General Motors and Honda to co-develop electric vehicles

What electric vehicles does General Motors make?

General Motors is setting big goals for themselves this decade as they hope to make an impact on the electric vehicle industry. Here are the confirmed EV models that the automaker expects to have on sale in the U.S. in the near future.

General Motors will work with Honda to design and develop two electric vehicles using GM’s new EV platform, the automakers announced Thursday.

Details on what type of vehicles they are building were not revealed, but Honda will design the bodies and interiors and expects to start selling them in North America by 2024.

Honda is already an investor in GM’s Cruise autonomous car division, and they have previously worked together on battery technology. Honda recently discontinued sales of the electric version of its Clarity model, which was the only all-electric car it sold in the U.S.

GM will be using the platform for several of its own vehicles, including the upcoming Cadillac Lyriq SUV. All will be powered by a new battery GM will produce in-house under the Ultium brand name.

Despite the recent work stoppages caused by the coronavirus crisis, GM said its electric vehicle projects remain mostly on schedule, with a Hummer EV pickup set to enter production in late 2021, followed by the Lyriq.

How much does the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid cost? Not much

2020 Honda Talon 1000X test drive

Honda is racing into the sport side-by-side segment with the Talon 1000X. Fox News Autos editor Gary Gastelu hits the dirt to see how it handles the rough stuff.

The first Honda CR-V Hybrid is hitting showrooms with a bargain-basement price, relatively speaking.

    (Honda)

The compact all-wheel-drive utility vehicle starts at $28,870, which comes in just under the best-selling $29,220 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid and $30,960 all-wheel-drive hybrid Ford Escape.

    (Honda)

The CR-V Hybrid powertrain comprises a 2.0-liter four-cylinder and an electric motor that is rated at 212 hp and 238 lb-ft torque and delivers an EPA fuel economy rating of 38 mpg combined, which compares to 40 mpg for the Toyota and Ford.

    (Honda)

Along with all-wheel-drive, the CR-V Hybrid comes standard with the Honda Sensing electronic driver aid package that includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

The conventional CR-V was the fifth-best-selling vehicle in the U.S. in 2019, behind the Rav4 and full-size pickups from Chevy, Ram and Ford.

Base prices for the full CR-V Hybrid lineup of trim levels is as follows:

    LX – $28,87

    EX – $31,380

This car brand logo is the most recognizable in America, survey says

New Mercedes-Benz G550 looks very old

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G550 looks just like the 1970’s model it replaces, but looks can be deceiving. Fox News Autos editor Gary Gastelu says the high-tech SUV is bigger and better than the original G.

Spoiler alert: Ford beats Ferrari, and not just in the Oscar-nominated film.

    But Benz beats them both.

A survey conducted by the marketing products company Promotique by Vistaprint found that the most recognizable car brand logo in America is the Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. The German automaker’s badge came in No. 12 on an overall list of companies — topped by Apple, McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, SWNS reported.

A recent study by LyricFind also discovered that Mercedes-Benz is the most name-checked car company in song lyrics, with nearly 5,000 mentions to date.

Mercedes-Benz was followed by Ford’s blue oval in fourteenth, with Toyota, Nissan and BMW rounding out the top five car companies that made the list.

    (Sjoerd van der Wal/Getty Images)

Honda’s stylized H was next, while Ferrari’s prancing horse finished a distant seventh, way down in 28th place between Levi’s and Marvel.

Of the 2,000 respondents surveyed, 85 percent called themselves brand loyal and three-fourths said they’re more likely to remember one if they receive free merchandise from it.

So you might want to start printing those T-shirts and hats if you want to move up the list.

Toyota and Honda recalling over 6 million cars for airbag issues

Toyota and Honda are recalling more than 6 million vehicles because of separate safety concerns affecting airbags.

Toyota’s recall covers 3.4 million vehicles worldwide, including 2.9 million in the US, that may have an electronic defect that could prevent airbags from deploying in a crash.

The 2011 Toyota Matrix is one of the affected models.

The problem could also prevent the vehicles’ seatbelt pretensioners from working correctly, Toyota said Tuesday. The recall affects Corolla, Matrix, Avalon and Avalon Hybrid cars from model years 2011 to 2019, according to Toyota.

Honda announced a separate recall Tuesday of 2.7 million cars with potentially faulty inflators that could cause airbags to rupture during a crash. The recall of 2.4 million cars in the US and 300,000 in Canada affects Honda and Acura vehicles from the model years 1996 through 2003.

The inflators were made by Japanese manufacturer Takata but are different from those that led to the world’s biggest-ever auto safety recalls involving 42 million US vehicles.

Honda said it knows of three cases of newly recalled inflators rupturing — one that occurred during a 2012 crash in Texas and two others that happened during “scrapping activity” in Japan.

“Honda believes that the risk of improper airbag deployment in its vehicles remains very low at this time, but we cannot absolutely guarantee the performance of any recalled part,” Honda said.

Both Honda and Toyota said they will notify affected owners by mail and fix the problems for free.
