MSNBC columnist: Men should get ‘vasectomies’ in response to ‘extreme right-wing minority rule government’

MSNBC columnist Liz Plank wrote an opinion column Tuesday encouraging men to get vasectomies to further the fight for abortion rights.

In her piece, Plank began with some data showing that men’s internet searches for information regarding vasectomies have increased since the Supreme Court draft opinion leaked indicating that Roe v. Wade could be overturned.

She reported, “Data shows daily searches related to vasectomies are up 99 percent and searches for the term ‘how much is a vasectomy’ are up 250 percent.” Plank also observed that Michigan, “one of the 13 states with a trigger law that would automatically ban or severely restrict abortion if the Supreme Court were to go ahead with its leaked decision,” leads in the number of men searching for info on vasectomies.

Plank talked to Manuel Benavides, a family man in Texas with a wife and two kids, who discussed getting a vasectomy with his wife after Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, signed the Texas Heartbeat Bill last year. Once the Court draft opinion leaked, he made up his mind to get one.

He told the author, “My wife has had a negative reaction to the pill, and I don’t think that the responsibility of whether we become pregnant or not should fall on my partner.”

Plank reported men in blue states where abortion is in less danger also “are making the decision to shift the responsibility of family planning onto their bodies.”

She was encouraged that plenty of men seem to support the pro-choice movement. “The presence of men at the various national protests held across the country, highlighted by the hashtag #MenAtTheMarch, reflects Pew Research Center data showing that men tend to be just as supportive as women when it comes to abortion rights,” she wrote.

Plank then mentioned Matthew, a 36-year-old Massachusetts resident she interviewed over email, who described how “he and his wife booked an appointment for a vasectomy last week” because of the leak. He stated, “It really is difficult to emphasize how much the SCOTUS leak changed our trajectory on this. We had joked about scheduling it around a major sporting event, now we just want to get it done as soon as possible.”

“For other men, getting a vasectomy is a way to reclaim their freedom in a country that’s become more and more oppressive, especially for men with intersecting identities,” she wrote, before describing an example of an autistic man who “already feels like his reproductive rights are under threat.”

The gentleman, Mickey Rowe, told her “since my vasectomy was consensual, it was something I was choosing for myself, it felt empowering.”

Plank then scolded men in the U.S. on the vasectomy front, writing, “American men are well behind the rest of the industrialized world when it comes to vasectomies.” She explained that “men in Canada and the U.K. are twice as likely to get vasectomies compared to their female partners getting sterilized, but in America the figures are reversed.”

She followed that up with a strong hint for pro-choice men, “Where gently encouraging men to get vasectomies hasn’t exactly worked, maybe an extreme right-wing minority rule government encoding forced birth into law will.”

“It’s unclear whether this surge in men’s interest in family planning will last, but given that many states have only become more rabidly dystopian in their anti-abortion rights endeavors, it’s at least plausible this is more than just a passing trend,” Plank continued.

“While some ultra-conservatives may have believed banning abortion would lead to more babies, their radical stance may have just encouraged men to go to greater lengths to do the exact opposite,” she wrote, perhaps thinking that getting vasectomies will “own the cons.”

“But in a world where women don’t have a guaranteed constitutional right to access abortion and men don’t have any laws regulating their bodies, the burden of family planning will have to fall on them. If that scares the men who haven’t been showing up to the fight for reproductive justice, they’ll need to put up a bigger fight,” she concluded.

NY Times column says GOP senators compared women to ‘sea turtles’ during abortion debate

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Opinion columnist Gail Collins accused Republican senators of comparing women to sea turtles in a Wednesday op-ed featured in The New York Times, calling out Sens. Steve Daines, R-Mont., and James Lankford, R-Okla., for employing the comparison after she reflected on the sexist rhetoric of her Catholic girls’ school.

“The goal of the Democratic Senate bill was mainly to get the public focused on the reproductive rights issue before the fall elections. And that certainly couldn’t hurt,” she wrote.

“There have to be voters out there who aren’t all that geared up about going to the polls but who might be moved if they got to hear the speech by Republican Steve Daines of Montana that praised anti-abortion laws as being similar to ones ‘that protect the eggs of a sea turtle or the eggs of eagles.'”

