Netflix, Ava DuVernay sued over ‘When They See Us’ portrayal of interrogation technique

Netflix and celebrated director Ava DuVernay have been sued over their portrayal of the Reid interrogation technique in the Emmy-winning miniseries “When They See Us,” according to a new report.

The four-episode series directed by DuVernay, 47, tells the story of the Central Park Five, a group of young black men who were falsely charged with the rape and assault of a jogger in 1989.

Per Variety, citing court documents, John E. Reid and Associates — it developed the interrogation technique showcased in the series — claims that “When They See Us” sheds a negative light on the procedure and implies that it involves coercion.

‘WHEN THEY SEE US’ DIRECTOR AVA DUVERNAY AND ‘EXONERATED FIVE’ TALK LINDA FAIRSTEIN BACKLASH DURING OPRAH SPECIAL

“Defendants intended to incite an audience reaction against Reid for what occurred in the Central Park jogger case and for the coercive interrogation tactics that continue to be used today,” the suit reads. “Defendants published the statements in ‘When They See Us’ in an effort to cause a condemnation of the Reid technique.”

The lawsuit refers to a specific instance in which it’s alleged that the Reid technique was poorly dramatized. Per Variety, a district attorney’s office employee confronts a detective in the case, saying: “You squeezed statements out of them after 42 hours of questioning and coercing, without food, bathroom breaks, withholding parental supervision. The Reid technique has been universally rejected.”

AVA DUVERNAY’S CENTRAL PARK FIVE MINISERIES CALLED AN ‘OUTRIGHT FABRICATION’ BY EX-PROSECUTOR LINDA FAIRSTEIN

The detective responds: “I don’t even know what the f—ing Reid technique is, OK? I know what I was taught. I know what I was asked to do and I did it.”

Reid and Associates also claims the program has caused harm to the company’s reputation, and the firm is seeking actual and punitive damages.

Finally, the plaintiff asks for Netflix to stop distributing the show in its current form, and for a disgorgement of Netflix’s profits from the show.

A rep for Netflix and a lawyer for DuVernay had no comment when reached by Fox News.

Scotty Bowers, ‘male madame’ to the stars, is dead at 96

Scotty Bowers, who wrote the best-selling 2012 memoir “Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars,” source material for the 2017 documentary “Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood” — has died. He was 96.

Bowers’ official Twitter account announced that he died on Sunday, citing an article from The Hollywood Reporter about his death as well as a quote from his documentary: “And remember. … It’s as good as it gets right now, baby,” the tweet read.

George Albert “Scotty” Bowers was born on July 1, 1923, in Ottawa, Ill., said THR. He was a Marine. He was also a gas station attendant.

KANE BROWN MOURNS DRUMMER, KENNY DIXON, WHO DIED IN A CAR ACCIDENT

After his time in the Marines, he moved to Hollywood. He claimed he met Academy Award-nominated actor Walter Pidgeon when he was working at a gas station, and that the meeting was pivotal. Indeed, Bowers claimed Pidgeon, who starred in “Mrs. Miniver” and “Madame Curie” in the early 1940s, asked him to swim in his pool, and he saw an opportunity he called “tricking.”

In the doc about his life, Bowers made some eye-popping claims, including that he had a threesome with Cary Grant and Randolph Scott. Bowers claimed the Hollywood icons lived together and were lovers.

Bowers also alleged he slept with Spencer Tracy, Vivien Leigh, Bette Davis and former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. He also claimed he has set up screen legends including Katharine Hepburn, Vincent Price and Rock Hudson with prostitutes.

RIC OCASEK’S WIDOW PAULINA PORIZKOVA SAYS CARS FRONTMAN’S DEATH ‘IS THE END OF MY WORLD AS I KNEW IT’

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the documentary referred to Bowers as “the premier male madame and sex worker of Hollywood’s postwar period.”

Last year, filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer, who shot the documentary, told The Daily Beast he’d spoken to other sex workers who worked with Bowers, and maintained that they’d verified Bowers’ claims.

“Are these stories substantiatable? My answer is yes, very much so,” Tyrnauer said.

