Ex-Dallas Maverick Harrison Barnes to pay for funeral of Texas police shooting victim Atatiana Jefferson, report says

Sacramento Kings forward Harrison Barnes, formerly of the Dallas Mavericks, is paying for the funeral of Atatiana Jefferson, who was killed in her apartment on Saturday when a Fort Worth, Texas, police officer fired a gunshot through a back window, according to a report.

Jefferson was playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew when she was killed by an officer responding to a call about an open front door. Aaron Dean, 34, did not identify himself as an officer before opening fire, police video showed. He resigned Monday and later was charged with murder.

Barnes and his wife had a history of giving back to their North Texas community, such as providing Thanksgiving meals for those in need and donating to the Boys and Girls Club, Fox 4 reported.

Jefferson lived in the Hillside Morningside neighborhood, a residential part of South-Central Fort Worth, about 30 miles west of Dallas, where some 40 percent of people live below the poverty line.

The Associated Press reported that Jefferson’s death shattered the trust police have been trying to build with communities of color in the Texas city of 900,000, which has long had complaints of racially unequal policing and excessive force.

In a study published in March, the National League of Cities found that black Fort Worth residents were disproportionately assessed fines and fees, and that blacks and Hispanics were more likely than whites to be arrested.

Barnes was once a key player on the Golden State Warriors but found himself in a bit of flux. He signed a four-year, $94 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks in the summer of 2016 and was thought to be a key player for the organization. But he was traded to the Kings during the 2018-2019 season after more than two years in Dallas.

NBA legend Michael Jordan opens medical clinic for underprivileged patients in Charlotte

NBA legend Michael Jordan has decided to spend part of his fortune on helping the most underprivileged members of his community.

On Thursday, an emotional Jordan opened the first of two Charlotte medical clinics funded by him and his family. The clinic, located in a lower-income section of the city, will provide vital access to primary and preventive care to residents, including those who are uninsured or underinsured.

Novant Health, which will operate the facility in West Charlotte, tweeted Thursday that Jordan had donated $7 million to help make the Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinic a reality.

“The money is not the issue to me. It’s the commitment to be able to make a difference and make an impact to a community that in the future will make an impact to the city of Charlotte,” said Jordan, who owns the hometown Hornets. ” … This is a very emotional thing for me to be able to give back to a community that has supported me over the years.”

Jordan also vowed to do more, saying “this is just the start of a battle of being able to touch as many people as we can.”

“There are a lot of people living here who are low income, they don’t have health insurance,” local resident Sharelle Blake, one of the clinic’s first patients, told Fox 46. “There are children here who need the immunizations to go to school and they don’t have insurance and they don’t have a way.”

“When you look at the growth in this area, in the next three to five years, we need triple the primary care that is needed today,” Norvant Health Executive Vice President and Chief Consumer Officer Jesse Cureton told the station.

Jordan has amassed a net worth of nearly $2 billion through his earnings on the court and various business dealings. He is perhaps best known for his relationship with Nike, which operates Jordan Brand as a subsidiary. He also has long-term relationships with Pepsi-owned Gatorade and Hanes.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says China asked him to fire Daryl Morey over pro-Hong Kong tweet

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has revealed that Chinese officials asked him to fire Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey over his pro-Hong Kong tweet, which caused an international controversy.

“We were being asked to fire him by the Chinese government. … We said there’s no chance that’s happening. There’s no chance we’ll even discipline him,” Silver said at the first TIME 100 Health Summit on Thursday about Beijing’s reaction to Morey tweeting the slogan: “Fight for freedom. Stand with Hong Kong” in support of pro-democracy protesters there.

Morey later deleted the tweet from his personal account, but not before spurring a rebuke from the NBA and inciting a backlash in China. Authorities in the communist country canceled publicity events and news conferences last week, while state TV refused to broadcast two exhibition games between the Brooklyn Nets and the Los Angeles Lakers.

Lakers superstar LeBron James, considered one of the more outspoken athletes on social justice issues in a league that prides itself on being one of the most progressive in sports, was skewered this week after he criticized Morey’s tweet as “either misinformed or not really educated on the situation.” Some Hong Kong protesters burned and stomped on James jerseys during a rally. They threw basketballs at a photo of James and chanted support for Morey.