Collins noted that the sea turtle comparisons “have been coming up a lot” during abortion debates and criticized the assertion that human babies in the womb should be as valued and protected as the fertilized eggs of endangered animals.

SENATE FAILS TO ADVANCE BILL TO GUARANTEE ABORTION ACCESS NATIONWIDE

”If people call me a radical for believing children are valuable — so be it,” Lankford told a group of pro-choice demonstrators, according to the piece.

Collins said the “radical” label does not come from believing children are valuable but instead from “believing that the reproductive experiences of female water-dwelling reptiles are comparable to the experiences of human beings whose offspring will need and deserve many years of constant care and concern in order to prosper.”

The criticism falls after a lengthy critique of her Catholic girls’ school’s religious – and allegedly sexist – rhetoric which emphasized the need for sex to occur only between married couples, called out abortion for being an act of murder and condemned intimate behaviors between boys and girls.

“I still have a vivid memory of being marched into the auditorium for a lecture from a visiting cleric who assured us that when Jesus was dying on the cross, he was tortured by a vision of the sins of mankind — notably adolescent girls ‘’making out with boys in the back seat of a car,'” she wrote before tying in a comparison to a conservative-majority Supreme Court that, in last week’s leaked draft opinion, caused an uproar with a proposal that would revert abortion policy powers to the states.

“It’s pretty clear where we’re going,” she wrote.

“The Supreme Court’s Trump-constructed majority will reject the by-now-longstanding understanding that a woman has the constitutional right to decide whether she wants to end a pregnancy. In at least 13 states, laws banning abortion could kick into place almost immediately.

“This is the land of my high school religion classes,” she wrote.

Piers Morgan dishes on Taliban interview, says ‘woke’ US corporations silent on misogynist Afghan rulers

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Fox Nation host Piers Morgan spoke to “Hannity” about his recent, contentious interview with Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen, in which Morgan challenged him about Afghanistan’s restrictions on women in school and strict hijab laws.

In clips from the interview, now streaming on Fox Nation, Morgan sparred with Shaheen over what he reported is a near-ban on girls in upper-grade levels.

“The issue of secondary-school education for girls. They are under consideration,” Shaheen replied.

During a back-and-forth about hijab laws, Shaheen claimed many women choose to “observ[e] hijab” while Morgan maintained the body-covering clothing is compulsory under Taliban rule.

Speaking with Hannity, Morgan added that “woke” corporate executives express outrage at certain U.S. education and election policies – but remain largely silent on the atrocities happening in Afghanistan where, as host Sean Hannity reported, many Americans or green-card-holders remain stuck.

“We hear a lot from big corporations like Disney when they want a virtue-signal down in Florida about sex education to young kids, but not a word from them about the oppression of millions of Afghani women in Afghanistan,” he said.

TALIBAN SPOX WARNS US NOT TO ‘INTERFERE’ WITH AFGHAN CULTURE

“Because, of course, it was a Democrat president that created this fiasco [and] that shows a political bias for all these corporations. None of them dare speak out about this kind of thing.”

Hannity agreed, adding that it has been 270 days since Biden “abandoned fellow Americans behind enemy lines … and surrendered to the Taliban.”

Of his interview with Shaheen, Morgan added that he challenged the spokesman on the education policy again in his closing portion, asking if Shaheen’s daughters must abide by the same rules.

Morgan reported that Shaheen is based in Qatar, which has much less restrictive governance.

“I said, do they go to school? – He’s in Doha – Yes, he said, they do,” Morgan recounted.

“And of course, that right there is the hypocrisy, which is riddled through the Taliban ethos. One rule for them [and] their children, another rule for these poor school girls in Afghanistan.”

Morgan concluded that the “catastrophic failure” in Afghanistan will be on Biden’s conscience “for the rest of his life.”

Medical company creates most accurate 3D model of female anatomy ever

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Elsevier has launched “the most advanced 3-D full female model ever available,” according to a recent press release.

