Test drives: The 2020 Nissan Versa and Sentra are fighting the good fight for cars

Nissan isn’t giving up … on cars.

The beleaguered automaker will soon be one of the few mainstream brands with a full lineup of four subcompact to full-size sedans amid a sea of SUVs, of which it now has six.

It still sees plenty of opportunity in a segment that accounts for over four million U.S. sales annually and has seen the departure of many model lines in recent years.

    (Nissan)

Nissan’s latest four-doors are all-new versions of the Versa and Sentra, and they’re not the economy cars they used to be. They’re still affordable, with starting prices of $15,655 and $20,015, but Nissan stepped up the refinement in a big way to shed them of their fleet car reputations. Considering the Versa is the cheapest sedan on sale today, that’s no small task.

The Versa and Sentra are lower and wider than the cars they replace. They share the same design language as the midsize Nissan Altima and could pass for it from a short distance. This is known as the Russian Doll effect in the car biz and is meant to give lower-end models a boost.

The all-new high tech 2020 Nissan Versa features Nissan Safety Shield 360 and a new design with lower, wider and longer exterior dimensions.

They also feature better than expected style and trim inside, with wrapped dashboards and high-quality upholstery. The diamond-stitched leather in the Sentra SV is a particularly upscale touch.

The Sentra has a tablet-style infotainment system screen.
    (Nissan)

    (Nissan)

Simple, effective control layouts are complemented by touchscreen infotainment systems equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in all but the entry-level models. There’s no built-in navigation, so Apple Maps and Google Maps are the ways to go. Waze, too.

The Versa offers the same level of tech as the Sentra.
    (Nissan)

Front and rear automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning systems with backup cameras are standard, and adaptive radar cruise control is available in both.

The compact Sentra is powered by a 149 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired to a CVT automatic transmission, while the smaller Versa has a 122 hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder that comes with a 5-speed manual and gets a CVT added in upper trims. With the CVT, the Versa is good for 40 mpg on the highway and the Sentra 39 mpg.

Overall, the Sentra is a solid performer that can hold its own with the Toyota Corolla. It’s not quite as engaging to drive as a Honda Civic, but the comfort and handling balance is spot on. Then there’s the Versa.

    (Nissan)

The old one was loud, cheaply built, skittish and…loud. Its most redeeming quality was how large it was for the price, right there with the more expensive Sentra. Nissan must’ve figured out that was an issue because the 2020’s cabin isn’t as impressive.

    (Nissan)

But everything else is much more so: the ride, the steering, the five-star crash test rating, the sound insulation and the killer stereo that you get in the top of the line SR, in case you still want to drown things out. All top-notch. Well, except for the center armrest, which is a $300 option and doesn’t line up at the same height as the one on the door.

    (Fox News Autos)

One splurge that probably isn’t worth it, but is uniquely cool, is a $690 kit that adds ambient interior lighting and puddle lamps under the rocker panels, which create that underglow effect the “Fast and Furious” scene used to be into.

Neither of those “F” words describes the Versa, but if anyone gave out an award for the most improved vehicle it would win by unanimous vote. If fact, consider it done … by me.

    The lowest-priced pickups in America

The average transaction price for a full-size pickup was over $50,000 last year, according to Kelly Blue Book, and even midsize trucks were selling for $35,000.

Bargain shoppers can still find a deal, however, if they’re willing to live with a good old fashioned basic truck.

Here are the cheapest currently on sale:

    Midsize: Nissan Frontier

    (NIssan)

    $20,385

Fundamentally unchanged since 2004, the Nissan Frontier is the lowest-priced pickup if you check the right options boxes.

That is to say, if you don’t check any of them.

A two-wheel-drive King Cab comes with a five-speed manual transmission, a 152 hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and an AM/FM stereo with four speakers and Bluetooth for you high tech folks. You’ll want to get it while it’s cheap, though, because later this year the Frontier is dropping the four-cylinder in favor of a new standard V6 and a fully redesigned truck is finally on the way in 2021.

Full-size light duty: Ram 1500 Classic

    (Ram)

    $29,340

When Ram introduced an all-new 1500 pickup for 2019, it decided to keep building the old version as a discount option called the Classic. It’s available in a variety of configurations that start at $29,340 for a two-door Tradesman work truck powered by a V6 engine that can be upgraded to a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 395 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque for $1,495, which makes it the cheapest V8-powered vehicle of any kind you can buy today.

Full-size heavy duty: Ford F-Series Super Duty

    (Ford)

    $35,300

The regular cab F-250 offers an 8-foot bed and 6.2-liter V8 rated at 385 hp 6.2-liter V8 430 lb-ft for $35,300, which is a far cry from the top of the line F-450 Limited that can be optioned up to close to $100,000.