On Thursday, Silver said the NBA has lost a lot of money due to the flashpoint with China.

“…The losses have already been substantial. Our games are not back on the air in China as we speak, and we’ll see what happens next.”

“I don’t know where we go from here,” Silver added. “The financial consequences have been and may continue to be fairly dramatic.”

Canadian outlets slammed for story on former NHL enforcer now working at Tim Hortons

Former NHL enforcer Donald Brashear saw an outpouring of support from fans on social media this week after several Canadian news outlets seemingly shamed him following a story that the hockey pro had taken up employment at a local Tim Hortons.

Le Journal de Québec first reported Tuesday that Brashear, 47, was spotted this month working at one of the Canadian fast-food restaurants owned by former hockey player and friend Pierre Sévigny.

NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL ON ANTONIO BROWN INVESTIGATION, RETURN TO FOOTBALL: I’LL ‘LET YOU KNOW’

Sévigny told the outlet that he preferred not to comment and only offered that Brashear had recently been hired.

“He’s an employee, that’s all. We have just started, he is here to help me,” Sevigny, who played three seasons with the Montreal Canadians, told the outlet.

A picture of Brashear smiling while standing behind a drive-through window was published with the story.

CTV followed up the story, which focused heavily on Brashear’s $15 million career and subsequent struggles with the law.

Hockey fans took to social media to slam the outlets for what some called “job shaming.”

Canada’s National Post was also heavily criticized after writing the same story but incorrectly using a picture of Georges Laraque, another black NHL player.

Laraque saw the story and – trying to make light of the obvious blunder – tweeted it himself with this caption: “Can someone tell the National Post that Brashear has no hair and I got dreadlocks! Laugh out Loud.”

The Post quickly issued a statement putting the blame on a “misattribution” in “the photo’s caption from our wire service.”

Brashear played 15 seasons in the NHL and was known for his rough and tough playing style. He played for five different organizations and is currently ranked 15th all-time in NHL penalty minutes.

Patrick Mahomes’ ankle injury leads Chiefs fans to turn to higher power in hopes he heals quicker

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ injured ankle has many fans concerned about how healthy the reigning NFL MVP is and has prompted them to turn to a higher power for help.

A Kansas church plans to hold prayer services Sunday to ask God for help in healing Mahomes’ ankle, according to FOX4KC. Mahomes’ injury may have affected his abilities to lead the Chiefs to a win against the Indianapolis Colts and the Houston Texans in back-to-back weeks.

“With the last two games, we kind of thought that they may need some type of help,” Dave Burton, the facilities director at Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village told the station Wednesday. “We knew that his ankle was injured so we decided to possibly have a healing service to help him heal that ankle quicker.”

The church said it is open for anyone to attend the prayer services, which begin at 9 a.m. local time and go on until 11 a.m. The church will also offer prayers for anyone else’s favorite team who is in need of some salvation, according to FOX4KC.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Antonio Brown investigation, return to football: I’ll ‘let you know’

Antonio Brown: A Timeline of Drama

Antonio Brown, a four-time NFL All-Pro wide receiver whose career has spanned contracts with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots, is no stranger to controversy. On Sept. 10, 2019, Brown was accused in a civil suit sexually assaulting and raping his former trainer on three separate occasions in 2017 and 2018.

Embattled NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown has reportedly been eyeing a return to football, but an investigation by the league into allegations of sexual misconduct could delay that as Commissioner Roger Goodell offered this as a timeline Wednesday: I’ll “let you know.”

Speaking at the NFL Fall league meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Goodell was asked to comment about the league’s ongoing investigation into allegations that Brown sexually assaulted his former trainer and sent intimidating text messages to another woman who had also accused him of sexual misconduct.

“We’re still working at that,” Goodell said, according to Yahoo! Sports. “I will probably be getting an update when I get back to New York, but our folks have been working diligently on that, going through materials.”

He continued: “There’s a lot of material to go through. When we reach a conclusion, we’ll obviously let you know.”

