CNN will ‘reimagine’ long-struggling morning show ‘New Day,’ CEO says

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

CNN’s long-struggling morning show “New Day” could be circling the drain, or maybe just headed for a rebrand. Either way, changes are coming.

New CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht addressed the network’s ratings-challenged morning show on Wednesday during the Warner Bros. Discovery upfront event at New York City’s Hulu Theater, and he didn’t sound thrilled with the status quo of the morning program he inherited.

“Here are some specifics we are planning for the fall. First, we will reimagine our morning show, leveraging our correspondents and unmatched resources in the U.S. and around the world to provide news that viewers need to know as they start their day,” Licht said during the presentation to advertisers.

‘THE FIVE’ HELPS FOX NEWS CRUSH CABLE NEWS COMPETITORS FOR 65TH STRAIGHT WEEK

“I’m going to be honest here. We are seeking to be a disruptor of the broadcast morning shows in this space, and we believe we have the people and resources who can do it,” Licht added before pivoting to other programs.

CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht announced he would “reimagine” his network’s struggling morning show.  (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Licht didn’t refer to the morning show by its current name during the announcement but stopped short of providing details of the “reimagined” program. He is expected to work with “New Day” executive producer Eric Hall to determine how CNN’s morning lineup can be more successful going forward.

When Licht first addressed CNN staffers after being tabbed to replace Jeff Zucker, who was forced to resign earlier this year, he suggested some of the network’s beleaguered programs wouldn’t stick around much longer.

“Together, we will double down on what’s working well and quickly eliminate what’s not,” he wrote in a memo to CNN employees.

REP. BYRON DONALD’S OFFICE: ‘WHITE LIBERALS’ LIKE CNN’S BRIANNA KEILAR ‘CAN’T COMPREHEND’ BLACK REPUBLICANS

“New Day” is among the CNN programs that haven’t been “working well,” as the morning offering has failed to resonate with viewers since its 2013 launch.

“New Day” has been one of CNN’s least-watched programs this month and has shed 31% of its April audience. It’s averaged a dismal 395,000 viewers in May to rank as the No. 41 cable news program, despite its desirable timeslot.

Brianna Keilar has developed a reputation for conducting combative interviews with Republicans.  (Screenshot/CNN)

“New Day” has also been dreadful among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25-54, averaging only 85,000 viewers for a 35% drop from last month alone.

CNN did not immediately respond to a series of questions, including whether the retooled morning show would keep the “New Day” branding and whether current hosts John Berman and Brianna Keilar would be part of it.

REP. BYRON DONALDS TEARS INTO CNN, BRIANNA KEILAR FOLLOWING TENSE INTERVIEW: ‘THEY HAVE A POLITICAL AGENDA’

“New Day” was the brainchild of Zucker, who rose to prominence overseeing NBC’s “Today” during the Matt Lauer era and quickly attempted to replicate the morning success at CNN.”

Zucker took over CNN in January 2013 and created “New Day” with hand-picked anchors Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan, and Michaela Pereira. It debuted that June with hopes it would emerge as a flagship morning program akin to NBC’s highly successful “Today,” but with edginess that could only happen on cable. Broadcast production trade publications fawned over the elaborate set design, and CNN even recruited pop music superstar Alicia Keys to perform a promo jingle ahead of its premiere.

However, Zucker’s morning show success didn’t repeat itself and “New Day,” which has never managed to averaged even 700,000 viewers for a year, settled for an average audience of only 471,000 during the first quarter of 2022. Viewership has continued to slide, with only 418,000 people tuning in each morning so far during the second quarter and only 388,000 last week.

Along the way, “New Day” has become infamous for ratings issues and lineup changes. Cuomo, Bolduan and Pereira have been gone from the program for the years. Longtime co-anchor Alisyn Camerota was replaced last year by the outspokenly liberal Keilar, who now shares the anchor desk with Berman.

‘SORRY STATE OF AFFAIRS’ AT CNN AMID RATINGS WOES, AND LOOMING REGIME CHANGE AND ‘SUBOPTIMAL’ STREAMER

Licht’s re-imagining of Keilar and Berman’s morning program was vague, but it appears certain that changes are looming.

Berman, who moved to the anchor chair when Cuomo was promoted to primetime by Zucker, is a favorite of CNN rank-and-file staffers. He regularly fills in for Anderson Cooper’s “AC 360,” an indication that network honchos see him as a versatile anchor capable of stepping into other roles.

Keilar, on the other hand, has developed a reputation for conducting combative interviews with conservatives and non-White Republicans that have scolded her for talking down to them. Last year, she irked Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., during an interview about the Congressional Black Caucus snubbing him despite his vocal interest in joining the group of Black lawmakers by fixating on his past support for former President Trump.

