DeSantis reveals not-so-sweet secret behind recent weight loss

Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a top rumored contender for the 2024 GOP nomination, revealed his secret to weight loss: stay away from the sugar.

During an exclusive interview with Piers Morgan that aired on Fox Nation Thursday, DeSantis was asked about his recent weight loss and how he is staying fit while leading the Sunshine State.

“At the end of the day, it’s like New Year’s resolution. Just get back in the swing of things. I have the same thing. I’m a vet. I’m an athlete and a military veteran. And so as governor, you can get caught up in a lot of other stuff,” DeSantis said.

“I’m on a good regimen and will keep it going. . . . I think the sugar is the biggest issue, because basically if you do sugar, your body burns sugar. If you don’t, it burns fat,” the governor said, highlighting the importance of “working out and just eating halfway decent.”

The pair then joked around about apparent rumors DeSantis eats pudding with his hands. “Have you ever eaten a chocolate pudding with three fingers?” Morgan asked.

“I don’t remember ever doing that. I’m telling you, maybe when I was a kid,” DeSantis laughed.

Former President Trump reportedly called DeSantis “fat” and “whiny” while speaking with individuals in private, according to New York Times writer Maggie Haberman’s new book, but the governor remains unfazed by the critics.

“It’s interesting, there are a lot of people when they go at you, sometimes they have really good ammunition. Like you’re a crook. You did this. You did that for me. So for me, they’re talking about pudding. Like, is that really the best you got? Okay, bring it on,” DeSantis said silencing out the haters.

DeSantis then added that he does not eat pudding under his new diet. “No, it’s sugar, man. You can’t. You can be doing these things. I don’t know. Maybe there’s sugar-free pudding. I got to look into that and try to figure out how we go from there,” the Florida Republican said.

When seen in Iowa in early March, a Twitter user shared a photo of the Florida governor and his new physique. “Holy cow @GovRonDeSantis looks FIT and ready for combat. Caffeine, the wonder drug? Study suggests more coffee could lower body fat and prevent type 2 diabetes

That morning cup of coffee might provide more benefits than just a quick energy boost. New research suggests that consuming higher levels of caffeine could help curb body fat and reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Researchers at the University of Bristol, the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and Imperial College in London conducted the study, which was published in the journal BMJ Medicine.

Analyzing genetic data from 9,876 European individuals who participated in six different long-term studies, the researchers specifically monitored the CYP1A2 and AHR genes, which influence the rate at which the body will metabolize caffeine.

Those who had genes that metabolized caffeine at a faster rate were associated with having a lower body mass index (BMI) and lower whole body fat mass. 

They were also found to have a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes.

Study co-author Dr. Benjamin Woolf, doctor of philosophy at the School of Psychological Science at the University of Bristol, confirmed that the results support an observational association between caffeine consumption and type 2 diabetes.

The FDA says 400 milligrams of caffeine per day (about four or five cups of coffee) is a safe amount.

“I was personally surprised by how much of this was mediated by weight loss,” he told Fox News Digital via email. 

Dr. Bradley Serwer, chief medical officer of CardioSolution in Bethesda, Maryland, was not involved in the study but did not find the results surprising.

“Several studies have shown an association between caffeine and reduced risk of obesity and diabetes, but this study takes the next step to show causality,” he told Fox News Digital in an email. 

“Using a mixture of genetic markers and plasma caffeine levels, this study helps us understand the effects of caffeine on a deeper level,” the doctor went on. “While this data isn’t definitive and was conducted primarily in only one ethnic group, it is very interesting and thought-provoking.”

Experts warn of potential risks

Caffeine’s benefits should be weighed against its potentially dangerous side effects, as Dr. Ahmet Ergin, a Florida-based endocrinologist with a specialty in diabetes care, told Fox News Digital.

Dr. Ergin was not involved in the study.

“Despite having long been billed as an elixir of life, caffeine can have some potentially harmful side effects if abused and over-supersized,” he said. “Excessive caffeine consumption can lead to insomnia, palpitations and even behavioral issues.”

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recommends sticking to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day.

That’s equivalent to about four to five cups of coffee — but Dr. Ergin pointed out that different people react differently to caffeine depending on their metabolism, tolerance and sensitivity.

