The Cadillac Lyriq is the brand’s first electric vehicle, one of many coming from GM

The Cadillac Lyriq is the brand’s first electric vehicle.

    (Cadillac)

Cadillac will unveil its first fully-electric vehicle in April, GM announced at the automaker’s EV Day event at its design center in Warren, Mich., on Wednesday.

Cadillac released a conceptual rendering of the Lyriq last year.
    (Cadillac)

The Lyriq will be a crossover utility vehicle built on a new flexible electric vehicle platform that will be used across GM’s brands and has been previewed in a teaser image of its profile.

GM President Mark Reuss has described the skateboard-style chassis as an “ice cube tray” that can accommodate a variety of battery sizes from 50 kWh to 200 kWh in two layers to meet the requirements of each specific model. The front-, rear-, or all-wheel-drive chassis will also provide the underpinnings for the recently revealed Cruise Origin autonomous shuttle.

GM’s modular platform can accommodate a wide array of vehicle types.
    (GM)

The batteries will use a new type of proprietary lithium-ion chemistry being developed by GM and LG Chem under the Ultium brand name that reduces the amount of cobalt required by 70 percent, which makes them cheaper to produce than current designs.

A truck-style off-road version is also in the works.
    (GM)

GM is going with a “pouch-style” rectangular cell — rather than the cylindrical type used by Tesla — that can be installed either upright or flat, depending on packaging needs. The cells will also feature in the upcoming Hummer EV pickup, and GM said it is opening to licensing it to other automakers. GM will produce them at a new factory that’s currently under construction in Lordstown, Ohio.

Along with the Cadillac and Hummer, GM also confirmed that an updated version of the Chevrolet Bolt EV later this year followed by a Bolt EUV electric utility vehicle in 2021, which will feature the hands-free Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system.

Cadillac’s hands-free Super Cruise system has a spotless driving record, GM says

    Cadillac’s semi-autonomous sedan

The 2020 Cadillac CT5 is an all-new sedan that’s set to get better with age, says chief engineer Brandon Vivian, with upgrades to its Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver aid.

The Cadillac Escalade is one of the most-popular chauffer-driven vehicles in the U.S., and the latest one has a part-time chauffer built-in. The 2021 edition of the full-size SUV will feature the latest version of Cadillac’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving aid when it goes on sale this summer.

    (Cadillac)

The system uses cameras, radar, GPS and a database of 200,000 miles of highways that have been 3D-mapped using Lidar that allow it to steer a vehicle within a lane, avoid running into cars ahead of it and change lanes in traffic while the driver keeps their feet off the pedals and hands off the wheel.

    (Cadillac)

Unlike competing systems such as Tesla’s Autopilot, Super Cruise uses a facial-recognition system to make sure the driver is paying attention to the road. If not, it will alert them to get their attention before it begins to disengage, by turning on the hazard lights and slowly bringing the vehicle to a stop. Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and other brands require a driver to keep touching the wheel to indicate that they are alert.

    (Cadillac)

Cadillac President Steve Carlisle told Fox News Autos at the new Escalade unveiling in Hollywood that the automaker isn’t aware of any accidents that have occurred while it was in use. His statement was reiterated by GM President Mark Reuss during the company’s Capital Markets Day event at the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday, when he said that Super Cruse has seen 5.2 million miles of “incident-free” operation in the real world since it first became available on the CT6 sedan in 2017.

That mileage figure is far less than the approximately 3 billion miles Tesla says its owners have driven using Autopilot, which is being investigated by NHTSA after several high-profile fatal accidents. A number of videos have also surfaced over the past few years that appear to show drivers who have fallen asleep with their hands on the steering wheel as their cars continue driving.

According to a report from Tesla in April 2019, the rate of accidents while Autopilot in use was approximately one per every 2.87 million miles driven, compared to one per 1.58 million miles without it. So far, there haven’t been any complaints filed with NHTSA regarding Super Cruise and it hasn’t been implicated in any accidents that have been reported on by the media. However, there was one odd incident the system may have been involved in.

