JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – An attorney who allegedly smuggled contraband into the Hinds County Detention Center has been given a $75,000 bond.
On Friday, Hinds County Judge Johnnie McDaniel set bond for attorney Daniel Dale, who allegedly smuggled cell phones, cell phone chargers, drugs, and other items into the jail during what was believed to be meetings with clients.
He was arrested on Thursday by the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, days after a video showed him allegedly giving a cell phone and a brown envelope full of other contraband to a client.
The 49-year-old is charged with two counts of conspiracy and three counts of introducing contraband into the facility.
According to affidavits filed in County Court, when Dale was arrested, he was found with two cell phones, a digital scale, four vacuum-sealed packs of cigarettes, four vacuum-sealed packs of what is believed to be marijuana, two cellphone charger blocks, two cell phone chargers, and multiple cigar wraps. He had brought in the items in a silver briefcase.
Affidavits show he conspired with two detainees in the scheme: William Antonio Harness Jr., and Marcell Cornelius Martin.
Harness was picked up by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on June 30. He is charged with murder, drive-by shooting, simple and aggravated assault, and being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon. He is likely facing additional charges related to the contraband scheme, Sheriff Tyree Jones said.
Martin was arrested by the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department in 2021. He is being charged with two counts of murder and one count of being a convicted felon in possession of a concealed weapon. It’s unclear if he will face additional charges.