Dr. Serwer of Maryland added that while caffeine has been linked to a bevy of benefits, it is still a stimulant.

“Some people who are at risk for cardiac arrhythmias and psychiatric disorders — such as insomnia, mania or bipolar disorders — may not tolerate the drug and may have adverse events,” he warned.

Caffeine previously linked to lower heart disease risk

This isn’t the first research to highlight caffeine’s potential health benefits. 

Multiple studies have suggested links between coffee consumption and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, said Dr. Egin.

“Research indicates that those who consume three to five cups per day have a lower risk of ischaemic heart disease and stroke than those who do not drink coffee,” he said. 

“Caffeine can have some potentially harmful side effects if abused and over-supersized.”

“Further findings have shown that moderate coffee drinkers may also reduce their chances of developing heart failure, though it appears to have no effect on atrial fibrillation.”

Study had some caveats, researcher says

Study co-author Dr. Woolf pointed out that instead of measuring the direct effect of drinking more tea, coffee or other caffeinated beverages, the study predicted caffeine levels using the genetic variants that metabolize it.

In the real world, he noted, “people typically drink them with milk, sugar and possibly also a snack — all of which could cause weight gain.”

Additionally, Dr. Woolf explained that because genes are inherited at conception, the study estimated a lifetime effect. 

“This could be very different from the short-term effect someone would see if they started consuming more caffeine after their doctor tells them to lose weight,” he said.

COFFEE MAY PERK UP YOUR LIFE EXPECTANCY, STUDY SUGGESTS

Another limitation is that the study focused primarily on people of European descent.

However, Dr. Woolf also pointed out what he sees as the real strength of the study: “Because we do not choose our genes and cannot change them, our results are much less likely to represent bias than a typical study,” he said.

Seek doctor’s input before ramping up caffeine

It’s best to consult with a doctor first before downing extra cups of coffee in the hope of lowering body fat.

“Like any drug, there are pros and cons that must be weighed,” Dr. Serwer said.

“One should consult and discuss the topic with a medical provider to determine if it would be safe and beneficial … If you are willing to accept the risk and the pros are significant, then it may be reasonable.”

The doctor added that while these study results may seem promising, there are no guarantees that people will lose weight or steer clear of diabetes merely by increasing their daily caffeine intake.

Adderall and Ozempic are in the spotlight amid widespread drug shortages in US

Across the nation, pharmacists are struggling to fill prescriptions for vital medicines on which patients have long relied. 

From long-time essentials such as albuterol for asthma and Adderall for ADHD, to more recently popular drugs like Ozempic for diabetes, shelves are running dry and forcing professionals to scramble to meet their patients’ needs. 

“I’ve been a pharmacist for 40 years and I’ve never seen it this bad for this long,” John Seymour, a longtime pharmacist based in Virginia, told Fox News.

“It’s a combination of many of these things, of increased demand — and the supply chain just hasn’t kept up with it,” he said.

The FDA’s drug shortage database currently lists more than 100 medications that are in short supply.

Seymour, who owns a small chain of independent pharmacies in Virginia, told Fox News he has been forced to coordinate with physicians, customers and his three stores to try a patchwork approach to filling prescriptions that are in short supply. 

“From a provider and a caring aspect, it’s frustrating when you can’t provide for people who need your assistance,” Seymour said.

In some cases, such as with Ozempic, there are no generic alternatives for him to use. 

When supply runs out, his hands are tied. 

The FDA has yet to approve the diabetes drug for weight loss, but that hasn’t stopped physicians and patients from using it off-label. 

“The Ozempic indication isn’t there for weight loss, but a lot of doctors are actually writing it for weight loss,” Seymour said. 

“Those things create a demand that is somewhat artificial.”

Seymour said he hasn’t been able to keep up with the demand of Ozempic after the drug made headlines for its use among celebrities and influencers for weight loss. 

The FDA has yet to approve the diabetes drug for weight loss, but that hasn’t stopped physicians and patients from using it off label.

In a statement to Fox News, Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, told Fox News the company does not “promote, suggest, or encourage” off-label use of its medicines. 

