Justin Thomas calls out PGA Championship beer prices: ‘Gotta treat the fans better than that!’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sports venues are notorious for their overpriced food and drink costs, but 2017 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas draws the line at pricey beer.

Thomas, who is seeking his second major championship this week, responded in shock to a story in Golfweek about the pricing fans can expect to see after walking through the gates at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: PIMENTO CHEESE SANDWICHES, PUBLIC PHONES AND LUSH GREENSMARK GOLF’S PREMIER EVENT

“$18(!!!!!!) for a beer… uhhhh what. Gotta treat the fans better than that!” Thomas wrote on Twitter.

According to the article, fans can expect to pay between $18-19 a beer, $13 for a glass of wine and between $14-16 for a salad or burger.

One social media user asked Thomas where he thought the winner’s purse was being paid out from, to which Thomas pointed out: apparently not the beer!

“Tv deals, ticket sales, corporate sponsors, etc. from the looks of it, if the concession stands were factored into our purse we would be playing for $15 million.”

The prices at the PGA Championship are starkly different from that of the Masters, the first major tournament of the year, where fans can enjoy cold beer and the infamous pimento cheese sandwich for just $6.50.

In fact, all the menu items at the Masters are surprisingly affordable. Imported beers for $5, a cup of coffee for $1.50, egg salad sandwich for $1.50 — just to name a few.

One fan went viral at the Masters this year for his impressive beer cup stack. With the prices at Southern Hills, such a scene would be rather rare.

Gary Player’s son sorry for marketing stunt that got him banned from Masters

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Wayne Player will be able to watch The Masters again, but he will just have to do it from home.

That’s because the son of Gary Player has been banned from Augusta National and therefore, The Masters, after a marketing stunt gone wrong.

It happened last year when The Masters was honoring Lee Elder as the first black man to ever compete in a major. As Elder was being honored, Wayne Player obnoxiously promoted a golf ball brand right on the screen. Wayne Player served as his father’s caddy.

Elder died last year at the age of 87, but an apologetic Wayne Player said he had a chance to make amends with Elder first. He admitted the timing of the marketing tactic was way off, in an interview with Golf Digest.

“Well, they say there’s no such thing as bad publicity,” Player said. “I found out that that’s not quite true. I had probably 50 texts after that, 40 of them said I’m a marketing genius, 10 were like, ‘What the hell were you thinking?’ It wasn’t premeditated, but it was a tacky thing.”

He said Elder expressed no hard feelings. Far from it.

“I called and I said, ‘You know, Lee, I love you guys.’ You know, everyone said I was disrespectful for a special moment in time,” Player said. “I said I was sorry, and I didn’t mean to take up his special time. And he said, ‘Wayne, you know how much I love you. Right?’ It didn’t cross his mind. That’s important for people to know.”

Tiger Woods congratulates Scottie Scheffler on Masters win: ‘It’s been a special run’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tiger Woods congratulated Scottie Scheffler on his Masters victory Sunday.

Woods, who completed his first major tournament since 2020, tweeted about the young golf pro’s victory. Scheffler narrowly defeated Rory McIlroy to pick up his first major title and green jacket.

“I didn’t play my best out there, but just to have the support and appreciation from all the fans, I don’t think words can describe that,” Woods tweeted. “Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on an outstanding win. It’s been a special run.”

Woods made the cut after the first two rounds and, essentially, the entire world was watching him. The final two rounds weren’t ideal as he shot back-to-back 78s, his highest scores ever at Augusta. He finished 13-over par and toward the bottom of the leader board when his fourth round was over.

It was his first event against high-level competition since he was seriously injured in a February 2021 car crash. Woods was in range of the leaders after the first round, shooting a surprising 71, which put him 1-under par for the course in the first round. He shot a second-round 74. He was just 1-over par going into the third round and he made the cut too, giving fans two extra days to see what he could do.

Jon Rahm, who partnered with Woods for the final round, saw just how much the 46-year-old was struggling on the final day.

TIGER WOODS HAS IMPRESSIVE MASTERS EVEN WITHOUT GREEN JACKET

“You can just tell that his leg is just not quite up there yet,” Rahm said, via TigerWoods.com. “I’ve seen him in the truck. He is limping in the truck. He is limping on the course. Obviously, he is trying very hard to play, but it’s not easy to walk up and down those hills. At the end you can just tell that his leg and his body are just not used to walking this much, right?

“I believe if at home he can walk and get strength up and stamina in that sense, he will be able to be competitive again. This is the hardest walk all year. He will be able to go somewhere where it’s a little easier to walk. It won’t be as long, and I believe he’ll be able to contend.”

Woods said afterward he has his sights on The Open Championship in July and wasn’t exactly ruling out playing the PGA Championship in May.

For Scheffler, he’s been on a complete tear since the start of the New Year.

He picked up his first PGA Tour victory at the WM Phoenix Open in February. In March, he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. He took over the No. 1 golf ranking ahead of the Masters and finished the event with the green jacket.

