Met Gala returning with 2021 show after canceling last year due to the coronavirus pandemic

The Met Gala is coming back. Actually, twice.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Monday that the annual high-wattage celebration of both fashion and celebrity — canceled last year because of the pandemic — will return in person, first in September, then again in 2022 in its usual slot of the first Monday in May.

The galas, a “more intimate” version Sept. 13 of this year and a larger one on May 2, 2022, will launch a two-part exhibition, a survey of American fashion to be on view for almost a year.

“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” opening Sept. 18, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the museum’s Costume Institute and “explore a modern vocabulary of American fashion,” the museum said. Part two, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” will open in the museum’s popular American Wing period rooms on May 5, 2022, and will explore American fashion, with collaborations with film directors, by “presenting narratives that relate to the complex and layered histories of those spaces.” Both parts will close on Sept. 5, 2022.

Filmmaker Melina Matsoukas (“Queen & Slim”) has been commissioned to create an open-ended film to project in the galleries, with content changing during the course of the exhibition.

There was no immediate word on who the celebrity hosts, or chairs, would be for the galas, traditionally a heady mix of luminaries from fashion, music, film, TV, sports and other arenas. The first gala in September will be smaller, and held in accordance with government coronavirus guidelines. The second next May is intended to be larger, in line with previous galas which typically hold about 550 guests.

The gala is a major fundraiser, providing the Costume Institute with its primary source of funding. In 2020, the gala was canceled but fans were invited to engage in a social media challenge to recreate favorite red-carpet looks.

MET GALA 2020 HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY CANCELED, MUSEUM SAYS

“Fashion is both a harbinger of cultural shifts and a record of the forces, beliefs, and events that shape our lives,” said Max Hollein, director of the Met, in a statement. “This two-part exhibition will consider how fashion reflects evolving notions of identity in America and will explore a multitude of perspectives through presentations that speak to some of the complexities of history with powerful immediacy.”

As always, the exhibits will be the work of star curator Andrew Bolton. “Over the past year, because of the pandemic, the connections to our homes have become more emotional, as have those to our clothes,” he said in his own statement. “For American fashion, this has meant an increased emphasis on sentiment over practicality.”

He said that in accordance with this shift, Part One of the exhibition will establish “a modern vocabulary of American fashion based on the expressive qualities of clothing as well as deeper associations with issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion.”

As for Part Two, it will “further investigate the evolving language of American fashion through a series of collaborations with American film directors who will visualize the unfinished stories inherent in The Met’s period rooms.”

In addition to Matsoukas, other confirmed collaborators from the film world include cinematographer Bradford Young, whose projects have included “Selma” and “When They See Us;” production designers Nathan Crowley and Shane Valentino; and Franklin Leonard, film executive and founder of The Black List, a listing of top unproduced screenplays.

Prince Philip’s final hours were ‘peaceful’ and ‘gentle’ Sophie, Countess of Wessex says

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, shed some new light on Prince Philip’s final hours following his death at age 99.

The wife of Prince Edward spoke outside the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor on Sunday, where she and other members of the royal family attended a service on Sunday to mourn the loss of the Duke of Edinburgh.

The royal, 56, painted a calm and “peaceful” image of Philip’s final hours, telling Sky News that, although shocking, the passing of the Queen’s husband was still a dignified moment.

“It was right for him and, you know, it was so gentle. It was like someone took him by the hand, and then he went. Very, very peaceful and that’s all you want for somebody, isn’t it?” she said.

The Countess of Wessex continued: “So I think it is so much easier for the person that goes than the people who are left behind. We are all sitting here looking at each other going ‘this is awful.’ But equally, look at all the tributes. It’s just amazing.”

PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH AND QUEEN ELIZABETH II’S HUSBAND, DEAD AT 99

She joins the many royals who have spoken out to pay tribute to the late Duke of Edinburgh. Most recently, his grandson Prince William spoke out to honor him ahead of his funeral on April 17.

