MLB umpire apologizes for tossing Madison Bumgarner

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The umpire who threw Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner out of the game earlier this week has come out and apologized.

Per the New York Post, Dan Bellino, 43, who has umpired in the big leagues for 15 years, tossed Bumgarner after the end of the first inning on Wednesday. Bumgarner gave up a solo HR but then retired the next three batters. On his way back to the dugout, he was subjected to a hand check to ensure that he wasn’t using any illegal substances.

Though his hand was clean, his words were a bit too filthy for Bellino’s taste. So Bellino sent him to the showers early, after only one inning and four batters.

Bellino has since had a change of heart. In a written statement, Bellino said, “When I began my MLB career almost 15 years ago, I received some good advice. I was told to umpire every game as if my children were sitting in the front row. I fell short of those expectations this week.”

His statement continued: “While I can’t go back and change what happened, I take full accountability. I will learn from this incident, and I sincerely apologize.”

To be clear, Bellino was the first base umpire, not the home plate umpire, so the situation is odd. But everyone makes mistakes, and Bellino has owned up to his. MLB says he will face no further disciplinary action, per the New York Post.

Arizona Diamondbacks star Madison Bumgarner was tossed from Wednesday’s matinee against the Miami Marlins right after the mandatory check for foreign substances.

Bumgarner allowed a home run to Marlins third baseman Jon Berti and while he was walking back to the dugout he appeared to chirp toward the umpires. He didn’t stop talking when he was getting his fingers checked for a foreign substance and, after the check was over, umpire Dan Bellino tossed him.

Michael Brantley’s clutch hit in 9th lifts Astros over D-backs

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Jose Siri could have been content with a single in the ninth inning. For better or worse, that’s just not the way he plays the game.

Siri sparked the Astros with a hustle double that started a two-out rally, Michael Brantley drove him home two batters later and Houston edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 on Tuesday night.

“I knew it was a risk,” Siri said of his dash to second. “But sometimes, you’ve got to take risks to win games.”

The game was tied at 1 in the ninth when the Astros pieced together their rally against Mark Melancon (0-1), which was started by Siri’s double into right-center. It looked as though it would only be a single but the 26-year-old never stopped as he rounded first base, sprinting into second as Pavin Smith’s throw was late.

Jose Altuve followed with a walk and then Brantley pounced on the first pitch, slicing a single into left field for his third hit of the game to score Siri.

Ryan Pressly handled the bottom of the ninth for his third save, working around a leadoff single by Seth Beer. Pressly struck out Carson Kelly on a high fastball to end it.

“We won another close one,” Houston manager Dusty Baker said. “That’s one of the secrets to winning this thing — you’ve got to win the close ones.”

Siri, batting ninth, gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in the fifth with a 456-foot homer that landed on the concourse in left-center.

Brantley said Siri is a guy who “pushes the envelope” and no one was surprised when he took the extra bag in the ninth, even after getting thrown out stealing in the seventh.

“That’s the way he plays,” Brantley said. “He’s been playing that way since he got here, day one.”

The Diamondbacks evened the score in the sixth when Christian Walker hit his own no-doubt drive into the left-field seats. But that was the only big hit for Arizona’s struggling offense, which is batting just .130 through five games.

Diamondbacks starter Madison Bumgarner gave up one run and five hits over five innings, walking two and striking out two.

Luis Garcia threw four scoreless innings for Houston. Hector Neris (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth.

    SEEING STROM

Diamondbacks pitching coach Brent Strom faced his former team for the first time since leaving Houston during the offseason.

Strom had a successful run as the Astros’ pitching coach from 2014-21. Over the past four seasons, Houston led the majors with 5,339 strikeouts and 277 quality starts. The Astros were second during that span with a 3.60 ERA.

