez in the sixth inning and Adam Frazier hit his first home run for Seattle on the first pitch from Colin Poche in the seventh. Poche pitched a clean eighth inning and Brooks Raley worked the ninth for his second save.

It was the third straight one-run victory by the Rays over Seattle after taking two of three games last week at home. Seattle has lost eight of nine overall and has scored more than three runs only twice during that stretch.

Ray (2-3) threw 6 2/3 innings and struck out five but suffered his second straight loss. He relied mostly on his fastball at the end of his outing when he retired eight of the final 10 batters he faced.

“It feels like my timing is maybe just a little bit off,” Ray said. “But when it’s on, I mean, I felt like that last inning it started to click a little bit and I was able to reach back and get some more. So I think for me the fastball just felt good.”

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Rays: Tampa Bay started to get players and coaches back from its recent COVID-19 outbreak. C Francisco Mejía was reinstated from the virus list Thursday and likely will be back in the lineup on Friday. The Rays also welcomed back bench coach Matt Quatraro and pitching coach Kyle Snyder.

Bullpen coach Stan Boroski and field coordinator Paul Hoover remain out due to the virus.

Mariners: Seattle had a flurry of roster moves that included optioning RHP Matt Brash to Triple-A Tacoma and move him to the bullpen. The Mariners also placed RHP Matt Festa on the 15-day injured list due to tendinitis in his right elbow. Right-hander Riley O’Brien was recalled and lefty Danny Young was selected from Tacoma.

    UP NEXT

Rays: Tampa Bay is expected to use an opener Friday.

Mariners: RHP Logan Gilbert will make his sixth start and his first after being named the AL pitcher of the month for April. Gilbert was 4-0 with a 0.64 ERA in April. He threw 5 2/3 innings allowing one run in his last start against Miami.

Dusty Baker gets 2,000th win as Astros down Mariners

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Minutes after becoming the 12th manager in major league history to reach 2,000 wins, and the first Black man to do it, Dusty Baker was already looking ahead.

Asked to rank this latest accomplishment in a life already filled with so many, Baker paused for a bit before answering.

“Right now it’s at the top,” he said. “But I ain’t gonna stop now.”

Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve each hit a solo homer and rookie Jeremy Peña had two RBIs to help Baker hit the milestone with Houston‘s 4-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

Ten of the 11 other managers who have accumulated at least 2,000 wins are in the Hall of Fame. Bruce Bochy (2,003), who isn’t yet eligible, is the only exception.

The 72-year-old Baker’s career record is 2,000-1,745 and he’s the only big league manager to take five different teams to the postseason.

Baker, one of two Black managers in the majors, said being the first to reach the 2,000-win benchmark makes it even more meaningful.

“It means extra,” he said. “It means extra to the culture. It means extra to society. It means extra to my race, and it means extra hopefully for others to get an opportunity (so) I’m not the last.”

It’s another milestone in Baker’s storied career as a player and manager that has spanned more than 50 years. He’s reached the World Series twice as a manager, last season with the Astros and in 2002 with the San Francisco Giants. As a player, he went three times with the Dodgers, winning it all as a big-hitting left fielder in 1981.

Baker played with Hank Aaron and had relationships with many titans of the game who have died. He was asked if he thought his friends who are now gone were smiling down on him Tuesday night.

“Oh yeah, definitely, especially my dad because he was my first coach,” Baker said of his father, Johnnie B. Baker Sr., who died in 2009. “My dad was tough. My dad was tough because he believed in tough love.”

Cristian Javier (2-0) allowed two hits over 5 1/3 innings in his second start after opening the season in the Houston bullpen. Three relievers combined after Javier’s exit to shut out the Mariners for the second straight game after getting a 3-0 win in the series opener Monday.

Seattle’s J.P. Crawford went 0 for 4 with a strikeout to snap an 11-game hitting streak, which had been the longest active streak in the majors, as the Mariners lost for the sixth time in seven games.

“Our guys are grinding,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “They’re trying to get something going and there’s nothing we can do about today’s game. We’re going to come out tomorrow, it’s the last game on the road trip, and try to salvage something here in Houston.”

There was one out in the fourth when Alvarez connected off Chris Flexen (1-4) on a shot to center field to make it 1-0. Alvarez has homered in consecutive games and has four homers in his last five.

Flexen yielded two hits and a run while walking three in five innings. He fell to 0-5 in six career starts against the Astros.