“This is the first time that a female model has been built with this level of detail in its entirety, to represent the female — versus replacing specific areas of the male anatomy with female features,” the Elsevier release stated. The company, which is a known leader in publishing research and information analytics, said in the release that this model would help educators for the first time teach, visualize, and edit anatomy entirely from the female perspective using a realistic detailed 3-D model.

Historically, the female anatomy has been underrepresented in the study of the human body and the company said this is a major milestone in equal representation in helping prepare nursing, allied health and medical students with a complete understanding of the female anatomy, the release said.

Elsevier says its 3D female model includes the following clear differences from male anatomy models:

    • The skeletal system will accommodate changes to reflect the boney angles typically seen in the female and will demonstrate differences in areas that differ from males including in the pelvis and skull
    • Accurate portrayal of muscles. The overall volume of muscle mass for each muscle was reduced by approximately 30%, based on research findings comparing male and female demographics.
    • Visually detailed female-specific regions. The female-specific regions have been equally detailed to that of the male. The release stated that breast tissue can be hemisected or quartered to allow the student or instructor to see the underlying tissues with a more accurate distribution and representation of the mammary glands, now shown as nonlactating, unlike most anatomical resources, the release noted. The reproductive organs from the internal and external genitalia have also been remodeled
    • Comparative functionality. The release said that users could switch between the male and female models to allow comparisons throughout the different structures and systems.

“As an advocate for content that is diverse and inclusive, we are thrilled to offer this groundbreaking full female model to allow educators to teach anatomy in an equal and comprehensive way. Complete Anatomy is continuing Elsevier’s rich heritage of innovation in education by delivering on our vision of providing transformative medical education solutions,” Elizabeth Munn, Managing Director, Global Medical Education, Elsevier, said in the release.

Lead subject-matter expert on the update, Yasmin Carter, PhD, Assistant Professor of Translational Anatomy at the UMass Chan Medical School, in Worcester, MA, said in the release, “One of the inherent dangers in using only the male body as ‘anatomical normal’ and the female body as a variation is perpetuating sexist attitudes. This unconscious bias will be carried by learners into their future interactions with the body, including potentially with patients.”

AIR FORCE VET WHO BATTLED TOUGH FERTILITY ISSUE TELLS OTHERS, ‘KNOWLEDGE IS POWER’

Carter also said this model helped create a diverse, balanced, and accurate platform for instructors. Carter said this option would help “evolve equitable teaching practices by normalizing the female body. Complete Anatomy’s female model will support me in training the next generation of medical professionals to be more appropriate and inclusive.”

The report also said the 3-D female anatomy offers educators a more comprehensive teaching approach and gives them the option to switch readily between teaching the female and male anatomy in their curriculum for comparative purposes.

Debra McWilliams, MS, RN, CHSE, is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator and was not involved with the development of this model, but told Fox News that she relies on Artificial intelligence, 3-D technology and other digital platforms to teach nursing and other healthcare professionals at Long Island University’s School of Health Professions and Nursing in Brookville, New York. McWilliams, who is the Director of the Inter professional Simulation Center at the University, told Fox News that, “Elsevier has really looked ahead and created an all-inclusive, diverse and equitable environment in which students can experience excellence in teaching, learning and practice.”

McWilliams also said “Virtual gaming, simulation, and other innovative teaching strategies, such as 3-D anatomical imaging have been able to increase student engagement and buy-in. The future of education requires visionaries and innovators to create engaging interactive environments for this century’s digitally-native generation of learners.”

McWilliams told Fox News that using 3-D anatomy models bridges theory to practice and said the more realistic you can be, the better. The simulation director told Fox News, “I think it will improve patient outcomes because it will help them translate it into the real world.”

The model is part of the company’s app based, 3D platform called Complete Anatomy, which is a top-selling cloud-based medical education app from 3D4 Medical by Elsevier. The model is being used in some first year medical programs in the UK, the release said.

Americans can no longer use lack of proper equipment as an excuse for not working out during the coronavirus pandemic, certified women’s fitness specialist and former “Fox & Friends Weekend” co-host Anna Kooiman said Friday.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends First” with hosts Jillian Mele and Rob Schmitt, Kooiman said that while hosting her “Strong Sexy Mammas program,” a mom was using tins of baby formula to do bicep curls.