CNN’s “New Day” has averaged a dismal 395,000 viewers in May to rank as the No. 41 cable news program. (CNN screenshot )

“The people at CNN, they have an agenda, they have a political agenda. Let’s be very clear,” Donalds told Fox News Digital last year when asked about the interview.

Keilar also faced criticism for attacking Nikki Haley – an Indian-American – when the former United Nations ambassador declared “America is not a racist country.” Keilar dedicated an entire monologue in her “Roll the Tape” segment to rebuking Haley’s defense of America.

Republican Senate candidate T.W. Shannon told Fox News Digital last month that he’s unsure Licht could restore CNN’s journalistic credibility because of the way Keilar treated him during a 2021 interview. Shannon, who is Black, also appeared on “New Day” and was scolded by Keilar over his past support of Trump.

“I’ve never been more disrespected, or talked down to, and told why I was oppressed and why I should feel oppressed in America,” Shannon explained. “A lot of African Americans refuse to go on that show, and I’m one of them. I would never go on her show again. CNN should be ashamed and embarrassed for allowing her to spew her hatred.”

Licht is no stranger to morning programs, as he was the founding executive producer of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and later oversaw the launch of “CBS This Morning.” He has claimed that CNN will distance itself from the left-leaning, advocacy programming that was established under Zucker.

MSNBC’s ‘The Rachel Maddow Show’ continues to suffer as namesake host’s initial extended hiatus wraps up

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow is expected to return to her show Monday on the heels of a hiatus that saw her program collapse as the network struggled to replace its only primetime star.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” is on pace for its smallest weekly audience since 2016, according to Nielsen Media Research ratings.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” has been without its namesake host since February, when she announced a several-week hiatus to work on other projects. Maddow, who reportedly earns $30 million annually, ended up missing a significant news cycle, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show” has struggled without its namesake host.

The week of April 4 through 8 is on pace to be the lowest-rated week for “The Rachel Maddow Show” since 2016, averaging only 1.3 million viewers through Thursday’s episode. The last time “Maddow” had a smaller average audience was the week of Dec. 26, 2016.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” averaged 2.7 million viewers during the same dates in 2021 when MSNBC’s cash cow was present and averaged 2 million nightly viewers during January 2022 before Maddow stepped aside.

During the host’s lengthy absence, MSNBC continued to brand its 9 p.m. hour as “The Rachel Maddow Show.” It lost a staggering 40% of its viewers compared to the last week that Maddow actually hosted it.

FOX NEWS CRUSHES CNN, MSNBC TO FINISH WITH CABLE NEWS’ LARGEST AUDIENCE FOR 81ST STRAIGHT QUARTER

Maddow was replaced by a rotation pool of hosts, with Ali Velshi filling in on a frequent basis. None of the replacements resonated with viewers, prompting media insiders to take notice of MSNBC’s alarmingly shallow bench.

MSNBC reportedly faces a “crisis” if Maddow decides to permanently abandon the coveted timeslot, according to Puck’s Dylan Byers.

Rachel Maddow ditched MSNBC for several week to work on other projects.

During Maddow’s absence, her show averaged 1.6 million viewers compared to 3.1 million for Fox News’ “Hannity,” which airs in the same 9 p.m. ET timeslot.

Replacement hosts also struggled among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults ages 25-54, as “The Rachel Maddow Show” settled for only 214,000 average viewers among the key category from Feb. 7 through April 7 while “Hannity” attracted 533,000 average demo viewers during the same time period.

CNN’s long-struggling 9 p.m. offerings — hosted by Anderson Cooper and Don Lemon — even managed to beat “Maddow” in the critical category, averaging 293,000 demo viewers during her hiatus.

“The Rachel Maddow Show” finished the first quarter of 2022 as MSNBC’s most-watched program despite the namesake’s extended absence, but finished behind 10 different Fox News offerings.

Maddow typically finished among the most-popular cable news programs during her glory days when the Russian collusion narrative dominated liberal media in the early years of former President Donald Trump’s presidency.

While Maddow is coming back to rescue her beleaguered program, MSNBC executives are presumably on tilt as she has hinted at other extended absences in the near future. It has been reported that she’s looking to scale back or even exit her daily program because of professional burnout.

“We’re just taking it one step at a time,” Maddow told viewers in February.

Grammys barely move the needle in television ratings

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Despite a night of feel-good vibes and performances by the music industry’s top acts, the Grammy Awards barely moved the needle as a television attraction.

The show reached just under 9.6 million viewers on Sunday, the Nielsen company said. That’s a 4% increase over 2021’s broadcast, a more intimate affair because of the pandemic, and the smallest-ever audience for the Grammys by a wide margin.

