Obamas weigh in on leaked Roe v. Wade opinion: would reverse ‘nearly 50 years of precedent’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Former President Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have weighed in on the leaked Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, saying such a move would relegate an individual’s freedoms “to the whims of politicians and ideologues.”

The Obamas said that overturning the landmark 1973 case would reverse “nearly 50 years of precedent.” The case, they said, recognized a freedom enshrined in the 14th Amendment that requires all of us to “enjoy a sphere of our lives that isn’t subject to meddling from the state.”

That sphere includes personal decisions, “including who we sleep with, who we marry, whether or not to use contraception, and whether or not to bear children,” the Obamas said.

A leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion that would overturn the landmark 1973 case, Roe v. Wade, was published Monday evening by Politico.

WHO IS THE SUPREME COURT MARSHAL WHO WILL INVESTIGATE DRAFT OPINION LEAK?

Though the draft is not final, and Roe remains the law of the land, the news has swept the country into a frenzy or what it could mean for the future of abortion rights.

The Obamas said that the leaked draft decision does not seek to balance personal freedoms with circumstances where government intervention – like child abuse – is in everyone’s best interest.

“Instead, it simply forces folks to give up any constitutionally recognized interest in what happens to their body once they get pregnant,” the Obama’s said.

The Obamas concluded their statement by asking abortion advocates who may be discouraged to think about those who would be most impacted if abortion were made illegal.

“Think of any of the hundreds of thousands of women each year who deserve the dignity and freedom of making a decision that is right for their bodies and their circumstances,” they wrote. “You might be one of those people. Or you might know some of them by name. If you don’t ask yourself if you everyone’s whole story.”

Spotify declines to renew Obamas podcast contract: report

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Spotify is reportedly showing the Obamas the door.

Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday that Higher Ground, the production company run by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, is seeking a multimillion deal elsewhere as their deal with Spotify expires this year, according to sources.

Among the potential partners Higher Ground is negotiating with are Amazon’s Audible and iHeartMedia. Sources tell Bloomberg News the Obamas is hoping to find its new home within the coming weeks.

BIDEN TELLS OBAMA HE’S RUNNING IN 2024: REPORT

However, Bloomberg News indicated that the move was not the former president’s choice.

“It has talked with multiple big networks, including Spotify, but the Swedish streaming giant declined to make an offer, according to three sources familiar with the discussions,” Bloomberg News wrote.

Spotify did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Higher Ground previously struck a deal with Spotify in 2019, releasing podcasts like “The Michelle Obama Podcast” and the Barack Obama-Bruce Springsteen program “Renegades: Born in the USA.”

But as Bloomberg News reported, both have clashed with each other with Spotify hoping that the former president and former first lady would appear more in the podcasts while the production company felt releasing its podcast only on Spotify limited its audience.

“Higher Ground is seeking a deal that will allow it to produce several shows and release them on multiple platforms at the same time. This could explain iHeart’s interest given that it hasn’t historically relied on an exclusive strategy for its podcasts. This is one reason why some potential bidders, like Spotify, have bowed out — a widely released show will end up on their service anyway. Companies like Spotify and Amazon have pursued exclusive rights to promote their own services,” Bloomberg News wrote.

The report indicated that a hurdle the Obamas may face is their narrow commitment to each appearing in an eight-episode podcast, which “for some bidders isn’t enough of a commitment to justify a deal” like other popular podcast titles that go beyond limited series.

Michelle Obama’s Netflix documentary ‘Becoming’ panned as ‘routine,’ ‘obligatory’ by critics

Critics aren’t thrilled with Netflix’s recently released documentary about Michelle Obama, titled “Becoming.”

The documentary, which dropped on May 6, was a surprise announcement in late April from the streaming platform in conjunction with the Obama’s Higher Ground Productions. Directed by Nadia Hallgren, it follows the former first lady on her 2018 book tour in which she traveled across the country speaking at various events.

The film features not only events that Obama spoke at, but also smaller, more intimate conversations with everyday people. While many hoped the documentary would either give a rare, unfiltered look into the personal lives of the former first family or even position Michelle Obama in a favorable position to enter the political realm herself, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

WORKING FROM HOME DURING CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK? TIPS ON HOW TO STAY PRODUCTIVE

Now that reviews of “Becoming” are in, critics found it to be, by and large, a watered-down, polished and glossy look at the former first lady that took no political stance and had no meaningful message.