“If you’re really desperate, I think people have turned to drinking wine. Probably not the best option for weights. The more likely option is just some cans of soup. So, in your next grocery delivery, get some big cans of soup,” she advised.

Kooiman said that the fitness buffs need to have a “paradigm shift in [their minds]” because there are easy and effective fitness methods to implement inside homes as well.

“You don’t necessarily have to have weights. Dumbbells are not necessary,” she told the “Friends First” hosts. “And, the other thing is, you know you think about back in the 1980’s you could get so many great cardio exercises done with Jane Fonda on an exercise bench. Most of us don’t have one of those, but we do have, say, a fireplace or a skirted bench outside. Just make sure it’s a nice piece of furniture that’s not going to risk falling and you can have at it there as well.”

“I’d say, you know, organize your workout time around your family. You’re homeschooling, you’re working at home, your household duties without a doubt,” Kooiman added, noting that working out with together with family members can be fun.

However, the importance of fitness is not just about physical health — especially during high-stress situations.

“It’s about our mental health too,” Kooiman stated. “Americans, human beings — we’re not meant to be in a cage. We’re meant to get outside.”

“And so, if you can schedule into your routine some sort of activity — I like to do the morning personally because it sets me up for an amazing day and the endorphin rush is kind of that gift that keeps on giving,” she recommended. “My wish to you at home is that you will fit exercise into your life.”

Mississippi governor wants abortions halted during coronavirus outbreak

Mississippi’s only abortion clinic must stop performing the procedures during the coronavirus outbreak because of the state’s temporary ban on elective surgery, Gov. Tate Reeves said Tuesday.

“We’ll take whatever action we need to, to protect not only the lives of unborn children, but also the lives of anyone who may contract this particular virus,” Reeves told reporters at a news conference, according to the Clarion Ledger of Jackson.

The state Department of Health had ordered a halt on elective surgeries as part of efforts to prepare for an expected influx of coronavirus patients, the newspaper reported.

Other states directing abortion clinics to delay procedures during the outbreak included Ohio and Texas.

But Mississippi state Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said he wasn’t prepared to confirm that abortions would be temporarily halted in that state.

“That’s something I was not familiar with,” Dobbs said at the same news conference, according to the Clarion Ledger. “And before I would make any comments, I think we have to review the situation a bit more.”

Reeves, 45, a Republican in his first term as governor after previously serving as lieutenant governor and state treasurer, said he remained committed to someday ending abortion in the state.

“We’re doing everything in our power, and have for many years, to make Mississippi the safest place in America for unborn children,” Reeves said.

Mom, 31, diagnosed with cervical cancer after putting off Pap smear for 10 years

A young Scottish mother who was diagnosed with cervical cancer after putting off a Pap smear for a decade is now urging other women to get the routine test in a bid to save others from a similar diagnosis.

Kim Montgomery, 31, told South West News Service (SWNS), a British news agency, that she put off the test because she had four children “back-to-back.” She decided to go in for a Pap smear after experiencing abnormal bleeding — what can be a sign of cervical cancer — for nine months.

WHAT IS SKIN CANCER? HOW TO SPOT THE SIGNS AND WHEN TO SEEK HELP

“I had the smear test on Dec. 20 and then in the new year I got a letter to say I had abnormal cells,” she said, noting she was formally diagnosed with Stage 2 cervical cancer on Feb. 5.  “I thought right away it was cancer, I just had a feeling, but it wasn’t really until the doctors told me and I broke down.”

Kim Montgomery was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. (SWNS)

“You automatically think you are going to die,” she added. “I didn’t think I was ever going to get cancer — I am only 31.”

Doctors have reportedly told Montgomery that she will likely require chemotherapy and a hysterectomy. She is also awaiting the results from a recent MRI that will show if the cancer has spread to other parts of her body.

“It’s really daunting and I wanted to have more children, but I just feel lucky I have my four,” she said.

