NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The New Orleans Police Department on Friday (Jan. 10) released body camera footage capturing the deadly confrontation that ended the Bourbon Street terror attack.

The footage provides a detailed look at the moments leading up to Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s death as he exchanged gunfire with officers.

The video shows three officers surrounding the rented F-150 that Jabbar used to barrel through crowds of New Year’s Day revelers, killing 14 and injuring dozens more.

A fourth officer, Luis Robles, wearing the body camera that recorded the footage, runs toward the open door of the truck after it crashed into a lift vehicle in the 300 block of Bourbon Street.

As the officer approaches, a bright muzzle flash erupts from inside the cab of the truck; Jabbar firing a gun from beneath a deployed airbag.

Officers quickly fall back as gunfire continues. NOPD officers returned fire, fatally shooting Jabbar and ending the rampage.

Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says that two officers injured during the exchange, Joseph Rodrigue and Jacobie Jordan, have been released from the hospital and are recovering.

TERROR ATTACK

City officials and the public have praised the bravery of the officers who confronted Jabbar. The New Orleans City Council recently awarded commendations to 175 officers for their actions during the attack.

Multiple investigations into how Jabbar carried out the attack continue as city and state leaders examine security measures in the French Quarter, especially ahead of major events like Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl.