“It won’t surprise anyone that it plays like an extended promotional video, a cross between close-contact hero worship and inspirational infomercial,” Variety wrote in its review. “There are no big revelations here, no gotcha moments or intimate scenes in which Hallgren’s subject lets down her guard, but the target audience hardly expects anything tougher. Far more than the memoir, the film presents a manicured version of the way Michelle Obama sees herself — and yet, even such a carefully image-managed impression can be telling, since it diverges so significantly from the way the world perceives her.”

Other outlets criticized the movie for focusing on a major political figure that somehow manages to dodge taking a stance on any real political agenda or message.

“‘Becoming’ doesn’t pull back the White House curtain that much, and, unlike ‘Becoming’ the book there’s almost no mention of her husband’s successor — except in warning of the nation we are and need to own up to,” Deadline writes of the documentary’s political appeal. “Nor, for that matter, is the candidate many thought would be Barack Obama’s successor brought up, or other political luminaries – it is as if the film and its subject are extending the protective force field that surrounds any First Family to silence the sidekicks, so to speak. There is the obligatory visit to the childhood home, the long talking-head stare by the star that contemporary documentaries love to show intimacy, and some glory shots of the accession and the two terms in office.”

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU GET OVER THE CORONAVIRUS?

Some critics even found “Becoming” to be a further attempt from the Obama family to pivot to a position of cultural relevance rather than political relevance.

The New York Times wrote: “The film is being billed as a ‘rare and up-close look’ at the former first lady’s life. But, whereas the memoir — through its deeply personal stories about Obama’s existential struggles in young adulthood and the pains of a miscarriage later on — offered a partial illumination of a woman who critics and admirers alike have tried to understand for years, the documentary feels more routine. It hits all the notes of a megastar choosing to share her life with the public: selective biographical moments and star-studded guest appearances, plus a healthy dose of motivational messaging about the virtues of education and the holistic ownership of personal narratives.”

Meanwhile, other outlets have made the point that the documentary is simply an effort for the former first family to show that their post-White House personas are non-controversial.

“The film feels very much like an artifact of the Obamas’ attempted retreat from the global stage in favor of private lives producing socially relevant nonfiction films,” notes Vulture. “‘Becoming’ is an act of legacy burnishing, no doubt, but it doesn’t feel like it’s laying the groundwork for a future campaign from its subject, no matter how adored it makes her look. Instead, it’s more of an insistent feature-length case for the family having done, and given, enough.”

The Netflix film is about an Ohio auto glass factory that is run by a Chinese investor. It explores many issues, including the rights of workers, globalization, and automation.

The Fuyao plant, bought by Chinese industrialist Cao Dewang, employs some 2,200 American and 200 Chinese workers. The film gives a close-up look at how the cultures adjust to one another. Tensions rise when the factory doesn’t initially meet production goals, culminating in a bitter fight over the right to unionize.

Meghan Markle would be welcomed in Hollywood with open arms, experts say: ‘We’d all run to the phone’

Rumors have run rampant since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced last week that they plan to “step back” from their royal duties. In particular, the buzz has been that the duo would turn to Hollywood in order to reach their goal to “become financially independent.”

The idea is fueled not only by Markle’s previous connection to Hollywood, having starred in the cable drama “Suits,” but also by a similar move made by the Obamas after former president Barack Obama’s time in office.

The former president and his wife, Michelle Obama, signed a deal with Netflix in 2018 to produce both scripted and non-scripted content, and now, network executives are interested in creating a similar deal with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

WILL MEGHAN MARKLE BE ABLE TO PROFIT FROM HER CELEBRITY STATUS?

“If Meghan called anybody right now, believe me, we’d all run to the phone,” NBC exec Bill McGoldrick, who worked closely with Markle, 38, on “Suits,” told The Hollywood Reporter.

McGoldrick, however, also expects that the royal couple will focus on creating content about issues important to them, rather than just produce pure entertainment.

Another possibility is Markle’s return to acting, but most experts have said that she wouldn’t step in front of the camera again any time soon.

“100 percent. I’m sure that’s being negotiated now,” Julie Montagu, a member of the British nobility, told Fox News of Harry, 35, and Markle turning to Hollywood. “And if she’s just done a voice-over for a Disney film, nothing’s going to stop her [from] eventually either going back into acting or taking a role of producing or directing these documentaries and mini-series.”

Montagu added: “I assume we will see her back acting, but definitely not right away. I think she’s got other things on her list that they want to highlight first.”