“I had been pregnant with my four children back to back for three years and you can’t have a smear test when you are pregnant,” she continued. “That was a huge factor in why I didn’t get one for so long.”

But, she noted, “I also just didn’t realize how important it was.”

Doctors typically recommend women begin Pap smear testing at age 21, according to the Mayo Clinic. The test is then repeated every three years for women ages 21 to 65.

“I want to raise awareness of how important it is for people to have their smear test,” added Montgomery. “I hope sharing my story means more lives can be saved.”

Texas mom loses both feet after high-risk pregnancy complication leads to sepsis

A Texas mother is speaking out after she lost both of her feet and part of her left hand to sepsis after suffering a serious pregnancy complication.

Callie Colwick, 30, of McKinney, found out she and her husband, Kevin, 30, were expecting their second child in November 2016. But at 15 weeks, Callie began experiencing heavy bleeding — what she would later learn was a sign of the high-risk pregnancy complication placenta accreta, which “occurs when the placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall,” as per the Mayo Clinic.

SEPSIS, THE ‘HIDDEN KILLER,’ MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR 1 IN 5 DEATHS WORLDWIDE, STUDY SHOWS

In a healthy pregnancy, the placenta detaches from the uterine wall following childbirth. But with placenta accreta, part or all of the placenta remains attached, which can cause “severe blood loss after delivery,” according to the clinic. Aside from heavy vaginal bleeding, the condition can also lead to premature birth. Most women who are diagnosed with placenta accreta during pregnancy require an early Caesarean section delivery followed by a hysterectomy.

Colwick went to the hospital where she was informed that her unborn son, Quinn, could be born at any time and would likely not survive.

“They put me in the pregnancy wing. Here we were in this room, surrounded by women giving birth and babies crying and we were told that Quinn had no chance of survival and we were just waiting to give birth to him,” she recalled to the British news agency South West News Service (SWNS). “It was a solemn few weeks.”

“It was a terrifying few weeks with nothing to do in the hospital but just wait,” she added.

Eventually, doctors induced labor. Quinn was stillborn, weighing just half a pound.

“They broke my waters and he was born. Quinn was too tiny to survive — he went straight to heaven,” she said.

“I was fading in and out of consciousness [after the stillbirth],” she continued. “I wasn’t responsive, my eyes would roll to the back of my head and I was burning up. My fever had spiked way too high and they were packing ice onto me.”

“My uterus was hemorrhaging blood,” she added, noting her condition was so dire a trauma doctor was flown in from Dallas to help with her case. “Doctors were pumping blood into me as soon as it was flowing out.”

“My husband was stuck between mourning the loss of his son and making all these medical decisions.”

Colwick then developed septic shock in her uterus. The infection later spread throughout her body.

“My world went black. That infection overrode my entire body,” she said. “They had to take out my uterus. The sepsis shut down my kidneys and my lungs so I was on a breathing machine.”

Two months later, severely damaged tissue in both of Colwick’s feet and part of her left hand left doctors no choice but to amputate. Her legs were removed below the knee as was her left thumb and index finger.

“My legs were black and shriveled up, my toes looked like raisins,” she recalled. “I remember coming to, in extreme pain and confusion. My husband had to explain what happened. I had everything minus my uterus and my feet.”

In total, Colwick spent more than a year in intensive care. Finally, in March 2018, she was cleared to return home. After a battle with her insurance company, Colwick was approved for prosthetics in April 2019. She also applied for a custom wheelchair — she was unable to push a standard wheelchair herself, she said — but was denied. A stranger began a viral fundraising campaign to raise enough money for Colwick to purchase a custom wheelchair, a move the mom said changed her life.

“This generous gift from a complete stranger gives me the ability to make my home completely accessible,” she told SWNS.  “It’s a lightweight custom-built chair so I can pick it up by myself. I can actually wheel myself around in it.”

Looking back on the near-death experience, Colwick, who shares her daughter, 4-year-old Kerri, with her husband, said she hopes to “help and inspire others.”

“I was 27 when this happened — no one expects a 27-year-old mom to die,” she added. “I truly feel like I am living on borrowed time now.”