    MAKING MOVES

The Diamondbacks called up INF Yonny Hernandez and sent 1B/3B Drew Ellis to Triple-A Reno. Ellis had one hit in eight at-bats and struck out four times in the season-opening series against the Padres.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Astros: RHP Lance McCullers Jr. was on the field before the game and threw 25 times from 60 feet. He’s trying to come back from a flexor strain sustained during the playoffs last season. … Baker told reporters that DH Yordan Alvarez was “under the weather” and wasn’t at the ballpark. Baker said a few coaches were sick, too.

Diamondbacks: RHP Zac Gallen was originally scheduled to make his first start of the season Tuesday, but was scratched on Monday because of a small cut on his right thumb. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Gallen would likely pitch against the Mets this weekend in New York.

    UP NEXT

The Astros and Diamondbacks wrap up their two-game series with a day game Wednesday. The Diamondbacks will send RHP Merrill Kelly (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound to face LHP Framber Valdez (1-0, 0.00).

Galvis, Suarez lead Phillies over Arizona for 3rd win in row

Freddy Galvis drove in three runs and Rafael Marchand and Travis Jankowski hit back-to-back RBI triples that sent the Philadelphia Phillies over the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 Sunday.

Bryce Harper, Jean Segura and Marchand each had two hits for the Phillies, who have won three in a row and remained 4 1/2 games behind NL East-leading Atlanta.

“We know what we have to do,” Galvis said. “We’re going to win some games and lose some games, but we’ve got to have short memories and turn the page to the next game.”

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

After the Diamondbacks closed to 5-4 in the eighth, Marchand and Jankowski tripled to give Philadelphia some needed insurance in the bottom half.

“Adding on in the eighth was really important and great to see,” Phillies manager Joe Girardi said.

Ranger Suarez (6-4) allowed only one run in 5 1/3 innings. In six starts since leaving the closer’s role to solidify the back of the rotation, he is 1-1 with a 2.03 ERA in 26 2/3 innings. He was effective with a slider that kept the Diamondbacks hitters off balance during his five-strikeout performance.

“I’ve been practicing that pitch in the bullpen and my flat ground,” Suarez said. “I felt comfortable with it and I used it more today.”

Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect ninth for his 21st save of the season and fifth since the Phillies got him from Texas at the trade deadline.

Madison Bumgarner (7-9) allowed five earned runs and seven hits in five innings.

“I had no feel and no idea where the ball was going,” Bumgarner said. “The slider was backing up. It was really bad — as bad as I’ve thrown in a long time and it could have been a lot worse, honestly. I was throwing fastballs in the dirt warming up (on the game mound) and that’s something I never do.”

Nick Ahmed had three RBIs, including a two-run single in the eighth for the Diamondbacks.

Philadelphia scored twice in the first on an RBI single by Andrew McCutchen and a sacrifice fly by Galvis.

Arizona catcher Jake McCarthy recorded his first major league hit when he doubled home a run in the second.

“It was nice to get that first one out of the way, but we came up short,” McCarthy said. “But it’s sort of a bittersweet moment.”

Galvis had a two-run single as the Phillies took a 5-1 lead in the fifth.

“I tried to stay short to the ball and tried to drive that run,” Galvis said. “I’m glad that it happened.”

Ahmed hit an RBI double in the seventh, then singled in the eighth to get Arizona within a run.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Phillies: C J.T. Realmuto exited the game with soreness in his left ankle in the sixth inning after rolling his ankle during an at-bat. He started at first base for the first time since Sept. 25, 2020, to fill the gap caused by a season-ending injury to Rhys Hoskins. Realmuto has also been bothered by a sore right throwing shoulder. Realmuto is listed as day-to-day. “We’ll see how he wakes up tomorrow,” Girardi said.

    ROSTER MOVES

Diamondbacks: Released C Bryan Holaday and called up INF/OF Andrew Young from Triple-A Reno.

Phillies: Released RHP Chase Anderson, who had been designated for assignment earlier in the week. Philadelphia also placed SS Didi Gregorius on the paternity leave list, calling up INF Nick Maton in his place.