Javier didn’t allow a hit until Ty France singled to start the fourth. But Jesse Winkler grounded into a double play before Javier retired Eugenio Suarez to end the inning.

There were two outs in the fifth when Javier plunked Abraham Toro before walking Jarred Kelenic. Javier left them both stranded by striking out Tom Murphy.

There was a runner on first with one out in the sixth when Blake Taylor took over for Javier. Taylor retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Anthony Misiewicz walked Alvarez with two outs in the sixth, ending his night. Diego Castillo came in and was greeted by a single from Yuli Gurriel before Kyle Tucker walked to load the bases.

Peña followed with a liner to left field to score two and extend the lead to 3-0.

Altuve’s shot came off Matthew Festa with one out in the seventh.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: OF Kyle Lewis homered in his first at-bat in the first game of a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. Lewis, the 2020 AL Rookie of the Year, hasn’t played all season while he recovers from surgery to repair a torn meniscus. “We’ve mapped out what it looks like for the next couple of weeks for him with playing time and his ramp up,” Servais said. “We’ll get him out playing in the field on consecutive days and all that other good stuff. We’ll see how it goes.”

Astros: Houston closer Ryan Pressly, who has been out since April 14 with inflammation in his right knee, needed just six pitches to throw a perfect inning for Triple-A Sugar Land in the first game of a rehab assignment. Baker said Monday the team wasn’t sure if one game in the minors would be enough for Pressly, or if he’d need multiple outings before being activated.

Tim Anderson helps White Sox beat Mariners for 4th straight win

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tim Anderson and the Chicago White Sox finally got to Robbie Ray.

With a little help from the weather.

Anderson homered and drove in three runs in the rain, and the banged-up White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Wednesday night.

Ray (1-1) was charged with six runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings in his first loss with his new team. He won the AL Cy Young Award last year with Toronto and agreed to a $115 million, five-year contract with Seattle in November.

The left-hander started two games against Chicago last season, recording a 1.35 ERA and striking out 27 in 13 1/3 innings. But he was knocked around by the White Sox this time.

“We had a little chance to do more homework,” Anderson said, “and we had a plan and we succeeded with our plan.”

Asked about the rainy conditions, particularly during a rough second inning, Ray said he wasn’t going to make any excuses. But a smiling Dallas Keuchel felt he caught a bit of a break in his first start of the year for Chicago.

“The Lake (Michigan) gods were kind to us a little bit,” Keuchel said. “It rained on Robbie and it sprinkled on me.”

Eloy Jiménez and Luis Robert also connected, helping Chicago to its fourth straight win since its dramatic loss at Detroit on opening day. Keuchel pitched five innings of three-run ball in career win No. 100.

The White Sox have been hit hard by injuries already this season, and they lost two more players in their second home game. Jiménez departed in the fifth with a left ankle contusion, and second baseman Josh Harrison left after seven innings because of lower back stiffness.

Ty France homered and drove in two runs for the Mariners, who lost their fourth straight game.

“Just couldn’t get enough going offensively,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said.

Chicago was clinging to a 4-3 lead when Adam Engel robbed pinch-hitter Jesse Winker of a leadoff homer in the sixth, making a leaping grab at the wall in right. White Sox reliever Kyle Crick threw his arms up in celebration after Engel came down with the ball.

Anderson and Robert then hit back-to-back homers in the seventh, and Liam Hendriks worked the ninth for his second save. Hendriks surrendered J.P. Crawford’s RBI single before closing it out.

“The effort by the bullpen … that’s high quality stuff against a very good opponent,” White Sox manager Tony La Russa said.

The start of the game was delayed for 47 minutes, and it rained for much of the night. The grounds crew spent almost as much time on the field as the players.

It really picked up with Ray on the mound in the second, and the White Sox took advantage.

“The second inning was probably the hardest it rained all night,” Servais said.

Jiménez led off with a deep drive to left for his first extra-base hit of the season. Jake Burger singled in Andrew Vaughn with one out, and Anderson made it 4-1 with a two-run double.

“They just were aggressive and they strung hits together right when they needed to,” Ray said. “I mean take out that second inning, I feel pretty good about that start.”

Keuchel (1-0) had to deal with increased rain in the fifth, and the Blue Jays pushed across two runs to pull within one.

Crawford slid home safely when Keuchel picked up Dylan Moore’s dribbler and sent a high flip to Yasmani Grandal at the plate. France had a run-scoring groundout, but Keuchel limited the damage by retiring Mitch Haniger on a foul popup for the final out.

