Tyrann Mathieu to sign with Saints: reports

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tyrann Mathieu is reportedly set to sign a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints this week after spending three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs and winning one Super Bowl.

The deal is expected to be finalized later this week, the NFL Network reported. Mathieu would return to the city where he was born and the state where he excelled as a college football player at LSU.

The Saints have not officially announced the deal. The team had been linked to Mathieu ahead of the NFL Draft. ESPN reported Mathieu had also spoken with the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to multiple reports, the deal is worth $33 million with about $18 million guaranteed.

New Orleans didn’t select a safety during the draft. The team lost Malcolm Jenkins and Marcus Williams during the offseason. Jenkins retired in the offseason, and Williams signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

Mathieu was an All-American at LSU and won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the best defensive player in college football during the season.

He was a third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 and spent five years with the Cardinals. He played for the Houston Texans in 2018 and played for the Chiefs from 2019 to 2021.

Mathieu is a three-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro selection. He was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame All-2010s Team.

Super Bowl LIV: How the Kansas City Chiefs constructed their roster

Perhaps the most successful coach in NFL history, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, has said that building a roster is “a very challenging task” given the amount of talent available and the particular skill set teams need in both the short and long term.

Roster-building may be both an art and a science, but the Kansas City Chiefs have managed to build a Super Bowl-worthy roster in a variety of different ways.

The large majority of the 2019 Chiefs roster was acquired since head coach Andy Reid took over the team in 2013, according to the Kansas City Star. Only one player, punter Dustin Colquitt, is a holdover from the previous regime, having been drafted in 2005.

Since Reid has been there, 16 players of the 53 on the roster were acquired in the NFL draft, including 2013 draft picks tight end Travis Kelce and offensive lineman Eric Fisher.

Franchise stalwarts such as quarterback Patrick Mahomes, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and defensive tackle Chris Jones were also acquired in the draft. Mahomes and Jones were early-round selections (1st and 2nd, respectively), highlighting the importance of making the right decision.

It’s often said that it “takes a village to raise a child” and the same can be said for building an NFL roster. Many players on the 2019 Chiefs roster were acquired by previous general manager John Dorsey, including players like Jones, Hill, Kelce and offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz, to name a few. Current general manager Brett Veach took over for Dorsey in 2017.

Given that, most of the offseason attention in the NFL turns to the draft, but that’s just one part of the team-building process. Free agency, acquiring players in trades and signing players who weren’t drafted are also crucial parts of building a team.

Four players on the 53-man roster were signed as undrafted free agents, including Alex Brown, who initially was with San Francisco before being cut. Free agency has also understandably played a large role in the explosive Chiefs offense.

Some of the more high-profile signings include wide receiver Sammy Watkins, running backs LeSean McCoy and Damien Williams and Schwartz.

HOW DID THE CHIEFS GET TO SUPER BOWL LIV? A LOOK BACK AT THEIR 2019 SEASON

Conversely, some of the more well-known players on defense (excluding Jones) were not drafted by the Chiefs and were acquired in trades and in free agency, notably defensive end Frank Clark and safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Mathieu signed a three-year, $42 million deal with Kansas City in March after playing a solid, if not spectacular season for the Houston Texans in 2018. Considered a troubled player when he was drafted out of LSU in 2013 by the Arizona Cardinals, the safety has taken on a leadership role in the Chiefs’ locker room and was named to his second All-Pro team in 2019.

SUPER BOWL LIV: 5 X-FACTORS ON THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

Frank Clark was traded to Kansas City in April 2019 from the Seattle Seahawks and the 26-year-old has added a much-need pass rush and swagger to the Kanas City defense. Named to his first Pro Bowl this year, Clark registered eight sacks, caused 3 forced fumbles and even recorded an interception, when he picked off Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew in a 40-26 win.

The amount of money spent on each position can also influence how successful (or not) a team is during the season. The Chiefs have spent more than $107 million on the offensive side of the ball, according to OverTheCap. By contrast, the defense accounts for nearly $82 million in spending.

How did the Chiefs get to Super Bowl LIV? A look back at their 2019 season

The Kansas City Chiefs came within moments of making the Super Bowl last year, but fell to the New England Patriots in the waning seconds of the AFC Championship.

The Chiefs turned their luck around this season, earning their first Super Bowl berth in 50 years after defeating the Tennessee Titans in this season’s AFC title game. However, it was a long road back that was nearly derailed in the middle of the season due to a Patrick Mahomes injury.

But even before the Chiefs stepped onto the field in Week 1, the organization made some key moves.

First, the team traded Dee Ford – who was responsible for a crucial penalty against the Patriots in the playoffs – to the San Francisco 49ers. The team then traded for Frank Clark from the Seattle Seahawks to bolster the defensive line and then acquired a draft pick that resulted in Mecole Hardman’s selection.

Kansas City also acquired LeSean McCoy, Damien Wilson, Alex Okafor and Tyrann Mathieu in the offseason. The Chiefs selected Hardman and Juan Thornhill among others to bolster their roster.

The Chiefs’ high-flying offense was back and it appeared that Mahomes was still in MVP mode going into his second full season as the team’s starting quarterback. He threw three touchdown passes in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, Tyreek Hill got hurt in that game and missed the next four with an injury. Kansas City was still able to start the season winning their first four games.

Once September turned to October, Kansas City lost their first two games to start the month both of them with wild card potential teams – the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans. Things would get more serious the following week.

Against the Denver Broncos, Mahomes would go down with a knee injury. He appeared to have dislocated his kneecap during the game and then popped it back in.