“My grandfather’s century of life was defined by service – to his country and Commonwealth, to his wife and Queen, and to our family,” his statement began.

William, 38, continued: “I feel lucky to have not just had his example to guide me, but his enduring presence well into my own adult life – both through good times and the hardest days. I will always be grateful that my wife had so many years to get to know my grandfather and for the kindness he showed her.

“I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour!”

“My grandfather was an extraordinary man and part of an extraordinary generation, William shared. “Catherine and I will continue to do what he would have wanted and will support The Queen in the years ahead. I will miss my Grandpa, but I know he would want us to get on with the job.”

‘Sister Wives’ star Robyn Brown tells husband Kody she’s sometimes ‘baby hungry’: ‘We need to decide this now’

Kody Brown hasn’t ruled out the possibility of expanding his family of four wives and a combined 18 children.

On Sunday night’s episode of “Sister Wives,” the 52-year-old spoke to one of his plural wives about the idea of having more children.

“You know how like, a couple years ago when we went back to Vegas for, a little like, trip and I said, ‘Are we done having kids?’ We both kind of went, ‘Ehh. I think no, I think we’re done,” Robyn Brown told her husband, as quoted by People magazine on Monday.

“And you keep making comments and jokes and then it’s, ‘I don’t know if I’m done,’” she continued. “I brought you out here to say, ‘What is going on?’”

Robyn told Brown that she wanted to be on the same page as him due to her “biological clock.”

“I’m 41 years old,” she said in a confessional. “We need to decide this and now. Like, there’s a biological clock ticking. I’m not getting younger. We can’t sit here and stall out on this if this is what we’re going to do. I have days when I’m baby hungry and I really want another baby.”

According to the outlet, Robyn said she “100 percent” wanted “to have Kody’s commitment because he is older, he’s got wives that are like, completely done.”

“And if we’re going to have a baby, we’re both going to be committed and you’re going to be holding a baby,” she added.

Brown told his fourth wife that he was “caught in a conundrum, completely.”

“You know, this is what I’ve always done, this is what I’ve always been,” he said. “I’ve always been fathering and having special experiences with little people ‘cause they’re just sweet.”

“I’m pretty sure that I’ve been having kids for 26 years,” he later told cameras. “There’s this real joy about having a little one.”

While raising his youngest daughter, Ariella, 4, has been “just a wonderful experience,” Brown said he wasn’t sure if he was ready for more.

“But at the same time, I’m caught in this conflict because Ari’s been weened for a year and she’s still keeping us up at night,” he explained.

“It’s mental exhaustion,” he told cameras. “You’re arguing with a 4-year-old who has the words of a 10-year-old and the logic of an idiot.”

Still, Robyn said she didn’t feel “done.”

‘SISTER WIVES’ STAR MERI BROWN SHE HASN’T GIVEN UP ON HER PLURAL MARRIAGE: ‘I’M JUST GOING TO KEEP AT IT’

“Women talk about that feeling of like, ‘Oh I’m done,’” she said. “I’ve never really got that. You know when you’re young and you’re just thinking about having children and people will say, ‘How many kids are you going to have?’ I would always say, ‘Just as many as I’m supposed to have. As many as I’ve made promises to.’”

“… It’s a big deal to me,” said Robyn as she became emotional. “To make sure all my babies are here with me. That’s all. In my head, I made promises to a certain amount of children to be their mother. You know, in the pre-life and I want to fulfill all those promises.”

According to the outlet, Brown told his wife that he didn’t want their relationship to be solely based on children.

“I want to have a life with you that’s not just about all our kids,” he said.

However, Brown told cameras he felt he was “walking on eggshells here in a way because I don’t want to discourage Robyn from us having a baby if she feels a premonition that we should.”

Brown revealed he was open to the idea of adoption.

“Adoption was never an option because we were having our own children,” he said. “But now that we’re winding up here, the idea of adoption is something that would be more appealing to me.”

For Robyn, the decision wasn’t final.

“If I don’t know that I’m done, maybe we need to make sure,” she said. “I don’t know what else to do with it. Because I don’t have a strong answer either way.”

