Alabama A&M linebacker dies at UAB hospital following Magic City Classic injury
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – An Alabama A&M linebacker passed away Wednesday evening after suffering an injury at the Magic City Classic back in October.
Jefferson County Coroner Matt Angelo confirmed Medrick Burnett Jr. died at UAB Hospital Wednesday evening at 5:43 p.m.
A redshirt freshman at Alabama A&M, Burnett Jr. was injured in a head-on collision during the Magic City Classic. He was later carted off the field.
The 20-year-old played in seven games this season for the Bulldogs. He transferred to Alabama A&M from Grambling State during the off-season.
Earlier Wednesday, Alabama A&M released a statement confirming Burnett Jr.‘s death, but it was retracted later that day. After speaking with Burnett Jr.‘s family it was confirmed that he remained in the hospital on life support.