The manufacturer also said it is ramping up production in an effort to meet demand and end the shortages in the next couple of months. 

On the other side of this dilemma are people such as Tammi Largent, a Florida woman who has long relied on Ozempic to help manage her diabetes. 

One patient with diabetes said she was put into a lottery at her pharmacy due to the limited supply of Ozempic. 

“The importance of it is to try to maintain that balance, and bouncing around on the dosage with the Ozempic has caused some issues,” Largent told Fox News. 

“But to be able to get on my required dose and stay on it helps me stay healthy.”

Largent said she was put into a lottery at her pharmacy due to the limited supply of Ozempic available. 

“It’s not guaranteed that I’ll get the Ozempic again when it’s time for refill,” she said. 

Throttling of the supply

While Ozempic may soon be resupplied, the shortages of Adderall and its generic counterparts are expected to be in short supply more indefinitely. That’s due to federal constraints on manufacturing and an explosion of ADHD diagnoses during the pandemic.

“The impact that the DEA has on the supply chain is that they limit the manufacturing and the raw materials … for these manufacturers,” Seymour said. 

“In this situation, there’s just an issue with the throttling of the supply for an entire class of drugs.”

With the supply of Adderall being limited by the Drug Enforcement Agency, federal players are increasingly looking to address the issue from the top down. 

One such person is Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., who has been speaking to constituents about the toll the shortage is taking on their families. 

These conversations have prompted her to take action.

“I have written letters to the FDA and DEA really asking a lot of questions about what it is that they’re seeing in terms of these shortages,” Rep. Spanberger told Fox News. 

“I think that they must be engaged and involved partners in understanding how these shortages could have occurred and ensuring that ultimately we don’t see them in the future.” 

Recently, a spokesperson for Rep. Spanberger’s office told Fox News that the congresswoman spoke with DEA Administrator Anne Milgram and had a productive conversation about efforts and plans to address the ADHD medicine shortages.

“Ultimately, the goal here is to recognize how these shortages could have happened so that we can put some efforts at resiliency, building resiliency in the supply chain,” Rep. Spanberger said. 

She has also reintroduced the PREPARE Act, which would create an emergency reserve of ingredients and reshore the production of essential drugs. 

“The legislation would require us to develop a domestic supply and stockpile active pharmaceutical ingredients for those necessary essential medications as outlined by the FDA,” she said.

The legislation would join growing bipartisan calls to return essential manufacturing and production to the United States following the COVID pandemic. 

“We don’t have that kind of ability to do the same thing in India or China or France or Germany or wherever these other places might be producing these,” pharmacist Seymour said. 

“So bringing it back domestically — I don’t see a downside to that at all,” he said. “I don’t see that it would cause us any issue at all from a supply standpoint.”

Though the drug shortages are many and their causes are myriad, one thing is for certain: Pharmacists, patients and lawmakers are going to continue to grapple with the issue for the foreseeable future.

Mississippi man loses nearly 400 pounds to improve health, keeping promise to grandma: ‘She would be so proud’

A man in Mississippi is inspiring others with his near-400-pound weight loss transformation.

Nicholas Craft, 42, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, weighed 649 pounds in June 2019, and now he’s down more than 365 pounds.

“I’ve been dealing with my weight since childhood,” Craft told Fox News Digital on Thursday, March 9. “I was 300 pounds in high school,”

Craft said depression led him to overeat, and overeating made him withdraw from society, which contributed to his sedentary lifestyle.

“My weight stopped me from going to family events and traveling,” he recalled. “I couldn’t get into regular vehicles. It was hard for me to get around. I had knee pain, body aches and shortness of breath.”

In 2019, a doctor reportedly told Craft that his weight was “a ticking time bomb” for his 5-foot-9 frame. 

Craft said that comment made him realize he had to change his ways.

“I wanted to live longer,” he said.

Craft told Fox News Digital he didn’t go on a specialized weight loss diet. He simply switched the way he ate and how he approached food, which includes calorie counting and giving up junk food.

“My calorie intake was 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day when I first started,” he said.

Craft said he’s cut out sodas, fried foods, bread, pasta, rice and other carbs, and now he incorporates a lot of fruits, vegetables and protein.

