4 arrested for shoplifting from Madison business; leading officers on chase
MADISON, Miss. (WLBT) – Four people are in custody after shoplifting from a Madison business and then leading officers on a chase.
A press release says the incident happened just before 6 p.m. Friday.
The Madison Police Department received a call from Dicks Sporting Goods regarding two males and two females shoplifting.
According to MPD, while officers were en route, they were notified that a store clerk was assaulted in a short confrontation with the suspects.
The press release says the suspects then left the store in a white Dodge Charger with an Indiana tag.
A Madison officer found the vehicle on Cotton Hill and initiated a traffic stop.
That’s when the vehicle fled from the officer, making a right onto Colony Park and then heading north on I-55.
MPD says that as the suspect vehicle passed under the mile marker 108 exit, two civilian vehicles collided in the right lane, which caused the front civilian vehicle to enter the left lane and side-swipe a patrol vehicle on the passenger side.
One officer and the drivers of the civilian vehicles were taken to hospitals for minor injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.
The suspect vehicle entered the right shoulder of the road, where it remained at slow speeds as it came to a rest near mile marker 109 on the right northbound shoulder.
Authorities identified the females as Damonia Johnson and Traieonna Earl. They stayed inside the vehicle and were taken into custody without incident.
However, the two male suspects attempted to run away. One of them was caught after a short distance and later identified as Garland Garner.
The driver, Thomas Carr, was apprehended moments later with the help of a drone with thermal capabilities.
Charges:
Thomas Carr, 21,- felony fleeing, felony shoplifting, felony conspiracy to commit a crime, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, expired driver’s license, and no insurance
Garland Garner, 22,- felony conspiracy to commit a crime, felony shoplifting, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and simple assault
Damonia Johnson, 18, and Traieonna Earl, 19,- felony conspiracy to commit a crime and felony shoplifting
MPD says the four suspects are from Flint, Michigan.
