McCarthy says ‘I know who recorded me’ privately talking about Trump

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy says he knows who recorded him criticizing former President Donald Trump in the immediate aftermath of the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol.

McCarthy’s statement comes months after The New York Times published a recording of McCarthy taken on Jan. 10, 2021, in which he stated that Trump should resign. McCarthy now says he knows who was behind the leaked audio, and he plans to reveal the culprit sometime in the future, according to Politico.

“I know who recorded me,” he said Thursday. “I’ll bring it forward. I have it.”

McCarthy initially denied the recording existed, leading the NYT to publish it earlier this year.

“It comes as no surprise that the corporate media is obsessed with doing everything it can to further a liberal agenda,” McCarthy wrote on Twitter hours before the NYT made the recording public.

“The past year and a half have proven that our country was better off when President Trump was in the White House, and rather than address the real issues facing Americans, the corporate media is more concerned with profiting from manufactured political intrigue from politically-motivated sources,” he continued.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer reportedly called McCarthy a “suck up” to Trump during a private dinner with fellow Democrats on Monday. Schumer also stated his belief that Republicans would take the House come November, however, saying that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was “in trouble.”

Kansas braces for nation’s first statewide vote on abortion after fall of Roe v. Wade

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Kansas will hold the nation’s first statewide vote on abortion rights since the fall of Roe v. Wade on Tuesday.

The state is holding a referendum on an amendment to the state constitution that would deny the right to an abortion. While more than a dozen states have abortion “trigger laws” that were set to go into effect immediately upon the end of Roe, the Kansas amendment will be the first time Americans are directly polled on the issue since the fall of Roe.

The Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe in Dobbs v. Jackson in late June, once again allowing states to regulate abortion democratically.

The Kansas “Value Them Both” amendment, “would affirm there is no Kansas constitutional right to abortion or to require the government funding of abortion, and would reserve to the people of Kansas, through their elected state legislators, the right to pass laws to regulate abortion, including, but not limited to, in circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest, or when necessary to save the life of the mother.”

WHAT DOES OVERTURNING ROE V. WADE MEAN? SUPREME COURT DECISION’S IMPLICATIONS

The amendment would not restrict abortion access in itself, but it would allow state lawmakers to pass legislation regulating access.

The referendum comes roughly three years after the state Supreme court ruled that the Kansas constitution protects the right to an abortion in 2019.

Kansas is a heavily Republican state, and the legislature would be likely to pass restrictions on abortion soon after the referendum if the amendment succeeds. It was the GOP supermajority in the state legislature that ensured the referendum would happen following the 2019 ruling and the fall of Roe.

Pennsylvania declares recount in Republican Senate primary as Dr. Oz’ lead shrinks

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania will head to a recount as Dr. Mehmet Oz’s lead shrank to less than a thousand votes Wednesday.

Acting Secretary of State Leigh Chapman announced the recount Wednesday, and the process will take several days before a winner is officially declared. Pennsylvania law requires an election to go to a recount when candidates are within half a percentage point of each other.

Votes were originally cast in the primary on May 17.

“We are proud our campaign received nearly 418,000 votes, won 37 of 67 counties, and contributed to a historic turnout with a razor-thin difference between myself and Mehmet Oz,” CEO Dave McCormick, who trails Oz by 902 votes, said in a statement.

PENNSYLVANIA GOP SENATE PRIMARY RACE REMAINS TOO CLOSE TO CALL

“This narrow difference triggers an automatic recount, and we look forward to a swift resolution so our party can unite to defeat socialist John Fetterman in the fall,” he added.

McCormick had previously attempted a lawsuit to ensure that mail-in ballot votes lacking a handwritten date would be counted. The Republican National Convention and the Pennsylvania GOP intervened in an attempt to block the lawsuit, however.

“The RNC is intervening in this lawsuit alongside the Pennsylvania GOP because election laws are meant to be followed, and changing the rules when ballots are already being counted harms the integrity of our elections,” RNC chief counsel Matt Raymer said in a statement.

“Either of Pennsylvania’s leading Republican Senate candidates would represent the Keystone State better than a Democrat, but Pennsylvania law is clear that undated absentee ballots may not be counted,” Raymer added. “This is another example of the RNC’s ironclad commitment to ensuring that the highest standards of transparency and security are upheld throughout the election process.”

McCormick’s lawsuit pertained to a May 20 federal court ruling that allows for undated mail-in ballots to be counted. The Republican argues that handwritten dates are irrelevant because county boards stamp such ballots with a date on receipt.

“Both the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit have held that mail-in ballots should not be disqualified simply because the voters failed to hand write a date on the exterior mailing envelope of their ballots,” Chuck Cooper, chief legal counsel for McCormick’s campaign, told Fox News Digital Tuesday. “Because all ballots are time stamped by the County Boards of Elections on receipt, a voter’s handwritten date is meaningless.  All timely ballots of qualified Republican voters should be counted.”