Brown and first wife Meri Brown tied the knot in 1990. Three years later, the couple welcomed sister wife Janelle into their plural marriage, followed by Christine in 1994. Robyn joined the family as a fourth wife in 2010.

Brown was only legally married to Meri. However, Meri agreed to divorce Brown so he could tie the knot with Robyn in 2014. That legal change would allow Robyn’s three children from a previous marriage to access the same benefits as the rest of Brown’s children.

Brown said he considers himself to be “spiritually” married to his four wives.

“Sister Wives,” a reality TV series on TLC, aims to show how Brown and his family navigate life in a world that seems to shun their lifestyle. The series has been airing since 2010.

Being married to more than one person, or bigamy is illegal across the United States. The law in Mormon-heavy Utah is considered stricter because of a unique provision that bars married people from living with a second “spiritual spouse.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints abandoned polygamy in 1890 and strictly prohibits it today. The Browns consider themselves fundamentalist Mormons.

Back in 2019, Brown told Fox News that the family has agreed on not considering a fifth wife anytime soon.

“We really took the fifth wife thing off the table a long time ago,” said Brown. “And because we don’t want to snub the concept, we’ve always sort of been very casually dismissing it, and I think that’s one reason the question keeps coming up. But it’s technically been off the table as long as we’ve done the show.”

“Sister Wives” airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Will Smith, Antoine Fuqua movie ‘Emancipation’ pulls out of filming in Georgia due to voter laws

Will Smith and director Antoine Fuqua are pulling their Apple-produced thriller “Emancipation” from Georgia due to the state’s recently passed voting laws.

The actor and director released a statement to Fox News on Monday announcing the change, noting that they can’t “in good conscience” provide money to Georgia that filming there would bring in as they feel the new laws amount to Reconstruction-era voter suppression.

“At this moment in time, the Nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice. We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access,” the statement reads. “The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting. Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.”

TYLER PERRY’S LATEST DONATION AIMS TO ‘BRIDGE UNITY’ BETWEEN ATLANTA POLICE AND RESIDENTS

The new law adds early voting access for most counties, adding an additional mandatory Saturday and codifying Sunday hours as optional, according to a report from Georgia Public Broadcasting. It also standardizes early voting hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or as long as 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; makes it mandatory to present a state-issued ID when requesting an absentee ballot; limits the number of drop boxes in the state, requiring them to be placed at early voting locations and only available while the precinct is open; and prohibits handing out food and water within 150 feet of the polling place or 25 feet of any voter in line, although poll workers are exempted.

TYLER PERRY DETAILS STRICT GUIDELINES FOR CAST AND CREW RETURNING TO WORK AT HIS ATLANTA STUDIO

Many critics of the law have said that it unfairly targets minority communities in the state, which flipped blue in the 2020 General Election.

Deadline reports that the move will cost the production somewhere in the $15 million range given that it’s new filming location, which the outlet reports will likely be Louisiana, doesn’t carry the same tax rebates that have made Georgia such a lucrative destination for people like Tyler Perry, who built his own studio in Atlanta.

However, unlike Smith, Perry previously cautioned the entertainment industry from pulling out of the state over the voting laws.

“Emancipation” is based on a script from William N. Collage that will star Smith as Peter, a fugitive from slavery who travels north, avoiding hunters and more, after escaping a Louisiana plantation. The movie is based on the real-life character “Whipped Peter,” an enslaved person who emancipated himself from the South and joined the Union Army. Photos taken of his back in 1863 showed extensive scarring he had from being whipped by his slave master that inspired many to speak out against slavery and fight to end it.

The film was originally scheduled to begin filming on June 21, 2021. However, that date may be subject to change given the location change.

Charlyne Yi tried to quit ‘Disaster Artist’ over James Franco allegations, accuses Seth Rogen of enabling him

Actress Charlyne Yi says she tried to quit the 2017 movie “The Disaster Artist” amid James Franco misconduct allegations.