Fugitive Carlos Ghosn working with Michael Ovitz to field movie, TV deals

    Carlos Ghosn is going Hollywood.

The embattled automotive executive who fled from house arrest in Japan and secretly traveled to Lebanon in an elaborate escape straight out of a blockbuster thriller has enlisted the services of super talent agent Michael Ovitz to help him tell — and sell — his story.

A Ghosn representative told Reuters that Ovitz would help evaluate any proposals, but that nothing is currently firmed up.

Ghosn wore a disguise when he was transferred from jail to house arrest after posting bail.

Ovitz co-founded the Creative Artists Agency that represented actors like Tom Cruise and Sylvester Stallone during the 1980s and 1990s big-budget blockbuster heyday, and was briefly president of Disney. His career was tarnished in 2002 when he blamed a “gay cabal” in the movie industry for ruining some of his deals in a Vanity Fair interview, a comment he later apologized for.

Former Nissan Chairman Ghosn had been under arrest on corporate corruption charges for over a year when he allegedly was snuck through airport security in a case and onto a private plane that brought him to Lebanon in a plan hatched by a former Green Beret. According to Reuters, he forfeited $14 million in bail money when he left the country.

Ghosn has not confirmed all of the details of his extraction, but told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo that he was not hidden in a box.

Nissan Frontier gets new V6 ahead of full redesign next year

The oldest vehicle design you can buy new in the U.S. is getting a transplant to extend its life just one more year.

    (Nissan)

The Nissan Frontier pickup, which dates back to 2004, is getting a new 3.8-liter V6 for the 2020 model year. The engine will also feature in the all-new Frontier set to debut in 2021.

    (Nissan)

The 310-hp engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and will be the only powertrain available, replacing both the 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 4.0-liter V6 currently offered in the midsize truck.

CHICAGO MAN DROVE HIS NISSAN FRONTIER 1 MILLION MILES SINCE 2007

Aside from the engine swap and a few trim updates, the 2020 Frontier remains largely the same and will continue to be produced in King Cab and Crew Cab models.

    (Nissan)

Nissan has yet to reveal any details about the all-new Frontier coming next year, and pricing for the 2020 model will be released closer to when it goes on sale this spring.

Chicago man drove his Nissan Frontier pickup over 1 million miles

It’s a little truck with a lotta miles on it.

    (Nissan)

Brian Murphy started a delivery business in the Chicago area in 2007 and has used the same Nissan Frontier pickup ever since, driving it one million miles along the way.

It’s a two-wheel-drive King Cab that still has its original four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. Murphy said the clutch lasted over 800,000 miles, outliving the driver’s seat that he replaced at half a million miles.

    (Nissan)

The only other major work he’s had done was getting a new timing chain installed at 750,000 miles, even though it didn’t need one, and replacing radiator and alternator.

Perhaps more impressive, Murphy’s driving record has remained spotless as long as he’s had the truck.

The odometer stopped working at 999,999, but the trip odometer can be reset, allowing him to continue keeping track of the miles as he broke the million-mile mark this week.

    (Nissan)

Nissan has invited Murphy and his truck to an event being held in conjunction with the Chicago Auto Show, suggesting it may have some Frontier news to share.

The current Frontier has been on sale with only minor updates since 2004, making it the “oldest” new truck you can buy.

    (Nissan)

But while Murphy may have the record for putting the most miles on a Frontier, he’s got a way to go for the all-time mark held by Irv Gordon.

Gordon drove his Volvo P1800 S more than 3.2 million miles from the day he bought it in 1966 until he died in 2018.

This car brand logo is the most recognizable in America, survey says

New Mercedes-Benz G550 looks very old

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550 looks just like the 1970’s model it replaces, but looks can be deceiving. Fox News Autos editor Gary Gastelu says the high-tech SUV is bigger and better than the original G.

Spoiler alert: Ford beats Ferrari, and not just in the Oscar-nominated film.

    But Benz beats them both.

A survey conducted by the marketing products company Promotique by Vistaprint found that the most recognizable car brand logo in America is the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. The German automaker’s badge came in No. 12 on an overall list of companies — topped by Apple, McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, SWNS reported.

A recent study by LyricFind also discovered that Mercedes-Benz is the most name-checked car company in song lyrics, with nearly 5,000 mentions to date.

Mercedes-Benz was followed by Ford’s blue oval in fourteenth, with Toyota, Nissan and BMW rounding out the top five car companies that made the list.

    (Sjoerd van der Wal/Getty Images)

Honda’s stylized H was next, while Ferrari’s prancing horse finished a distant seventh, way down in 28th place between Levi’s and Marvel.

Of the 2,000 respondents surveyed, 85 percent called themselves brand loyal and three-fourths said they’re more likely to remember one if they receive free merchandise from it.

So you might want to start printing those T-shirts and hats if you want to move up the list.
