McConnell makes surprise trip to meet Zelenskyy in Ukraine

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made a surprise visit to Ukraine where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

Zelenskyy’s administration announced the visit on social media and posted pictures of the meetings.

RUSSIA WILL MANIPULATE KHERSON ELECTION RESULTS TO SUPPORT LEAVING UKRAINE, UK SAYS

“The president ended a meeting with influential American Republican senators. And the main thing is true friends of Ukraine,” Andrij Sybiha, a member of Zelenskyy’s administration, posted on Facebook Saturday.

The post touted solid bipartisan support from “American friends” in Ukraine’s ongoing fight to defeat the Russian invasion that will soon be approaching three months.

McConnell was accompanied by fellow GOP senators John Barrasso of Wyoming, Susan Collins of Maine and John Cornyn of Texas. Their offices did not immediately respond to Fox News’ requests for comments.

The visit comes as the Senate is weighing $40 billion in additional aid to Ukraine to help the country defeat Russia. Both McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wanted the package passed immediately, but Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., held up the vote over concerns the money needs oversight.

HOUSE PASSES $40 BILLION UKRAINIAN AID PACKAGE

“My oath of office is to the U.S. Constitution, not to any foreign nation,” Paul tweeted Thursday after he single-handed delayed a unanimous consent request to fast-track the bipartisan aid passage.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., last week visited Zelenskyy in Ukraine. The House on Tuesday passed the $40 billion Ukraine legislation with a strong bipartisan vote of 368-57 and sent the bill to the Senate.

Despite the initial delay in the Senate, Zelenskyy’s administration expressed optimism the $40 billion package will be decided next week.

Rand Paul-Mayorkas disinfo battle suggests ‘collapse of liberal church of government’: Bongino

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sen. Rand Paul’s sparring with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over the new “Disinformation Governance Board” Thursday foreshadows a collapse of the left’s “Church of Government,” conservative radio host Dan Bongino said.

Bongino suggested on “The Dan Bongino Show” that Mayorkas’ evasive responses to the Kentucky Republican regarding alleged coronavirus-related disinformation shows the secretary knows forthcoming health data may not be on his side, and could thereby doom Democrats’ prospects.

“Folks they’re getting ready for some really, really bad long-term data that’s about to come out about how badly the government the left worships botched the response to COVID,” the host of Fox News’ “Unfiltered” said.

During a Senate hearing, Paul pressed Mayorkas on whether the disinformation board would label his own research and claims about the inefficacy of face masks or the potency of natural immunity to coronavirus.

BO SNERDLEY BLASTS ‘INSIDIOUS’ SCOTUS LEAK

“I’ve said a million times that cloth masks don’t work. YouTube takes me down. They’re a private company I can have that beef with them — What about you?” Paul asked.

Mayorkas replied that DHS “are not the public health experts to make those determinations” – and in a follow-up, would not directly answer Paul whether “public health” would be a purview of the board.

On his program, Bongino explained how the exchange reveals administration concerns the public will learn the truth about the economic, social and mental-health-related fallout from its handling of the pandemic.

“You know the liberal church of government’s about to burn to the ground, as longitudinal research starts to come out as we distance ourselves more and more from the initial stages of this pandemic,” Bongino said.

He added that Americans are likely to be shocked by the true data on some of Paul’s concerns, which he suggested have been suppressed and warned could be subject to arbitration by the disinformation board.

“[It]’s going to show that outside of the direct illness’ effects… on the human body, that a lot of the damage done outside the direct effects was done by government, and the church of liberalism is going to take an enormous, enormous shot,” he predicted. “You can’t tell people on one hand that government’s going to the cure to all their problems — when a problem the entire globe just went through wasn’t isolated to one country this coronavirus outbreak.”

RAND PAUL SPARS WITH MAYORKAS OVER DISINFORMATION BOARD

    Bongino (Fox News)

Bongino said even left-leaning researchers will be unable to deny the damage done by shutdowns and other policies, which explains the need for the Biden administration to set up the board.

According to Bongino, this is likely why Mayorkas refused to give Paul a straight answer on whether the new “ministry” will analyze the public health space.

The former Secret Service agent went on to note the disinformation board was not enacted under the purview of regulatory agencies like FCC or HHS, but under DHS which has law enforcement authority.

“[Do] you think that was by accident?” he asked, going on to offer a hypothetical situation in which someone is accused of “causing a national security problem in the United States” under the guise of protecting public health.