In terms of exercise, Craft said he strength trains with dumbbells and moves around a lot throughout the day.

Craft also credits his grandmother, Georgia Moody, for his weight loss success. He said he appreciates the encouragement and support she provided him before her death in 2019.

“My grandmother passed away before she was able to see my weight loss transformation,” Craft said. “She wanted to see me more often. I promised her I would lose weight, so I could see her more.”

Craft only wishes she could see him now.

“She would be so proud of me,” Craft said. “She was my source of motivation.”

Since making that promise, Craft experiences less physical pain, his breathing has improved, he has more energy, more confidence and he no longer has trouble fitting in different vehicles for travel, he said.

He said he doesn’t feel tempted by “bad food” anymore and has his cravings under control.

“I haven’t reached my weight loss goal just yet,” Craft said. “But, it feels good knowing my story can help people who may be struggling with their weight.”

Craft’s drastic weight loss story comes at a time when some Americans are attempting to shed pounds with semaglutide injections such as Wegovy and Ozempic, which is manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical Novo Nordisk.

Wegovy is a weight loss prescription while Ozempic is a diabetes prescription. Both brands have been used as fast-acting weight loss treatments by the masses after receiving celebrity endorsements. 

Reports of Ozempic shortages began in December 2022 and the diabetes drug appears to still be in short supply due to high demand, which has created challenges for overweight and obese patients with a diabetes diagnosis.

DOCTORS URGE CAUTION ON DIABETES DRUGS FOR WEIGHT LOSS AFTER STUDY HIGHLIGHTS SIDE EFFECTS   

Other noninvasive weight loss and toning procedures that have gained popularity in recent years include fat melting injections, fat freezing (cryolipolysis), fat warming (laser lipolysis) and targeted radiofrequency treatments (radiofrequency lipolysis), as noted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Invasive body contouring options include various forms of liposuction – the surgical removal of fat via suction device – while surgical weight loss options include various bariatric operations, including adjustable gastric banding, gastric balloons and gastric bypasses, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Craft told Fox News Digital he lost weight naturally and he didn’t use any weight loss medicines or enhancement supplements or seek surgical means.

“You have to make lifestyle changes, like eating healthier, instead of shortcuts,” Craft said. “[It’s also important to] stay active, even if it’s just a little bit, so long as you’re moving.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that one-in-three American adults are overweight and more than two-in-five American adults are obese. About one-in-11 American adults are severely obese.

In terms of diet, the NIH recommends adults avoid foods with added sugar and high saturated fats and eat foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, which includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, lean meat, seafood, eggs and milk. 

The National Institutes of Health says 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week is the minimum time it recommends for healthy adults. Lower intensity workouts will require at least 150 minutes per week. (iStock)

The NIH also advises 75 to 300 minutes of physical activity for adults depending on the intensity level of their chosen activity. Recommended exercise times are determined by each person’s age, health condition and desired result.

Craft told Fox News Digital he no longer sees the doctor who called his weight “a ticking time bomb,” but his new doctor is impressed by his progress.

“My current doctor says it’s unbelievable how much I’ve lost,” Craft said.

After losing hundreds of pounds, the main challenge that Craft said he’s facing now is loose skin and he’s hoping he can find a doctor to surgically remove it because the excess tissue causes discomfort.

He said his health insurance has declined to cover the cost of skin removal surgery.

Multiple plastic surgeons on RealSelf, a healthcare marketplace focused on consumer aesthetic treatments, have noted that most insurance companies reject covering skin removal surgeries because they deem them a cosmetic procedure. Some exceptions may exist if a patient can prove their excess skin causes adverse health effects, such as painful rashes, but terms vary with each health insurance provider.

Craft said he’s planning to lose more weight.

“My family and friends tell me they’re proud of how far I’ve come,” Craft added. “My advice for anyone trying to lose weight, be consistent on your weight loss plan and trust the process.”

Doctors urge caution on diabetes drugs for weight loss after study highlights side effects

For many people, diabetes drugs are now the newest weight loss trend.

High-profile figures such as Elon Musk have used diabetes drugs to lose weight and results have proven the drugs are effective. 

