Student found with weapon at JPS school entrance
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson Public Schools confirmed Thursday that a weapon was confiscated from a student on school grounds.
The incident happened as the student was entering Callaway High School on Thursday morning.
According to JPS, the district’s EVOLV security screening system alerted staff to a concealed handgun in the scholar’s waistband.
The situation was immediately addressed, according to JPS.
The weapon was safely secured without incident.
JPS stated, “There were no injuries, and there was no ongoing threat to the school. The safety and well-being of our scholars will always be our top priority.”
JPS also stated that the District maintains a zero-tolerance policy for weapons on campus. Any student found in possession of a weapon is subject to disciplinary action and possible criminal charges, in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
Families and staff are encouraged to continue having conversations with students about the seriousness of school safety and the importance of never bringing weapons onto campus.