The Oz campaign has yet to release a statement regarding the recount.

Pope Francis declares 10 new saints, including one proposed as ‘Patron Saint of Journalists’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Pope Francis declared 10 new saints during the first canonization ceremony at the Vatican in more than two years on Sunday.

Among the 10 new saints is Titus Brandsma, a Dutch priest and journalist who was killed in a Nazi concentration camp in 1942. The others include an 18th Century Indian convert known as Devashayam, as well as four priests and four nuns who founded religious orders in Europe, according to the Associated Press.

A group of Dutch and German journalists proposed that Brandsma, who worked to combat Nazi propaganda in newspapers, be named the co-patron saint of journalists. Francis has yet to respond to the proposal, however.

The current patron saint of journalists is St. Francis de Sales.

Devashayam, also known as Lazarus, evangelized to the lower classes in India before being arrested and executed in 1752, according to the AP.

Francis walked to greet cardinals and bishops for roughly 15 minutes following the ceremony, indicating significant improvement in recent knee pain that has forced him to use a wheelchair.

Lloyd Austin meets with Chinese counterpart, ending 15-month silent streak

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with his Chinese counterpart for the first time since entering office more than 15 months ago, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Austin held a call with Gen. Wei Fngheon, China’s minister of national defense Wednesday morning. Chinese military officials had previously rebuffed all of Austin’s request to meet or talk with Wei, an indicator of fractious relations with the country.

The DOD released a brief statement detailing the call, saying the conversation was a follow-up to President Joe Biden’s most recent call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

“Secretary Austin and General Wei discussed U.S.-PRC defense relations, regional security issues, and Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine,” the DOD statement read.

RUSSIA-UKRAINE: LIVE UPDATES

A statement released by Beijing was more specific in parts, however, saying that Wei had told Austin directly that Taiwan is a part of China. The DOD did not immediately respond to a request to confirm that Wei had made the statement.

While China claiming Taiwan as a territory is not a change in position for the country, it does highlight the tension in relations between the U.S. and China as it relates to Taiwan.

The U.S. has long abided by the One China Policy, which formally acknowledges that mainland China is the official government of China, and acknowledges – but does not endorse – China’s claim to authority over Taiwan.

CHINA ACCUSES US, TAIWAN OFFICIALS OF ‘PLAYING WITH FIRE’ WITH  UKRAINE COMPARISONS

Tensions over the issue flared last week when a bipartisan group of Congressmen traveled to Taiwan, representing one of the most high-level U.S. delegations to visit the country.

The group included Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Richard Burr of North Carolina, and Rob Portman of Ohio, Republican Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, and Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez.

“China firmly opposes any form of official interaction between the U.S. and China’s Taiwan region,” the spokesperson for the Chinese government tweeted the day the group arrived.

Fears that China may move to invade Taiwan have risen in recent years, thanks to China’s increasing aggression in the region, including frequent air force flights near Taiwan’s airspace.

HHS Secretary Becerra refuses to admit partial-birth abortions are illegal in House testimony

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra refused to admit that partial-birth abortions are illegal in a heated exchange with Republican Indiana Rep. Jim Banks on Wednesday.

Becerra appeared before the House Committee on Education and Labor to discuss the policy priorities of his department. Banks pressed Becerra on whether his department would aggressively enforce the federal ban on partial-birth abortions, but the secretary refused to acknowledge the ban.

“Do you concede that partial-birth abortion, as defined in 18 U.S. code, section 1531, is illegal and punishable by fine, imprisonment or both?” Banks asked.

“Congressman, I’ll try to respond to this as best I can,” Becerra began. “And that’s to say that having been a former attorney general, I know how important it is to not only follow the law, but enforce it. As secretary of HHS I will not only comply with the law, but enforce it, and when it comes to issues that sometimes we hold different and sometimes very deeply held beliefs I will respect where people’s opinion is, but my job is to make sure I’m enforcing the law.”

HHS SEC. BECERRA PUSHES ‘HEALTH EQUITY’ AS CENTRAL MISSION FOR DEPARTMENT

“Do you concede that partial birth abortion is illegal per the law?” Banks pressed.

“Under the Supreme Court decision in Roe vs. Wade, women have reproductive rights that they are entitled to enforce and that they are entitled to have the government respect. I will do everything I can to make sure a woman’s rights and reproductive care are defended,” Becerra responded.

“So I take that as no, you don’t concede that that is the law,” Banks stated.

“I gave you the answer,” Becerra said.

Banks then repeatedly pressed Becerra to answer the “simple question,” repeatedly cutting the secretary off as he began vague answers.

Becerra has a history of denying that the U.S. ban on partial birth abortions exists. He claimed during a 2021 hearing before the same committee that “there is no law that deals specifically with the term “partial-birth abortion.”

This is false, as Congress passed the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act in 2003 and President George W. Bush signed it into law. Becerra himself was a sitting member of Congress at the time representing California. He voted against the bill.
