First-time NASCAR Cup Series winner Christopher Bell is ready to get dirty at Bristol

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell won his first NASCAR Cup Series race this past weekend on the Daytona road course, which the dirt and short oval track specialist said was a “surprising” result.

“I knew that I was going to have a good opportunity to win a Cup race this year driving at Joe Gibbs Racing, Bell told Fox News Autos. “For it to come at the second race of the season on a road course was definitely something that caught me off guard.”

Bell’s only previous experience on this type of track was a test in a Trans Am racing car at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, where the Cup Series will race later this year during a season that will feature seven road and infield course races, the most ever.

But there’s another change coming that’s more in Bell’s wheelhouse, the dirt race at Bristol Motor Speedway in March. The half-mile track has been covered in red clay for the first time in Cup Series history.

“It’s going to be really fun to see the Cup cars on dirt and I’m just excited to go out there and put on a show,” Bell said.

And he knows how to do that. In 2019, the Oklahoma native became the first three-peat winner of the Chili Bowl Nationals in Tulsa, the country’s premier dirt track event.

Returning NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson won it the past two years, but Bell won’t quite say they’re the favorites to win.

“I’d like to say we’re going to have an upper hand, that’s for sure, but the Cup Series is full of a ton of talented race car drivers that are going to figure it out pretty quick.”

Louisiana dog burned in kennel fire becomes first canine to undergo new skin treatment

A dog that was severely burned in a fire will become the first canine to undergo a new “breakthrough” treatment to heal her.

Sadie, a 2-year-old terrier mix, was injured when a heat lamp and hay in her kennel to keep her warm in the winter weather caught on fire, WWL in New Orleans reported.

Sadie was burned on 70% of her body, according to the report. A veterinary surgeon, Dr. Dena Lodato, stepped in to help, and Sadie is being treated with hyperbaric oxygen and pain medication.

THESE ARE THE CUTEST DOG BREEDS BASED ON ‘GOLDEN RATIO’ BEAUTY MEASURING THEORY

Now, burn doctors from University Medical Center New Orleans are also pitching in to help Sadie with a new treatment: AVITA Medical RECELL, according to the report.

Under the RECELL treatment, doctors use a sample of the patient’s skin to create a spray that helps regenerate the outer layer of skin, according to AVITA. It can be prepared and used in a half-hour.

“I just really want people to know that we are here for them,” Dr. Nicole Kopari, a surgeon at UMCNO, told WWL. “We’re here for the community, and our care for these patients extends much beyond just the hospital, even to their pets.”

AVITA donated the RECELL kit for Sadie’s treatment, according to the report. It has never been used to treat a dog before.

Jeff Dorson, executive director of the Humane Society of Louisiana, told WWL that “this is a breakthrough moment” for pets and the people who care about them.

After Sadie recovers, she will be going to a rescue group in New Jersey, according to the report.

Test drive: The 2021 Genesis GV80 is ready for its unexpected fame

Test drive: 2021 Genesis GV80

The 2021 Genesis GV80 is the brand’s first SUV and packed with luxury and tech, according to Fox News Autos Editor Gary Gastelu.

It’s a strange thing to get into a vehicle that one of the most famous people in the world just wrecked. Not the actual damaged vehicle, but one just like it.

I was at the hospital for a routine visit when news broke that Tiger Woods was in another hospital on the other side of the country with serious injuries after rolling off a California road in a Genesis GV80, the same model that was sitting in the garage waiting to take me home.

Based on preliminary evidence, the accident wasn’t due to any fault of the GV80’s, but chalked up to Woods driving carelessly on a tricky road as he was rushing to work. Nevertheless, it put the vehicle in a somewhat different light as I retrieved it from the garage and headed off to continue my evaluation of what had all of a sudden become a celebrity.

(Genesis)

The GV80 is a midsize SUV with a starting price of $49,995 that’s designed to compete with pricier vehicles like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE. It’s the young, Hyundai-owned luxury brand’s first utility vehicle and off to a strong start as its best-seller so far this year.

Woods was driving a loaner from Genesis. The automaker had hired him to host a golf tournament it had sponsored the week prior to his accident, which gives you an idea of the sort of high net worth customers it aspires to lure from their more established premium brands. The GV80 might have the goods to do it.

The GV80 has distinctive, head-turning looks courtesy of an oversized shield-shaped grille and spilt lighting design are signatures of the Genesis lineup. Its interior is a blend of simplicity and opulence that looks like a greatest hits of luxury cars and can stand up to anything near its price point.