Last May, video surfaced showing a man named Leonard Olsen standing out of the sunroof of a CT6 with his arms spread out as it drove along the I-4 highway near Lakeland, Fla. When police later tracked him down and arrested him on charges of reckless driving, he told them “the car drives itself and has a gigantic computer in it,” WTSP reported.

“I thought it would be a nice way to praise God for a minute, and I thought it would be nice at the time and that’s what I did,” Olsen said.

It was never officially determined if Super Cruise was in use or why it didn’t deactivate if it was, although it is also not known exactly how long Olsen was standing up.

Following the Escalade, Carlisle said Super Cruise will be available on every all-new model the brand introduces, including the upcoming CT5 and CT4 sedans.

2021 Cadillac Escalade debuts with OLED screens, semi-autonomous tech and a diesel engine

The all-new 2021 Cadillac Escalade debuted in Hollywood on Tuesday night with stylish new duds and a dazzling array of tech worthy of the model’s celebrity status at the top of GM’s lineup.

    (Cadillac)

The full-size SUV was unveiled with a short promotional film directed by Oscar-winner Spike Lee as part of the lead-up to The Academy Awards, for which Cadillac is the official automotive sponsor.

The Escalade has been the bestselling full-size luxury SUV in the U.S. for the past two decades and the updates are aimed at retaining the roughly 2-to-1 lead it holds over its chief rival, the Lincoln Navigator, which has become increasingly popular since its redesign for the 2018 model year.

    (Cadillac)

The new Escalade adopts Cadillac’s latest family face, with the slim horizontal headlights, vertical light bars and shield-shaped grille that first appeared on the XT6 crossover, but it shares its bones with the recently introduced Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon. The body on frame truck platform is equipped with a car-like fully-independent suspension that can be enhanced with computer-controlled dampers and air springs to further improve the ride and handling.

Despite GM’s promise of an all-electric future, there isn’t a battery-powered drivetrain offering, but there is something different. Along with the Escalade’s familiar 420 hp 6.2-liter V8, Cadillac has for the first time added a diesel engine to the options list. The 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6-cylinder is currently available in GM’s full-size pickups where it delivers best in class fuel economy, but final figures for the Escalade are not yet available. Both engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

    (Cadillac)

The Escalade will be just the second model to feature the semi-autonomous Super Cruise driver aid that is Cadillac’s answer to Tesla’s Autopilot. The system uses cameras, radar, hyper-accurate GPS and a database of 3D maps of over 200,000 miles of roads to provide hands-free driving on limited-access highways as it steers the car between the lines and controls the speed to avoids obstacles ahead of it. Facial recognition ensures the driver is paying attention to the road ahead, or else it deactivates the system, which can also perform lane changes in traffic with a tap of the turn signal.

    (Cadillac)

The Escalade’s signature feature, however, is a 38-inch curved display comprised of three OLED screens that house the instruments and touchscreen infotainment system. A feed from a night-vision camera with pedestrian detection and an augmented reality navigation system that overlays directional animations onto live camera views can be projected on the center screen.

The cabin, which is roomier than the current Escalade’s, also offers a 36-speaker audio system from Harman’s high-end division AKG with dual-zone volume control for the front seat passengers, plus twin 12.6-inch touchscreen entertainment systems for the second-row.

Pricing for the 2021 Escalade will be announced closer to when it goes on sale this summer, but the outgoing 2020 model starts at just over $75,000.

    Cadillac Escalade: 5 fast facts

The Cadillac Escalade has gone from being a badge-engineered version of the Chevrolet Tahoe to the pride of GM’s fleet. Here are a few key moments from its history.

    (Cadillac)

1 – The Escalade debuted a year after the Lincoln Navigator in 1999, began outselling it in 2001 and has had the best of its rival on the charts ever since.

    (Cadillac)

2 – The 2002-2013 Escalade EXT was Cadillac’s first pickup truck, and featured a short cargo bed that could be extended into the passenger cabin.

    (David McNew/Getty Images)

3 – The Escalade hasn’t been offered with an all-electric powertrain, but was available as a hybrid with a 6.0-liter V8 from 2009 to 2013 that got 20 mpg combined, compared to the conventional 6.2-liter V8’s 15 mpg rating.