Matt Moore took over for Mahomes in the interim. He played in games against the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. He went 1-1 in that span and after just two weeks Mahomes was back in the starting role.

He came back to play the Tennessee Titans in Week 10. He was 36-for-50 with 446 passing yards and three touchdown passes. The Chiefs lost the game, 35-32. That would be their final loss of the season.

Kansas City won their final six games of the season on their way to claiming the AFC West division title and a first-round bye in the playoffs. One of the victories included a 23-16 defeat of the Patriots.

Mahomes finished those final six games with 1,405 passing yards and eight touchdown passes.

The Chiefs’ first game back after a bye didn’t start off so great. Kansas City went down by 24 points in the start of the second quarter against the Texans. Not all was lost. Mahomes led the Chiefs on a furious comeback, throwing four touchdown passes in the second quarter – which hadn’t been done since the days of Doug Williams. Three of the touchdown passes came to Travis Kelce and one went to Damien Williams. Kansas City won the game, 51-31.

The Chiefs then had the opportunity to exact revenge on the Titans. Tennessee had beaten them in the regular season and the last time they played each other in the playoffs. The Titans had also taken two of the top three teams in the AFC going into the game. It was nothing but a thing for Kansas City. The Chiefs won the game, 35-24, behind four total touchdowns from Mahomes and a rushing touchdown from Damien Williams.

Kobe Bryant’s death has profound effect on Super Bowl LIV’s stars

Kobe Bryant’s death weighed heavy at Super Bowl LIV’s opening night in Miami on Monday.

Before festivities got underway at Marlins Park, there was a moment of silence held for Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and the seven other victims of the helicopter crash on a California mountainside.

SUPER BOWL LIV: CHIEFS’ TYREEK HILL REFLECTS ON ‘ROUGH PATCH’ LAST YEAR

Bryant’s death had an impact on many of the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers players who were talking to the media less than a week before the two teams match up for the NFL title.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was up first.

“I wasn’t lucky enough to get to meet Kobe, but the impact he made in my life … I mean it was huge. The way he was able to go about every single day when I was a kid and the work ethic and the intensity he had every day to be great every single day. And even to this day, I mean I still watch videos of him on YouTube the day before games and just listen to him talk and how he puts everything in perspective of being great on and off the field with his kids and business ventures and obviously his play. I mean it’s a tragic thing. Prayers to him and his family. But he made a huge impact in my life for sure.”

Chiefs offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz, who was raised in Southern California, discussed Bryant’s death.

“Obviously growing up in LA you watch a lot of Lakers and a lot of Kobe and he’s kinda the guy that you follow when you are growing up. It was crazy to hear the news and you hope it’s just one of those fake rumors and you don’t want to see it confirmed. It’s really sad. And obviously for his family, his wife and his other daughters and for the other families of the people in the helicopter. It’s obviously just a sad day for everybody.”

49ERS’ MIKE PERSON FINALLY GETS CHANCE TO PLAY IN BIG GAME AFTER 3 MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

The Chiefs’ Tyrann Mathieu said it was “shocking” to learn of Bryant’s death.

“Really so sad for his family, especially his wife and their daughters. You know, it’s unimaginable. I never thought in my lifetime that a guy like Kobe Bryant wouldn’t be here. I thought guys like him would live forever. He done so many great things on and off the court. And off the court as well, I think he was really one of those guys who inspired a lot of people.”

The 49ers’ Richard Sherman also reflected on the NBA legend’s death.

“It’s unfortunate. It’s really sad. He was a friend of mine. He was a mentor. He meant a lot to this world and he made a positive impact. There’s nothing I can really say to qualify his impact on myself and on others. I just know how he would’ve, you know, wanted me to take this and to react especially in this moment and in this game. I was really sad yesterday and I was sad this morning. I was kind of down. And then I thought about what he would tell me. He would tell me, ‘stop being a baby and man up’ and play it and do it in his honor and win this game for him. And that’s what we’re going to try to do.

Super Bowl LIV: Chiefs arrive in Miami wearing tropical attire

The Kansas City Chiefs arrived in Miami for Super Bowl LIV wearing Hawaiian shirts in homage to coach Andy Reid who has mostly sported the tropical attire when arriving in Florida or Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.

This time, Reid will get a second crack at a Super Bowl ring when the Chiefs play the San Francisco 49ers. Some players, including Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, were wearing red and white floral outfits. Reid’s only appearance in a Super Bowl was during the 2004 season when he led the Philadelphia Eagles to the title game only to lose to the New England Patriots.

Once the Chiefs won the AFC Championship, NFL fans believed that Reid was a perfect fit for Miami.

Reid talked about facing the 49ers last week.

SUPER BOWL LIV: 5 X-FACTORS ON THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

“I’ve had a chance to look at them,” Reid said. “I spent the morning doing that. I know that they’re a good, solid football team. They play hard and aggressive. You saw that last night in playing against a good Green Bay team. They do a variety of things on both sides of the ball. They can run it and they can pass it on the offensive side. On defense, they have a variety of things that they throw at you from a defensive standpoint. Solid on special teams. All in all, it’s a good football team. Well-coached, very well-coached.”

He also compared the 2019 Chiefs team to that of the 2004 Eagles team.

“I had great leaders on that team, future Hall of Famers — at least one of them is in now,” he said. “I was fortunate that way and I feel like I have future Hall of Famers on this team here. Hall of Fame leaders, too. There’s a difference. We have some real good leaders on this team. Similarities are with some good players. I’ve been blessed in that way as a head coach.”

The Chiefs and 49ers play for the title on Feb. 2.