However, researchers now warn that the method could be linked to potentially deadly side effects.

A new study out of China reportedly reveals that weight loss drug Wegovy may increase the risk of digestive system obstruction — while diabetes drug Ozempic could trigger eating disorders.

Fox News medical contributor and NYU Langone internal medicine specialist Dr. Marc Siegel joined “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday to provide deeper context for the findings.

Although the studies were conducted on mice instead of humans — which most of the time “doesn’t translate,” Siegel said — the findings still have medical professionals on alert.

He mapped out exactly how these drugs increase insulin, as well as how they signal the brain and body to feel more full.

The drugs act on the intestines — which raises a question about long-term side effects after prolonged usage, he noted.

“[The drugs] might cause the small intestine to enlarge,” he said.

“If it does that, I as a physician prescribing it would have to look at what [the patient’s] underlying history is, and how long am I keeping [the patient] on this drug,” he noted.

Dr. Siegel confirmed there is no doubt that people can lose weight using these diabetes drugs.

“The drug works,” he said. “Ozempic was studied in the New England Journal of Medicine … and [researchers] found that you took 15% of your weight off in one year. It works.”

However, some people who are taking the drug “don’t need it,” he said.

A person’s lifestyle needs to be considered for a healthy approach to weight loss, he added. 

“Are you exercising enough? Are you too sedentary? What is your exact diet?”

Anyone interested in taking a diabetes drug for weight loss should question any physician prescribing it to make sure the doctor has expertise in this area, Siegel said.

As Weight Watchers moves into the Ozempic market, Dr. Siegel said prescribing the drug via telemedicine is a “bad idea.”

“I like Weight Watchers a lot, but telemedicine is not the way to prescribe these drugs,” he said.

“They’re already vastly overprescribed, and they’re already cutting into the diabetes market where we need it the most.”

The overall message from these new study findings is to “be cautious,” Dr. Siegel stressed.

“Let’s let doctors handle this slowly over time,” he also said.

Another problem with diabetes drugs used for weight loss is the potential for “rebound” weight gain once a patient is taken off the medication, said Dr. Siegel.

“I don’t want to commit people to years and years and years of a drug that I don’t know all the potential side effects about,” he said. “I’d rather use it short-term if I can.”

Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, sent a statement to “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday in response to the issue of potential side effects.

“Gastrointestinal side effects are well-known,” the spokesperson said. “The majority are of mild to moderate severity and of short duration.”

The statement continued, “Patient safety is of utmost importance to Novo Nordisk and we are continuously collecting safety data and collaborating closely with authorities to ensure patient safety. Novo Nordisk evaluates that the benefit-risk profile … continues to remain favorable.”

Dr. Siegel responded to the statement by saying it’s a “fair” response, and a study using mice shouldn’t be used to “change the paradigm.”

He added, “I’m very comfortable with this drug, but I’m also very concerned that it’s overprescribed.”

Why so many Americans lose weight after traveling to Europe

When Melissa O’Leary traveled to Tuscany last year, she indulged in the local culinary fare-no restrictions. She recalls fresh tortelli and pappardelle pasta, Panzanella, Tuscan bread, pastries, and local wine hitting the table during a daily dining schedule that typically spanned 7 in the morning to the wee hours of the night.

Yet, like so many who have visited Europe and partaken in local cuisine without dietary restrictions, O’Leary found that she lost weight during the vacation.

Many Americans have noticed that they count calories, test out radical diets, and exercise regularly in their home country, yet often struggle to lose weight or maintain a steady body mass. Yet, U.S.-based travelers report shedding pounds despite indiscriminate dietary choices on both brief jaunts and long-term stays in Europe.

MODIFIED MEDITERRANEAN DIETS ALSO GOOD FOR WEIGHT LOSS

This has led many commentators to speculate that there is something about the American diet or the ingredients in the food that Americans purchase at their local supermarkets that accounts for nearly 40% of American adults being obese. A close examination reveals a combination of factors that help explain the Euro vacation weight-loss effect.

An Active European Lifestyle

A common theme emerges in firsthand accounts of those who lost weight while vacationing in Europe: walking.

