Manufacturer recalling ‘subpotent’ thyroid tablets, adverse effects reported, FDA says

A manufacturer is recalling thyroid tablets found to be subpotent and with adverse effects, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Acella Pharmaceuticals is recalling two lots of NP Thyroid, which “may have as low as 87% of the labeled amount of levothyroxine,” or less than the required amount, according to the company announcement posted by the FDA.

CDC DELETES CORONAVIRUS AIRBORNE TRANSMISSION GUIDANCE, SAYS UPDATE WAS ‘DRAFT VERSION’

The products may be too weak to fully treat hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), and patients could experience fatigue, constipation, and slow heart rate, among other effects, said the announcement.

There was also said to be a “reasonable risk of serious injury” for newborns and pregnant women with hypothyroidism.

“In elderly patients and patients with underlying cardiac disease toxic cardiac manifestations of hyperthyroidism may occur, such as cardiac pain, palpitations or cardiac arrhythmia,” the announcement reads.

“To date, Acella has received four reports of adverse events for these lot numbers possibly related to this recall,” it said.

The products under the recall are in 100-count bottles; one lot of 15-mg and a second lot of 120-mg NP Thyroid, Thyroid Tablets. Those taking the medication were advised to contact their healthcare provider before stopping use.

Dog food recalled over high levels of mold byproduct: FDA

Heads up, pet owners: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced the voluntary recall of three dog foods over concerns the products contain a mold byproduct that is potentially above acceptable levels.

On Sept. 2, the FDA announced Sunshine Mills’ voluntary recall of the following three dogs foods:

  • Family Pet Meaty Cuts: Beef, Chicken & Cheese Flavors
  • Heartland Farms Grilled Favorites: Beef, Chicken & Cheese Flavor
  • Paws Happy Life Butcher’s Choice Dog Food

DOG FOOD RECALLED OVER SALMONELLA CONCERNS: FDA

The products were called back over concerns they contain above-limit levels of aflatoxin, which the FDA said is a “naturally occurring mold byproduct from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities.”

“The potential for aflatoxin levels above the acceptable limit in these products was discovered by routine sampling performed by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry showing that a sample of a single 4-pound bag of one lot of the product contained elevated levels of aflatoxin,” said the FDA, which noted that no illnesses have occurred in connection to the recalled dog foods.

The recall was issued as a precaution, and no other Sunshine Mills products are affected at this time.

The affected foods were distributed to retailers across the nation, and the FDA is now advising that any retailers who received the products to take them off store shelves. Consumers who purchased one of the recalled products can return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, according to the announcement.

“Pets that have consumed any of the recalled products and exhibit symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, or diarrhea should be seen by a veterinarian,” the FDA said.

Consumers with further questions or concerns can contact the company’s customer service line at (800) 705-2111 or email customer.service@sunshinemills.com.

The recall, announced earlier this month, is the second for Sunshine Mills in recent weeks. In late August, the company issued a voluntary recall over Nature’s Menu Super Premium Dog Food with a Blend of Real Chicken & Quail after a sample of the product tested positive for salmonella.

Dog food recalled over salmonella concerns: FDA

Heads up, pet owners: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration this week (FDA) announced a dog food recall over concerns that a product may be contaminated with salmonella.

Sunshine Mills issued a voluntary recall of Nature’s Menu Super Premium Dog Food with a Blend of Real Chicken & Quail after a sample of the product tested positive for salmonella, a bacteria that “can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” the FDA warned when announcing the recall earlier this week.

CORONAVIRUS PROJECTION FOR US FORECASTS 317,697 DEATHS BY DECEMBER

The company issued the recall after the Georgia Department of Agriculture tested a sample from a single bag of the product, with the sample testing positive for salmonella. No illnesses have been reported to date.

“The firm conducted testing of multiple samples of the same lot which all tested negative for Salmonella. Salmonella may not be evenly distributed throughout a lot which is why it could have been found on one sample and not on multiple other samples of the same lot,” the federal agency explained.