(Genesis)

Practically every surface from floor to ceiling is trimmed in either premium upholstery, real metal, open-pore wood or a soft composite material, and a colorful ambient light strip wraps around the cabin into the back seating area.

The second row seats are heated, reclining and can moved fore and aft, but aren’t particularly roomy. Fold them down, however, and the GV80 has more cargo space than the X5 or GLE. Top GV80 models powered by a 375 hp turbocharged V6 are also available with a small third row of seats, but my test vehicle was one of the entry level models with a 300 hp turbocharged four-cylinder that it’s not currently offered in.

The GV80 is available with either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, both with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The power is more than enough to get you in trouble and make the V6 seem unnecessary. It’s smooth for a four-cylinder and a noise reduction system both helps keep it quiet and offers three levels of volume to fill the cabin with. Fuel economy is disappointing, however, with the highway rating at just 25 mpg.

The handling is excellent for a vehicle this size, especially in my Prestige trim level tester that was equipped with a computer controlled suspension that literally reads the road ahead of it. The system uses a camera to scan the surface for bumps and then uses that information to adjust the shocks for impact. The suspension is on the firm side overall, and the short-sidewall rubber on the 22-inch wheels isn’t well-suited to poorly-maintained city streets, but you’d really have to be driving this like you stole it to get beyond its limits.

(Genesis)

There’s also a Highway Driving Assistant for cruising on the freeway that combines adaptive cruise control with a very effective, self-steering lane-centering system. Technically, you’re supposed to have your hands on the wheel at all times for it to operate, but there were a few stretches where I removed them for over a minute before it scolded me.

Additional driver aids include blind spot cameras that display in the instrument cluster and a 360-degree bird’s-eye-view for parking. That’s something you don’t have to do, at all.

MORE TEST DRIVES FROM FOX NEWS AUTOS

The GV80 features a remote parking assistant that lets you pull the vehicle into and out of a space from outside of it by holding down a button on the key fob. It’s mostly useful when you return to your car to find someone parked too close to it to open the door, but will also amaze and delight your kids. At least once or twice before they get over it.

I’m not about to speculate on what happened to Woods, but the one thing about the GV80 that distracted my driving was the infotainment system. It has an impressive 14-inch touchscreen display on top of the dash and a little out of reach, but also a unique controller on the center console.

(Fox News Autos)

It’s comprised of a flush metal rotating ring with a button in the middle that also works as a pinch and swipe pad. I never really got used to operating it and navigating the on-screen menus can be tricky. Automakers are constantly trying to reinvent this interface and few have hit the mark. Sometimes less is more, even in a luxury car. That said, I fully endorse the climate-controlled massaging front seats.

HYUNDAI, KIA AND GENESIS OWN THE 2021 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK LIST

As far as safety is concerned, the GV80’s NHTSA and IIHS crash test ratings haven’t been announced yet, but it does come with 10 airbags including one that pops up between the front passengers to keep them from banging into each other during a rollover event like Woods suffered. He was alone, but there’s a good chance the side curtain and knee airbags helped lessen the severity of his injuries in a wreck that first responders on the scene thought he was lucky to survive.

The GV80 was a finalist for the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year award against the Land Rover Defender and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Ford won, because it’s electric and the future and all that, but that’s not a bad showing for Genesis’ first effort and it appears to be well-deserved.

‘Zoom fatigue’ is real, research suggests, and it’s leading to burnout

Why colleges cannot efficiently switch to Zoom learning

Ryan Carson is the CEO and Founder of Treehouse, an online coding school where users can learn how to code an app and build a website. In an interview with Fox News, Carson broke down why attempting to convert an in-person model of teaching to Zoom is ineffective for students and why paying 40,000 dollars is ‘completely bonkers’.

Being “on” all the time is exhausting.

Turns out “Zoom fatigue,” which has been described as mental exhaustion for anyone working, learning or teaching from home via videoconferencing tools, is real, new scientific research suggests. The findings come about a year after the coronavirus pandemic changed the way Americans live and work in the new virtual world.

New research suggests “Zoom fatigue” is real. (iStock)

Research from Stanford published in the journal “Technology, Mind and Behavior,” found that being “on” all the time — usually from behind a computer screen — has triggered more stress and is making it harder for people to be intimate in real life.

Professor Jeremy Bailenson, a founding director of the Standford Virtual Human Interaction Lab, analyzed the psychological consequences of spending hours in front of video conferencing platforms like Zoom and found several reasons why it causes tiredness and fatigue among humans.