Any year-to-year viewership increase is usually a cause for celebration in today’s television world. But that has to be considered a disappointing showing when you consider the previous week’s Academy Awards increased its audience by 58% over 2021.

Jon Batiste was the biggest winner at the Grammys on CBS, which featured performances by Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, BTS, Chris Stapleton, Justin Bieber and others.

New low for CNN’s ‘New Day’ as morning show continues to struggle

    Media top headlines October 5

In media news today, left-leaning news outlets justify protestors harassing Krysten Sinema in a public bathroom, Anthony Fauci clarifies his remarks on Christmas gatherings, and GOP Senate candidate Sam Brown fires back at Twitter as tech giant admits his account was banned by ‘mistake’

CNN’s long-struggling morning show “New Day” continues to hamper the liberal network with disappointing viewership, hitting a new low last week.

“New Day” averaged only 346,000 viewers on Friday to kick off the fourth quarter of 2021 with its lowest-rated program of the year after a dismal summer.

CNN’s morning show “New Day” has struggled to attract viewers since Brianna Keilar joined the program in April.

“New Day” recently finished the third quarter with its smallest audience since 2014. The hapless morning show averaged only 444,000 viewers to finish as the No. 42 cable news program, behind dozens of Fox News and MSNBC offerings that air during less desirable timeslots.

CNN’s flagship morning show also had a hard time attracting viewers from the category most coveted by advertisers during the third quarter. “New Day” averaged only 90,000 viewers in the key news demographic of adults age 25-54, finishing as the No. 39 cable news program in the crucial category.

FOX NEWS CHANNEL WILL MARK 25TH ANNIVERSARY ATOP BASIC CABLE AFTER DOMINANT THIRD QUARTER

The trend continued to Friday, as “New Day” attracted only 59,000 viewers from the advertiser-coveted demo on October 1.

“New Day” was supposed to emerge as CNN’s prize program when CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker launched it in 2013, shortly after he took control of the network. Broadcast production trade publications praised the show’s elaborate set design and CNN even enlisted pop music superstar Alicia Keys to perform a promo jingle ahead of its widely publicized debut.

Zucker, who was once considered a morning show guru for his time running NBC’s “Today,” has been unable to replicate the success at CNN.

CNN BOSS JEFF ZUCKER, FORMER KING OF MORNING SHOWS, CAN’T FIX ‘NEW DAY’ DISASTER

“New Day” has relaunched with new anchors multiple times and struggled to gain relevancy. Original hosts Chris Cuomo, Kate Bolduan and Michaela Pereira are gone, and longtime co-anchor Alisyn Camerota was replaced earlier this year by outspoken Brianna Keilar, who now shares the anchor desk with John Berman.

Keilar has become known for a partisan approach that is typically reserved for primetime opinion programming. In April, executive producer Eric Hall told Variety that the morning show would play to Keilar’s strengths.

“Being blunt, being candid … calling a spade a spade,” Hall said when explaining his vision for the relaunched program.

Keilar’s style hasn’t resonated with potential “New Day” viewers despite Zucker’s most recent attempt to resuscitate his struggling morning program.

Fox News celebrates 25 years since Rupert Murdoch’s vision debuted on air

Many were skeptical when Rupert Murdoch announced his vision for Fox News Channel a few months before it launched on October 7, 1996.

“I would just like to say how delighted I am that we have now reached this moment, and we can firmly announce the starting of a FOX News Channel and a much greater effort on the buildup of Fox News in every area,” Murdoch told the assembled media during a dimly lit press conference on January 30, 1996.

Rupert Murdoch announced his vision for Fox News Channel a few months before it launched in 1996.

At the time, FOX had seen phenomenal growth in entertainment programming, children’s content and in sports offerings, but the company lacked a relevant news organization. CNN dominated cable news back then, largely because of a lack of competition, but Murdoch predicted that would change once Fox News Channel made its debut.

“We now see a fairly defined audience in numbers for CNN,” Murdoch said. “I think you will find as more news channels, and particularly our news channel, appear the audience will increase greatly.”

FOX NEWS CHANNEL WILL MARK 25TH ANNIVERSARY ATOP BASIC CABLE AFTER DOMINANT THIRD QUARTER

The move was both costly and risky and while Murdoch expected success, critics weren’t exactly confident the upstart network would work out. Reporters immediately asked Murdoch why he felt another news network would succeed, and others quickly predicted failure.

“Some in the industry believe that either MSNBC or the Fox all-news station will survive in the long run, but not both,” Reuters reporter Michael Connor wrote at the time.

Some cable providers initially refused to even carry Fox News.