Rand Paul grills Mayorkas on disinformation: ‘I don’t trust government to figure out what the truth is’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., challenged Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his department’s newly-announced Disinformation Governance Board, asserting that the American people do not need the federal government to tell them what the truth is.

Paul specifically pointed to claims that he has made about the COVID-19 pandemic that have not been in line with administration policies.

SEN. RAND PAUL: FAUCI IS AGAINST EVERYTHING THAT AMERICA STANDS FOR

“I’ve said a million times that cloth masks don’t work. YouTube takes me down. They’re a private company I can have that beef with him. What about you? You’re going to look at that? I often say that natural immunity from having had the infection is equal to the vaccine or better. You’re going to take that down?”

In recent months, experts have said cloth masks were not very effective in combating COVID-19, yet mask mandates continued in many schools, and until recently on public transportation, with cloth masks being acceptable coverings. Other policies that have required vaccination or testing have failed to account for immunity from previous infection.

“Are you going to put information out there saying that I’m spreading disinformation?” Paul asked.

Mayorkas stated that his agency’s staff “are not the public’s health experts to make those determinations.”

“So public health won’t be part of the Disinformation Governance Board? No COVID disinformation? Yes or no?” Paul pressed.

Mayorkas would not answer, claiming that Paul was giving him “vague” hypothetical situations. Paul claimed that his examples were “very specific.” Mayorkas then gave a situation of his own in which he believes it would be appropriate for the government to get involved.

“‘Do not under any circumstances accept the vaccine at a FEMA overseeing vaccination center because they are actually peddling fentanyl,'” Mayorkas said, putting forth an example of a dangerous false claim about COVID-19 vaccines.

“Now, should I sit back and take that, or should I actually disseminate accurate information?” he asked. “That’s what we’re doing, what we would do. Should FEMA issue accurate information that the vaccinations that we are administering in the sites that we oversee actually are the COVID-19 vaccines?”

SEN. PAUL CELEBRATES END TO MAKS MANDATE AS HE ARRIVES FOR FIRST FLIGHT SINCE RULING: ‘HAPPY DAY!’

Paul disagreed with the idea that Americans need the government to do this for them.

“I have a greater respect for the American people than you do. I think the American people can figure out the truth,” the senator said. “And if you think the American people need to be told there’s not fentanyl in the vaccination, feel free to say it. But the thing is, is if you are going to go around saying that you’re the arbiter of information and of disinformation, I think you have no clue. And you don’t have the perspective of history knowing that disinformation, the largest progenitor of disinformation in our history, has probably been the U.S. government.”

That last comment was in line with what Paul said earlier, about the U.S. government having a history of spreading disinformation.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

“Do you know, the greatest propagator of disinformation in the history of the world is? The U.S. government,” Paul said. “Are you familiar with McNamara? The Pentagon Papers? Are you familiar with George W. Bush and the weapons of mass destruction? Are you familiar with Iran-contra?”

“I mean, think of all the debates and disputes we’ve had over the last 50 years in our country,” Paul continued. “We worked them out by debating them. We don’t work them out by the government being the arbiter. I don’t want guardrails. I want you to have nothing to do with speech. You think we can’t determine, you know, speech by traffickers is disinformation. Do you think the American people are so stupid they need you to tell them what the truth is? You can’t even admit what the truth is with the Steele dossier. I don’t trust government to figure out what the truth is. Government is largely disseminating disinformation.”

Sen. Rand Paul: Fauci is against everything that America stands for

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., blasted Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday’s “Hannity,” saying that the infectious disease expert is “against individual choice” and “against American freedoms to choose their own medicine.”

RAND PAUL: Unless you’re incredibly high risk or you’re symptomatic, I don’t think treating everybody before they get any symptoms is a good idea. I do think, though, that Fauci’s sort of nonsense over whether the pandemics ended or not – when you see him come out and he basically has said that the court shouldn’t be involved with limiting his power. What he is saying basically is that he’s against individual choice, he’s against American freedoms to choose their own medicine, to choose their treatment. So this is a man that is against everything that America stands for. He thinks that his edict should stand. No court or Constitution should review his edicts, and no individual person should get the choice to make it. But if you look at the airport, I was in the airport this week, everybody is all smiles and 97% of the people at least, are not wearing a mask because they have made the judgment that they are not at risk for COVID.

