JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The man accused of stabbing someone, carjacking someone else, and leading police on a high-speed chase is still serving a sentence for violent felonies that took place nearly two decades earlier, according to a 3 On Your Side investigation.

Records from the Mississippi Department of Corrections and the Hinds County Circuit Court show 37-year-old Jonathan Versell had already served 16 years behind bars after pleading guilty to armed robbery and aggravated assault in 2007.

Versell had been sentenced to three years probation as well, which was scheduled to end in December 2026, according to release data from MDOC.

On Thursday night, Versell led Capitol Police on a high-speed chase through Jackson and Ridgeland before being captured without incident, capping off a night of alleged violent activity.

The evening began when Versell began acting hostile toward a security guard outside Jackson’s Union Station, Capitol Police spokesperson Bailey Martin said.

When the guard drew his weapon, Versell ran off, allegedly stabbed someone, and stole someone else’s sport-utility vehicle.

Martin said Capitol Police spotted the vehicle on Woodrow Wilson Avenue minutes later and attempted to stop the man, but he drove away and led officers to a chase that ended at Rice Road in Ridgeland.

Law enforcement records associated with Versell’s Thursday night charges indicate the man may be homeless.

Versell faces armed carjacking, aggravated assault, and felony fleeing charges.

Jail records show he’s currently being housed in the Raymond Detention Center.