Patricia Palacios, the founder of the destination website España Guide, explained the cultural significance of walking in her home country of Spain and many other European nations.

“For most Europeans, walking from place to place is totally normal and even enjoyable,” Palacios noted. “In Spain, it is very typical to go out for a leisurely stroll, usually in the evening. Even when we go out for tapas or pinchos, there will be walking. You go to one bar, eat something small and then you head to the next one.”

Some American cities, including New York City, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Boston, offer robust public transportation options and a walkable layout. Walking is more common in these cities than in most other American locales.

But as a cultural and practical matter, walking tends to be more prevalent in more European cities than in the United States. Correlated health effects of walking, including weight loss, are therefore to be expected when Americans experience the European lifestyle for any period of time.

Light on Processed Food, Heavy on Nutritional Food Labeling

Observers note that while there is processed food, drive-thru dining, and other nutritional hazards in Europe, their prevalence appears far less than in the United States.

“When you go into an Italian supermarket, you do not find junk food,” O’Leary explains. “They have a couple of brands of chips, and everything else is food you need to cook.”

European shoppers may also be more in tune with what they purchase at the supermarket. Blanca Garcia, a Registered Dietician Nutritionist at Health Canal, explains that several European governments have taken active steps to simplify nutritional literacy through food labeling.

“In the Netherlands, processed and frozen foods are labeled with a grade scale,” Garcia said. “The letter A in green means it’s very healthy, and the letter E is not so healthy, an easy way to recognize what is good or bad.”

Garcia is referring to the Nutri-Score food labeling system, pioneered by French public health agency Santé Publique and used in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and Luxembourg as of January 2023.

Products receive a score ranging between A (most nutritious) and E (least nutritious), and either the producer or seller of the food or beverage affixes a corresponding label to the packaging.

The Government of the Netherlands also passed The National Prevention Agreement in 2019. This legislation urges food manufacturers to reduce the amount of fat, sugar, and sodium in their foods by reformulating processed products.

Such top-down measures aimed at promoting good nutrition also promote the perception that Europe, by and large, offers a healthier dietary landscape than the United States.

Americans who spend time abroad in Europe often notice significant weight loss by the time they return.

Europe Banned Several Ingredients Commonly Found in American Foods

While the typical European walks more and has access to clearer nutritional information than their American counterpart, what about the actual food they eat? Is there something different about pasta one might buy in America, for example, then pasta they’d find in an Italian supermarket?

Possibly.

“The majority of wheat in the U.S. tends to be higher in protein content (often gluten) and is known as hard red wheat,” explained Yelena Wheeler, Registered Dietician at Measurement Instrument Database for the Social Sciences (MIDSS).

“The wheat utilized in Europe is that of soft wheat, which tends to be lower in gluten. For those with gluten sensitivities, consuming bread products with less gluten in them will in turn result in less bloating and sluggishness.”

In addition to differences in the way that food manufacturers source wheat and other ingredients, American food and beverage manufacturers are permitted to use certain ingredients and pesticides that have been banned in the European Union (E.U.).

“Certain hormones such as rBHG are banned in the E.U., however, are allowed in the United States,” Wheeler noted. “Certain pesticides such as Paraquat and Phorate are still being used in the U.S., however, are phased out in the E.U.”

Per the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the E.U. banned titanium dioxide in 2022. Past studies indicate a correlation between titanium dioxide and inflammation, oxidative stress, cell damage, and genotoxicity. Yet, American consumers will find this ingredient listed on a variety of foods and beverages in any given supermarket, from milk to chocolate and snack foods.

By banning titanium dioxide, the E.U. reinforced its commitment to phasing out ingredients with known adverse health effects or whose safety is in question. Other ingredients restricted or banned in the E.U. but not in the United States include potassium bromate and azodicarbonamide (ADA) (used in baked goods but linked to cancer in animal studies),

BHA and BHT (flavoring and preservative substances designated as likely human carcinogens), certain food dyes, and several growth hormones for livestock and other farm animals.

While the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned synthetic flavoring substances and other ingredients over the years, the perception is that regulatory action in the U.S. food and beverage industry is slow-moving and, for many who develop life-threatening health conditions, including obesity, too little too late.