Brown was released from the Oakland Raiders just before the start of the 2019 season after a very public dispute with the organization. He was then picked up by the New England Patriots for 11 days before he was again released in the wake of the allegations. He played one game for the Pats this season.

ANTONIO BROWN HAS YET TO MEET WITH NFL INVESTIGATORS ABOUT SEXUAL ASSAULT, RAPE ALLEGATIONS: REPORT

The now-free agent was first accused in a civil lawsuit filed in Florida of sexually assaulting and raping a former trainer on three separate occasions between 2017 and 2018 when he was a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He was then accused by another woman in a Sports Illustrated report of sexually assaulting her and then again of sending her “intimidating texts” after she came forward with her story.

Although Brown vowed to never return to the NFL in Sept., recent reports cited unnamed sources who confirmed that he hopes the league’s investigation will quickly come to a close so he can play again.

This may have been confirmed in a cryptic tweet by Brown on Tuesday where he said “Free AB.”

Brown is technically a free agent and can be signed by any team. But on Sept. 20 the league issued a statement saying he could be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list if picked up during the investigation, which would mean he would have to be paid despite not being eligible to play. A player on the exempt list is not allowed to practice or attend games, but he is allowed to be present at facilities for meetings, to work out, and to receive treatment.

Ex-Saints wide receiver at center of infamous blown call joins XFL

A former NFL wide receiver who was at the center of the controversial pass interference call during the NFC Championship game last season between the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams has found a new home.

Tommylee Lewis will be playing in the XFL come 2020 after the rebooted league’s Dallas Renegades drafted him in the second round Tuesday. Lewis will be joining a team manned by former college football national champion head coach Bob Stoops.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NATIONAL CHAMPION LEADS REBOOTED XFL’S QUARTERBACK CLASS

The Renegades will have Landry Jones throwing the ball in their first season come February.

Lewis was the wide receiver who was infamously pushed by Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman during the NFC title game in January. The referees failed to throw a flag on a clear pass interference penalty, which would have given the Saints extra yardage, a new set of downs and a chance to put the game away.

XFL REVEALS TEAM NAMES FOR EACH OF ITS EIGHT FRANCHISES

The no-call was one of the biggest moments in the playoffs last season and led to a rule change allowing coaches to challenge whether a pass interference penalty should have been called on a particular play.

Lewis signed with the Detroit Lions in the offseason, and while addressing the play at training camp, he told reporters he was “over” it.

“I done answered so many questions about that play,” Lewis said, according to the Detroit Free Press. “So I’m over it. I’m over that.”

Super Bowl champion lineman sued over domestic violence allegations

A Super Bowl champion offensive lineman was accused of domestic violence in a civil lawsuit filed in California this week by his ex-girlfriend and mother of his son.

Trent Brown, who is in his first season with the Oakland Raiders, was accused of slapping Diorra Marzette-Sanders across the mouth leaving her “bruised, bloodied and battered,” according to Pro Football Talk. Brown is also accused of threatening to shoot Marzette-Sanders in the “f—–g head.”

Marzette-Sanders also alleged that Brown “grabbed her face and covered her mouth while choking her out until she couldn’t breathe” in March. And while vacationing in Hawaii in April, Brown allegedly “grabbed [her] arm, took her into a room, locked the door, slapped her across the face and punched her in the ribs.”

In June, Brown allegedly slapped the woman in the face, which led to police being called to the scene and a police report being filed.

Brown denied the allegations in a tweet Wednesday.

“I am aware that my ex-girlfriend has filed a civil suit against me,” he wrote. “I deny the claims. They are false. I believe in the court system where I will clear my name. I will not be making any further comment at this time.”

Alabama student made bomb threat during LSU-Florida game to save friend from losing bet: police

A University of Alabama student was arrested Sunday for allegedly calling in a bomb threat at Tiger Stadium during a big conference matchup between LSU and Florida.

Connor Bruce Croll, 19, was arrested in Tuscaloosa, Ala., after allegedly making the threat, according to WBRZ-TV. Croll admitted to authorities he made the call because “his friend was on the verge of losing a large bet,” the station reported, citing a police affidavit.