Masters 2022: Both Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa hole-out on 18 from the same bunker

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

While they were both fighting for position up top The Masters’ leaderboard, Rory McIlroy and Collin Morikawa decided it was the perfect time for a hole-out — from the same bunker. The call could’ve been better on the broadcast, but we’ll have to let that go.

McIlroy was momentarily able to apply pressure onto our leader Scottie Scheffler on this shot, which brought his lead down to just three strokes. A final round of 64 for Rory that was the most impressive thing we saw on 18 all day until Collin Morikawa responded 30 seconds later.

With these two clutch shots out 18th’s bunker, Scottie Scheffler has a couple tricky holes left to finish off his first green jacket. Will he finish the deal? If he doesn’t we’ll go back to Rory’s play down the stretch that made it happen.

Tiger Woods has impressive Masters even without green jacket

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Against all odds, Tiger Woods played all 72 holes at the Masters this weekend in his first tournament at Augusta National in nearly two years.

Woods made the cut after the first two rounds and essentially the entire world watching him. The final two rounds weren’t ideal as he shot back-to-back 78s which were the highest scores he’s ever shot at Augusta. He finished 13-over par and toward the bottom of the leaderboard when his fourth round was over.

But for Woods, just getting through all four days was an accomplishment in its own right.

“It was an unbelievable feeling to just have the patrons and the support out there,” he said after his final round. “I wasn’t exactly playing my best out there but just to have the support out there and just the appreciation from all the fans … I don’t think words can really describe that given where I was a little over a year ago and what my prospects were at that time, to end up here and being able to play all four rounds … even a month ago I didn’t know if I could pull this off. I think it was a positive. I got some work to do and looking forward to it.”

Woods admitted he has good and bad days in his recovery but was thankful for the people around him who were helping him at this point.

“It’s hard. I have those days where I just don’t want to do anything. It just hurts. As I’ve alluded to earlier, I’ve had a great team around me that are super positive and motivated me and have helped me around,” he said. “Those days are tough. The days I feel good, those are easy days. But there have been more and more tough days than easy days. I just got to work through it.

TIGER WOODS WRAPS UP FIRST MASTERS APPEARANCE SINCE 2020, THANKS PATRONS FOR SUPPORT

“Just like golf, in order to get better you just gotta go out there and put in the time. I have. The hard parts are the recovery sessions. Pop in those ice baths a number of times a day. Those do really suck but it works. Just to have the support around me, I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Woods was in range of the leaders after the first round, shooting a surprising 71 which put him 1-under par for the course in the first round. He shot a second-round 74. He was just 1-over par going into the third round and he made the cut too, giving fans two extra days to see what he can do.

Some struggles in the final two days put him out of contention.

But just Woods’ ability to show up and play all four days was inspiring for some.

“Tiger showed this week why he is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He hasn’t played in over 500 days and was able to walk all week at the hilliest course that he will see all year while being inside the top 20 for two days,” Korn Ferry Tour star Ryan McCormick told Fox News Digital on Sunday.

“With some more competitive reps, he will be much sharper the next time he competes at a major. I’m sure he has his eyes on The Open at St. Andrews this summer.”

It had been about 17 months since Woods played against other high-level PGA Tour competition. He had participated in the parent-child PNC Championship in December 2021 and finished second to John Daly and his son, John II.

TIGER WOODS TARGETS PLAYING THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP IN JULY AFTER MASTERS RETURN

Woods has said he would never play a full golf schedule again and reiterated that again to Sky Sports. He said he may not be able to play the PGA Championship next month, but has his eyes on St. Andrews in Scotland later this summer for The Open Championship.

“I won’t be playing a full schedule ever again. It’ll just be the big events. I don’t know if ill play Southern Hills or not but I am looking forward to St. Andrews. It’s something that’s near and dear to my heart,” Woods said.

“I’ve won two Opens there. It’s the home of golf. It’s my favorite golf course in the world. I will be there for that one. But anything in between that, I don’t know. I will try. I will try to get ready this week for Southern Hills and we’ll see what this body will be able to do.”

Tiger Woods waves to the crowd on the 18th green after finishing his round during the final round of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club on April 10, 2022 in Augusta, Georgia. (Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

Woods had won the Masters in 2019, completing the biggest comeback the sports world has ever seen.

In February 2021, he was seriously injured in a Los Angeles car crash. He shattered bones in his right leg and needed a rod in his tibia and screws and pins in his ankle to stabilize the injuries.

Last summer and fall, Woods was seen on the golf course with a black brace over his leg as he practiced taking some swings and watching his son, Charlie, compete at some junior events.

It appears as though Woods has proved to himself he could walk the toughest courses. With three major tournaments to go in the golf season, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Woods ramp up a bit more in order to play and compete with some of the sport’s best.

Scheffler didn’t get rattled even as McIlroy started to gain some steam.