WHY DOES ZOOM EXHAUST YOU? SCIENCE HAS AN ANSWER

For starters, excessive amounts of eye contact can become straining and intense, Bailenson notes, explaining that feeling the pressure of being watched or listened to can be anxiety-inducing. To combat this, Bailenson suggests formatting your Zoom screen to a shrunken window rather than keeping it in the square format, so the audience seems less intense.

“Social anxiety of public speaking is one of the biggest phobias that exists in our population,” said Bailenson, according to Stanford News. “When you’re standing up there and everybody’s staring at you, that’s a stressful experience.”

Bailenson also says lack of mobility also takes a toll on cognition and recommends people move around when possible during virtual meetings, whether it’s just pacing around or turning the video off to stretch your legs during longer meetings.

Bailenson’s paper also notes that video calls make people feel like they’re under a microscope and therefore must think about simple movements and gestures like yawning or stretching.

Still, finding the proper Zoom-life balance is crucial with more people operating with remote capabilities. The platform surged from 10 million users in 2020 to more than 300 million.

Man reunited with cat after it vanished 15 years ago: ‘It was very emotional’

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A cat that went astray about 15 years ago has been reunited, older and maybe wiser, with its owner.

Brandy, a brown tabby, was reunited Monday afternoon with Charles, who adopted her as a 2-month-old kitten in 2005.

“It’s amazing. I think it’s unbelievable,” he said Thursday.

“I saw her, I picked her up and she started to purr and it was very emotional,” Charles said. “It was nice to have her in my arms again.″

“I did break down and cry because I thought about all of the years I lost from her,” he said.

MISSING CAT FOUND 3 YEARS AFTER CALIFORNIA MUDSLIDE

Brandy was found Sunday in Palmdale, about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from where Charles lives in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.

The computer technician, who didn’t want his last name used, said Brandy strayed only a few months after he adopted her.

“She went outside in the afternoon to our backyard,” he said. But when it got dark and he went to bring her inside, she wasn’t there.

MAN REUNITED WITH HIS DOG AFTER THEY WERE SEPARATED DURING BALTIMORE EXPLOSION

Charles drove around looking for her, checked animal shelters and put up signs without any luck.

“I was very sad,” he said. “I wanted her back because when I adopted her I made a moral obligation to take care of her for her life.”

He feared she had been killed by a car or a coyote.

“But I was hoping someone would take her off the streets to take care of her, and I guess that’s what happened,” he said.

CHICAGO COMMUNITY RALLIES TO FIND LOST DOG

Charles went on with his life. He moved to another place in the Valley and adopted two younger cats.

Then on Sunday, he received a call from the Los Angeles County animal shelter in Palmdale and another from the company that made a microchip implanted in Brandy when she was adopted.

Charles had changed his address and home phone. But luckily, his cellphone number was the same as that listed on the microchip.

“I was skeptical. I thought, must be a mistake,” Charles said. “Maybe there’s a 1-in-a-million chance it’s Brandy. But after 15 years, it’s highly unlikely.″

Still, “I said, yeah, the microchip wouldn’t lie.”

On Monday afternoon, he went to Palmdale to look at Brandy. She was older and very skinny, he said.

Brandy needed a little help: She was malnourished and weighed only 6 pounds.

“She basically weighed as much as when she was a kitten,” Charles said.

Her nails had grown long enough to wound her paws.

Charles suspects that somebody found her as a kitten and kept her all those years without bothering to check whether she had a microchip. He believes she must have become separated or run off several months ago.

But she was the same calm, gentle, sweet cat he remembered, Charles said.

Charles decided he couldn’t keep Brandy in his one-bedroom apartment with two younger cats. But Brandy is staying with his sister nearby, and he intends to visit often.

“She doesn’t have a lot of energy. But she seems very content,” Charles said. “She purrs a lot.

“She seems to be happy to have a home again.”

Queen Elizabeth bought grandson Archie a waffle maker for Christmas, Prince Harry says

Queen Elizabeth issues statement on coronavirus outbreak

Amid the rapid outbreak of COVID-19, the British monarch released a statement addressing the current and upcoming challenges presented by the pandemic. Here is how the Queen is showing her determination to support the people of the United Kingdom during these uncertain times.

Archie’s gonna flip when he finally tries Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles.

During a segment on Thursday night’s “Late Late Show With James Corden,” Prince Harry — the Duke of Sussex himself — revealed to Corden that Queen Elizabeth gave his son Archie a waffle maker for Christmas after wife Meghan Markle gave her the idea.