2021 Cadillac Escalade getting hands-free Super Cruise driving aid

    Cadillac’s semi-autonomous sedan

The 2020 Cadillac CT5 is an all-new sedan that’s set to get better with age, says chief engineer Brandon Vivian, with upgrades to its Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver aid.

The 2021 Cadillac Escalade will be equipped with the latest version of the automaker’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver aid, the automaker has confirmed. It will be the brand’s first SUV with the system, which will also be available on the upcoming CT4 and CT5 sedans.

Super Cruise launched in 2017 in the CT6 sedan with the ability to drive the car within a lane on certain divided highways, allowing a driver to let go of the steering wheel and take their feet off the pedals. It uses a facial recognition camera that can tell if a driver is looking ahead with their eyes open, and won’t work if they’re not.

With the new models, Cadillac is adding an automated lane-changing capability activated by engaging the turn signal that can merge the vehicles into approaching traffic and plans to offer further updates in the future.

LEAKED PHOTOS OF 2021 CADILLAC ESCALADE HIT THE INTERNET

To date, about 10,000 CT6 sedans have been sold with Super Cruise and Cadillac says they’ve been driven 5.2 million times with the feature engaged. That figure compares to the more than one billion miles Tesla owners have covered using the Autopilot system in their cars, which provides more functionality than Super Cruise, but currently requires the driver to keep a hand on the wheel to indicate that they are attentive.

The all-new Escalade will be revealed at an event in Los Angeles on February 4 accompanied by a short promotional film directed by Spike Lee. Along with Super Cruise, the SUV has an industry-first 38-inch-wide OLED dashboard display.

Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac wins Daytona 24-hour race

Wayne Taylor raised two sons to become world-class sports car drivers. In the biggest event in North America, the recent empty nester proved he’s still the man in charge.

Wayne Taylor Racing won the prestigious Rolex 24 at Daytona on Sunday for the second consecutive year, the third time in four seasons and fourth time overall, and moved within two Rolex victories of Chip Ganassi’s record six wins.

It was the first victory for the team owner without a Taylor behind the wheel and he grabbed his head in celebration, slammed the pit stand, then hugged his all-star driver lineup.

This Wayne Taylor Racing team came without either of the Taylor sons. Jordan, the youngest, left the team this year to become a factory driver for Corvette Racing while Ricky is in his third season driving an Acura for Team Penske.

Taylor had accomplished his dream by placing both of his boys in high-profile, properly funded rides. But that life goal forced him to rebuild his sports car program without either son.

“I feel really happy because most people have been saying this team only exists because of my kids,” Wayne Taylor said. “When we started it, we always felt we’d have them drive for us at some point and try to teach them. When they got offered these other drives with Penske and Chevrolet, I was the happiest guy out there, finally they can go away.

“Everyone was saying ‘Will the team close down?’ Well, why should we close down? We’ve got a great group of people who work with us. We need to take care of them. I used to be able to say we won because of my kids, well, now that’s not true because we won without them. So the team is really awesome.”

Drivers Ryan Briscoe, Renger van der Zande, Scott Dixon and Kamui Kobayashi celebrate after winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

    (AP)

For the first outing, he assembled a lineup full of Rolex winners. Taylor called in five-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon and Kamui Kobayashi, one of the top sports car racers in the world. They joined Ryan Briscoe and Renger van der Zande, the full-time drivers of the No. 10 Cadillac DPi.

“This team, the drivers, when they come into this little team of ours, they are so focused and so passionate about winning and fortunately we are really bad losers,” Taylor said.

The driver credentials in the Cadillac gave Taylor a “star car” of sorts, but his team was overshadowed in the buildup by other teams, the Rolex debut of reigning NASCAR champion Kyle Busch, and the bittersweet final breakup of the family-oriented team.

Underestimating Wayne Taylor Racing was a massive mistake.

His team was so good in the twice-round-the-clock race that it shrugged off every tiny miscue — even when Briscoe blew through a red light on pit lane to earn a penalty that dropped him from the lead to a lap down — in a total beat-down of the prototype class.