    MR. 100

Keuchel struck out five and walked none. The 34-year-old left-hander, who had a career-high 5.28 ERA last year, said he got the scorecard for his milestone win and planned to authenticate his jersey.

“The hardest part is going to be getting the ball from Liam,” he said. “He likes to authenticate and keep all of his saves. So I’m going to have to offer up something. I told him to think about it.”

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: RHP Sergio Romo was placed on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation. The move was made retroactive to Tuesday, a day after the reliever pitched a scoreless inning at Minnesota in his 800th major league appearance. RHP Matt Koch was promoted from Triple-A Tacoma, and RHP Casey Sadler (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

White Sox: RHP Lance Lynn said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from right knee surgery. “But we’ll see how that goes because there’s still a lot of work left to do,” he said. Lynn had surgery this month and is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.

    UP NEXT

Right-handers Logan Gilbert and Jimmy Lambert start the series finale on Thursday. Gilbert (0-0, 1.80 ERA) pitched five effective innings in Seattle’s 4-3 victory at Minnesota on Saturday. Lambert is making his first appearance for Chicago this year and his fourth start in the majors.

Tommy Davis, 2-time NL batting champion with Dodgers, dead at 83

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tommy Davis, a two-time National League batting champion who won three World Series titles with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died. He was 83.

He died Sunday night in Phoenix, the Dodgers announced Monday without providing a cause. They were informed of his death by his daughter, Morgana.

Davis was an athletic standout at Boys High School in Brooklyn, where he was a basketball teammate of future Hall of Famer Lenny Wilkins. Davis also played baseball and was a long jumper on the school’s track and field team.

Davis was set to sign with the Yankees in 1956 when a phone call from Jackie Robinson changed his mind.

Robinson was playing what would be his final season with the Dodgers that year when he called Davis’ house and encouraged him to sign with the Brooklyn organization. Scouting director Al Campanis knew Davis’ mother was a Dodgers fan.

“My mother wondered who was calling,” Davis said in 2019. “I pointed to the receiver and mouthed the words, ‘It’s Jackie Robinson!’ I couldn’t believe I was speaking to one of my heroes, although I don’t remember doing much talking.”

Davis received a $4,000 bonus for signing with the Dodgers.

A happy Davis was smiling in his publicity photos for his first full season in 1957. That had former Brooklyn batting champion Pete Reiser worried that Davis was too nice.

“I want him mad at everyone in the world when he goes up there, including me,” said Reiser, who was managing in the minors at the time.

That season, Davis batted .357 with 17 home runs, 104 RBI and 68 stolen bases in 127 games.

Born Herman Thomas Davis in Brooklyn, he was the franchise’s first batting champion after the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. He won consecutive titles in 1962, when he hit .346 and led the NL in hits and RBI, and 1963, when he hit .326.

Davis’ 230 hits and 153 RBI in 1962 remain L.A. single-season records. He won World Series titles in 1959, 1963 and 1965.

Besides his eight years with the Dodgers, Davis played another 10 for the New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, Seattle, Houston, Oakland, Chicago Cubs, Baltimore, California Angels and Kansas City. The three-time All-Star retired in 1976.

He had a career .294 average in 1,999 games with 153 home runs and 1,052 RBI.

The Dodgers planned a moment of silence for Davis at their exhibition game against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.

Davis worked in the team’s community relations department until moving to Arizona about a year ago.

Besides Morgana, he is survived by wife, Carol, daughters Lauren, Carlyn and Leslie, and son Herman Thomas II.

Álvarez, Astros slug their way to 12-3 win over Mariners

The Houston Astros shook off the hitting woes that plagued them for most of the last week, slugging four home runs in a rout of the Seattle Mariners.

Yordan Álvarez homered and had four RBIs as the Astros jumped on Yusei Kikuchi early and cruised to the 12-3 win on Friday night.

Álvarez and Jake Meyers hit two-run homers off Kikuchi (7-7) as he tied a career-high by allowing seven runs in a season-low 2 2/3 innings.

Martín Maldonado and Yuli Gurriel also homered, and Carlos Correa and José Altuve each hit a triple to help Houston win its second straight after dropping the previous four.

The Astros scored more runs on Friday night than they managed in those four losses, when they combined for just 10.

“To come home and start the series like that just raises the atmosphere and the mood for everybody,” Alvarez said through a translator.