On Monday, Tyrnauer told THR in a statement: “His story, which he waited to tell until he was in his late 80s — and for years refused to tell at all — forms an astonishing counternarrative of Hollywood and exposes the mores of the movie capital in a time when gay men and women were forced to be sexual outlaws and were publicly shunned and often persecuted, or at least forced to live double lives. Scotty was a central figure in the gay underground of Hollywood and served as a trusted protector of his friends’ and associates’ lives when they had no alternative but to live in the shadows.”

Per THR, Bowers is survived by his sister, Phyliss. His wife died last year.

‘Boy Meets World’ star Danielle Fishel tackles ‘mom guilt’ in emotional essay

Danielle Fishel had a guilt-ridden entry into motherhood.

The former “Boy Meets World” and “Girl Meets World” star recently penned an emotional essay for “Good Morning America” that covered her emotional toil during childbirth.

On June 24, Fishel gave birth to baby boy Adler, but not without issue. Adler was born with fluid in his lungs and thus remained in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for several weeks. Fishel’s husband, Jensen Karp, stood by their side for every step of the harrowing journey.

In the essay, Fishel noted that the concept of “mom guilt” was something that she’d not expected to experience.

‘BOY MEETS WORLD’ CAST REUNITES IN TENDER PHOTO AT EMERALD CITY COMIC CON

“I had heard of “mom guilt.” It was right up there with other types of guilt I heard about growing up, like ‘Catholic guilt’ or ‘Jewish guilt.’ I heard it was the awful feeling you’re never doing what you’re supposed to be doing, or not doing enough of what you should be doing, or not doing what you should be doing well enough,” Fishel candidly wrote.

“As a childless woman looking at all mothers I knew, I could only see how incredible they were. Their kids were happy, well-loved, fed and clothed. Some of them went back to work and others didn’t. Those decisions were not made selfishly, but based on privilege and what was best for their children and their families.”

‘BOY MEETS WORLD’ CAST TALKS 25TH ANNIVERSARY, THE SURPRISING IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Fishel’s initial birth plan included having a natural, drug-free childbirth — due to the health risks that introducing drugs would pose to both the mother and child. In an Instagram post, Fishel lamented the fact that her plan went out the window when she entered labor. “We feel helpless [sic] and powerless and useless and we wanted so badly to follow our birth plan,’ unsurprisingly none of which involved leaving our beautiful baby boy at the hospital for the first weeks of his life,” Fishel wrote on Instagram.

In her essay, Fishel noted that due to a decrease in her body’s amniotic fluid, delivery was induced with Pitocin.

“The guilty thoughts came flooding into my head,” Fishel continued. “Why did my water break so early? Was it because I was on my feet working 12-plus hour days at almost 36 weeks? Was it all the spicy food I had been craving? Did I do something that will hurt my baby?”

‘BOY MEETS WORLD’ STAR WILL FRIEDLE REVEALS HE STOPPED WORKING ON CAMERA DUE TO ANXIETY DISORDER

Upon returning to work at the end of September, Fishel experienced further guilt in terms of potentially abandoning Adler. “Does he remember me? Does he think I abandoned him? Am I hurting my son by desiring a career outside the home? Am I selfish?” Fishel wondered.

Fishel ultimately concluded with support for hard-working mothers out there. “When you see a mom feeding her baby formula, or breast milk in a bottle, or directly from her breast, or through a feeding tube (I have done all of these in Adler’s 15 weeks of life), or you see a mom dragging a screaming toddler through Target, or you see a mom calling home from work, or you get a text from a stay-at-home mom who is ready to pull her hair out, know that there is a story there.”

Pharrell says ‘Blurred Lines’ scandal changed his idea about sexism: ‘We live in a chauvinist culture’

Pharrell Williams is adjusting with the times and taking a step back to discuss one of his biggest pop hits.

The artist-producer and fashion mogul talked to GQ for its New Masculinity issue (released Monday) about his 2013 single, “Blurred Lines,” which he recorded with Robin Thicke and T.I. Back then, there was a controversy surrounding the record’s lyrics, which critics said degraded women, and the tune’s video, in which one of social media’s most openly sexual influencers, Emily Ratajkowski and other women frolicked in skimpy garb.