The Verdict

European travelers are often astonished that they can eat what they eat and emerge from their trip pounds lighter than on arrival. Many report walking far more than they would during their typical day in America, and most also report eating fresh, unprocessed foods-even when those foods are ravioli and crème brûlée.

While the European lifestyle of walking from place to place will positively affect weight loss, so may the concerted efforts by European governments and food manufacturers to rid the food supply of potentially harmful ingredients and alert consumers when nonnutritious ingredients are present.

A startling new report may be putting a lot of people on notice.

Without significant action to change this trajectory, more than half the world’s population will be overweight or obese by 2035, according to a new report.

The World Obesity Federation’s 2023 atlas is predicting that 51% of the world, or more than 4 billion people, will be obese or overweight within the next 12 years, according to Reuters.

Obesity rates are rising especially quickly among children and in lower income countries, the report found.

Saying that the data represents a “clear warning,” Louise Baur, president of the World Obesity Federation, said in a statement that policymakers must act with haste to prevent the situation from getting any worse.

Baur is a Sydney, Australia-based academic pediatrician, according to the World Obesity Federation.

“It is particularly worrying to see obesity rates rising fastest among children and adolescents,” she said in a statement.

Childhood obesity could more than double

The new report found that childhood obesity could more than double from 2020 levels — to 208 million boys and 175 million girls by 2035, the group said.

The cost to society, it also said, will be significant due to the health conditions linked to being overweight, as Reuters also reported. 

The author are “calling for a focus on the societal, environmental and biological factors involved in the conditions.”

That cost will be more than $4 trillion annually by 2035, or 3% of global GDP.

The authors pointed out that they’re not blaming anyone — but are “calling for a focus on the societal, environmental and biological factors involved in the conditions,” as Reuters noted.

A 57-year-old man from Nashville, Tennessee, is eating nothing but McDonald’s for 100 days in an unconventional attempt to shed some pounds.

Kevin Maginnis is documenting his journey on his TikTok account at @bigmaccoaching. 

His plan is to order three meals a day from McDonald’s, eat only half of each one — and save the other half for his next meal.

“I woke up this morning and weighed in at 238 pounds,” Maginnis said in his first video on Feb. 21. “I decided that is absolutely unacceptable.”

He added that although many people will think he’s crazy, he’s decided to eat only McDonald’s fast food for the next 100 days — while practicing portion control.

In another TikTok video, Maginnis shared more about his motivation.

“I’m 57 years old. I’ve got kids and grandkids,” he said. 

“I know some overweight 60-year-olds, but I don’t know anyone who’s overweight at 80 years old. I want to be here as long as possible, and I think getting some of this excess weight off is going to help me do that.”

Ten days into his journey, Maginnis has already lost 12-½ pounds, down to 225.5 from 238, he said.

Maginnis also shares videos of his daily weigh-ins, which have shown a consistent downward trend since he started his new diet plan.

Ultimately, Maginnis said he aims to prove that people can lose weight by eating only McDonald’s if they control their portions.

“It’s not so much what we’re eating, but it’s the quantity that we’re eating that really jacks us up,” he added.

Drive-thru diet won’t serve up lasting results, says dietitian

Lindsay Allen, MS, RDN, a Florida-based dietitian specializing in metabolic health and weight loss, sees a couple of key problems with the fast food meal plan. 

“Eventually, the person’s metabolism can drop up to 30% when they restrict calories for too long,” she told Fox News Digital via mail. 

“Then, when the person starts eating normal portions again, they will regain the weight right away. This is exactly why fad diets and calorie-reduction diets fail.”

The second problem, Allen said, is that Maginnis is missing out on key nutrients that the body needs for optimal health, which can lead to heightened food cravings.

“When the brain senses that the body isn’t getting enough key nutrients and minerals, it will ramp up hunger hormones in an attempt to take in more essential nutrients,” she said.

“If you give your body nothing but cheap, processed food, it’s going to sense this and encourage you to take in more food.”

Ultimately, Allen said, Maginnis is simply practicing calorie restriction to prove that weight loss is possible no matter what you eat. “Technically, he’s correct, but this only works short term and will end up in failure down the road.”