Celebrity publicist and public relations professional Elizabeth Much echoes such sentiments to THR, saying “it would be more difficult in the acting arena since Meghan’s fame is so enormous, but having said that, there will always be places that will hire her. She’s a really good actress, too.”

ROYAL FAMILY FEARED MEGHAN MARKLE WOULD CALL FAMILY ‘RACIST AND SEXIST’ IN TELL-ALL INTERVIEW: REPORT

Of course, Markle and Harry have already begun to dip their toes into the Hollywood waters with Markle reportedly providing a voice-over for a Disney project and Harry producing an Apple TV+ series on mental health alongside Oprah Winfrey.

Another couple that Markle and Harry could potentially model a career after is George Clooney and his wife, Amal.

“The family that they see themselves more closely aligned to, even more so than the Obamas, is the Clooneys,” said Nick Bullen, co-founder of True Royalty, a royal-focused SVOD service, to THR. “George is Hollywood royalty. Amal is legal and humanitarian royalty. And if you look at where they live, they don’t have a base.”

The Clooneys have various homes across the globe, much like how the Sussexes will now split their time between London and Canada.

With an abundance of streaming services on the rise, it’s possible that pitches will begin to flow in to the royal couple in the coming months.

“They could make hundreds of millions of dollars,” Howard Bragman, a public relations veteran, told THR. “They were a part of the family business and they left to start their own. They saw they weren’t going to be running that business and didn’t want to cut ribbons and glad-hand and cover openings for the next 50 to 60 years.”

Obamas not advising Harry and Meghan on royal transition, despite rumors: report

Contrary to rumors, former President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are not advising Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their controversial decision to step back as senior members of the royal family, sources close to the ex-White House couple said, according to a report.

“The rumors of them having anything to do with this are totally false,” one source told People magazine. “The former president and first lady are not advising the couple and have not been in contact with them.”

PRINCE HARRY, MEGHAN MARKLE: WILL THEY GO HOLLYWOOD LIKE THE OBAMAS? NETWORK EPS WEIGH IN

British tabloid reports last week said the Obamas had been advising the royal couple on how they leveraged their White House popularity into post-presidency commercial success.

“There’s no truth to it,” another source told People.

The Obamas collaborated with Prince Harry while in the White House on veteran’s projects like the Invictus Games and they have both met Meghan, but have reportedly not been in contact with them for more than a year, People reported — save for Michelle Obama’s written answers to Meghan’s interview questions when Meghan guest-edited Britain’s Vogue a few months back.

“The Obamas are a great model for how to make money and keep it classy,” veteran Hollywood public relations strategist Howard Bragman said, according to Reuters. “They could find projects that are moving and sometimes Meghan could be in them. If it’s a documentary, maybe Harry could narrate it.”

Meghan had reportedly already signed a voiceover deal with Disney before she and Harry announced their plan last week.

Obamas pay $11.75M for Martha’s Vineyard home on nearly 30 acres: report

Obamas looking to buy 29 acre Martha’s Vineyard estate

Michelle and Barack Obama’s bid to purchase a nearly $15-million dollar property appears to have been accepted. The Martha’s Vineyard estate sits close to a beach, has two guest wings, seven guest rooms, and measures out to be 6,900 square feet. They’ve rented the property over the summer and now seem ready to make it their own.

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have purchased a nearly 7,000-square-foot home on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts for $11.75 million, according to a report.

The purchase price was recorded Wednesday with the local Registry of Deeds, the Vineyard Gazette reported.

MICHELLE OBAMA MAY HAVE REJECTED FIRST VERSION OF HER HUSBAND’S OFFICIAL PORTRAIT

The Obamas paid about half the original asking price for the property when it first became available in 2015, the report said.

The sellers were listed as Wycliffe Grousebeck, owner of the Boston Celtics basketball team, and his wife Corinne Basler Grousbeck.

The house is located in the Edgartown section on the eastern end of the island and sits on a property of more than 29 acres, the Gazette reported.

It includes seven bedrooms, eight and a half bathrooms and several stone fireplaces, as well as a two-car garage, a barn and a swimming pool.

The Obamas had rented the property during the summer, the report said. The couple reportedly had made an offer on the property in August.

Attorneys for the Grousebecks would not comment on the transaction.

The Obamas previously purchased a nine-bedroom house in Washington, paying a reported $8.1 million.