Even so, Sunshine Mills recalled certain lots of the food “out of an abundance of caution.”

SALMONELLA OUTBREAK LINKED TO PEACHES EXPANDS TO 12 STATES

The recalled products, which were distributed to retail stores across the country, can be identified with the UPC 7015514363 and UPC 7015514365. The affected products were sold in 3-pound bags and 13.5-pound bags.

The product comes in a 3-pound bag with the following lot codes:

  • TE1 20/April /2020, TE1 21/April/2020, TE1 22/April/2020, TE2 20/April /2020, TE2 21/April/2020,
  • TE2 22/April/2020, TE3 20/April/2020, TE3 21/April/2020, TE3 22/April/2020.

The product’s 13.5-pound bags have the following lot codes:

  • TB1 20/April /2020, TB1 21/April/2020, TB1 22/April/2020, TB2 20/April /2020, TB2 21/April/2020,
  • TB2 22/April/2020, TB3 20/April/2020, TB3 21/April/2020, TB3 22/April/2020.

Pets infected with salmonella can be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.

“Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” the FDA said in announcing the recall.

In humans, salmonella infections usually result in stomach cramps, fever, and diarrhea up to six days after exposure. While most people recover without treatment, sometimes severe illnesses require hospitalization because the infection can spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then elsewhere in the body.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends seeing your healthcare provider over concerning symptoms like high fever (above 102°F), blood in diarrhea and stool, or frequent vomiting.

Contigo recalls kids water bottles over possible choking hazard — again

Contigo announced it’s calling back nearly 6 million kids water bottles over a potential choking hazard. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on Wednesday, comes after the water bottles were subject to a recall in August for the same reason.

In a notice posted to its website, the safety commission said Contigo Kids Cleanable water bottles and the replacement lids sent to consumers following the initial recall in August are being called back because the bottle’s “clear silicone spout can detach, posing a choking hazard to children.”

FOOD SAFETY ANALYSIS FINDS MEAT, POULTRY RECALLS REMAIN ‘SKY-HIGH’

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled water bottles and the replacement lids provided in the previous recall, take them away from children, and contact Contigo for a free water bottle. Consumers who received replacement lids in the previous recall should contact Contigo for the new water bottle,” says the recall notice.

The callback was initiated after Contigo received 427 reports of the spout detaching, “including 27 spouts found in children’s mouths.”

MORE THAN 2,000 POUNDS OF GROUND BEEF RECALLED OVER PLASTIC CONTAMINATION CONCERNS

The water bottles affected by the recall have a black colored spout base and spout cover. The bottles come in three sizes – 13 ounces, 14 ounces and 20 ounces – and four colors: “solid color, graphics, stainless steel, and stainless steel colors,” as per the recall notice. The bottles were sold individually and in two and three-packs online and at major retailers such as Costco, Target and Walmart between April 2018 through Feb. 7.

More than 2,000 pounds of ground beef recalled over plastic contamination concerns

A Chicago-based company is recalling more than 2,000 pounds of raw ground beef over plastic contamination concerns.

FOOD SAFETY ANALYSIS FINDS MEAT, POULTRY RECALLS REMAIN ‘SKY-HIGH’

In a notice posted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspections Service (FSIS), officials said Amity Packing Company is calling back some 2,020 pounds of beef after “clear, thin pliable plastic” was found in the product. The recall was sparked after at least two consumers reported finding plastic in the raw beef.

The meat was shipped to retail locations in various states, including Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, according to the FSIS. No adverse reactions have been reported at this time.

The affected products, which were produced on Jan. 6, have a “best by” date of Jan 31, 2020. The products were packaged in one-pound vacuum-packed packages and bear the lot code 0060 and case code 11402. The establishment number — EST. 6916 — can be found in the right, front side of the package. Product labels can be found here.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers,” officials said. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

Food safety analysis finds meat, poultry recalls remain ‘sky-high’

How do I know if I have salmonella

Q&A with Dr. Manny: Since coming back from vacation, I’ve had diarrhea and cramps. How do I know I have salmonella versus some other gastrointestinal condition?