    UP NEXT

Diamondbacks: Hosts San Diego on Monday. LHP Tyler Gilbert (1-1, 2.38) will face Padres RHP Chris Paddack (7-6, 5.13)

Phillies: Begin nine-game road trip at Washington. RHP Zack Wheeler (10-9, 2.90 ERA) will face Nationals RHP Josiah Gray (0-1, 3.75)

MadBum keeps rolling, Diamondbacks beat Marlins 11-3

Madison Bumgarner threw seven shutout innings, Asdrúbal Cabrera had four hits including a three-run homer, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Miami Marlins 11-3 on Tuesday night.

The 31-year-old Bumgarner (4-2) is starting to become the pitcher the Diamondbacks envisioned when they signed the four-time All-Star to an $85 million, five-year deal prior to the 2020 season.

“He’s on an unbelievable run,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “And he deserves it.”

Against the Marlins, Bumgarner was completely in control, giving up only four hits that all came in different innings. He needed just 84 pitches to get through his outing and even added a sacrifice fly at the plate for his first RBI of the season.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Bumgarner pitched seven hitless innings for a complete game that doesn’t count as a no-hitter in the finale of a doubleheader against Atlanta on April 25 and is in the midst of a terrific five-game stretch that includes just three earned runs allowed over 30 innings.

“There’s a lot more conviction in my pitches,” Bumgarner said.

MadBum’s about-face has been a welcome change after a terrible 2020. The left-hander slogged through his worst season, finishing 1-4 with a 6.48 ERA. Even more alarming, his fastball rarely broke 90 mph and it was fair to wonder if the Diamondbacks had a made a huge mistake giving him a big contract.

Bumgarner said he changed a few things five starts ago in Washington but didn’t want to talk about them because he didn’t want to “throw anybody under the bus.” He said he went back to a familiar approach that’s helped his results.

These days, it appears he has plenty left in the tank. His fastball was routinely in the 92-93 mph range against the Marlins and he struck out a season-high nine.

“I feel confident throwing the ball to all four corners, four quadrants,” Bumgarner said. “That’s what I try to do and then expand off of that.”

The Diamondbacks broke the game open in the fifth when they sent 11 batters to the plate, scored five runs and pushed to a 6-0 lead. That chased starter Pablo López (0-3), who gave up six earned runs over 4 1/3 innings.

“He was on a pretty good roll and then (Arizona) did a nice job of forcing him up in the strike zone,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “Didn’t chase. Got some good pitches to hit.”

Bumgarner narrowly missed a three-run homer, settling for a sacrifice fly on a ball that carried to the left-field warning track. The big blow came when David Peralta hit a two-run double to right field. Pavin Smith and Eduardo Escobar also had RBI singles.

Nick Ahmed smacked a solo homer into the left-field bullpen to give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead in the second. The shortstop has slowly performed better after starting the season in a 3-for-41 (.073) slump. The homer pushed his average above .200 for the first time in about a month.

The Marlins cut Arizona’s lead to 6-3 in the eighth by scoring three runs off reliever Kevin Ginkel. Jesús Aguilar hit a two-run homer during the rally, which ended when Chris Devenski struck out Brian Anderson.

Arizona piled on five more in the ninth, including Cabrera’s three-run homer, and finished with 15 hits.

    TRAINER’S ROOM

Marlins: C Jorge Alfaro (hamstring) and INF Jazz Chisholm (hamstring) are both starting a rehab assignment with the team’s Triple-A team in Jacksonville, Florida. … RHP Elieser Hernandez (biceps inflammation) threw a bullpen. Mattingly said Hernandez would probably need a few rehab starts before returning.

Diamondbacks: OF Ketel Marte (hamstring) came to Chase Field and went through a workout, including batting practice, fielding practice and running drills. Marte said he feels close to 100% and could play in games within a week. Lovullo didn’t commit to a timetable but said Marte looked “fantastic.” … RHP Taylor Widener (groin) threw a bullpen Monday and Lovullo said Widener was feeling good. The manager said Widener would throw a simulated game Thursday of around 50-55 pitches. … 1B Christian Walker (oblique) left the game late after aggravating the same injury that put him on the injured list earlier this year.