Manager Dusty Baker was happy to see his team keep padding the lead after the Astros were already up big.

“We hit some balls hard on the road but nothing to show for it, so it was great for us to put up crooked numbers in all those consecutive innings,” Baker said. “Those guys didn’t take their foot off the pedal and that’s how you play, and that’s how I like to watch them play.”

Lance McCullers Jr. (10-4) permitted five hits and two runs with eight strikeouts to get the win after losing his past two starts. He was thrilled to have so much run support.

“It was nice,” he said. “Obviously when our lineup gets going it’s something special. Hopefully we can carry that through this homestand.”

Kyle Seager and Ty France hit solo homers for the Mariners, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

“It starts and ends with starting pitching and tonight Yusei just didn’t have it,” manager Scott Servais said. “They were all over him … just not a very consistent night at all with his stuff.”

There was one on and one out in the first when Correa hit his first triple of the season to make it 1-0. Álvarez followed with a ground out to score Correa.

Chas McCormick walked with one out in the second before the homer by Meyers.

Correa opened Houston’s third with a single, before Álvarez’s home run to center field made it 6-0. The Astros went back-to-back when Gurriel connected on his home run to left center.

Aledmys Díaz doubled and Kikuchi walked Maldonado with two outs to end his night.

There were two outs in the fourth when the Mariners got on the board with Seager’s soaring shot to the second deck in right field.

There were runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the inning when Álvarez hit a ball to left field that a fan reached over the front row to grab, resulting in a ground-rule double because of fan interference. The crew chief called for a review and the call was upheld. Michael Brantley scored on the play to make it 8-1, and Houston added another run on a single by Gurriel. There was one out in the inning when Álvarez scored on a sacrifice fly by McCormick to leave Houston up 10-1.

Maldonado launched his homer off Erik Swanson with no outs in the fifth. Altuve followed with a triple and scored on a groundout by Brantley to pad the lead.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: RHP Casey Sadler was placed on the paternity list on Friday and will miss the series. RHP Yohan Ramirez was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to take his place on the roster.

Astros: 3B Alex Bregman resumed his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday night after an almost two-week pause. Bregman, who has been out since June 17 with a strained left quadriceps, homered with four RBIs in seven innings. Baker said he didn’t know how many games Bregman would need before he can return to Houston.

    PILING ’EM UP

Friday was the first time in franchise history that the Astros scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings. It’s the first time an MLB team has done that since Oakland did it on Sept. 10, 2019, in a 21-7 win over Houston.

LHP Santiago ejected, glove confiscated during Mariners’ win

Seattle reliever Hector Santiago was ejected after he was checked by the umpires as part of baseball’s new sticky substance protocols, and the Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 on Sunday in the resumption of a suspended game.

Santiago was stopped as he exited in the fifth inning. His glove was confiscated, and it was later announced that Santiago had been thrown out.

The 33-year-old left-hander became the first player to be ejected as part of Major League Baseball’s new foreign substance procedure. Major league umpires last week started regular checks of all pitchers for sticky substances used to get a better grip on the balls, but can also increase the spin of the balls and make hitting them more difficult.

Taylor Trammell homered twice for Seattle, which improved to 10-2 in its last 12 games. Paul Sewald got one out for the win, and Kendall Graveman worked the ninth for his seventh save.

The White Sox lost AL MVP José Abreu when he was hit on his left knee by a pitch in the sixth. The team announced the first baseman had a bruised left knee and X-rays were negative.

The teams played 2 1/2 innings Saturday before the game was postponed because of rain.

Trammell connected for his seventh homer in the fifth, and Ty France went deep against Dallas Keuchel in the sixth. Leury García hit an RBI single in the fifth for Chicago, and Yasmani Grandal added a tying sacrifice fly in the sixth.

The Mariners went ahead to stay when Trammell hit a towering drive into the right-field bleachers with two out in the ninth against Liam Hendricks (3-2). Grandal led off the bottom half with a base hit, but Jake Lamb flied out and Yermín Mercedes bounced into a double play.

The teams will play a seven-inning game for the series finale later Sunday.

Keuchel allowed six hits, struck out four and walked one in his first relief appearance since Aug. 6, 2013.

The AL Central-leading White Sox have dropped seven of eight.

Mariners win 3-2, hand Rangers 11th straight road loss

J.P. Crawford and Mitch Haniger homered late, and the Seattle Mariners sent the Texas Rangers to their 11th straight road loss with a 3-2 victory Saturday night.