“The Cadillac was just flat out from the start,” Dixon said. “We had lots of problems along the way, but I think that’s what made it so good. To come back and go a lap down and get the lap back — just had the raw speed. You can’t go wrong with the reliability and the performance and how we ran. It was unbelievable.”

Kobayashi, once a Formula 1 driver and member of Taylor’s winning team last year, was spectacular and the Japanese driver closed the final three hours to beat No. 77 Mazda Team Joest by more than a minute. The Cadillac was the only car on the lead lap for long stretches of the race.

Jordan Taylor, who finished fourth in the GT Le Mans class, couldn’t even remember the last time a Wayne Taylor Racing car won a race without a Taylor in the cockpit. He first guessed 2004, then amended his answer to 2008.

“I think since 2013 we went only one year without finishing on the podium,” said Jordan Taylor, referring to his former team as if he still drives for them.

“It’s an incredible team, an incredible victory, a lot of good guys on the team who are like family.”

Ricky Taylor stoically watched from the Penske pits.

“I couldn’t show too much excitement in our pits,” he said. “But very happy for my dad and the whole team. They really deserved it, they were dominant.”

The race had a record 833 laps, breaking the mark of 808 set two seasons ago. Taylor now has two wins as a driver — one when he drove for Wayne Taylor Racing — and four as a team owner.

DragonSpeed USA won the Le Mans Prototype 2 class. BMW Team RLL won the GT Le Mans class for the second consecutive year. Paul Miller Racing won the GT Daytona class, the slowest but stacked division that had 18 entries including the Aim Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3 with Busch.

Busch was really good in his first endurance race, but the team had its share of struggles with attrition and was never a contender.

Still, Busch said he’d be interested in a return to sports car racing, especially if Toyota or Lexus moves up to the prototype class, because he’d like a shot at racing for the overall win.

“Hopefully there is some things that Toyota’s got up their sleeve as to what kind of class they want to participate in and what kind of cars they want to run over here in the next few years,” Busch said. “I would certainly be, you know, all hands on deck to put my hands up to get ready to go for a DP overall win.”

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

New regulations reached for 2022 earlier this weekend would make IMSA’s prototype class eligible for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, another race Busch could potentially elbow into in the future.

Toyota Racing Development President David Wilson said the manufacturer has no current plans to move up in class with Lexus or enter prototypes with Toyota.

“We are very happy racing in the GTD Series and we intend to continue as we still have races and championships to win,” Wilson said. “We would not rule it out in the future, but at the present time we have no plans to participate.”

Busch was highly praised by his teammates, as well as team co-owner Jimmy Vasser, who said not one person in the organization had an issue with the temperamental driver.

“He impressed. I am not sure why we should be impressed. He’s a NASCAR champion. He’s won more NASCAR races in the modern day than anybody, but it takes a lot of confidence and guts to jump into a discipline that he’d never really done before and he did it with ease,” Vasser said. “He was really, really impressive. He was running times of top sports car pros.

“He’s a very serious guy, but he was a joy to have on the team and really added a lot for our people to see how a true professional works. Not that we don’t have them here, but he’s a great champion and a true champion. He came here to learn and he didn’t know and he had an open mind. Some people might come in and think they know everything. But he certainly didn’t and showed he knows quite a bit.”

2021 Cadillac Escalade debuting with Spike Lee short film

Spike Lee’s next film is a car commercial.

    (Cadillac)

The Oscar-winning filmmaker has directed a short film to help unveil the all-new 2021 Cadillac Escalade on February 4 during the lead-up to the Academy Awards show, which is sponsored by the automaker. Details on the theme of the piece and any actors appearing in it have not been revealed, but Cadillac said it will feature Lee’s signature “double dolly shot” visual technique.

The all-new Escalade does have a cinematic hook in the form of a 38-inch OLED dashboard display.

No word yet if it will be able to play Lee’s, or anyone else’s films. This isn’t the first time Lee has teamed up with an automaker. He previously produced a short for Jaguar in 2000.

Lee won the Best Screenplay Oscar in 2019 for his film “BlacKkKlansman.”