The actress took to Instagram over the weekend to reveal that she tried to quit the film after allegations of sexually predatory behavior from Franco made her uncomfortable working with him. The former “Freaks and Geeks” actor was previously caught courting an underage girl and was accused of sexual misconduct with women at his former acting school, which he denied.

“When I tried to break legal contract & quit Disaster Artist because James Franco is a sexual predator, they tried to bribe me with a bigger acting role,” Yi wrote in her post. “I cried and told them that that was the exact opposite of what I wanted, that I didn’t feel safe working with a f—ing sexual predator. They minimized & said Franco being a predator was so last yr and that he changed… when I literally heard of him abusing new women that week.”

She continued: “Predators will perform empathy, gaslight, & say they will do better—all in order to protect themselves and continue to harm others. Enablers are just as toxic and are abusers too. Disgusted by white men choosing power over protecting children and women from predators.”

The actress went on to call out frequent Franco collaborator Seth Rogen for “enabling” him throughout the years.

“White men saying it’s not their responsibility when holding Franco accountable, or when holding Seth Rogen and enablers accountable. Then whose responsibility is it? The women and children who have PTSD from Franco? Or the future targets of abuse?”

She further called out Rogen for appearing in a “Saturday Night Live” sketch with Franco in 2017 when the latter hosted the popular sketch show, after he apologized for messaging an underage girl. She also noted that she told her story about “The Disaster Artist” in light of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

JAMES FRANCO ACCUSED OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT BY 5 WOMEN, GRILLED BY SETH MEYERS

Franco has been accused of misconduct a few times in the past. In 2014, text conversations in which he tried to get a 17-year-old girl to meet him at a hotel in New York City surfaced. Franco acknowledged the issue at the time and apologized during an appearance on “Live! With Kelly and Michael,” according to Entertainment Weekly. However, in 2018, the Los Angeles Times published an extensive expose about the actor in which five women from his now defunct acting school, Studio 4, accused him of using it to facilitate sexual misconduct. Two of the women filed lawsuits that were settled this year.

Representatives for Rogen had no comment when reached by Fox News. Representatives for Franco did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Days prior to her post in which she revealed she tried to quit “The Disaster Artist,” she called out Rogen for enabling his friend in a different Instagram Post.

Yi said a mutual friend of theirs asked her to participate in an awareness event by sharing her abuse story. She noted that the person wasn’t holding Rogen accountable for enabling Franco and claims that the friend did not respond to her after that.

Jennifer Lopez shares photos without her $1M engagement ring on ‘Shotgun Wedding’ set

Jennifer Lopez spent her Saturday on the set of her upcoming romantic comedy “Shotgun Wedding,” but her engagement ring was noticeably absent.

The 51-year-old actress shared two social media posts that highlighted what her “work on the weekend” looks like.

JENNIFER LOPEZ AND ALEX RODRIGUEZ ARE ‘FAR FROM PLANNING A WEDDING AGAIN’ BUT REMAIN ENGAGED: SOURCES

In the first post, Lopez uploaded three photos that show her sitting at the bottom of a staircase. She’s wearing beige joggers, a cropped white tank top and sneakers and mixed-metal bracelets, necklaces and two massive stones on her right ring finger.

While beautiful, the impressive dual stones are different from the 15-carat emerald-cut diamond ring her fiancé Alex Rodriguez gave her in March 2019.

Back when the Lopez and Rodriguez first announced their engagement, jewelry and style expert Lauren McCawley told E! News she estimated the ring was worth around $1 million.

JENNIFER LOPEZ ‘TOLD’ ALEX RODRIGUEZ TO ‘FIX’ THE QUESTIONS SURROUNDING THEIR RELATIONSHIP: SOURCE

The differences between the two pieces were even more apparent in JLo’s second post, where she threw up a peace sign at the camera with her right hand.

Fans and media outlets have been keeping tabs on Lopez’s ring finger after reports surfaced about her and Rodriguez were going through relationship troubles in March.