Sen. Paul celebrates end to mask mandate as he arrives for first flight since ruling: ‘happy day!’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., addressed reporters before entering Nashville International Airport for what he said was his first flight since a judge threw out the Biden administration’s mask mandate for public transportation.

Paul, a doctor himself, had long been a fierce opponent of the mask mandate, and a regular challenger of government health officials throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS MASK MANDATE FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

“It is a happy day! No more masks!” Paul cheered. “We’re seeing nothing but smiles here at the Nashville Airport. People have been tired, sick and tired of wearing the masks. We’re ready to be free again, and thank goodness for a judge who was willing to make the right decision. And the administration is appealing it, but my hope is that we never have to do this again. Congress never gave permission to the CDC to pass this.”

The Republican senator also argued that masks were never effective in the first place, citing data that backed up his claim.

“If you look at the medical studies on masks, what you find is they don’t work. Randomized, controlled studies in Denmark, thousands of people wore masks, thousands of people didn’t, no difference in the incidence of the disease,” Paul said. “Florida, same thing. Half the school districts wore masks, half didn’t. No difference in incidence.”

U.S. District Court Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle ruled last week that the mandate was improper for several reasons, including that the statute the CDC relied upon did not give them the power to issue a mask mandate.

US COLLEGES REINSTATE MASK REQUIREMENTS, BUT EXPERT SAYS ‘THE TIME FOR MASK MANDATES IS GONE’

    Paul agreed.

“There is no statute that gave the CDC authority. CDC is an agency of government and they have certain powers, but the only powers they have we give them,” he said. “If you look at the statute that enabled the CDC, it says nothing about mandating masks for anyone. So the power was never given to them. Congress is the same way. The Constitution has enumerated powers and the Tenth Amendment says those powers not given explicitly to Congress are reserved for the states and the people. So there’s nothing in the Constitution giving them the police power to mandate masks. Local officials could pass it, but it would have to be a law.”

“It sounds like a minor point but it’s a big point who creates laws,” Paul continued. “You can get rid of your elected officials. How do we get rid of the head of the CDC? They’re unresponsive, unelected bureaucrats.”

Paul said that being a health official does not make one a dictator, saying such is what happens in authoritarian countries.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

“In our country, a public health official should give you a recommendation,” he said. “They can give you a recommendation on a mask, but they shouldn’t mandate it.”

Asked how being forced to wear a mask is different from being forced to remove one’s shoes to go through airport security, Paul said that “we’ve had so many freedoms taken away from us,” but that “I think covering the faces has probably been more of an affront to our sensibilities and our freedom than almost anything else that we have to go through.”

Fauci-adjacent behavior like that of a ‘mafia don’ more than a ‘bureaucrat or scientist’: Sen. Paul

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said Dr. Fauci-adjacent behavior is “more like what you’d see from a mafia don than from a government bureaucrat or scientist” Friday on “The Ingraham Angle.”

“This is more like what you’d see from a mafia don than from a government bureaucrat or scientist,” he told host Laura Ingraham. “If you disagree with him, they come down on you hard, and they try to suppress anybody with a different opinion.”

RAND PAUL SAYS FAUCI STILL STONEWALLING HIM ON GAIN-OF-FUNCTION QUESTIONS

The senator reacted to the news from “Vanity Fair” that evolutionary biologist Jesse Bloom’s thinking that COVID-19 originated in a lab was suppressed at a meeting with Fauci and others.

“It’s really alarming,” Paul said, adding that “they will do anything.”

Paul said they say to Bloom, “Let’s do everything we can to try to suppress his opinion.”

“Three famous epidemiologists” from Harvard University, Oxford University and Stanford University have also been suppressed, he added.

“But one of the interesting things about this exposé is it also shows the harm of what government contractors do. We knew they did this in other areas, but we didn’t know it was happening in science.”

Paul reported that EcoHealth Alliance, the group that sent millions to the Chinese lab where the virus likely originated, received $100 million from Fauci’s National Institutes of Health.

It did so by wining and dining those like Fauci, he said, with his staffer saying, “He normally doesn’t go to these. But if ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN — if they’re there, you may be able to get him.”

The senator turned to natural immunity to the coronavirus, saying that “knowledge of what happens” to the unvaccinated but previously infected crowd has been suppressed.

Natural immunity, he claimed, might even be more protective against COVID-19 than a vaccine.

Rand Paul says new Wuhan documents show Fauci lied

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says newly public documents revealing the extent of U.S. funding of coronavirus research in Wuhan, China, show that National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) head Dr. Anthony Fauci lied during his previous testimony to Congress.

