Tiger Woods congratulates Justin Thomas on PGA Championship win: ‘Once he got his shot he didn’t look back’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tiger Woods congratulated Justin Thomas on the golfer’s PGA Championship victory over Will Zalatoris on Sunday night.

Thomas fought to get into position of forcing a playoff and after Mito Pereira collapsed on the 18th hole, he was put into the playoff against Zalatoris at Southern Hills. Thomas had two birdies and saved par in the three-hole format and was holding the Wanamaker Trophy at the end of the day.

“Big congrats to @JustinThomas34! He kept himself in this championship until the very end and once he got his shot he didn’t look back. Thanks to Tulsa and the @PGAChampionship for a great week,” Woods wrote.

Woods and Thomas developed a friendship over the last few years and the two kept in touch while Woods recovered from the devastating leg injury he suffered in a 2021 car crash.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP: MITO PEREIRA ADDRESSES COLLAPSE ON 18TH HOLE

Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship after the third round. He recorded a 79 in Saturday’s third round which was his worst score ever in a PGA championship. He recorded seven bogeys and one double bogey during the round with the only bright spot being a birdie on the 15th hole.

In the three-round playoff format, Thomas finished with two birdies and a par for his second PGA Championship victory.

Thomas and Zalatoris both stayed within range of the leader Mito Pereira all day and capitalized when Pereira had a tough go at the 18th hole. Pereira failed to keep the lead and missed out on a chance to win the tournament in the playoff.

Thomas and Zalatoris started the first playoff hole with birdies. On the second hole, Thomas went up one stroke with a birdie on the second playoff hole. Zalatoris saved par.

Tiger Woods struggles at the PGA Championship

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Tiger’s round included 7 bogeys and 1 double bogey. The one bright spot was the birdie on 15 that saved him from shooting 80. Tiger clearly did not look healthy. His gait walking downhill looked painful. He struggled getting into and out of traps.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Fans hoping to get a look at Tiger Woods’ play at the PGA Championship Friday were not pleased when ESPN’s broadcast of the tournament chose an unusual camera angle for a critical putt on the 13th hole.

Woods looked like he was in danger of missing the cut in the second round at Southern Hills after a bogey on the front nine followed by a double bogey on the 11th. Then, on the 13th, he had a chance to make a short birdie.

Woods began the third round by holing a 15-foot par putt. But on the second hole, Woods put his tee shot into a meandering stream. It was his first penalty shot of the week. He wound up with a bogey and was 4 over for the tournament. A conventional par on No. 3 left him 1 over for the round.

Woods made the cut for the second straight event since he suffered a devastating leg injury in a 2021 car crash in Los Angeles. He made the cut at the Masters but fell off the lead in the third round.

He needed a gutsy performance in the second round just to get above the cut line.

Woods had a birdie and a bogey through the front nine and would double bogey the 11th, putting any chance of making the weekend in doubt. However, he would dig deep and birdie the 13th and the 16th and save par every other hole to finish 1-under in round 2.

Jordan Spieth shot a 69 in the second round. He came on strong with three birdies on the back nine and two bogeys. He finished 1-over par for the first two rounds and will also be continuing his mission for a career Grand Slam at Southern Hills.

So, what went wrong with Woods? He pointed to his injured leg.

“It’s a little sore… My leg is not feeling as good as I would like it to be. We’ll start the recovery process and get after it tomorrow,” Woods told reporters after the round, via the PGA Tour.

Woods said everything about his leg, right now, was hurting him.

“I just can’t load it. Loading hurts, pressing off it hurts, and walking hurts, and twisting hurts.”

Woods was playing only his second major event since he suffered the devastating leg injury in a Los Angeles car crash. He nearly had to have his leg amputated.

He said earlier in the week he was feeling stronger.

His 74 was his highest score at the PGA Championship since 2015 at Whistling Straits. He is tied for 109th.

“I did not hit a lot of good iron shots. I drove it well, but my iron shots were not very good. I didn’t get the ball very close,” Woods added. “I got off to a great start but didn’t keep it going. I really didn’t give myself any looks for birdie. I was struggling trying to get the ball on the green, and I missed quite a few iron shots both ways. It was a frustrating day.”

Spieth shot a 72 after a strong start when the group teed off on the back nine. He was 1-under through the first five holes but bogeyed three of the final four holes on the back nine. He would add one more birdie and one more bogey on the front nine before heading into the clubhouse.

PGA Championship: Anirban Lahiri’s whirlwind week includes birth of child, practice round with Tiger Woods

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Anirban Lahiri had a whirlwind of a week leading up to the PGA Championship.

Lahiri, who has most of his professional wins on the Asian Tour, was home earlier in the week expecting the arrival of his newborn son, putting any chance of him making it to the major in doubt. However, his second child arrived early, and it gave him enough time to get to Southern Hills in Oklahoma.

I made a mental note that if Avyaan came any later than Tuesday morning, I would have to withdraw,” he said, via The Times of India. “The greatest moment until the last couple of days ago was when our daughter came into our lives, and it trumps anything that I can accomplish on this golf course.

“I’m so glad I was there with my wife when my boy came. Avyaan did arrive early… He was due this coming Sunday, and it always looked like he was going to come early.”

Lahiri arrived for a practice round on Wednesday and little did he know he was practicing with Tiger Woods.

“I actually haven’t played much golf with him, so to actually go out and play nine holes, kind of have a chill day was a lot of fun. He was super relaxed and very friendly.”

Woods will be playing his second event since suffering a devastating leg injury in a 2021 car crash. He said earlier in the week his lower body was feeling stronger.

Woods, Spieth and McIlroy are grouped together in the first two rounds.

Noticeably missing are Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau.

Mickelson, the defending champion, bowed out of the tournament after catching flak for his comments about Saudi Arabia and why he found LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed rival league, to be a good opportunity, criticizing the PGA Tour in the process.

He hasn’t played a tournament since February.

DeChambeau is dealing with a wrist injury and won’t be able to compete in the major tournament. He practiced at Southern Hills for two days before pulling out.

According to PGA Tour.com, the weather could play a big part in who wins the major. Gusts are expected to reach up to 30 mph in the first three rounds and still reach up to 20 mph Sunday. Temperatures to start the tournament could reach into the 90s and then fall into the 70s by the end.

The first group will feature John Daly, Shaun Micheel and Y.E. Yang. They will begin the tournament, teeing off at 8 a.m. ET.

    How to watch

Golf fans will be able to watch the PGA Championship on ESPN and CBS. The first two rounds will air solely on ESPN on Thursday and Friday with CBS taking over the coverage on Saturday and Sunday afternoons into the evening.