An analysis of food recalls issued in 2019 suggests that a gap between regulatory agencies may contribute to the number of contaminated foods still reaching consumers’ plates.

In its second annual “How Safe is Our Food” report issued by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund, analysts looked at a recall involving Tyson chicken strip products and another concerning Romaine lettuce in an attempt to determine where improvements could be made.

DO I HAVE SALMONELLA? WHEN TO CALL THE DOCTOR

“This year, we see an even clearer trend that there’s a divergence between food overseen by the USDA and the FDA,” Adam Garber, head of PIRG’s Consumer Watchdog team, told Fox News. “It’s a complicated division of labor between the two agencies.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 48 million people, or one in six, are sickened every year by foodborne illnesses, accounting for 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths.

Garber noted that while the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act, which applies to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has helped cut down on the amount of hazardous food being sold by 34 percent, recalls in meat and poultry, overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), remain “sky-high.”

The analysis found that the most hazardous meat and poultry recalls have nearly doubled with an 85 percent increase since 2013, which marks a slight increase from 2018. Companies also reported recovering an average of 16 percent of recalled meat and poultry in completed recalls between 2013 and 2019.

NUMBER ONE FOOD THAT CAUSES FOOD POISONING

The analysis also pointed out that nearly all of the recalls initiated through the FDA are voluntary and come from the manufacturers and distributors. Additionally, outdated factory machines and slow-moving regulatory guidelines involving water systems may also be contributing to the number of recalls issued each year.

While Garber acknowledges that it’s “not realistic that we’ll remove every source of contamination and there will never be a recall,” he said his team’s analysis highlights the need for tighter regulations and less disparity between the governing agencies.

But until that happens, he said it’s up to the consumer to be proactive in order to prevent contaminated foods from reaching their plate.

“You have to take it upon yourself to stay up-to-date on recalls,” he said, adding that while media outlets cover larger recalls, there may be small, local ones that go unnoticed. He suggested checking in with local retailers to ensure products being sold are not part of the recall.

He said it’s also important to follow food-safety guidelines, such as washing produce and cooking meat and poultry thoroughly. However, he acknowledges that it’s not always possible to catch the microscopic organisms that may make you ill, which is why it’s important for regulatory measures to be enforced.

“Food recalls indicate where the problems are and where we should put energy into making our food safer,” he said. “When we implement protections, they work, and when we leave them on the store shelf, people get hurt.”

Lipari Foods recalls sandwiches amid Listeria concerns

The company behind a line of grab-and-go sandwiches has expanded a recall over concerns that the products may be contaminated with Listeria. Lipari Foods said the recall impacts several sandwiches sold under its “Fresh Grab” and “Premo” line of products.

Specifically, the recall includes “Fresh Grab” Breakfast Muffin Sandwich and “Fresh Grab” Chicken & Swiss Sandwich, while impacted products sold under the “Premo” label include Meat Lover’s Sub, Pub Burger, Turkey & Cheese on Pretzel Sub, Turkey & Swiss Sandwich and Turkey & Garlic Mayo Sandwich.

AMERICANS DRINKING MORE NOW THAN JUST BEFORE PROHIBITION

According to the recall notice posted on the FDA website, recalled products were distributed by Lipari Foods, located in Warren Michigan, to stores in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin. All products began shipping to retailers on Jan. 3, are marked with a “Best By” date of either 1/21/2020 or 1/23/2020.

The update expands on a recall issued earlier this month, which included several other of the company’s “Fresh Grab” and “Premo” products.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people or those with weakened immune systems. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Sickened individuals may experience high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Select egg salad and potato salad products sold at Trader Joe’s are being pulled from the shelves amid a larger recall involving Georgia-produced hard-boiled eggs that have been linked to a Listeria outbreak that’s tied to at least one death. Bakkavor Foods USA Inc. said the voluntary recall affects Trader Joe’s Egg Salad, 6 oz and Trader Joe’s Old Fashion Potato Salad, 20 oz marked with “use by dates” through 12/27.