    COME AND GET IT

There was a mobile medical trailer outside Chase Field by the ticket windows offering COVID-19 vaccinations to the public.

    UP NEXT

The four-game series continues Wednesday when Arizona sends RHP Zac Gallen (1-1, 3.04 ERA) to the mound. The Marlins hadn’t decided on their starter and will likely go with a combo effort from several pitchers.

Arizona GM: D-backs unaware of MadBum’s rodeo career

The Arizona Diamondbacks knew Madison Bumgarner lives on a ranch but were unaware of his recently-discovered side career as a rodeo participant.

Bumgarner has been competing in rodeo events under the alias Mason Saunders and won $26,560 in a team-roping competition in December, The Athletic reported on Sunday.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Arizona general manager Mike Hazen said on Monday he was aware Bumgarner was “a very strong horseman” and added even though he didn’t know about the rodeos, that knowledge wouldn’t have affected the team’s decision to sign the 30-year-old left-hander to an $85 million, five-year contract.

The GM said he wouldn’t comment on what the team will allow the 2014 World Series MVP to do in his spare time or any specifics of the contract or guarantee language.

“Madison’s a grown man and we know he’s committed to helping us achieve our goals as a team,” Hazen said. “Those have been the conversations that we’ve had from the time we first talked to him until very recently.”

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo called Bumgarner’s past rodeos “a non-issue” and said his new pitcher is a great teammate. The manager said he wants players to have outside lives but also remember what it takes to win.

Bumgarner told The Athletic that he’d be competing in rodeo events for a while, including in March last year, two days before pitching for San Francisco in a spring training game.

“I want him to be safe, I want him to be healthy, I want him to come out and pitch every fifth day,” Lovullo said. “Those will be the types of things we talk about.”

Bumgarner injured his shoulder in 2017 in a dirt bike accident and missed three months of the season. He apologized at the time and called it a “stupid” decision that likely violated his contract. The Giants are not believed to have pressed the issue with the four-time All-Star.

Lovullo acknowledged that even though he wants Bumgarner to be safe, his star pitcher’s side hustle was interesting.

“I don’t know Mason Saunders yet but he’s a pretty impressive guy, I’ll say that,” Lovullo said with a grin. “I’ve seen pictures of him doing some pretty amazing things. That’s not easy.”

Diamondbacks’ Madison Bumgarner keeps low-profile while participating in rodeo events

Madison Bumgarner is apparently keeping himself busy when he’s not on the mound trying to win baseball games and has been participating in rodeo events under an alias.

Bumgarner is known as Mason Saunders at these events as he tries to keep a low profile, The Athletic reported Sunday. Bumgarner, who signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks in the offseason, won a team-roping competition in December.

FRIENDLY TO FIERS: A’S PITCHER GETS CHEERS IN SPRING GAME

Photos of the All-Star pitcher surfaced on Arizona’s Rancho Rio Facebook page. Bumgarner told The Athletic he’s often recognized at the events but has been using the alias to keep from drawing attention to himself. He said Mason Saunders was created by shortening his first name and using his wife’s maiden name.

“Something for my wife to call me when we were out in public to keep people from recognizing me,” he said. “But you’re going to ruin that for me.”

BETTS DRAWS BIG CHEER, DRIVES IN RUN DURING DODGERS DEBUT

Bumgarner told the website he has been competing in rodeo events for a while, including last March when he was at spring training camp with the San Francisco Giants. He said he’s been roping since he was a teenager and he’s been doing it for so long that “it’s just part of who you are.”

It’s unclear whether Bumgarner’s contract was written in a way to allow him to compete in rodeo competitions. Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen told The Athletic he was “not going to get into discussing specific contract language.”

In 2017, Bumgarner was injured in a dirt bike crash and missed three months of the Giants’ season. Riding the bike was likely a violation of his contract with San Francisco but the Giants were not believed to have pressed the 2014 World Series MVP on the matter.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