“My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas, and Meg said a waffle maker,” he told Corden, adding that Archie, 1, loves waffles so  much, he “literally” asks for them as soon as he wakes up in the morning.

“So at breakfast now, Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix in the waffle maker… He loves it. And now, I have waffles for breakfast, bit of yogurt, bit of jam on top. I dunno if that’s the right thing to do. Bit of berries maybe? Little bit of honey, maybe some syrup.”

PRINCE HARRY, MEGHAN MARKLE CHOOSE UNIQUE FLAVOR FOR WEDDING CAKE

Corden, in response, claimed he couldn’t even get his “head around” the notion of Queen Elizabeth ordering a waffle maker to be sent to Santa Barbara, where the duke and duchess currently reside.

“I don’t know how to even comment on that,” laughed Harry.

The queen’s shopping habits were just one of the comments that took Corden aback during the segment, which centered on Corden giving Prince Harry a proper tour around Southern California — in a double-decker bus.

At one point, the two make an impromptu stop at the house that was used as the exterior on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” with Corden joking that Harry and Meghan should try to purchase the property for themselves. Harry, however, merely asked the homeowner if he could step inside and use the bathroom.

“I didn’t expect a toilet break from the prince,” Corden tells the camera, before calling Meghan on Harry’s phone and informing him of what her husband had done.

“He’s already used the bathroom,” Corden told Meghan, who is currently pregnant with the royal couple’s second child. “That’s how at-home he feels.”

Prince Harry revealed that he and Meghan began their relationship “upside-down,” in that they dated in private at first, before revealing themselves to the public as a couple.

Before ending the segment with a visit to a military-style obstacle course, Harry also surprised Corden with his comments about his early dates with Meghan, revealing that they experienced the beginning of their relationship “upside-down,” in that they dated in private at first, before revealing themselves to the public as a couple.

“There were no distractions. And that was great, it was an amazing thing,” Harry said of the early dates.

Wisconsin wolf hunters exceed state’s quota by almost double during abbreviated hunt, DNR confirms

The results are in — and Wisconsin wolf hunters overshot their target by more than 80%.

Wisconsin’s recent wolf hunt, the state’s first in seven years, ended early on Wednesday after the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) determined that 69% of the state’s 119-wolf quota had been harvested in just two days. But hunters and trappers out in the field were allowed a grace period of 24-hours, effectively extending the hunt through the following afternoon.

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, the Wisconsin DNR confirmed that quotas had been exceeded in all six hunting zones, for a total of 216 wolves taken — a number far exceeding the 119 limit originally set by the DNR.

WISCONSIN WOLF HUNT ENDS EARLY AFTER HUNTERS KILL 69% OF QUOTA IN TWO DAYS

“It’s easy at this point in the game to say, yeah, maybe we should have closed it a little bit sooner,” said DNR Wildlife Management Director Eric Lobner at a Thursday news conference. “There were so many unknowns about how the season was going to play out… How far we went over goal was not necessarily our objective.”

As of 3 p.m. on Thursday, the Wisconsin DNR confirmed that quotas had been exceeded in all six hunting zones, for a total of 216 wolves taken — a number far exceeding the 119 limit originally set by the DNR.

Officials say fresh snowfall on the first few days of the hunt aided hunters in tracking the wolves, as did hunting dogs — which accompanied approximately 90% of the successful hunters. The special hunt was a desirable one for outdoor enthusiasts in the area, too. The DNR was reportedly flooded with over 27,151 applications, with only 2,380 permits available.

Wolf hunters in Wisconsin had been waiting seven years for this hunt, too. Gray wolves were listed as an endangered species prior to Jan. 4, when they were removed from the list by the Trump administration and population management rights were returned to the state. Wisconsin mandates that the DNR open a wolf hunt from early November to late February when gray wolves are no longer listed as endangered or threatened.

DNR officials had planned to wait until November to begin the hunt, but Republican lawmakers feared President Biden would relist the wolves as endangered before it could take place, the Associated Press reported. A hunting advocacy group called Hunter Nation later won a court order to open up Wisconsin’s wolf hunt in February.

FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK FOR MORE FOX LIFESTYLE NEWS

Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s hunting advocates and conservationists were at odds over the hunt, with the former arguing that the wolf population was decimating farmers’ livestock, and the latter worrying that the gray wolf’s relatively small numbers (officials estimate there are roughly 1000 in the state) were already too small.