Ratajkowski called her appearannce in the music video “the bane of my existence.”

EMILY RATAJKOWSKI: I WAS ‘SO NAKED’ IN ‘BLURRED LINES’

Speaking to the men’s fashion magazine, Pharrell said the Billboard award-winning record has aged terribly. He noted that much of the theme surrounding the song wouldn’t be acceptable in today’s #MeToo climate.

“I was also born in a different era, where the rules of the matrix at that time allowed a lot of things that would never fly today,” said Pharrell, 46, of his career then and now. “Advertisements that objectify women. Song content. Some of my old songs, I would never write or sing today. I get embarrassed by some of that stuff. It just took a lot of time and growth to get to that place.”

‘BLURRED LINES’ RULING: PHARRELL WILLIAMS, ROBIN THICKE ORDERED TO PAY MARVIN GAYE’S FAMILY $5M

The 13-time Grammy Award-winner said it took the backlash from his infamous Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus-performed record to flip his perspective on what the song meant to people within the larger society, not just within his fan base.

“I didn’t get it at first. Because there were older white women who, when that song came on, they would behave in some of the most surprising ways ever. And I would be like, ‘wow.’ They would have me blushing,” the “Happy” singer said.

“So when there started to be an issue with it, lyrically, I was, like, ‘What are you talking about?’ There are women who really like the song and connect to the energy that just gets you up. And ‘I know you want it’ — women sing those kinds of lyrics all the time. So it’s like, ‘What’s rapey about that?’”

MEGHAN MARKLE TELLS PHARRELL WILLIAMS THAT THE PUBLIC DOESN’T MAKE THINGS ‘EASY’ FOR HER AND PRINCE HARRY

The Virginia Beach, Va., native said: “And then I realized that there are men who use that same language when taking advantage of a woman, and it doesn’t matter that that’s not my behavior. Or the way I think about things. It just matters how it affects women,”

“And I was like, ‘Got it. I get it.’ Cool. My mind opened up to what was actually being said in the song and how it could make someone feel. Even though it wasn’t the majority, it didn’t matter.”

He continued: “I cared what they were feeling, too. I realized that we live in a chauvinist culture in our country.

“Hadn’t realized that. Didn’t realize that some of my songs catered to that. So that blew my mind.”

Kate Middleton echoes Princess Diana’s style for Pakistan tour

Kate Middleton‘s latest look appeared to channel her husband’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Middleton, 37, and Prince William arrived in Pakistan on Monday for a five-day tour, with Middleton wearing a light blue dress with matching pants.

The outfit is seemingly inspired by the traditional shalwar kameez. Middleton’s dress also bears a close resemblance to a dress Diana wore during a trip to Pakistan in 1996 with a similar light blue color.

Michael Douglas on the college admissions scandal: ‘It’s just egregious’

Acting veteran Michael Douglas is sharing his thoughts on the college admissions scandal that rocked the nation earlier this year.

At a screening of the second season of his Netflix comedy, “The Kominsky Method,” Douglas, 75, spoke with Us Weekly about the scandal.

“It’s just egregious,” said Douglas, whose decades of film work also include star turns in “Wall Street,” “Fatal Attraction” “Romancing the Stone.” “The humiliation that these well-to-do families are suffering is that there’s no sympathy from their peer group.”

“Kind of just crazy. Just crazy,” said Douglas, himself the son of acting icon Kirk Douglas. “I think it was as much about the self-image for the parents as it was for the kids.”

Douglas also discussed his son, Dylan, who got into Brown University despite learning difficulties.

“Dylan had serious dyslexic issues,” Douglas said. “He had to go to special schools early on. He worked really hard, and the fact that he worked himself up to get into an Ivy League school, I’m just so proud of him.”

More than four dozen people have been charged in the nationwide scam, which is alleged to have placed students in top-tier schools like Yale, Georgetown, Stanford, the University of Southern California, UCLA and the University of Texas. A federal investigation into the matter – dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues” – has been ongoing for more than a year.

Among the parents exposed: Academy Award nominee Felicity Huffman, who pleaded guilty in May, admitting to paying $15,000 to boost her older daughter’s SAT scores in 2017; and “Full House” star Lori Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, both of whom pleaded not guilty in April.