The Rangers managed four hits in their fifth consecutive defeat overall. They matched the second-longest road skid in team history, an 11-game stretch in April and May 1982. Texas dropped 12 in a row away from home in May and June 2003.

“I think overall a lot of guys are struggling now on offense,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. “It’s unfortunate. I think it gets contagious.”

Crawford hit a solo homer in the seventh inning to break a 1-all tie and Haniger added his 14th of the season in the eighth. The long balls gave the Mariners their season-high third straight victory and their major league-leading 12th one-run win.

Seattle is 12-5 in one-run games, including Friday’s 3-2 victory over Texas.

“That’s cool,” Crawford said. “I didn’t know that.”

Of his homer, he said: “I was just trying to get a little spark for my team in that inning.”

José Godoy singled home Kyle Lewis in the second for Seattle’s first run.

Mariners starter Justin Dunn struck out eight and pitched one-hit ball through 5 2/3 innings to stretch his AL-leading streak of games with three or fewer runs allowed to 15. But he was pulled after allowing his second hit, again failing to make it through the sixth.

Daniel Zamora (1-0) earned his first win since 2018 in his first appearance since being claimed off waivers from the New York Mets on May 22.

“I haven’t pitched a big league game since 2019,” Zamora said after getting four outs. “There was a lot of adrenaline going through me. I think that was part of it all, too.”

He combined with Paul Sewald and Rafael Montero to allow two hits in 3 1/3 innings. Montero earned his seventh save after giving up Nick Solak’s second sacrifice fly of the game in the ninth.

Dunn hit Isaiah Kiner-Falefa with a pitch leading off the fourth, then issued back-to-back walks with one out before Solak’s sacrifice fly tied it at 1.

Mike Foltynewicz (1-5) scattered six hits over seven innings, striking out two, but was done in by Crawford’s second homer of the season.

Woodward said Foltynewicz pitched well enough to win in his second straight seven-inning appearance, but the team wasn’t “scratching and clawing” for runs.

“There’s a few innings where we didn’t put any pressure on them,” the manager said.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: RHP Will Vest returned to the team after his COVID-19-related stay on the injured list. Manager Scott Servais said Vest was scheduled to throw a bullpen Saturday to evaluate his fitness after quarantining in San Diego since May 21. Fellow relievers Kendall Graveman and Drew Steckenrider remain in San Diego under quarantine.

The Mariners put RHP Erik Swanson on the 10-day injured list with a right groin strain and transferred RHP Casey Sadler (right shoulder impingement) to the 60-day IL.

Kaprielian tosses 7 scoreless innings, A’s beat Mariners 6-3

James Kaprielian pitched seven scoreless innings and the Oakland Athletics beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Kaprielian (2-0) surrendered just two hits and two walks, striking out four in his third career start as the A’s snapped a three-game losing streak.

Matt Olson launched his 13th homer of the season and Seth Brown had two hits and two RBIs for Oakland. Ramón Laureano and Matt Chapman also drove in runs.

The A’s jumped on Seattle starter Robert Dugger for two runs in the first inning, including an RBI double by Brown. Dugger (0-1) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Olson’s third-inning homer made it 3-0. He drove in another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly as the A’s pushed ahead 6-0.

Jarred Kelenic, Mitch Haniger and Kyle Seager drove in runs for the Mariners in the eighth inning off Yusmeiro Petit. Jake Diekman came in to record the final four outs and earn his sixth save.

    HEATING UP

Oakland’s Elvis Andrus had two hits following a three-hit performance on Tuesday. The veteran has hit .308 over his last 17 games, raising his season average from .143 to .197.

“I feel a lot better at the plate, especially yesterday,” Andrus said. “I was able to find myself again and feel like myself like before. It’s been a really long, long process for me to be able to just feel comfortable at the plate. Hopefully, yesterday was a day to get me going and just continue to do that for quite a few months.”

    HEAVY HEARTS

Before the game, the teams held a moment of silence for the victims of a mass shooting Wednesday morning at a rail yard in San Jose. The shooter killed eight people before taking his own life.

“It’s awful,” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. “And there are way too many of these things. It always hits home. It hits home more so when you are at home. It’s just awful. We play a baseball game today but this certainly is way more important than that. Hearts out to the families that have lost loved ones.”

