Over 60 lbs of narcotics seized by Rankin County Sheriff’s Department during traffic stop
RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) – The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department seized over 60 pounds of narcotics Thursday after stopping a tractor-trailer for failing to stay in one lane of traffic.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 7:00 p.m. a deputy was traveling on eastbound I-20 near the 68-mile marker when he saw a tractor-trailer hauling multiple cars that was failing to maintain a single lane of travel.
After stopping the vehicle and speaking with the driver, the deputy conducted a consensual search of the vehicles being hauled.
During the search, deputies noticed anomalies in a silver BMW passenger car.
The tractor-trailer was taken to a nearby sheriff’s department facility, where further examination of the anomalies revealed that the vehicle had been loaded with approximately 42.4 pounds of meth and 20 pounds of fentanyl.
After the initial investigation, deputies believed that the driver nor the trucking company was aware of the illegal cargo concealed inside the vehicle.
The driver was released and has not been charged with any crime at this time; however, this is an ongoing investigation.