A quarter century later, it turns out Murdoch was onto something and Fox News Channel is on pace to finish as the No. 1 cable news network for the 20th straight year.

Fox News is also on pace to finish 2021 as the most-watched network across all of basic cable for the sixth straight year. Since Murdoch’s network started being rated on March 31, 1997, it has topped CNN by 68% among total viewers and 31% among the key news demographic of adults age 25-54.

MSNBC, which also launched in 1996, trailed Fox News viewership by a staggering 104% over the past 25 years among total viewers and 74% among the demo coveted by advertisers.

During the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m., Fox News has outdrawn CNN by 86% and MSNBC by 110% since March 1997.

Fox News recently finished the third quarter as the most-watched network in all of basic cable among both total day and primetime viewers. It has now topped cable news for 79 straight quarters and often beats CNN and MSNBC combined in key measurables.

In recent years, Fox News has gained in popularity online, too.

Fox News has remained the most engaged news brand across social media channels for nearly seven straight years. Fox News Digital topped CNN in multiplatform minutes and multiplatform views during the month of July to finish as the No. 1 news brand, according to Comscore.

‘The Talk’ ratings plunge to lowest daytime program following Sharon Osbourne’s exit

“The Talk” suffered a significant dip in ratings among daytime programs following Sharon Osbourne‘s exit from the show.

The CBS talk show returned to its regular programming schedule on April 12, following a nearly month-long hiatus after an on-air spat between Osbourne and co-host Sheryl Underwood resulted in the former reality star leaving the show for good.

The Soap Opera Network reports that the ratings for “The Talk” during the week of April 12-16 dipped to the No. 13 spot, the last place on the list, in both the Women 18-49 demographic (a 0.23 rating) and the Women 25-54 demographic (a 0.35 rating).

But the outlet notes it had “sustained” this spot, meaning ratings already had plummeted prior to Osbourne’s departure.

Shakeup at “The Talk” first took place back on March 10, when Osbourne was locked in a heated discussion about race, spurred by her previous support Piers Morgan after he left “Good Morning Britain” over differing opinions about Meghan Markle following the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry‘s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The debate prompted CBS to launch an internal investigation into the episode, and it was placed on hiatus more than once.

In the first episode since its return, Underwood, 57, opened up about the “trauma” she said she’s been dealing with amid her public fallout with Osbourne, 68, but noted that she was eager to get back in front of the show’s devoted audience to explain her side of the matter.

CARRIE ANN INABA TO TAKE LEAVE OF ABSENCE FROM ‘THE TALK’ TO FOCUS ON ‘WELLBEING’

“I feel like I’ve been in, like, PTSD because it was a trauma,” Underwood explained. “And I feel like I want to get past this because I really wanted to get back to work with my friends and my colleagues and the crew … but I also wanted to get back to the audience.”

The comedian also leaned into the issues at hand and told viewers that she and the remaining members of “The Talk” would “honestly discuss what occurred and explore some of our feelings,” adding that the crew would “also show you how anyone can become more comfortable discussing important issues and having difficult conversations.”

Underwood lamented that she feared being seen by others as “the angry black woman” and thus, chose to keep calm during the heated exchange with Osbourne.

Meanwhile, just this week, co-host Carrie Ann Inaba announced she is taking a leave of absence to focus on her wellbeing. The star, 53, did not disclose any additional details, including how long her leave will be in effect or what health struggles she may be facing. In the past, Inaba has been open about her struggles with Sjögren’s Syndrome, fibromyalgia, Lupus and more.

Her temporary departure leaves “The Talk” with only three co-hosts following Sharon Osbourne’s recent exit. Underwood, 57, will remain on air with Amanda Kloots and Elaine Welteroth.

Fox’s virtual Texas NASCAR race sets esports record with 1.3 million viewers

NASCAR’s virtual racing series set a new record on Sunday, pulling in 1.3 million total viewers across Fox and FS1 to become the highest-rated televised esports event ever.

The Texas Motor Speedway round of the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitation Series was won by NASCAR Cup driver Timmy Hill and handily outdrew the previous round’s record-setting draw of 910,000 viewers for the Homestead-Miami race, which was broadcast only on FS1.

According to Nielsen, the Texas race was the most-watched sports broadcast of the day and second for the week, behind Fox’s WWE Smackdown on Friday night. Approximately 3.65 million viewers tuned into the conventional Texas NASCAR race on Fox last March.

The online simulation racing series features many full-time NASCAR Cup drivers and will continue until the suspended season returns, which won’t happen before May 9. The next round at the digital version of Bristol Motor Speedway is scheduled for Sunday, April 2 at 1 pm ET.