Jana Kramer doesn’t trust husband Mike Caussin, worried he’ll still keep secrets amid topless photo scandal

Jana Kramer clarifies, apologizes for comments she made about not hiring ‘hot’ nannies

After making some comments about not hiring ‘hot’ nannies due to her husband’s sex addiction, country star Jana Kramer is trying to clarify parts of her remarks that she feels were taken out of context. Kramer noted that she and her podcast crew were discussing the idea of not bringing temptation into one’s household with an attractive and overly flirtatious nanny. However, she acknowledged that generalizing like that is wrong.

Jana Kramer is still feeling uneasy about placing her full trust in her husband Mike Caussin after the former NFL tight end received a topless picture from a mystery woman and proceeded to delete it without informing her.

The singer and actress said she made an attempt to contact the unknown woman and realized that it might not have actually been a real person but was, instead, a bot.

The “One Tree Hill” alum discussed the couple’s recent relationship struggles on Monday during their podcast “Whine Down.”

MIKE CAUSSIN CLARIFIED HIS COMMENT THAT JANA KRAMER CHEATING ON HIM WOULD BE A ‘DEAL BREAKER’

“Because of where I’m still at with it, it’s made my anxiety worse,” Kramer said about the incident when she was taken aback by her husband sharing on their show (via E! News). “It’s made me feel more confused and it’s just kind of, like, put more salt in the wound.”

Kramer said she understood Caussin’s willingness to be forthcoming in order to help others, but also noted that the couple choosing to reveal their turbulence was a “massive lesson learned” on not always sharing personal matters in real-time.

“There are people out there who think Mike actually cheated,” she said on the podcast. Caussin has vehemently promised his wife that it “won’t happen again,” a plea Kramer said she has “heard so many times.”

JANA KRAMER, MIKE CAUSSIN REVEAL MARRIAGE TROUBLES AFTER SHE FOUND A WOMAN HAD SENT HIM A TOPLESS PHOTO

“I think maybe now he sees how bad that wound is for me and the trauma of finding things – whether he did something or not,” said Kramer. “I’m to the point of, like, literally a nervous breakdown, where I just can’t physically handle it anymore.”

However, despite Caussin’s constant contrition to his wife of over four years, Kramer told the ex-professional athlete that she doesn’t believe he can remain on the straight-and-narrow.

Jana Kramer and husband Michael Caussin have come a long way since he cheated and was treated for sex addiction. Kramer said the couple still have a long way to go before she can fully trust him again.

“I told Michael the other day, I was just like, I don’t believe that there won’t be another time, and that sucks too, like, have to feel that,” she lamented. “How do I believe that when I’ve heard so many times, ‘I’ll never do it again. I’ll never do it again?’ So, it kind of puts me in this really awkward situation, and it makes me look weak and to have to be, like, continuing to stick around, whether he did something or he didn’t. I believe that he didn’t. I know it wasn’t a real person. I know all of those things. It doesn’t matter.”

Kramer maintained that the real “trauma” for her is in the consistency that she keeps “finding things out,” and drove home the point that she’s just tired of it at this point.

JANA KRAMER DESCRIBES FINDING OUT ABOUT HUSBAND’S CHEATING RIGHT BEFORE GOING ON STAGE

“I need him to understand how deep that wound is for me when I discover something, whether he did something or not,” she said. “That is just like – it’s painful. And I just can’t physically hold that anymore.”

Caussin revealed that he regretted going public with the incident, adding that he was hurt to learn of people questioning his sex addiction in social media comments made to Kramer. Caussin said he rarely sees them because he isn’t on social media.

“Right now, I mean, all I can do is be as empathetic as I can with you and understanding and do whatever I need to do [to] create safety around things,” Caussin told his wife.

However, Kramer still voiced her concern that she and Caussin live in a revolving cycle of lies and despair surrounding Caussin’s pattern of behavior.

“I think, again, what’s scary is the what happens the next time for me,” she said, “because I just know I can’t – and, again, no matter what it is. And I think that’s hard, but that’s my truth with it, you know?”