Most people may not consider sexual orientation a risk factor for heart disease — but a recent study suggests that bisexual women may have poorer cardiovascular health (CVH) than heterosexual females.

Researchers analyzed data from 12,180 people with an average age of 39.

The data was culled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2016), which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducts.

Individuals were each assigned a CHV score from 0 to 100 (100 being the best) based on their dietary habits and physical exams. 

The scores were based on the American Heart Association’s measure of ideal heart health in U.S. adults.

A score below 50 indicated “poor” cardiovascular health, 50-79 was considered “moderate” and 80 or higher was “high,” per the AHA website.

Pregnant women and individuals with a history of heart disease were excluded from the study.

Bisexual females were about half as likely to receive higher heart health scores than heterosexual females, largely due to “nicotine exposure and higher body mass index.”

The researchers also cited several other factors, including added stress, less sleep and a higher risk of diabetes among bisexual women, according to a press release from the Columbia School of Nursing.

“Cardiac health care providers should ask open-ended questions about sexual orientation and gender identity during the patient’s medical history intake to help identify any risk factors,” a doctor told Fox News Digital. Additionally, bisexual men were found to be twice as likely as heterosexual males to have high blood pressure.

Dr. Billy Caceres, an assistant professor at the Columbia School of Nursing, led the study, which was published in JAMA Cardiology.

Dr. Dung Trinh, chief medical officer of Irvine Clinical Research and a physician with Memorial Care Medical Group in California, was not involved in the study. But he said he believes that health care providers should consider the unique health needs of different sexual orientations when providing care for cardiac disease.

“Cardiac health care providers should ask open-ended questions about sexual orientation and gender identity during the patient’s medical history intake to help identify any risk factors,” Dr. Trinh told Fox News Digital in an email.

Dr. Trinh said the potential impact of “discrimination and stigma on the patient’s mental health and overall well-being” may heighten the risk of cardiovascular disease among bisexual females.

“Doctors should screen for mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, that may impact cardiovascular health, especially among LGBTQ+ individuals who face higher rates of mental illness than the general population,” he added.

The scores were based on the American Heart Association’s measure of ideal heart health in U.S. adults.

A score below 50 indicated “poor” cardiovascular health, 50-79 was considered “moderate” and 80 or higher was “high,” per the AHA website.

Pregnant women and individuals with a history of heart disease were excluded from the study.

Bisexual females were about half as likely to receive higher heart health scores than heterosexual females, largely due to “nicotine exposure and higher body mass index.”

The researchers also cited several other factors, including added stress, less sleep and a higher risk of diabetes among bisexual women, according to a press release from the Columbia School of Nursing.

“Cardiac health care providers should ask open-ended questions about sexual orientation and gender identity during the patient’s medical history intake to help identify any risk factors,” a doctor told Fox News Digital. Additionally, bisexual men were found to be twice as likely as heterosexual males to have high blood pressure.

Dr. Billy Caceres, an assistant professor at the Columbia School of Nursing, led the study, which was published in JAMA Cardiology.

Other participating researchers were from Columbia; the University of California, San Francisco; and the Boston University School of Medicine, among others.

It was titled “Differences in Ideal Cardiovascular Health Between Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Adults.”

Dr. Dung Trinh, chief medical officer of Irvine Clinical Research and a physician with Memorial Care Medical Group in California, was not involved in the study. But he said he believes that health care providers should consider the unique health needs of different sexual orientations when providing care for cardiac disease.

Dr. Trinh said the potential impact of “discrimination and stigma on the patient’s mental health and overall well-being” may heighten the risk of cardiovascular disease among bisexual females.

“Doctors should screen for mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, that may impact cardiovascular health, especially among LGBTQ+ individuals who face higher rates of mental illness than the general population,” he added.

Many of the lifestyle factors impacting cardiovascular health — such as smoking status, alcohol consumption, dietary choices and exercise habits — vary based on a person’s cultural background or sexual orientation, said Dr. Trinh.

“It’s important to educate patients on how their sexual orientation may impact their cardiac disease risk factors and to also stress prevention strategies such as healthy eating habits, regular exercise, stress management techniques, and medication adherence if necessary,” he said.
