JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The Capitol Complex Improvement District Court is slated to hold an opening ceremony next week in Jackson.

Public Information Officer Beverly Pettigrew Kraft says the ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 24, at 201 South Jefferson Street.

According to Kraft, Supreme Court Chief Justice Mike Randolph will introduce judicial appointees to the CCID Court during the ceremony.

CCID Court will open for business at 8 a.m. on Monday, January 27.

WLBT 3 On Your Side reported in January of 2024 about the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upholding District Judge Henry Wingate’s ruling, denying a motion seeking a preliminary injunction blocking the court from taking effect.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Mississippi State Conference of the NAACP, and others filed suit to block the CCID Court last year.

The groups argued that the court would violate the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights of residents in the majority-Black capital city.

However, the Fifth Circuit ruled that the legislation creating the CCID Court does not take away “Jackson’s existing powers.”

The CCID Court was created as part of H.B. 1020, which was passed by lawmakers in 2023.
