NCAA finalizing new transfer portal rules in College Football

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – On Tuesday, the NCAA Division I Administrative Committee approved two changes to the transfer portal in College Football, eliminating the spring transfer window and shortening the amount of time student athletes can transfer after a coaching change.

The new transfer window starting in 2026 will run from January 2-16, opening one day after College Football Playoff Quarterfinals game conclude. Players on the two teams competing in the National Championship game on January 19 will get an additional five-day period from January 20-24 to enter the portal.

The second change will shorten the amount of time players can transfer after a coaching change from a 30-day window to 15 days.

Currently, players are allowed to enter the transfer portal during a 30-day period after their coach leaves or is fired. Now, players will have a 15-day window to transfer five days after a new coach is hired.

Both changes are expected to be finalized after the committee concludes its meeting on Wednesday.