It’s possible that Thursday’s tally doesn’t encompass the total kill count of this year’s hunt, either. Wisconsin had allocated an additional 81 wolves to the Ojibwe Tribes within their Ceded Territory, in response to a declaration made by the tribes ahead of this year’s hunt. However, it’s possible the tribes had made the declaration without having any actual intent on killing the wolves, which the Ojibwe have historically held as sacred, the AP reported.

A representative for the Wisconsin DNR was not immediately available to comment on plans for future hunts, although it’s said the DNR is still moving forward with a wolf hunt in November if needed to control the population.

“The Wisconsin DNR has successfully managed gray wolves for decades and will continue to do so in accordance with the laws of our state and the best science available,” the department writes on its website.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Iconic New York steakhouse Peter Luger fills empty dining room with celebrity wax figures

It’s dining with the stars. Almost.

Audrey Hepburn, Jimmy Fallon and Jon Hamm are just a few famous figures you’ll see at legendary New York steakhouse Peter Luger while dining during the pandemic: The Brooklyn chophouse partnered with wax museum Madame Tussauds to give a host of Hollywood heavyweights a seat at its open tables.

The mannequins, which have a standing reservation at the restaurant through March 1, are the restaurant’s current answer to the empty seats in its dining rooms, which are restricted to 35% capacity amid the pandemic.

Peter Luger teamed up with Madame Tussauds wax museum to bring figures like Jon Hamm (above) to its dining room. (Madame Tussauds)

Indoor dining at Peter Luger only resumed on Feb. 14, but the more-than-century-old steakhouse soon began hoping to give guests more than just dinner, but a bit of a show, too.

PETER LUGER’S ZERO-STAR REVIEW WILL STILL LURE PEOPLE WILLING TO PAY

“We’re excited to welcome diners back indoors at 35 percent, and thought this would be a fun, safe way to fill some of the seats that need to remain empty as we continue to fight the pandemic,” Peter Luger vice president Daniel Turtel said.

Expect a greeting from “Mad Men” star Ham at the bar, and an approachable Fallon posed with coffee and dessert. Hepburn, meanwhile, can be seen in her iconic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” attire with a martini. “Al Roker,” too, can be seen guiding guests to the upstairs dining area.

To entice any diners who crave even more of the waxy celebs, Madame Tussauds is offering discount tickets to anyone from New York’s five boroughs and New Jersey, as well as Connecticut residents living in Fairfield and New Haven counties.

Peter Luger, meanwhile, is far from the only restaurant to fill its semi-empty dining areas with lifelike mannequins. Restaurateurs in Virginia, Belgium and even Lithuania have embraced the idea, although Peter Luger’s objectively has the most “famous” clientele of the establishments.

These are the ‘cutest’ dog breeds based on ‘golden ratio’ beauty measuring theory

Every dog owner wants to believe their pup is the cutest, but apparently that’s not the case if you’re a believer in the golden ratio.

The ancient Greek mathematical equation has long been used to rate the beauty of humans. However, analysts at the pet insurance comparison website moneybeach.co.uk have used the formula to rank the cuteness of 100 dog breeds.

THESE WERE 2020’S MOST POPULAR DOG NAMES

To come up with its determination of the top 20 dog breeds, analysts looked at face-on photos of each canine and calculated their level of attractiveness based on the distance of its eyes, ears, nostrils and tongue.

With those measurements, the analysts were able to come up with a percentage that showed how much or how little each dog adhered to the golden ratio.

Only 10 dog breeds received a percentage that was higher than 62.5%.

‘COVID bandit’ leaves $6,800 tip for Colorado restaurant staff

A generous diner in Denver left a $6,800 tip at a restaurant Saturday night.

The anonymous diner who goes by the moniker “COVID bandit” left the huge tip at Guard and Grace, a high-end steakhouse in Denver’s central business district, chef and owner Troy Guard wrote on Facebook.

The tip amounted to $200 for each of the restaurant’s 34 employees, according to Guard.

“Whoever this person is … thank you so much for your act of kindness and your sincere genuine caring thoughtfulness you just bestowed on our Guard and Grace staff,” he wrote.

“COVID sucks,” the deep-pocketed tipper wrote on the receipt, adding a smiley face and signing it as the “COVID bandit” at the bottom.

Ben Moon, a staff member at the restaurant who was working Saturday night, told KDVR in Denver that the man’s reservation was even made under the name COVID bandit.

The big tip comes as many restaurant workers have been struggling to get by as the coronavirus pandemic has kept diners home. Guard and Grace just reopened for dine-in service last month.