Since then, the actress and singer has been spotted out in public multiple times without her pre-nuptial rock.

Page Six noted Lopez did not wear her engagement ring during her InStyle cover shoot on Monday. However, she did wear an assortment of rings on both ring fingers, which varied with each outfit she donned.

Prince Philip once said he didn’t want to turn 100: ‘Can’t imagine anything worse’

While some may wish to become a centenarian, reaching that milestone birthday was not what Prince Philip wanted.

At least that’s what the British royal reportedly told The Telegraph’s reporter Gyles Brandreth in an interview from 2000.

Brandreth recalled the conversation he had with Philip, who was 79 at the time, in an article he wrote in 2019.

According to the journalist and TV presenter, Philip had “no desire whatsoever” to reach his 100th birthday.

“I can’t imagine anything worse,” Brandreth claims the late prince told him at the start of the millennium (via The Telegraph). “’Bits of me are falling off already.’”

Kid Cudi’s ‘SNL’ performances referenced Chris Farley, Kurt Cobain and social media loved it

Kid Cudi took the stage at “Saturday Night Live” for the first time, and he did so with two distinct outfits that got social media users talking.

For his first set, the 37-year-old rapper wore a green sweater, Chris Farley t-shirt and ripped jeans while he performed his song “Tequila Shots.”

Followers of Cudi commended his shirt choice and viewed it as a kind homage to Farley, who died in 1997 at the age of 33.

Farley was a cast member of the late-night comedy show between 1990 and 1995, and is still considered an iconic figure by some “SNL” fans. The last Farley tribute to hit the Studio 8H stage was in 2019 with Adam Sandler singing an original song about his long lost friend.

Meanwhile, other viewers interpreted Cudi’s green mohair sweater as an homage to the late Kurt Cobain, who wore similar outerwear during Nirvana’s 1993 MTV Unplugged performance in New York anddied at the age of 27 nearly five months after the concert was recorded.

“We love to see @KidCudi using his platform to pay tribute to artists who have lost their lives to depression and addiction, and give visible, joyful hope to people who continue to struggle with mental illness,” Philip tweeted out Sunday morning.

Prince Philip’s son, Prince Andrew, speaks out about his death, says Queen Elizabeth II left with ‘huge void’

Queen Elizabeth II has been left with a “huge void” in her life in the wake of the death of her husband, Prince Philip, according to their son, Prince Andrew.

Andrew, the third of the couple’s four children, spoke as well-wishers arrived to leave floral tributes outside the gates of the royal residence in memory of the monarch’s late husband. The royal family member attended church at the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor along with other members of the family, two days after the 99-year-old Philip died at Windsor Castle.

Andrew said his mother “described it as having left a huge void in her life.”

“We’ve lost, almost, the grandfather of the nation,” he said. “And I feel very sorry and supportive of my mother, who’s feeling it probably more than everybody else.”

Edward, 57, added that the “extraordinary” tributes meant a lot to the royal family.

“It just goes to show, he might have been our father, grandfather, father-in-law, but he meant so much to so many other people,” he said.

Both palace and government officials urged people not to come in person to pay their respects because of coronavirus restrictions on social gatherings. However, hundreds of people brought notes, cards and flowers to the gates of Windsor Castle, located 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of London, on Sunday while others laid tributes outside Buckingham Palace in the British capital.

“I think that there are some things that are just important and need to be done. Ninety-nine years of life and more than 70 years of service deserves some recognition,” he said.

Philip’s funeral is set to take place April 17 at Windsor Castle. Only 30 people will be able to attend under the current coronavirus restrictions in England, but the slimmed-down service is scheduled to be broadcast live on television.

Philip’s grandson Prince Harry, who stepped away from royal duties last year and now lives in California, will attend the service along with other members of the royal family, palace officials have said. His wife, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, is pregnant and has been advised by her doctor not to make the journey.

Andrew, 61, who has largely kept out of the public eye since 2019 amid controversy over his friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, also praised the “absolutely amazing tributes.”
