Hattiesburg woman, wife of late Camp Shelby veteran, turns 100
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – A Pine Belt family celebrated a century of memories, milestones, and good times Sunday as its matriarch. Arnice Sasaki, turned 100 years old.
Family said Sasaki always has been a jokester and full of life.
“I don’t want to give them advice,” Sasaki said. ”It may be wrong.”
She was married to Herbert Sasaki, a Japanese-American World War II veteran. Herbert Sasaki was responsible for erecting monuments at Camp Shelby where his military unit was formed.
He also served on Camp Shelby’s museum board for more than a decade. He died in 2005.
Arnice Sasaki was asked how she managed to make it to a 100th birthday.
“Well, if there’s trouble, we’re going to find it,” she said.
Longevity apparently runs in Arnice Sasaki’s family.
Her sister is 96 years old; her brother, 85 years old. Both were on hand at Sunday’s party.