Fauci has adamantly denied that the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research in Wuhan. Paul blasted Fauci in a Tuesday tweet, saying that the NIAID director had “lied again.”

“And I was right about his agency funding novel Coronavirus research at Wuhan,” Paul said.

FAUCI, RAND PAUL TRADE ‘LYING’ ACCUSATIONS ABOUT GAIN-OF-FUNCTION RESEARCH IN HEARING ON DELTA VARIANT

Paul’s tweet followed a story in The Intercept that revealed the U.S. government pumped $3.1 million into American health organization EcoHealth Alliance to back bat coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

According to the report, almost $600,000 of that federal moneywas partially used by the WIV to find and alter bat coronaviruses that could jump to humans and infect them.

Additionally, the documents revealed that experimental research on genetically engineered mice with human cell receptors was conducted at the Wuhan University Center for Animal Experiment, and not the WIV as previously thought.

“The documents make it clear that assertions by the NIH Director, Francis Collins, and the NIAID Director, Anthony Fauci, that the NIH did not support gain-of-function research or potential pandemic pathogen enhancement at WIV are untruthful,” Rutgers University chemical biology professor Richard Ebright wrote in a Tuesday Twitter thread.

Paul and Fauci – both medical doctors by training – have not minced words when butting heads with each other.

The Kentucky Republican accused Fauci of “lying” about gain-of-function research during a July hearing on the COVID 19 delta variant.

“I have never lied before the Congress, and I do not retract that statement,” Fauci said. He added that the research Paul referenced was “judged by qualified staff up and down the chain as not being gain of function.”

Fauci added: “You do not know what you are talking about quite frankly and I want to say that officially.”

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Paul’s response was that the NIH’s judgment “defines… away” work that essentially was gain-of-function research.

“You’re dancing around this because you’re trying to obscure responsibility,” Paul added.

Rand Paul brings colorful props to Senate floor to call out wasteful research: ‘Lizards on a Treadmill’

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., arrived on the Senate floor Friday morning accompanied by a stack of colorful poster boards to rail against “ridiculous” taxpayer-funded research at the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies.

Paul, a fiscal conservative, delivered a 32-minute speech Friday morning to oppose the bipartisan Endless Frontier Act that would expand science and technology research that proponents say will help the U.S. counter China. Paul warned of the $28 trillion national debt and said the U.S. should be reining in wasteful spending and not borrowing more money from China to fund such legislation.

“I don’t think this bill makes us stronger. In fact, I think the Chinese sit back … and laugh at America thinking we’re going to be stronger by borrowing more money from China,” Paul said. “So I just don’t think it makes us any stronger at all. I think it makes us weaker. It would be one thing if it weren’t being so horribly wasted.”

CHINA TOYING WITH BIDEN ADMINISTRATION AT EVERY TURN

To make his point about wasteful spending, Paul cracked out a number of poster boards to highlight specific research projects that he said taxpayers would be astounded to know their dollars are funding. Among the projects he highlighted were: $357,000 to study “Cocaine and Risky Sex Habits of Quail” and $1.6 million for researching “Lizards on a Treadmill.”

One poster board featured legendary singer Dolly Parton to highlight that Uncle Sam is spending $250,000 to send “kids in Pakistan to Space Camp and Dollywood.” Another claimed the National Science Foundation siphoned off $700,000 from an autism research grant to figure out whether astronaut Neil Armstrong used the word “a” when he landed on the moon in 1969 in his famous “one giant leap for mankind” quote.

Paul returned for a brief 7-minute encore speech later in the morning and then passed the baton to Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, who also raised spending concerns on the legislation. Paul went after waste at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including “$2 million in research to see if using a hot tub can lower stress” and said the federal government also spent “$3 million to study whether or not humans will eat enough ants to keep the globe from warming.”

SENATE VOTE ON BIPARTISAN JAN. 6 COMMISSION DELAYED OVERNIGHT

Paul said Americans may be alarmed by such frivolous studies, but it happens routinely “because we never vote for less money. It’s always more.”

“Somebody’s got to point out that the waste and abuse of money goes on,” Paul said.

After Paul’s speech, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced the Senate will table a final vote on the research and innovation legislation until after the Memorial Day holiday so the Senate can move on to a vote Friday on forming a Jan. 6 commission to investigate the Capitol riot.
