NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The wife of former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who tragically died last month after being struck on a Florida highway, penned a heartfelt message to her husband on what would have been his 25th birthday.

Kalabrya Haskins shared a number of photos and videos to her Instagram on Tuesday to celebrate the late quarterback’s birthday less than a month after he was struck and killed by a dump truck while attempting to cross a Florida highway.

DWAYNE HASKINS HONORED AT NFL DRAFT WITH MOMENT OF SILENCE

“King Wayne, God decided Simba needed a halo, instead of a crown for your mane,” the message began. “Life without you here brings so much pain. But today we celebrate your 25th reign.”

The parents of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who died earlier this month after being struck by a vehicle on a Florida highway, say they will not attend his funeral services Friday, according to a report.

“We have never met or spoken to the wife, and we didn’t want our son’s funeral service to be the place we met her for the first time,” their statement to the outlet said.

Dwayne Haskins was stranded on Florida highway, getting gas when he was struck by a truck, 911 call reveals

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins had been stranded on a Florida highway and going to get gas the day he was tragically struck and killed by a dump truck, according to the 911 call his wife placed the morning of his death.

Audio obtained by South Florida sports journalist Andy Slater reveals the heartbreaking concern Kalabrya Haskins had for her husband when on April 9 he hadn’t returned any of her calls for several minutes after initially telling her he was going to get gas for his car, which was stranded on I-595 West just outside Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

“We were on the phone and he said he was going to call me back after he finished putting the gas in and I kept calling and kept calling and he wasn’t answering. Eventually, after 10 minutes of calling the phone, eventually it cut off. It’s not working now. I had his location.”

I was in the left lane and then there was the right lane. And then I noticed an individual there starting to make their way onto the road.

“He was about halfway, to a quarter way in the right lane, already onto the highway, and I was already concerned that somebody was going to strike him right there at that moment.”

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Dwayne Haskins’ tragic death over the weekend sparked a flurry of negative tweets aimed at ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter for the way he reported the news of the tragedy.

Schefter wrote Saturday, “Dwayne Haskins, a standout at Ohio State before struggling to catch on with Washington and Pittsburgh in the NFL, died this morning when he got hit by a car in South Florida, per his agent Cedric Saunders. Haskins would have turned 25 years old on May 3.”

On Monday, Schefter released an apology for the way he worded his tweet. He directed NFL fans to his podcast to listen to what he had to say.

He called his remark “insensitive” and insisted “it was a mistake.”

Michael Irvin on Dwayne Haskins’ death: ‘Hate that his time got cut short’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Dwayne Haskins was struck and killed in a tragic incident along a South Florida highway over the weekend and his death resonated across the NFL world.

The former Washington and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback came into the NFL before the start of the 2019 season. He was Washington’s first-round pick of the 2019 draft and started 13 games for the team between 2019 and 2020. He was let go after the 2020 season and was signed by the Steelers before the 2021 season. He served primarily in the backup role.

Michael Irvin, a former Dallas Cowboys legend who serves as an analyst for the NFL Network and continues to watch the team closely, told Fox News Digital in a recent interview he only met Haskins maybe once and felt “badly” when he heard the news of the quarterback’s passing.

“I felt so badly when I heard that news. I felt badly when I watched some of the things that went down with him in the few years he had in the NFL. I thought he was thrown in a tough situation in Washington. It’s a tough situation,” Irvin said.

Irvin, who recently became an investor in the education platform TradeZing, said he was hoping Haskins was going to continue to develop and progress back into a starting quarterback.

“There’s a lot of pressure put on quarterbacks coming into this league, and the quarterback has to carry this mantra, and it’s a difficult mantra to carry. They expect you to be a certain way and lead a bunch of grown men, and I thought he needed a little more time,” Irvin said. “He could have developed into all that he wanted to be in the National Football League.

Clay dug into the varying storylines that sprung from Saturday’s tragic news.

Clay first lamented the horrid reality that the Haskins family has been put through after the young QB’s death.

“When you’re younger, you think about it from the perspective of being the person who has something bad happen to you,” Clay said, “but as you get older and start to be responsible for people other than yourself, it’s just devastating to think about what it would’ve been like for his family and parents in particular.”

Clay then addressed the controversy surrounding Adam Schefter’s seemingly insensitive tweet; also contextualizing the announcement for what it sought to accomplish.

“I thought it was poorly phrased … what Schefter tried to do is what typically happens with an obituary, where you sum up someone’s professional life.

“If you’re a first-round quarterback, I don’t think you need to be saying who this person was.”
