JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson State University’s lethal trio in the backfield led the way on Saturday, eclipsing 350 rushing yards to secure the Tigers’ eighth win of the season and defeating Bethune-Cookman 28-13.

Ahmad Miller, Donerio Davenport, and Travis Terrell Jr. all rushed for over 100 rushing yards against the Wildcats, finishing with 360 rushing yards as a team.

Miller led the team with 118 yards on 22 carries.

Davenport finished with 106 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Terrell Jr. finished with 103 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Jared Lockhart also tallied 33 yards on the ground.

On the second play from scrimmage, Lockhart found Jameel Gardner Jr. deep down the field for an 83-yard touchdown reception to take the early lead.

Bethune-Cookman was able to respond as quickly as possible when Javon Travis returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to tie it at seven apiece.

The defenses locked down after that, with both teams punting on their next two possessions.

Jackson State wouldn’t find points again until the eight minute mark of the second quarter when Terrell Jr. took a carry 25 yards to the house to regain the lead.

The Tigers tried to add to their lead just before half, but a Lockhart interception in the red zone would cut that drive short.

The Wildcats were able to take advantage with just 30 seconds left in the first half thanks to a 37-yard Juan Dominguez field goal.

Bethune-Cookman came out of the half and put together an eight-play, 45-yard drive to set up another Dominguez field goal to make it a 14-13 game.

After a Wildcat’s fumble, the Tigers were able to score off of the turnover after a five-play, 44-yard drive capped off by a six-yard Davenport rushing score.

The Tigers defense then stepped up big time in the fourth quarter, shutting out the Wildcats’ offense and forcing two interceptions.

B.J. Washington was able to return the second pick to the house 82 yards to extend Jackson State’s lead to 28-13.

Lockhart finished 12-of-21 for 160 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Jackson State remains in the top spot of the SWAC East Division with a 6-1 conference record.

The Tigers now get ready for the Soul Bowl against Alcorn State University, who comes into the matchup on a four-game winning streak.