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: LHP Marco Gonzales, out since late April with a left forearm strain, was expected to throw a simulated game of 40 to 45 pitches this week. He could return to the rotation as soon as next week, though the team will be cautious. “You will not see him go out there and go six innings and 95 pitches the first time,” manager Scott Servais said. “No chance. We will slow play it and build him up as we go along.”

Athletics: DH Mitch Moreland (rib) could return before the end of Oakland’s current homestand. Moreland has taken batting practice and fielded ground balls in recent days. “He’s turned a corner and is doing everything at this point,” Melvin said.

Tatis hits 50th career homer, Padres rout Mariners 16-1

Fernando Tatis Jr. has a knack for coming up big after missing time with injury and illness.

In two games back after being sidelined by COVID-19, the star shortstop has homered twice, driven in six runs and made history.

Tatis became the fastest shortstop in history to hit 50 home runs, punctuating his three-run shot with a bat flip, and made another spectacular defensive play for the San Diego Padres, who routed the Seattle Mariners 16-1 Friday night for their seventh straight win.

“Obviously he’s a special player,” manager Jayce Tingler said. “He did a little bit of that in spring training, had some time down from injury and right when he’d come back he was able to square some balls up and do some special things.”

After missing eight games with COVID-19, the 22-year-old superstar returned Wednesday and had a homer among his four hits in a 3-0 win against Colorado.

“The good thing is, he looks fresh, he looks crisp, he hasn’t lost any of his rhythm and timing,” Tingler said. “I think on all aspects, offensively, defensively, the way he’s moving around the field. There’s very few guys you’re around over time that can take a little bit of time down and truly not miss a beat. That’s how it looks for him right now, which is a plus quality.”

Early in the season, Tatis homered in his first game back from a stint on the 10-day injured list due to a partially dislocated left shoulder,

Jake Cronenworth homered, doubled and drove in five runs, and Chris Paddack (2-3) threw six strong innings for the Padres, who have won 10 of 11 overall. Paddack and two relievers combined on a four-hitter against the Mariners, who have been no-hit twice this season, most recently by Detroit’s Spencer Turnbull on Tuesday night.

Tatis, playing in his 171st career game, watched his opposite-field homer off Chris Flexen sail over the home run deck in right field and, holding his bat by the barrel, twirled it aside before beginning his trot. His team-leading 11th this year, it gave the Padres a 7-1 lead with one out in the second inning.

Tatis tied Ryan Braun for the fifth-fastest player overall to reach 50 homers.

The Padres star also homered Wednesday in a 3-0 win over Colorado in his first game back after missing eight games after testing positive for COVID-19.

Tatis finished with four RBIs. He also made a spectacular play in the fifth when he avoided a collision with Jorge Mateo in shallow center to catch Jarred Kelenic’s popup and then doubled Eric Campbell off first to end the inning. Tatis laughed as he ran off the field.

Seattle lost its fourth straight game and had a setback off the field. The Mariners placed four relievers on the COVID-19 injured list before the game after reporting a positive test within the team.

The Mariners did not identify who tested positive. Placed on the IL were right-handers Robert Dugger, Will Vest and Drew Steckenrider and left-hander Anthony Misiewicz.

Paddack had his longest outing of the year, holding the Mariners to one run and three hits while striking out six and walking two. He allowed Mitch Haniger’s double and Kyle Seager’s RBI single with one out in the first and then didn’t allow another runner to reach scoring position the rest of his outing.

Cronenworth hit a two-run double in the fifth and a three-run homer in the seventh, his fifth.

Trent Grisham hit his fourth leadoff homer and fifth overall for the Padres, who scored four runs in each of the first two innings off Flexen (4-2). Eric Hosmer added a two-run single and Tommy Pham an RBI basehit in the first.

Pham had an RBI triple with two outs in the second to chase Flexen. The right-hander allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 1 2/3 innings.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Mariners: As planned, RHP Keynan Middleton (strained right biceps) was activated from the 10-day IL. … In corresponding moves for the four players placed on the COVID-19 IL, LHP Aaron Fletcher and RHPs Wyatt Mills and Yohan Ramírez were recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and the contract of INF Eric Campbell was selected from Tacoma.

Padres: 3B Manny Machado got the night off because he’s been dealing with nicks and bruises, Tingler said.

    UP NEXT

LHP Justus Sheffield (3-3, 4.62) of the Mariners is scheduled to start Saturday night against rookie LHP Ryan Weathers (2-1, 1.37).
